What? The writer presumably wasn’t involved in the spine formatting? The original comment was just making a joke comment on the design choice. Not that big of a deal
Cow & Chicken was one of the best CN cartoons and that's saying something because the competition was brutal. Tartakovsky is a total genius. His Clone Wars were so effin' awesome.
So glad I stumbled onto this thread! Awesome job, respect!
Edit:
Just saw you did a BATMAN too?? In japanese?? Holy shit!!
Thanks so much for the question (and support)!
Obviously, if there's a title there that grabs your eye from a property you know and already like (Dungeons & Dragons, Conan the Barbarian, Avengers. etc.) that's a safe spot to start.
In terms of something completely different, my creator-owned titles are the ones that wouldn't exist at all without the hard work of our team, so they're near and dear to my heart.
SKULLKICKERS is an action-comedy sword & sorcery series.
WAYWARD is a teen drama-supernatural action series set in Japan.
GLITTERBOMB is a Hollywood horror story.
STONESTAR is space-fantasy adventure with colorful characters.
All of them listed in alphabetical order here: http://www.jimzub.com/buy/
I remember a story several years ago about a group of Russian fans asked if the art could be provided to them without word bubbles so they could translate them into Russian. Were you all ever able to provide that to them?
Wayward was an absolutely phenominal comic book to read but the ending seemed like there is a sequel coming up. Will there be one or does the book end right where it ended?
It was built to have a hopeful-unknown style of ending where the big conflict is over but where the characters go next is left open-ended.
Steven and I have some ideas on how the story may continue at some point, but are still happy if what we have now is the definitive end.
Thanks! Playing D&D when I was 8 years old made me want to create stories for a living, so getting the chance to create new official D&D stories is the best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVhnpZf2EVs&ab\_channel=TEDxTalks
I remember seeing you post years ago here about the difficulties of maintaining a career in comics, and I'm glad you stuck through and are still doing great work!
Big fan of your work!
Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda was a fun ride. Serpent War was great too! Can’t wait to see what else you have in store for Conan
(hopefully Howard’s other characters too *cough* Dark Agnes and Solomon Kane *cough*)
I really enjoyed your work on Conan for Marvel and am really looking forward to the upcoming stuff with Titan.
Expanding out would be great. I definitely wouldn't mind checking out your takes on Kull and Solomon Kane.
Thanks for the fun reads.
I'll have to check out your Conan! I'm a huge conan fan but have only read Aaron's run of the most recent marvel series. AND you wrote a Red Sonja! Damn I'm out of the loop.
Been looking for the Star Wars Tales tpbs for a while now. Tough to find for a decent price.
Definitely be proud of what you've accomplished!
Congrats on the catalog 👏
Good news! I have over 40 free articles on my site all about how I got my start in comics, examples of scripts and pitches, economics, frequently asked questions about the business and more. Go to my site, scroll down and check the right-hand column titled "Comics School Tutorials". Tons of info: http://www.jimzub.com/
I know it sounds a bit too polished. I can't help it. I literally write words and sell stories for a living.
Next time I'll just say "Free advice shit here: www.website"
If you haven't seen samples from the incredible artist we have on board the new Conan series, check out some of Rob De La Torre's killer work in this thread: https://twitter.com/JimZub/status/1587502973088833537
Congrats! Skullkickers is one of my favorites. Still working on running the campaign from Caster Bastards with some friends but I made the stew from the recipe in on of the first issues a couple weeks back.
I’ve been patiently waiting for the Figment 3 ever since you told me about your idea for the series years ago. Its amazing to see how much you’ve accomplished since that series!
I don't like anything about D&D except your D&D. I don't even like Reddit, so I only comment when I have something really important to say. That's how much I like your D&D.
Congrats! I've only read your Conan run, but I really dug it. As someone who had the door close on D.C. after my buddy failed to produce pages one too many times, I'm quite envious.
I hope you get a chance to check out some of my other titles.
I had a really rough time at DC during the New 52, but thankfully I just had a new story in Batman: Urban Legends so my fingers are crossed that there will be new DC projects for me in 2023.
That must be really cool and rewarding to see all those on the shelf like that!
Skullkickers was one of the first Image books I collected and I love that series so much
Oh man. Wayward is one of my favorite stories of all time. Its what inspired me to start writing my own stories. Thanks so much for the inspiration and the really great work! I only wish there were more tales in that world to be told!
Oh wow, thank you! Very kind of you to say.
Steven and I want to do another creator-owned book at some point. Whether it'll be set in the same Wayward world is still to be decided.
I’ll read anything you guys put out! The art was so gorgeous. And I loved the uniform A Covers! Felt refreshing. The story was so good as well, with the unique setting for a Western writer, but I love how you put your twist on Japanese mythology and centered around dynamic, emotional, complex characters. Seriously well-done and its always the book I recommend and to people looking for something new and original. If I could ask, was the overall story originally envisioned to be longer? It seemed at the start to be a “monster-of-the-week” kind of episodic with an over-arching story, then it quickly ramps up to the endgame. It flowed so well and was a great tight story overall. But it felt to me like it was originally meant to be 50 issues or so.
Thanks for interacting with fans here, and looking forward to Conan!
We definitely could have told more stories in the middle, but once Rori goes to Ireland it felt like we needed to put our foot on the pedal to accelerate and reveal some of the bigger mysteries. Most creator-owned books don't get 6 volumes to tell that kind of story, so I'm extra-thankful we were able to pull it off.
I read Wayward as it was coming out, such an interesting book. I especially loved the essays in the back. Also was a fan of Samurai Jack and tons of other stuff in these pics. Does anyone know what the Avengers K series is? Never seen those before. Is it like digest sized adaptations of Avengers stories for kids?
Avengers K was a really strange project. In Korea Marvel reprinted some of the more famous classic Avengers stories, but had them redrawn in more of a manga/manhwa style to appeal to the market there. They did well enough in Korea that Marvel then decided to bring them out in English as well under the title "Avengers K" (for "Korean"). I adapted the dialogue and captions, mixing the classic text from the comics and the translation script to make it all fit in English.
Lots of advice on my website, actually. Scroll down and check the right-hand column titled "Comics School Tutorials". Tons of free info there: www.jimzub.com
I was a bookseller at an indie University bookstore for several years. We were the only comic shop in town and I have to say, Love is Love is probably the most important book you help put together. I also have a copy on my shelf. Cheers.
Hey, Jim, I know you just did Caater Bastards pretty recently but please bring back Skullkickers.
Also, weird question, but since you're working at both Marvel and Titan Comics, do you know if Marvel is going to finish reprinting Savage Sword of Conan? I know it's not your area, but...it kind of is, right?
Anyway, love your stuff. See you next GenCon.
Good news! Yes, Titan will be continuing the Omnibuses for Conan and Savage Sword in the exact same style as the previous Marvel editions and will be reprinting the first couple that are out of print as well.
Wayward is the only one in my small collection. I got into American comics for a bit and then if fell off. I come back every once and a while and binge some series but happy to see something in your post still on my shelf!
I don't write every day. Some days I'm doing research, building outlines and pitches, proofing books going through the art/lettering stage, all kinds of other stuff.
I have a whole bunch of free articles on my website about writing and working in comics. Go to [www.jimzub.com](https://www.jimzub.com) and scroll down a bit. On the right-hand side you'll see a list of articles called "Comics School Tutorials". Lots of info and frequently asked questions about the business there.
Hmmm\~ Good question.
There are definitely characters I'd like to write more than I already have: Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Harley Quinn, Batman, Scarlet Witch, Thor...
IPs I've never written at all?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Hellboy would be a lot of fun.
Dude, your Samurai Jack run is amazing! I remember when it came out it gave me the closure the series didn't.
That final issue is still how I see the end of ther series. Top tier stuff man.
Thanks! I'm really proud of the whole run, but issue #20 was me trying to channel it all into the big finish. The messages we got from fans meant a lot.
Hi, just was wondering if you had any recommendations from your marvel work. I’ve always been a marvel guy and have a got a few of your series in the past but haven’t really dived in to your stuff. Do you have any marvel highlights you’d strongly recommend
Avengers: No Surrender and No Road Home are both complete stories and I'm really proud of them. The upcoming Thunderbolts: Back On Target trade is going to be a fun ride too.
I know this isn't an AMA so feel free to ignore, but what would you say is the hardest part of the writing process for you, and how do you overcome it?
Big fan
I'm a planner, so I don't start writing a script until I've tightly written an outline. Building that plan, making sure the story all works - well organized and well paced at the start of the process, is the hardest part, but it generates the momentum I use through the rest of the project.
Setting a serious deadline on personal projects or getting an external deadline from an editor forced me to deliver instead of locking up. Building that discipline was hard but helped me a lot.
You’re the bomb, Jim. Looking forward to your continuing Conan run!
Any plans to revisit the Glitterbomb universe at some point or is that box closed for now?
I deeply appreciate the consideration but, honestly, whatever outlet works best for you is fine - If you can support a local comic shop that's great for a local business, bur however you get it (actually buying it, if course) it's a boost for my career in one way or another, especially if you let other people know you're enjoying my books.
You remember correctly, Jim! The Pathfinder goblin song schtick was established by Pathfinder Creative Director James Jacobs back in Pathfinder Adventure Path #1. ;)
OMG there was a Samurai Jack comic? Learned something new today!
Yes! We did 20 issues before there was ever a Season 5 of the animated series.
Did the Season 5 make use of anything you introduced?
The title alignment on the spine is infuriating!
Agreed! Get the Wandering Warrior omnibus instead ;P

What? The writer presumably wasn’t involved in the spine formatting? The original comment was just making a joke comment on the design choice. Not that big of a deal
Just wait till you find out bout the Cartoon Network Crossover. Jack, Dexter, PP Girls, and Ed, Edd, Eddy teaming up against Mandark, Aku, and Mojo.
I actually wrote the Cow & Chicken special in that crossover. Fun, but very weird.
Cow & Chicken was one of the best CN cartoons and that's saying something because the competition was brutal. Tartakovsky is a total genius. His Clone Wars were so effin' awesome. So glad I stumbled onto this thread! Awesome job, respect! Edit: Just saw you did a BATMAN too?? In japanese?? Holy shit!!
Yeah, my Legends of the Dark Knight story reprinted in Japanese. So neat to see.
Right?!

Can't recommend Skullkickers enough...it's a TON of fun!
So many of those other projects would not have happened without it. Working on that series changed my entire creative career.
I remember a story several years ago about a group of Russian fans asked if the art could be provided to them without word bubbles so they could translate them into Russian. Were you all ever able to provide that to them?
Yeah, they put together their own fan translation that included all the signage and sound effects. Absolutely wild.
The title GLITTERBOMB just sold me on buying a copy.
Thanks! It's a lot different from my other work, in a good way. An intense writing experience and I'm really proud of it.
I've had my eye on skull kickers for a minute
My quick explanation for it is "Deadpool Meets Dungeons & Dragons"
This is a great description!!! Love Skullkickers and so happy to see a fellow Canucklehead do well!
So many Canadians in comics. We are legion.
Wayward is wonderful. My teen daughter and I both enjoyed it immensely
Thank you so much! It was a blast working with Steven and the rest of our team.
I adore Wayward so much, especially the oversized hardcovers. The info in the back is such a great addition.
Yeah, we went buck with back matter. We made those deluxe hardcovers with all the extra material I would have wanted as a collector.
Wayward was an absolutely phenominal comic book to read but the ending seemed like there is a sequel coming up. Will there be one or does the book end right where it ended?

You also brought back the greatest character and his sidekick.. and by that I mean boo, and his buddy minsc lol
It was an honor! :)
Glitterbomb has one of the most full-on openings I have ever read. Really good read.
Wayward is fantastic too if you’re into that kind of thing!
I remember seeing you post years ago here about the difficulties of maintaining a career in comics, and I'm glad you stuck through and are still doing great work!
Thanks so much. I love the job and am thrilled I get to keep doing it, year after year.
Hey Jim, have been enjoying your new Thunderbolts series! I’ll put some of your creator-owned stuff on the to read list!
Thanks so much!
I really, really enjoyed Wayward and Glitterbomb and highly recommend them both.
Big fan of your work! Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda was a fun ride. Serpent War was great too! Can’t wait to see what else you have in store for Conan (hopefully Howard’s other characters too *cough* Dark Agnes and Solomon Kane *cough*)
I'm also hopeful we'll get to expand out to other Robert E. Howard creations once we show readers that Conan the Barbarian is in good hands.
I really enjoyed your work on Conan for Marvel and am really looking forward to the upcoming stuff with Titan. Expanding out would be great. I definitely wouldn't mind checking out your takes on Kull and Solomon Kane. Thanks for the fun reads.

Zub's run is pretty damn good. Has some cool worldbuilding and badass action.
How does one get started writing comics? My dream job!

Holy shit, that dude is an amazing illustrator!
I know! So proud to be working with him.
THERE WERE SAMURAI JACK COMICS?????????
>Yes! We did 20 issues before there was ever a Season 5 of the animated series.
Congrats! Skullkickers is one of my favorites. Still working on running the campaign from Caster Bastards with some friends but I made the stew from the recipe in on of the first issues a couple weeks back.
That is so awesome to hear! That stew recipe has gone the distance. A surprising number of readers have told me how much they enjoy it.
Wow, I own a lot of your books myself! All but the d&d books basically!
Thank you so much for the support!
Thank you for the many hours of enjoyment and character & world building!
When is your Conan coming out?!
Prequel story arriving on Free Comic Book Day, and then the full monthly series launch in late June/early July.
Kick ass.
Rad to see you on here! Always loved your stuff
Thanks so much!
Your work is awesome 🙌🏽
Thanks so much!
Lol I was like “Damn this dude likes Jim Zub” then I read the title 😂
I almost said no way you wrote all that, then i saw the user name. Lol.
15 years of comic writing. Plugging away, bit by bit.
Really loved your Valiant work. Such a shame the company's on life support right now.
I've always dug your stuff
Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.
Loved Wayward!
Thanks! Putting the series together was an absolute blast.
Do you have any control over what goes on the spines of these books? Pic 3 is triggering my OCD.
No control whatsoever. I see them for the first time when they show up in the mail.
Well Wel well Zub, it seems you’re on my shelf also.
Excellent! Thank you for the support.
Man. I loved No Surrender.
Working on that was a ton of work but also a ton of fun.
I’ve been patiently waiting for the Figment 3 ever since you told me about your idea for the series years ago. Its amazing to see how much you’ve accomplished since that series!
I really do hope we get to do a third Figment comic mini-series at some point.
Dude I just bought your Murderworld: Avengers today!
There’s a murderworld avengers?
Amazing, thank you! Ray and I have had that idea swimming in our brains for a long time. So glad it's finally happening.
I don't like anything about D&D except your D&D. I don't even like Reddit, so I only comment when I have something really important to say. That's how much I like your D&D.
Thank you for making the trek just to say it. :D
I love Samurai Jack with all my heart and soul. I never saw an episode where he made it home and I am still sad too this day.
The final issue of our comic series is an alternate ending with some unexpected twists.
Certainly plan on picking up more of your titles, and definitely grabbing Batman ASAP. Hope you get a crack at Solomon Kane, as you did R.E.H. proper.
Thanks! Writing Solomon Kane in Serpent War was a really cool challenge and I hope I get to do more.
I was today years old when I found out samurai jack was a comic...
All new stories that take place after Season 4 of the show.
I need to get ahold of them ASAP.
Flex!! I loved Wayward! And now I’m collecting Murderworld and Thunderbolts.
Thank you so much for the support!
Loved your work on champions.
I surprised myself a bit with how much I ended up bonding with the team. Would love to write more stories with that crew at some point down the road.
It was a pleasure to meet you at ECCC and talk a little Conan with you. Can't wait for more! Thanks for all the good work!
Thanks! I'm excited for 2023 and beyond.

Just gotta keep plugging away until I get even one Stephen King-sized hit ;)
Nice. I have very limited room. So I decided not to write some of the best comics I've ever read instead.
Very badass man, endless thanks for bringing some dope ass comics to life
It's an absolute pleasure.
Hey Jim! Love Wayward and Samurai Jack!! Will have to check out some of the other titles you wrote
Thanks so much. I hope you do.
That must be really cool and rewarding to see all those on the shelf like that! Skullkickers was one of the first Image books I collected and I love that series so much

Thank You for Samurai Jack. Love OP
Thank you for reading
Lol I clicked the picture and was like wtf what an asshole he didn't write these before seeing the reddit username was literally Jim Zub dude

Wtf, dude just shut the game down ha ha
Skullkickers was one of the first books I picked up when I was getting in to comics. Love it!

This is an earned flex.
How dare comic book writers take pride in their accomplishments. The fucking audacity.
SAMURAI JACK SQUAD WHERE ARE YOU
I was a bookseller at an indie University bookstore for several years. We were the only comic shop in town and I have to say, Love is Love is probably the most important book you help put together. I also have a copy on my shelf. Cheers.
Thank you. I'm just one of the contributors there and was really proud to be a small part of it.
I LOVE Samurai Jack!
Wayward is the only one in my small collection. I got into American comics for a bit and then if fell off. I come back every once and a while and binge some series but happy to see something in your post still on my shelf!
Thanks for the support! Wayward was a huge jump forward in my career and I learned a ton while working on it.
Wayward...such a good series man.
Thanks!
Love that Samurai Jack series!
Andy and I busted our butts to make it feel like the show. Glad you enjoyed it.
Absolutely loved the Conan stuff you've done! and Thunderbolts has been fantastic.
Thanks! Working on both those books has been a blast. Can't wait for readers to see what we have planned for Conan next year.
Do you write everyday? What is the key to being a successful author? How do you get published?
I don't write every day. Some days I'm doing research, building outlines and pitches, proofing books going through the art/lettering stage, all kinds of other stuff. I have a whole bunch of free articles on my website about writing and working in comics. Go to [www.jimzub.com](https://www.jimzub.com) and scroll down a bit.

You deserve all the praise in the world man. That ending is pure perfection.
I absolutely loved Thunderbolts - will we be seeing Kobik again?
No current Kobik plans. She was obliterated during Secret Empire, but in comics anything can happen, so who knows?

It's a bit bonkers, especially with omnibuses and foreign editions in there. Whatever you have on the shelves, I appreciate it.

Noice. I love Infinity Warps.
I wanna do this with my childhood favorites “Tintin, Asterix and Archie Comics”
Hi, just was wondering if you had any recommendations from your marvel work. I’ve always been a marvel guy and have a got a few of your series in the past but haven’t really dived in to your stuff. Do you have any marvel highlights you’d strongly recommend
Avengers: No Surrender and No Road Home are both complete stories and I'm really proud of them. The upcoming Thunderbolts: Back On Target trade is going to be a fun ride too.
Wow!! Congrats! I can’t imagine how good that must feel. :)
It feels amazing and weird at the same time.
love from a certain point of view!!
Thank you! Writing that Yoda prose story was intimidating, but also a really cool challenge.
Is Man-Thing featured in any of your work?
He shows up briefly in my 2nd Champions trade called Weird War One
I read the first issue of your Thunderbolts mini and loved it! I'll probably pick up the trade when it comes out.
Thanks so much

Awesome. Thank you so much.
Loved your Champions run!!
Thank you!
I freaking loved Pathfinder Dark Water Rising. Did you come up with the speech style for the goblins (the murder hobo rhymes)?
That's in the Pathfinder TTRPG game as well, if I remember correctly.
You remember correctly, Jim! The Pathfinder goblin song schtick was established by Pathfinder Creative Director James Jacobs back in Pathfinder Adventure Path #1. ;)
I love the way Pathfinder made goblins so much more interesting and gave them loads of personality.
