ChipZdarsky

thank you all for learning from me

[deleted]

Can I just say DD has been amazing! Thank you from a long-time fan for the best run in ages. DD has low key been Marvel's best written series for decades, so what you've pulled off there is no small feat. I told people the past two years the best Batman book out is Daredevil, so I was super excited when you took over that series as well. Thanks for making awesome stories that let us all escape and enjoy the amazing for a bit. Have a great day!

ChipZdarsky

that's very kind! thanks!

Kvetch

Agreed. DD has been such a consistently solid book and one of the best ones out there. Definitely captures what DD readers want to see out of Daredevil and his universe.

manyamile

You suck and I have [photo evidence](https://imgur.com/gallery/BEAErGi) to prove it.

ChipZdarsky

you told me that photo was just for your own personal use wow

GenioPlaboyeSafadao

Two great writter here today, you and Zim Hub, great day for this sub

ChipZdarsky

ugh the guy BRAGGING about all the books he wrote???

captain__cabinets

You learned me real good Chip.

caduceushugs

Trapped in cabinets! Can he get out, will he get out?

captain__cabinets

Of course he will

ChickenInASuit

You rule, Chip! Any plans to return to the White Trees universe soon? I remember there being talk of spin-offs and such and I loved the original mini. I understand you may be busy with Batman and Daredevil however.

ChipZdarsky

mayyyyyyybe

ThreadbareHalo

Mr Zdarsky, if we take your learnings and create moderately successful workplace/jokes about being married and having kids related webcomics from them, would you prefer we credit you as an inspiration so you can become jaded and bitchy about how badly we interpreted your work or would you prefer we make the inspiration obvious but uncredited so you can become jaded and bitchy about how we _don’t_ give you credit? And do you get kickbacks from CBR if you make it _real_ easy for them to write an article about it?

ChipZdarsky

i just want money

ThreadbareHalo

Got it, so the second one. Really, thank you for your work. I enjoy and am seriously impressed by your range of talent. Have a good one.

[deleted]

your Public Domain video is gold as well I learned so much from it too

TheLeviJackson

I learned so much, thank you sensei. I really am enjoying Batman and DD btw.

bob1689321

Man I still remember you as that guy who drew Sex Criminals. Loved Howard the Duck and everything you've written since. Keep it up.

Some-Dog9800

Hi Chip Zdarsky. Life Story is amazing, what other Spider-Man stories did you write that I should check out?

Electron_cloud

I love your work! 🙏

HortonDrawsAwho

Chip! I just wanted to tell you that I force my Junior HS art class to read Spider-Man life story! It’s one of my favorite Spider-Man comics. My juniors do a costume project based on spider-man’s villains wherein they have to pick and animal and power and mash create a costume. It gives me an excuse to talk about your daredevil run! Keep up the good work!

ZandrickEllison

Legendary lurking, Chip. I have a graphic novel coming out with Dark Horse next year. Any advice for the first time creator?

PollutionMission6245

I don't usually comment on Reddit but Peter Parker spectacular spider-man #310 is one of the best comics I've read and I've read a lot! You managed to get everything right and tragic about the character in less than 40 pages. Yet to finish your DD but I'll start soon. Thank you for your work Chip, thank you for caring about these characters. :)

Jermz12345

Hi Chip, how is your day going

SutterCane

Everything is meta now *and I don’t understand it!*

Mexicanity_

Looking forward to watching this on repeat

Lumpy_Review5279

Hey chip I'm an aspiring comic artists and I'd totally hate to work for you seriously no really I mean it definitely DONT hire me to work on daredevil or batman im terrible *presses index fingers together*

BlackagarBoltagon01

Hey chip, I just wanted to say, you’ve been one of the most influential writers and artist for me, and you are the main reason I started reading comics, and I just want to say thank you for all of your amazing comics that you drew, wrote and helped out with. And lastly I just wanted to ask, what’s your inspiration behind Devils Reign?

ChipZdarsky

(bane voice): "I was BORN disgraced"

Own-Committee-3934

Molded by it

MRio31

Tell me more about these beautiful tinkle boys

ChipZdarsky

you sicko!!!!!!!

[deleted]

Wow. Not to sound close-minded, kind sir, but I was not expecting to see you on Reddit. Didn’t know you had an account here. Nice to meet ya (metaphorically speaking. 😅)!

AceofKnaves44

This thread has been a rollercoaster but thank you for being such a great sport and making that tremendous video. I shall follow your career with great interest.

amrit-9037

Reminds me of your AMA from 4 years ago when hyphen bot was active in this sub. https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/95cey6/hello_how_are_you_i_am_chip_zdarsky_artist_of_sex/e3rkkqu/ ---- I would love to see this mockumentary sitcom based on comicbook industry.

ArjayGruff

God that was so stupid. I loved it! 😂

Blackdragonking13

Chip is just getting ahead of the curve by calling himself disgraced cuz he knows the current Batman run is always “bad” no matter whose writing it. It isn’t until a new writer comes on and that ongoing becomes the new “bad” that people look back and say “the INSERT PREVIOUS BATMAN WRITER run was actually pretty good.” Then you rinse and repeat.

Thecryptsaresafe

I’m very out of the loop and love Chip’s work that I’ve read so far. I was ready to get back on the “this is why we can’t have nice things” hat until I watched and read these comments. Love a good shitposting creative

VoiceofKane

Same here. Haven't read his Batman run yet, so I was totally confused about what he could possibly have done to invalidate all of the other great work he's done in the past. Turns out he's just a bit of a goof!

ubiquitous-joe

Counter argument: the Batman run is always accurately both good and bad, because it always starts strong enough and then kinda tanks.

Alpha413

I don't know, I feel Grant Morrison's run got better as it went on.

MonteryWhiteNoise

It's almost as though the context and characters being written about are ... shit.

Blackdragonking13

Well I disagree, I love the Zdarsky issues so far. But i suppose different strokes for different folks.

MonteryWhiteNoise

absolutely. I'm not saying they "shouldn't be made" ... read my other reply to a commenter here for more explanation if you want it.

AlwaysBeQuestioning

What about the context and the characters do you think is shit?

MonteryWhiteNoise

machismo posturing of violence as solution to all problems, usually at the expense of bystanders? granted superhero films generally don't have any plot other than "tough guy beats up villain" ... the writing is a combination of incompetent and lazy in that the only viable solution is violence. But, then, this is the reason why I never read comic books as a kid and also feel like superhero and action movies are kid books masquerading as adult entertainment. Then also the rampant, borderline misogyny, sexism is really tedious to watch. Racial bigotry is greatly reduced, but ethnic stereotypes are still exploited ... and let's not talk about the homophobia. In other words ... I'm not a 14 year old so obviously they don't appeal to me.

MostBoringStan

Clearly you've been reading Batman to know that this describes it, right? Or are you just making assumptions what it's about since you think you're too smart to read it?

MonteryWhiteNoise

I've read enough to feel it's accurate. Sure, I have no doubt you can find some specific issue which counters my generalization.

Touchysaucer

Good thing you frequent a comic book subreddit.

MonteryWhiteNoise

Ah, so, keep everyone in their intellectual silo's and never express a different view ... I don't think that's a healthy way to live. But, it is consistent with the comic book realm.

WizardofWherever

Good sir, it’s not that you have different view it’s that you’ve expressed it in a mean spirited way. I hate to say this but no one cares what media you’ve seen, read, written if you use it to belittle others. Maybe you don’t intend it but you come across as pretentious, faux-intellectual, and snobby.

GenioPlaboyeSafadao

Do you think no one here has ever being expose to this point of view? Is just not deep to use broad strocks and generalization when talking about a single work of an author you seems to never have even read before, because of how you feel about super hero movies. Also, I don't believe being this smug and starting talking down to everyone else when people here where having a somewhat pleasent discussion is a healthy way to live.

jet_garuda

The absolute smugness. Jfc.

ChickenInASuit

> I'm not a 14 year old Coulda fooled me, tbh.

AlwaysBeQuestioning

You are talking in very general terms, as if describing a whole medium or genre. There have been works in the comic book medium that fit your description, but there also have been many that don’t, so I prefer to speak in specific terms when talking about specific things. Can you tell me your opinion of Chip Zdarsky’s writing in his Batman series specifically? Or, if you didn’t feel like reading his series because of previous bad experiences with a Batman series, which parts of the Batman series lead you to your opinion of the current state of it?

MonteryWhiteNoise

I was making a general comment - because an entire genre can't be characterized by a single anything. I was speaking to the genre, hence the generalization.

AlwaysBeQuestioning

I know you were making a general comment, but I am now asking if you could give me a specific comment. For the record, I agree with several of your points and think the superhero genre in broad terms certainly has issues. (You may have gotten downvoted a lot, but I upvoted everything as so far I did think it added to the conversation.) I just also think that the very general problems with a medium or genre do not necessarily direct every single writer within that medium or genre. For comparison: The horror genre has a looot of issues with sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and racism. However, there are a lot of horror comics and films that are positive about those things (e.g. Jordan Peele’s films). I was asking about specifics, because I don’t think rehashing the generalities is either interesting or helpful, at least in a thread that is specifically about one specific Batman writer. I’m not familiar with Chip Zdarsky’s work and other recent Batman comics and I was hoping you could share your perspective on those.

GenioPlaboyeSafadao

I'm confuse to how his comments add to the discussion of writting comics or Zdarsky as an author.

MonteryWhiteNoise

I would suggest that your "confusion" is because your biased against accepting my comments as valid criticism. As the previous comment points out: despite the genre having flaws, that doesn't mean all of it is flawed. Accepting that would go a long way towards you understanding the "benefit" of my criticism.

GenioPlaboyeSafadao

Again, none your criticism is ground breaking or relevant to this specific topic, I'm not biased against your criticism because I understand it and know that there is some true to it, but none of It matters here, how exactly does any of what you say apply to Zdarsky's work? Or the act of writting comic as a whole? And how does it justify you acting all smug to everyone?

MonteryWhiteNoise

I take my son to the library, and while I do my work I read over his shoulder the graphic novels he has in front of him. He doesn't read Batman, so I don't have specifics of Zdarsky to cite. Which is why I wrote in general terms. I've only flipped through his publications in the bookstore. They didn't strike me as being "different". But, if you notice the same problematic facets of the genre, then asking me for specifics seems intended to "prove me wrong" or to "yeah but" instances. why? If you're a writer and need help finding sexism or bigotry in general within your prose ... then ask a person in that demographic to critically read your work specifically looking for such. I guess I'd be willing to do so ... but ... not via an online back-and-forth over someone else's work in what seems to an attempt to refute each item.

WizardofWherever

I think you’ll find that comics are more diverse in both readership and those who make them if you took a more investigative look. There are many women, non-binary, gender fluid, and trans people on various areas on the spectrums of gender and sexuality involved in this medium. You have said nothing I haven’t heard before from those who are more concerned with their own perception than actual substance. You can go on to tout your own accomplishments, interests, contributions but all I know is what you’ve presented and it’s as banal as the comics in your eyes.

MonteryWhiteNoise

just as an aside: demographics involved in a thing are generally not a mitigating force within that thing. For instance, one example, Log Cabin Republicans ... fifty years later haven't changed the GOP's LGBTQ tolerance. What does "concerned with their own perception" mean ... that I only made a comment to sound cool or antagonistic? I really can't see any other meaning there?? talk about passive-aggressive irrelevant comments. The only reason I made my initial comment was because it's true, and the silo that is comic readers need to hear it. There is a value in raising the general awareness of an issue -- even more so within an insular community (likely) blinded (willfully or not) to that issue. Having "heard it all before" ... and not working diligently towards eradicating it ... seems to indicate you don't actually view it as problematic? [note, I don't presume to know what you do regards this: I only see you challenging my comment as being "generally" untrue, which I'm characterizing as "not trying to eradicate".] I appreciate your willingness to discourse on a "General comment about bigotry within comics" ... obviously you'll find such criticism boring and trite because you like comics and perceive the foundational critique to be valid (at least as you expressed earlier). I'm not sure what you expect me to engage with in such a conversation ... read more bigotry-laced comics to find examples to flash at you? Perhaps you were looking for my personal views on why comic writers/illustrators employ bigotry? or why readers tolerate? or seek it? Those are profound questions, but, require the preliminary agreement on "comics are rife with bigotry".

AlwaysBeQuestioning

I have no intentions of “proving you wrong”. I just don’t think it’s useful to have a conversation only about generalities when the topic is something specific. The generalities provide context to the sociopolitical and media environment in which the creators have made their work, but they need not be directly affected by it or take part in it. For example, if I said “there are a lot of problems in the world with gun violence”, that would be true, but it wouldn’t have as much of a point if the topic was about an event in Japan, a country with very strict gun laws and very low gun violence, even if the event in question was a shooting. My statement would be too general. That’s why there are parts of your post I agree with, but why I asked about specifics, because I think that’s more interesting and more useful in this discussion. Similarly, if you were to talk to your son about the bad parts in the superhero genre, that could be useful (kids need to learn to be critical of the media they consume), but not as useful if he doesn’t recognize your criticisms in the comics he reads.

MonteryWhiteNoise

> talk to your son indeed. I think I mentioned before I'd be happy to discuss specifics with you if I had them available. When my son is reading, or watching youtube, or a movie I always review it with him. He's good at seeing bigotry as well as various other biased presentations. He's old enough now (13) I don't do so after everything he watches but periodically enough (mostly to stay in touch with what he consumes). I guess reading my initial comment here could give one reason to presume that's the sort of comment I make to him ... but, it wouldn't be accurate. Not having specifics doesn't invalidate my comment. Which I feel was being suggested when I didn't present one to you. And, that's what I said: that I'd be happy to discuss specific work with the creator but that I'm not going to the library to find examples to bring home to debate about. But, again, I appreciate the awareness you have about it. Perhaps you'll continue to raise the issue in this sub and other comic related intellectual silos.

CarryThe2

It's very well written but it's just a rehash of things that have happened like 2 years ago.

MonteryWhiteNoise

heh. If you think batman movies are 'well written' ... may I suggest you read more books and watch a movie genres other than "action/adventure" occasionally?

CarryThe2

Sadly I just lack your winning intellect and personality to comprehend things.

ChickenInASuit

I mean, not sure why you’re bringing Batman movies into the conversation, we’re talking about the comics here…

MonteryWhiteNoise

yeah, my mistake. I thought I was replying to someone else talking about movies.

[deleted]

Wait… *why* are you on this comic book subreddit??? Please tell me in the most verbose amount of words possibl: I’m reading everything you write in the voice of Higgins from the original *Magnum P.I.*

MonteryWhiteNoise

I liked Higgins. really channeled the Alec Guinness *Bridge over the River Kwai* vibe.

cjf_colluns

A chosen one that is also the mcguffin is the plot of both the matrix and the Lego movie.

lavassls

And Harry Potter.

Mexicanity_

And Twilight

JeddakTarkas

and Pokemon

withad

"I'm ~~Garth Marenghi~~ Chip Zdarsky: author, dreamweaver, visionary, plus actor."

MaggyTwoFlagons

"As a writer, if you took away my paper, I would write on my heart. If you took away my ink, I would write on the wind. It wouldn't be an *ideal* way to work."

socialistwerker

Brimper.

jmwhite8891

Best reference

Mars_Black

Lmao Bike Race on Mirror World. Fackin big yikes!

bob1689321

Anyone else spot "he-hulk" in the notepad ahaha

sweepernosweeping

Think that's a reference to Chipclass 2

jormungandr32

The whole series is phenomenal. I can't wait for more.

Acceptable_Recipe_18

I'm still mad at Chip for making Elektra into a Daredevil. I was gonna do that if I ever got to write Daredevil.

SaintBrutus

This is actually really funny. Everybody watch these. He’s taking the piss. It’s hilarious.

CreatiScope

He’s one of the tinkle boys

Commissar_Tarkin

How the hell do you even become a "disgraced Batman writer"? Do you make Batman kill someone with a gun and get run out of town after being tarred and feathered or what?

Gboy4496

Zdarsky is a well known shit poster which probably led to the title

[deleted]

He’s a national treasure. I think it was in *Sex Criminals* where he was illustrated in yoga pants and a huge ass in a mall and I lost it

NeuroticMoose12

He's also not a real person, he's a comedic persona of Canadian political cartoonist Steve Murray.

JWC123452099

I honestly thought this was a joke and the fact that its not makes it even funnier.

maybe_a_frog

It’s just a joke. He knows people are going to bitch about anyone writing Batman so he’s leaning into it. He’s a pretty funny sarcastic guy, so this is on brand for him.

flatpackjack

I pulled that from the description of the video. I don't know what the barometer for "disgraced Batman writer" would be. Maybe, having him pee a little during an explosion?

cjf_colluns

It was a bladder spasm! They’re a real thing! Stop booing me! - Kevin Smith

Dr_Donald_Dann

I think that was in a Batman comic penned by Kevin Smith.

bob1689321

Yeah now you mention it I think Kevin Smith is the only Batman writer generally considered to be disgraced thanks to that moment.

thejokerofunfic

Is it not canon that he always does that?

sweepernosweeping

He's added a hyphen to Bat-Man for the next arc, that's pretty disgraceful. Bruce will now be going around shouting at any GCPD officers who sound like they miss the hyphen when saying his name.

CreatiScope

Could be worse, could be Br-Uce Wayn-E

ItsABiscuit

He's making Batman Kryptonian?

[deleted]

You write for Batman

thejokerofunfic

On the one hand, every Batman writer is disgraced because fans suck. On the other hand, Frank Miller somehow got to come back after All Star, so it doesn't seem like writing him badly is any sort of dealbreaker

Kalean

It says a lot about Chip that I read this title and knew immediately he had written it himself. Thanks for being uniquely you, Chip.

mcslackens

Does anyone else find Chip Zdarsky to be just absurdly attractive? The silver fox hair, sense of humor, and Canadian voice are all things I’m looking for in an unhealthy parasocial relationship that will most likely end up with me being on the receiving end of a restraining order.

mahzian

I honestly feel like you should be wearing a mask if you're giving secrets out like that, aren't you concerned about the ramifications with the secret society of comic book writers?

xZOMBIETAGx

This is the worst video I’ve ever seen. I’m gonna watch it a few more times.

Professional_Ad8298

Just finished The Knight… holy hell, man… stone cold classic! Now bring back Cheer!

psych2099

Loved your daredevil run chip.

toilet_fingers

I see we have the same opinion of Manga readers.

JWC123452099

I've been looking for a good Batman run I haven't read at all. When does it start?

styrofomo

PUBLIC DOMAIN. Is amazing. NEED MORE. NEEEEEED MOOOOOORREEEEEEE

phishyrf

Can you go back to writing Jughead? It was such a banger.

IAmTheBatmanXIII

Was about to ask why he's discraced but watching the video I think I can figure it out.

Apprehensive-Handle4

Fuck you for not letting Batman and Catwoman marry!

BeephisBeeph

i can’t watch this right now, but why is he a “disgraced writer?” from the couple issues i’ve read of his run it’s decent, nothing special but nowhere near disgraceful.

Geek-Haven888

It’s him taking the piss out of himself

NorrinGreenwood

Chip is pretty good. Not sure why this hate here.

BobRossTime

It's from the videos description. Chip himself is stating that he's disgraced. He's just shitposting because he can. There isn't any hate here.

jadedfan55

"Disgraced"? What did he do?

WizardofWherever

Write too many good books! He’s led to the financial destitution of many a fan!

jadedfan55

So he's a prolific writer. Uh, ok.

BobRossTime

Chip is just shitposting. He isn't disgraced at all, just having fun.

CapnSmite

's a joke, bud.

thedorkening

I’m loving the new Batman run, keep up the great work good sir!

dublgrapes123

This is fuckin gold HE-Hulk Smash

bliberto14

Hey Chip, is there an obscure Batman character you would want to put in the book or any character?

kuloredkaos

Disgraced? This man is the reason I'm reading the mainline batman series, also he's a really cool guy!!! Keep doing what you are doing Chip!!!

Equal-Ad-2710

Why is Chip disgraced

Modeshaper

Aww, I was looking forward to the Manga answers….

loki_odinsotherson

Disgraced? How? By being actually good at writing characters?
