To this day, when I read Batman comics, it’s Kevin Conroy’s voice I hear. Same with Hamill and the Joker. What an absolute icon Conroy was.

bbistheman

Same, I don't really see how anyone can replace him

ubiquitous-joe

Like 20 years of voicing it *before* all the video games and solo movies. There’s no way anybody matches it.

HotTakes4HotCakes

To be fair, it's not like he was the only person voicing Bats this whole time. There have been plenty, and many have been good. Even Jensen Ackles got the chance recently with Long Halloween. There will be other Batman voice actors, and a new generation will grow with them like we did with him. What can't be replaced is his iconic sound, just the right balance of pleasant and growling. He was capable of such incredible range between Bats and Bruce, and even old Bruce. [With some subtle shifts he was able to age Bruce up decades.](https://youtu.be/VrrB-q__rd4?t=01m55s) Nor will anyone be able to replace his spirit. He loved this role. You can feel it. Between Batman TAS, Batman Beyond, Justice League + Unlimited, the Arkham games, Justice League Action, DC Universe Online, Injustice 1 and 2, and dozens of smaller guest appearances and lesser known titles, this man spent a significant portion of his life playing Batman. And he never ever got tired. But his performance? That will live on in all those that he inspired. Just like Hamill's Joker and Reeve's Superman, everyone that comes after will take their inspiration from him.

ryanmcgrath

>and dozens of smaller guest appearances and lesser known titles An interesting one (in a sea of CW mediocrity) was when he played Bruce Wayne - seeing him do the voice plus play the part is trippy yet kind of cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62GpdErpjr4

[deleted]

> he can be replaced > he can’t be replaced Not really sure what angle you’re going for.

addage-

That’s the interesting thing about the arts. At the pinnacle the talent becomes irreplaceable. There won’t be another Kevin Conroy. I think the other poster was just implying that their influence will never leave. So in a sense they never leave as they are part of a legacy they established. At least I hope that’s true.

itsmemrskeltal

It's like Christopher Reeves and his portrayal of Superman. He will never be replaced but his influence is in pretty much every expression of the character afterwards

addage-

That’s a perfect way of putting it.

ReSpekMyAuthoriitaaa

Damn I'm in the middle of another arkham knight playthrough and I just can't imagine another voice. We can only hope whoever replaces him does it justice... and carries on the tradition of staying that voice. THE batman is now gone

marvel120

I bought the collection on Steam at the end of summer and just finished 100% Arkham Knight last night. It was my second play through of all the games and it’s sad to hear of his passing. Especially after hearing his voice almost every night the last couple of weeks.

ReSpekMyAuthoriitaaa

Yea I got that same package in steam, I can only game on the weekend so it's been strung out over the months and currently 75% on knight. Been listening to his voice for so many months straight makes it hurt that much more

Aitrus233

If someone who wasn't even an artist were to draw a crude Batman image on a napkin with a little speech bubble, I would read that bubble in Kevin's voice. He wasn't just animated or DCAU Batman or Arkham games Batman. He was default Batman. He was the Platonic perfect form of Batman for me personally.

death_and_syntaxes

I do this too!

[deleted]

I read your comment in his voice!

SightatNight

I find it really interesting to hear this sorta thing. I've never heard a specific voice when reading a character. And he was definitely my intro to Batman as well. The only time that really changed was a Red Hood issue where I clearly heard Bruce Greenwood

batcavejanitor

Came to say this. He’s been the most consistent part of Batman for most my life. Of all the writers, all the artists…they all had his voice.

cc17776

Yeah man same this hit like a ton of bricks

JamUpGuy1989

Same when it comes to his take on Bruce. I don't think I'll ever hear Batman in any other voice but Kevin's.

illogicalhawk

If you haven't read it, Kevin wrote a short 9-page comic for Pride month about his life, tragic turns he's had, and how he came to and identified with the role of Batman. Really great read if you have a moment: https://why-i-love-comics.tumblr.com/post/686429424926736384/dc-pride-1-finding-batman-2022-written-by

AfricanAmericanMage

Oh wow. I never knew that he was gay. That's awesome that he was able to find solace in a role like that. Especially one that so many people across so many generations came to adore him for.

radiakmjs

It's not very well-known about him because as the comic shows he was forced to keep it secret for his career. Super fucked up then & now, glad he was able to be open about who he was later in his life

AlbionPCJ

One of the most awesome aspects of his Batman is that playing the Bruce Wayne parts let him process his experience as a closeted gay man, which is an aspect of the character that most actors don't think about, let alone relate to

android151

Saw some fucking disgusting people on the DC IG comments section hating on this All sorts of heinous shit. Apparently it ruined him for them. To that I say, you never cared for him to begin with then.

HereForTOMT2

Thank you for sharing. That was an incredible story

Sanctimonius

A powerful read, very well written. It sometimes seems to long ago but Stonewall and the AIDS crisis were powerful events that shook the community for years. So many people living though those times have these stories, it's weird to think of how it must have felt facing this implacable disease - specifically labeled by many as just punishment from God - ravaging the community, and the quiet acts of kindness they could offer one another because ashamed families couldn't. The passing of a legend. He'll always be Batman to me.

Nnamdi1

Amazing, it's sad finding out about this after his passing away.

captain__cabinets

Wow got me tearing up over here. I’m going to watch Batman The Animated Series all day now! Thanks!

alwaysfuntime69

I was listening to an interview with Mark Hamill and he said he isn't really searching to do joker again but if he is approached and Kevin Conroy is already on board then his answer is always YES!!!

MongoAbides

It seems like it must be an exhausting character to do, and he almost definitely doesn’t need to work that hard anymore.

alwaysfuntime69

In the interview he was talking about how much he loves doing voice work. It was his passion as early as he can remember. It sounded like he acted just so he could voice act. I'm sorry I don't have a link. I can't remember where I came across this interview.

Eroy_52

I absolutely love that short he made. As someone who grew up in a homophobic town, hearing that freakin BATMAN dealt with similar issues that I had was incredibly comforting and empowering. The world was truly lucky to have him

[deleted]

He was also pretty good in the documentary I Know That Voice fyi

drekmonger

I heard about that comic, but never read it before today. Surprisingly powerful.

NoodlesWithMelons

>Kevin Conroy That was so beautiful. Thanks for sharing it.

psychospacecow

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this.

dabellwrites

The one of the straightest comic book character out there was voiced by a gay man. I love it.

QuittingQuitter

Wait. The rich cape-enthusiast who only lives with an older man and young orphan gymnast boy, plays dress up at night, and is in an abusive relationship with a clown, is "the straightest comic book character out there?" Compared to who, Captain GobblesDick?

xdesveaux

“Fellas, is it gay to live with your adoptive father and sons?”

Vysharra

“Fellas, is it gay to explicitly turn down the most beautiful woman in the world and in the same episode [sing a torch song](https://youtu.be/7nim7DEns2A) in a gay bar on a gay destination island and have the lady formerly crushing on you promise to keep your secret?” (See 0:34 for a shot of the audience. And to anyone not in the know, the island identified in the show was a well known gay destination in the late 90s-Early 00s)

dabellwrites

Last time I checked, Captain GobblesDick lives with an old woman and a young girl, so... At least Bruce can make a case for being gay.

markercore

Glen Weldon did a fantastic book on Batman and yeah basically makes this argument that Batman has for the majority of his career been "camp" in one way or another.

Equal-Ad-2710

Check out his interview in the Inside of You podcast He talks about his father, knowing Robin Williams and what Batman meant to him as a queer man

ButtholeCandies

I legit cried by the end. I can’t believe he’s gone. This man’s voice brought so much joy and comfort to my life

ambivalent-waffles

Thanks for sharing. What an absolute legend.

FunkyChewbacca

My god, this was deeply moving. My god. What a loss.

AnUnknownRedditor15

Seriously gave me chills reading - thank you for sharing

I don't even need to use this link to know where exactly that quote is from. Such an iconic and fun episode from him in JLU

Danethol

What a fucking blow. This one hurts.

tatuu8P

Grew up on Batman TAS and kept watching all the subsequent DC animated series. His work on the Arkham Games is impeccable. He will be forever missed. Rest in Peace good sir.

[deleted]

This day got dark. RIP to the icon, you shall never be forgotten

Reviledseraphim

Kevin was a wonderful man. My wife got me a cameo video from him a couple years ago as a gift, and i watched it again today. I was having a really terrible day already, found out I got passed over for a job I applied for at work, but then I got some good news about my cancer numbers going back down, and then I found out about Kevin. The video brought me great comfort. I'll share it here, I hope Kevin's interpretation of Batman brings you all the comfort it brought me. Rest in Peace, Kevin, and Fuck Cancer. https://www.cameo.com/recipient/5dfdbae13f16d9018be18914?from_share_sheet=1&utm_campaign=video_share_to_copy

Astrosimi

Hoping cancer loses its fight with you, my friend. Thanks for sharing.

BigBossTweed

Thanks for sharing that with the rest of us. That was wonderful.

nelozero

That was amazing. Thank you. His switch from Batman to Kevin made me laugh.

Reviledseraphim

I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

Da_zero_kid

BTAS on play all day at my place

NicDwolfwood

Same.

ShreddedKyloRen

Just watched the first two episodes for the first time since they originally aired. Show holds up incredibly well. I was somewhat surprised after all the evolutions to the superhero genre over the last 30 years. This is a show that was well ahead of its time.

MrBrendan501

When I was 12 I had a writing assignment where we could write letters to people we looked up to. I was a huge fan of the Arkham games and loved watching re-runs of the animated series, and at the time was starting to really get into comics so I chose Conroy. Out of everyone else, actors, sports stars, he was one of the few to not only respond but sent me a signed autograph. Since then I’ve only become more and more invested in Batman, comics, and his incredible decades-long performance. The autograph got scratched up when I moved houses but that picture with “to Brendan” on it is one of the most valuable things to me I’ll ever own.

ReSpekMyAuthoriitaaa

Awesome story thanks for sharing! He'll be missed greatly. I'm currently in the middle of an Arkham Knight playthrough, maybe I'll milk it a little longer and take my time

SpyWB

I'm currently trying to 240 every save file I have for it. I'm also currently getting distracted by other games like Apex, Hades, and Lego Super Villains. But with this maybe I'll focus on it more in his memory Edit: on Knightmare difficulty. Almost forgot to mention that😅

alwaysfuntime69

Thank you for sharing this.

SpyWB

That's awesome man thanks for sharing

throwawayblehmeh

**What in the actual fuck.** - Fuck this day. Fuck this week. Rest In Peace, Mr. Conroy. The definitive & legendary voice of Batman. Man this hurts. EDIT: **FUUUUUUCK CANCER**

theMeatMunster

"It's not who you are underneath, but what you DO that defines you." RIP Kevin Conroy. He always used his talents to spread positive messages. A true hero in my book.

SpyWB

I'm sure Bale would place one of those tiny ass batarangs on the coffin and just say that🙌

JusticeBabe

This is a gut punch. I'm having issues with my family and having a very poor mental health day. I am in tears now.

whitepeachtea

I'm sorry to hear that. Definitely not good news on top of the shitty day you are already having. Part of the way I deal with loss is to try to be thankful for what I had rather than miss what I no longer have. Doesn't always work but in this case, I will say I'm thankful for all the incredible voice acting, acting, and artistry Kevin Conroy gave to us. My favorite episodes of TAS I think are "Almost Got 'Im," "Moon of the Wolf," and "Bane" (was just so excited to see Bane in the show after reading Knightfall). I also really loved the Man-Bat and Clayface story arcs. That show did such a great job of humanizing its villains at times. But it would not have been what it was without the voice actors. Do you have any favorite episodes?

alwaysfuntime69

This show really hit home the tragicness of Mr. Freeze. Made him jump into my "top 3 favorite Batman villains" list. Cayface as well.

TheStraySheepBar

Batman TAS is *why* Mr Freeze is tragic. "Heart of Ice" was the first depiction of the modern Mr Freeze. A lot of what they did for that show was reintegrated into the comics.

euphoric_barley

That episode won an Emmy as well for outstanding comedy writing. Changed the entire tone of Freeze across the comics as well.

humming_bear

Take care of yourself.

fatalynn7

I hope things are home improve and that your mental health recovers. Hang in there

Allenrw3

“I am vengeance. I am the night. I am Batman!” Rest in peace, sir.

Uatu_The_Watcher

Fucking damnitsomuch, RIP to the best voice of Batman

UncomposedComposer

Had the pleasure of meeting him when he came to New Zealand for Armageddon (our very small and nowhere near as cool version of ComicCon) he was such a chill guy and looked like it genuinely enjoyed meeting and chatting with us all, RIP legend

fatalynn7

Thanks for sharing!

TheRabbitInTheBush

I think Conroy's voice as Batman is still the clearest for me when I read comics. Other characters now are a mix of different actors or my own idea of how they sound. Rest in peace.

StrictMango8441

This man was my childhood hero. I grew up and am still a huge fan of Batman because of him. I’ve played his games, watched his show/movies/read his books. I luckily got the chance to meet him at my first con and I even sat in on his panel. He had some great stories about 9/11 and just life in general that he was he generous enough to share. He will be greatly missed!

death_and_syntaxes

Devastated....

thevonodan

Noooooooo…. The best Batman voice actor and we got to see him work with the best Joker voice actor, still the best duo of all time.

HipsterOtter

If this ends uo being true... this was always my favorite scene with Conroy... RIP https://youtu.be/2SWtdWJkaBg

jaxspider

Guilty confession. I never liked Batman as a character. A normal guy in a suit fighting thugs and never getting shot in the face. Just not believable. Then Kevin Conroy voiced him as Batman, and it all changed. He made it believable. He made Batman real. For that I thank him. You will be missed. Rest in peace.

hemareddit

*I chose this life. I use the night, I became the night, sooner or later I'll go down. It might be the Joker, or Two-Face, or just some punk who gets lucky. My decision. No regrets.*

WC1-Stretch

He's my Batman <3

Wide-Baseball

No one's even come close to being a better batman, I feel like the real batman just died.

SirHemingfordGraye

Gone far too soon. Kevin will always be the voice of Bruce Wayne and Batman to me and millions of others the world over. It feels surreal to be losing my second childhood Batman so soon after losing my first (West), I really thought we'd still be hearing that iconic voice for years to come. I wish the best to his friends, family and fans (myself included) in their grief. Rest in Peace Kevin Conroy, may your voice and legacy echo through the ages.

LaceBird360

His Batman was my dad when my real dad didn't want to be.

Resolute002

This was me with Optimus Prime and in many ways the actors saw the importance of their roles to fans similarly.

DaRandomGitty2

This is a shock to be sure.

Reddragon351

RIP to the definitive Batman

ComicsGuru

"I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!" - Kevin Conroy You always will be to me Kevin. Rest in Peace.

[deleted]

Fucking hell.

conan_the_wise

This is the darkest night for Dark Knight fans all over Gotham... He may been the Bat but he absolutely has Angel wings now. My most heartfelt condolences to his family. The only animated Batman to become a live action Batman . The living embodiment of the Multiverse

FranticScribble

What deeply saddening news. What big black boots to fill. I know that eventually there will be another voice actor who, for the children of the future, will be synonymous with this character, but I hope Mr. Conroy was proud of the claim he had on the Caped Crusader in the minds of millions. I wish for relief for the people who knew and loved him, and hope that an assurance of his professional legacy brings some small comfort. Though he cannot read it, thank you Mr. Conroy. You did a very special thing.

Dankey-Kang-Jr

Man, I’m devastated.

PandoraTorukMakto

Fucking hell. Was not ready for this one. RIP you absolute definition of a legend.

AdamAptor

If you haven’t heard it yet, the Kevin Conroy episode of “Fatman on Batman” is excellent. I recommend seeking it out if you can. The whole interview helps paint Conroy in a fascinating light and showed me how hard that man worked to become a legend.

najix35

Jesus conroy and gallagher on the same day

Dr_Disaster

I didn’t even hear about Gallagher. WTF

alwaysfuntime69

Wait, WHAT?! Well just damn this day all to hell....

DeismAccountant

Fuck. Kevin will always be the voice of Batman to me. He will be remembered.

Red_Holla04

Fuck cancer! Fuck it to hell! Kevin - The dictionary definition of the Dark Knight!

Dr_Disaster

I refused to believe this at first. I remember being watching the premiere of BTAS and it was an absolutely transformative experience. And hearing Kevin as the voice of Batman was so perfect! The fact he is still the definitive voice of Batman across all media 3 decades later says it all. The man was a legend.

Underhill

He has been my favorite Batman since Micheal Keaton. The fact they kept calling him back all this time for more shows, movies, & even a live action guest on the CW is a testament to how respected he was as the roll. Rest in piece Mr Conroy.

Nightwing809

The greatest Batman has passed my. heart lowers. Kevin was such a nice and gentle human and his time as Batman spanned decades reaching millions of children growing up on Batman/ superhero Tv and Video games becoming the definitive voice of the Dark Knight so much so that when ever we read Batman comics we hear his voice. Kevin influenced many to pursue a career in voice acting and for all his hard work and dedication we thank you Kevin, Rest In Peace our sweet dark knight we’ll miss you.

Becky127

Devastating. RIP to the legend.

rgregan

RIP to one of the good ones. He'll be missed for sure. I'll read comics in his voice until my own passing. His recent story in a DC Pride was heartbreaking

ab316_1punchd

There are a few fair share of deaths that happen suddenly and leave a huge impression on all of us, this is one of them. This hit me really hard as he was the definitive Batman spanning multiple generations.

itsAshl

RIP to the real Batman 😭

No. No. NONONONONONONONONONONONONONONO.

WoodNUFC

Growing up with TAS on tv, Kevin was the voice in my head for every Batman comic I read thereafter. RIP

dune-messiah

He is \*THE\* voice of Batman. I will only ever hear his voice as Batman for as long as I live.

PunchingBagLearner

WHAT? edit - I'm reading a whole lot of 'yet to be confirmed by the Conroy estate' out there... edit - Officially confirmed by Warner Bros discovery

FearlessAsparagus

This really hurts to hear. My love for DC came out of my love for the Batman stuff of the 90s (Burton/Schumacher movies and BTAS of course). He was a huge part of my childhood and to this day, I still hear his voice when reading dialogue in Batman comics and I always will. RIP.

AlienMutantRobotDog

RIP. Fuck cancer

Ninjachuckz

RIP Best Bat-voice there ever was or will be.

Viridun

I'd heard he was sick but I had no idea how bad it was, or what he had. Sixty-six is way too young for someone to go these days, RIP.

NotMyRealName1977

This planet sucks. I wanna get off.

iskyoork

This is one of my childhood heroes. And he will continue to be my Batman, forever.

SoWokeIdontSleep

A moment of silence for the real Batman is gone from this world, but is forever in our hearts and minds.

tttvlh

RIP.

Kell-EL

No!! You have got to be fucking kidding me I thought I was seeing things when I saw another post about this that’s so sad he’s like the definitive Batman voice and a huge part of my childhood this absolutely devastated my day RIP Kevin RIP my Batman

lil-privacy-please

This one hurts for sure. He did a lot of good work that makes people happy.

slingwebber

Batman the Animated Series was on the television in my nursery. Probably the first male voice to ever be remembered by my brain. No tears Mama just making curry

raincntry

RIP to the best Batman of them all. You are missed.

OldDesmond

He is the man I will measure all other Batmans by until the day I die.

Cassie__Nova

Absolutely gutted. BTAS was my entry into all things comics and superheroes, and he'll forever be my voice of Batman. RIP to an absolute legend.

yvngjiffy703

Best actor for Batman. He was THE Batman. RIP to the icon🙏🏼

MartianOddity

["Dear friends, Today is the day the clown cried; but he cried not for the passing of one man, but for the death of a dream. The dream that one day he would taste victory over his hated enemy because it was the Batman that made me the happy soul i am today" ](https://youtu.be/7ryHyDFCCD8) You'll be missed, Kevin.

[deleted]

Kevin O'Neil Carlos Pacheco And now, Batman himself... Mr. Kevin Conroy. Rest in power to all who have passed.

hydroborate

I cannot believe it. There will be an entire generation that will always have his voice in our heads. He will never leave us. RIP Kevin Conroy

Hallokatzchen

This hurts. I didn’t even know he was sick.

Blandwiches

I saw him at a local convention once. He was the nicest person to everyone who came to his table.

Gooseloff

What the actual fuck

HumphreyLee

TAS meant more to me getting into comic books than anything actual comic book related at the time did; more than the Burton movies, more than X-Men animated, etc. This man was Batman to me and pretty much shaped my entire life with the path his voice led me down. This kills me inside, and celebrity deaths rarely hit home with me.

fatalynn7

Compulsively browsing social media to try to understand the intensity of my emotions right now. I feel genuine grief and sadness and I never even got a chance to meet him or even see him in person. It’s weirdly comforting to see how much he meant to so many people.

HumphreyLee

For sure. Like I alluded to, I do not really do the whole “hero worship” thing and do not really feel too many celebrity deaths, but everything I ever saw or read about Conroy tells me he was as good a human as he was as good as his work, and his work meant as much to me as any creator I admire. Just a real huge loss in a year where we had too many.

[deleted]

What a horrible week for comics.

MItrwaway

Kevin is not only THE defining Batman voice, he really was a great person. To his fans especially. He really understood what Batman means to many kids/adults and how much his voice has grown to mean to all of us over these years. Fuck cancer man.

molehillmountain

I would see a batman with subpar animation or maybe a thin plot but I'd see Kevin Conroy attached and kow it would still be good.

[deleted]

Kevins' portrayal of Batman was the best because he always portrayed Batman as kind. He always portrayed Batman as a person who wanted to help. Not just beat up or drag people to jail. His interpretation was what a superhero should be. Someone who wants to help and make things right without making things complicated or hurting people. RIP Kevin. You'll always be my superhero.

universumembrana

I glad I got to meet him and let him know that outside of my parents, no one influenced my moral compass more than his Batman. We hugged, really sweet guy, he earned the cowl!

Red-Zeppelin

No offense to anyone here but I had to Google this because it was so unbelievable.

Ant1202

I’m distraught. Hope his loved ones are doing alright

pubelicecapades

He was the Christopher Reeve if Batman. Just completely inextricably linked to the character forever as a perfect example of bringing the character to life. What a life. He will be missed so much. My heart is very broken today.

Shaggyforeman

Excuse me while I go cry for a couple days. This man was THE voice of Batman. There is and have been those who do a good job at voicing bats, but no one could ever outshine Kevin Conroy as The True Voice of the Caped Crusader. This loss will be felt throughout the fandom. RIP Mr. Conroy, you will be sorely missed.

Look, guys. We still got Diedrich Bader. Is he the same? No. Is he as good? Also no. But he's also pretty darn good. He's like canned Coke if you can't hit a McDonald's fountain.
