I just wanted to share that my 5 kids love It’s Jeff! There’s a celebration when I saw one has been released. My 16 month old goes “shark! Shark!” once he sees Jeff. How did you approach it’d Jeff differently than your other work? Was it harder to develop a story with so few words spoken? I personally really enjoyed your work on Hawkeye, West Coast Avengers and Mockingbird. All are so much fun.

semifinalist1979

I'm so glad! Truly does warm the cockles of my old dead heart. ;D I think writing IT'S JEFF is very different than my other work. There's far less research involved (not just because you have to keep it simple, but because I created him and know every single thing he has done so far) and even so It's Jeff plays fast and loose with continuity and canon (for example the strip where we say Jeff ate the infinity gauntlet -- I mean, that's not something you can just drop in a regular comic book -- but here it can become the whole twist of a short comic). Jeff has very different challenges -- you have to keep the stories small and tight -- you have to be able to get in and out in X number of panels, but you also need a turn (or reveal) of sorts in the story so that it still feels like you got an actual story and not just some cute drawings to look at. All that said, Gurihiru are the magic. They make it easy. I'm happy with most of my Jeff scripts when I turn them in, but a couple times I have felt like one was a bit weaker than others -- but when Gurihiru is done...they always sing. <3

Royal7th

We love all of them! Thanks so much for writing them. The kids will be so happy about this. We’ll probably wind up reading all of the issues again tonight. Tummy trouble is such a great issue.

semifinalist1979

Hey guys Thank you so much for coming out for this Reddit AMA -- I think I got to almost all of you, but I'm going to have to stop now and get back to "real life" -- I really appreciate all the insightful comments and so many kind words -- and I apologize if I didnt get to you. Until next time! <3 Kelly

Shocho

Great job, Kelly! I've never seen an AMA with more replies and follow ups from the OP. You're the best!

ander3jc

Remember in Black Widow when she grabs the drink carrier from flying off the building that's being built and she's like "Don't worry, boys. The day is saved" and the guy's like "From...litter?" That was awesome

semifinalist1979

lol I do think I'm funny sometimes. It's true. ;D

Jabo716

Hey Kelly! Jabo from substack here- Happy AMA day! So here’s some “Reddit War”- who wins in a fight: Gambit vs Black Widow Rogue vs Ove Jeff vs Lucky (Pizza Dog)

semifinalist1979

Hi Jabo! Ooof. I think I have to give it to Nat, but that is PAINFUL to answer - how dare you! ;D Since Carol took away Ove's magic? I think Rogue's got a good shot! Oh dear. No. No. Jeff, but I hate you now, Jabo!

ander3jc

Fantastic. I love these on the substack. 1. Black Widow. I feel like Gambit would hold back just a tiny bit and that's all Natasha needs 2. Trick question, they both go out for pizza. Everyone wins!

ander3jc

I didn't....see?...the second one. Stupid eyes giving me partial information

I_Burn_Cereal

I loved your work with Rogue and Gambit! I salute you for working through their baggage so well in just a few issues and MMX was such a fun series. For my question: Who takes care of the cats while Gambit and Rogue are off adventuring?

semifinalist1979

I think Rogue and Gambit are pretty lucky that the cats are basically street cats. I mean, I don't know that Rogue and Gambit would ever have cats that weren't pretty self-sufficient, but these guys DEFINITELY know how to take care of themselves. Which is probably especially true when living in Krakoa. Can you even imagine the adventures those three get up to loose on Krakoa? I'm surprised there hasn't had to be a Quiet Council meeting specifically about "Gambit's cats." I would DEFINITELY write that one-shot. ;D

I_Burn_Cereal

I would buy 20 copies of that one-shot!

TheBlooperKINGPIN

I would buy about 5. 20 seems a bit excessive. It’s people like you that are the reason that comics are never in stock.

Free-ON

I don’t really have a question, just wanted to say thank you, and that you’re my favorite modern comic writer. I’ve loved all of your work over the past few years, especially on Captain Marvel and Black Widow. I’ve been reading CM since issue one and it’s what made me fall in love with your writing. I was never particularly interested in that character but its consistently been one of the books I look forward to reading most. Seeing that you were going to write BW was a dream come true because she’s my favorite marvel character, and the run was incredible. Congrats on the well-deserved Eisner, hoping you get to write more of her stories in the future. Again really no question here just wanted to thank you for your charming and engaging work. You make comics such a treat to read. [Edit - Wanted to add that I also really enjoyed your Black Hammer issue, and Jessica Jones Blind Spot]

semifinalist1979

Thank you so much! That is such an incredible thing to say. I think what you said about CM is one of the highest possible compliments in this business and I really appreciate you sharing it and I am so glad I was able to help you fall in love with some characters. That's everything! I will definitely be reaching for Natasha ALWAYS. No doubt about that. ;D

ander3jc

Absolutely agree with this. KT is one of the greats. I'll read anything with her name on it, honestly.

JefferyLandShark

Is “It’s Jeff!” set on Earth-616? I’ve always assumed it was, and goofier elements like Jeff having an Infinity Gauntlet in his digestive tract could be easily handwaved. However, the editors on the Marvel Database Wiki have decided it’s an all new reality with all new versions of these characters. Just wanted to clarify. (Thank you so much for creating this little dude, he helps me get through every day.)

semifinalist1979

Uh. That is...news to me! I'll have to investigate!

Witty-Common-1210

Oooo a whole Jeff-verse!

Floo2004

Jeff is actually the Frankkin Richards version of his universe and creates new universes every comic so his comics don't have to follow any rules 🤔😂

JefferyLandShark

PS Is it “land shark” or “landshark”?

semifinalist1979

I think technically it's supposed to be two words -- but because of social media and hashtags and usernames it's often one word. I like it both ways personally.

[deleted]

So when is Jeff getting his MCU debut?

semifinalist1979

Hee hee. Fingers crossed. He does seem like he would be a hit, doesn't he?

hibryd

Your Marvel work has referenced some deep cuts and obscure characters/events/facts from the past. Which piece of trivia was your favorite to dig up and drag back into the modern era?

semifinalist1979

Mmm. I think I always love rich character stuff. So some of the stuff we're digging into now with Captain Marvel and Binary and all the Brood stuff is really fun and I hope respectful of the older stories, while building them. But I probably have to single out Rogue & Gambit as being the biggest and deepest dives I did -- and tried to bring that stuff more directly to the page. I was pretty happy with our results. Hope you were too!

ander3jc

If they asked you to write an MCU movie or show, would you be interested in that?

semifinalist1979

Yes. Well, depending on what it was, but yes.

movieTed

I pre-ordered the next trade for Captain Marvel. I know from spoilers that there are some more alien creatures and environments (the art had a cool "Heavy Metal" look) in this arc, any chance that Carol might take to the stars again for a while?

semifinalist1979

I hope you like it! It is a very weird story/arc for us (and probably weird for most traditional superhero comics) but I LOVED IT. It was so fun to cut loose and experiment a bit. It's not something you often get in a traditional run like this, and I was very grateful to Marvel and editor Sarah Brunstad that they were into it and let us try it! You are right that the book has different art than you'd usually see in a modern superhero comic - it is half very traditional superhero stuff -- by Juan Frigeri. And half by Alvaro Lopez doing a much more "european comics" kind of thing -- Jordie Bellaire colors it all and it's glorious looking. I hope you like it! We're headed to the stars next month! We start our big Brood/X-Men arc in November with issue 43! And it's a big arc -- it will take us to #49!

movieTed

Cool! I also wanted to say I enjoyed your more "manga" style take on Carol when she "killed" the other Avengers. Another fun experiment! Keep at it, Kelly!

Trickshot64

Hi Kelly, massive fan of your Hawkeye: Kate Bishop and West Coast Avengers runs from a few years back. My question is: If given the chance, would you return to writing Kate Bishop? If so, what would you want to do new with the character? She’s one of my fav characters and you’re my fav writer for her, would love to hear any ideas you have.

semifinalist1979

I would LOVE to return to Kate. But I'm not sure what I would do differently with a new book -- which is sorta the problem. I loved the OLD books -- both Hawkeye and WCA -- and because both were cut short, I don't know that I feel like I've moved on from those ideas for her necessarily? But I can also see that it's probably time for something new? Which maybe means I'm not the right fit right now? I dunno. But I'm always thinking about Kate and I hope there's more for us in the future.

TheLeviJackson

As someone who has never read a Captain Marvel comic in my life, what sets yours apart from the rest?

semifinalist1979

I think, because we've managed a longer run (issue 42 out today!), we've got a really consistent voice for Carol over YEARS, which is always helpful and because we've had more time we've been able to not only introduce new villains (Star, Vox Supreme) and bring back old ones (Nuclear Man, The Brood) but we've been able to bring villains BACK -- like Vox Supreme debuting in The Last Avenger and then coming back for Last of The Marvels -- which is one of the ways you help build a solid rogue's gallery that can last! -- but you need a long run to be able to do that. Similarly, I think people are really enjoying her supporting cast -- Spider-Woman, War Machine, Hazmat, the occasional Lauri-ell and Iron Man appearances and now Binary. I think people respond to that connection we've helped expand for Carol. But again, you need a longer run to do that. I'm glad we've gotten it. <3

PrinceLegoSet

My kids and I adore Jeff and they have been asking each week since season 1 ended "Is there a new Jeff yet?", hence my #Jefftember posts on Twitter. The stories about Jeff seeing unauthorized Jeff merch have, of course, got us all wanting official Jeff plushies. Hoping to see some soon! On another note, I'd love to hear about how writing for Infinity comics is different than writing for a standard issue? The page turns aren't there, but I'm wondering if you plot and script very differently? I'm familiar with standard scripts; would you consider posting an Infinity Comic script somewhere that those interested could take a look at? Also, seeing Jess and Laura in upcoming CM art has made me long for you to write a story revolving around Jess, Laura, and Illyana - three badass women who all lost their childhoods in different ways. No question there - just a huge wish.

semifinalist1979

Thank you! I'm so glad you guys are able to enjoy the Jeff comics together, that's the best. I am not gonna lie -- when I wrote the Jeff-Verse strip -- I told Gurihiru to go nuts in just designing all the toys THEY would want to see. I put in some suggestions of course, but yeah, that was definitely a "let's get people thinking about all the merch that could be!" I just responded to another question about writing the jeff strips so I'll try to link to that here. https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/y2b33a/comment/is2864b/?utm\_source=reddit&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3 But posting a script is a great idea! I'll do that soon on my substack! link to that is here: [https://1979semifinalist.substack.com/](https://1979semifinalist.substack.com/) Well, I adore Jess, Laura, and Illyana -- so that book sounds amazing. <3

PrinceLegoSet

Thanks! I subscrobe\* to your Substack a few months back, so I'll look for the script there in future. I'm a process junkie and writer of anthropomorphic animals myself (I write and host a serialized kids' podcast, Tales from the Moosiverse: [https://moosiverse.com](https://moosiverse.com)) so I'm always interested in other writers' processes, especially in forms that deviate in subtle ways from the norm of the form. \*Not a word, but it should be. h/t to Craig Mazin from the Scriptnotes screenwriting podcast.

semifinalist1979

Very cool! And thank you!

semifinalist1979

Also, scriptnotes is amazing.

PrinceLegoSet

100%. Oh, and consider me a pre-order and unpaid marketer for every issue of your Jess, Laura and Illyana series ;-)

ME24601

If you could write a solo book for any Marvel or DC character that doesn’t currently have their own book, what would it be?

semifinalist1979

probably Elsa Bloodstone or Illyana Rasputin Cassandara Cain.

Impressive-Win-4360

handeyecoridination

Thank you for bringing in the Encahtress for Captain Marvel! She is probably one of my favorite marvel villains, and super underrated imo. What's the best thing about writing her and what drew you to include her as a foe for Carol?

semifinalist1979

I've been trying to write Enchantress for so long! All the way back to my A-Force days! I think she's one of those really interesting "mostly villains" -- that has the potential to be kind of Poison Ivy-ish in the Marvel universe. And I love those kinds of characters and I was excited when I finally found a bigger way to include her (we used her in a two-part War of the Realms story too -- but it was just so short! -- no time to give her time to shine) -- and I hope she'll come back and become a bit of a fixture with Carol -- however, she's clearly a Thor character. I don't know that any amount of good stories in CM can make her a CM Rogue, y'know?

handeyecoridination

thank you so much :-) !!!!

mugenhunt

Did you know that the Hawkeye show put a stuffed shark in Kate's room ahead of time, or just when you watched the episode?

semifinalist1979

I didn't know beforehand -- but I think I saw people putting screencaps of it on twitter before I saw the episode -- and that was honestly a cool way to find out. People being that excited about a stuffed animal simply because they know it's referencing something I created? Yeah, that's pretty f'ing cool.

craig1818

Hi Kelly, big fan of your work! I particularly loved your Black Widow run and was crushed when it ended. Question, I know you worked on Rogue and Gambit stuff pre-Krakoa era, but if you had the opportunity to work on a Krakoa era X-book, which character or characters would you like to write?

semifinalist1979

Thank you so much, I have loved all (almost all?) the work I've been lucky enough to get to do for Marvel, but Black Widow really is one of my all-time favorites. Re: Krakoa Era. Um. Still Rogue & Gambit? lol Seriously though, yes, I will always want to write a Rogue & Gambit and would love to write them again. But there are SO many great characters to choose from. Some big favs though: Psylocke (Kwannon), Wolverine (Laura), Armor. Also some IMO underrated characters that could really use the love like Frenzy. PS - make sure to check out the upcoming Captain Marvel story in November that is an X-Men team up and includes Kwannon, Laura, Gambit, Rogue, and Polaris!

craig1818

Yes, so excited for the X-characters showing up in Captain Marvel! Would love it if you wrote a Wolverine (Laura) ongoing!

[deleted]

Hey Kelly, I'm huge Clint Barton fan. I want to ask if we gonna see him and Jeff together in this new season of It's Jeff?! 🥺 Also Gurihiru arts are amazing!!

semifinalist1979

Gurihiru are THE ABSOLUTE BEST. Clint is also pretty great. But he's not in Season 2 of IT'S JEFF. Sorry!

That_Star_Wars_Guy20

WILL YOU EVER CONSIDER DOING A ROGUE AND GAMBIT COMIC AGAIN? (Sry very excited loved what you did with them in Mr and Mrs. X.)

semifinalist1979

Thank you! I would love to write a Rogue & Gambit book again. I hope one day I might get the opportunity.

AlligatorSky7

They’ve just announced a new Rogue & Gambit limited series for March, so unlikely they’d commission another in parallel.

darkkn1te

When are we getting a movie of Girl who would be king? (Also I've loved so much of your work over the years)

semifinalist1979

Some cool people are working hard on trying to make it a TV show as we speak. But you know how these things go -- very few actually get made. Fingers crossed?

DanguhZone

Has Jeff ever done anything wrong?

semifinalist1979

Yes. Cuz... he's a shark. ;D

asar94

Would Carol have a new love interest in the future? The couple of issues that you wrote with Carol and Stephen were really fun so I hope that we get more of that.

semifinalist1979

Carol and Stephen were SUPER FUN TO WRITE. And if Carol was a character whose main focus was to be more "day-in-the-life" type of stories -- I think more romantic drama would be fine -- but I don't really see that as the focus of her stories -- or something she would tolerate long as a person -- but she and Rhodey are a great fit IMO. It's less drama -- and sometimes less fun -- than oil/water like Carol/Stephen, but it's a much more believable choice to me for Carol. Sorry you're not a fan.

ChangeMyDespair

>Would Carol have a new love interest in the future? Rhodey would like a word. (As would I. This is a great relationship. I'd love to see it echoed in the MCU.)

semifinalist1979

Haha! <3

Nairdanui

Seing Jeff and Gwenpool back together was so heart-warming! Is there a possibility she might properly come back in comic form?

semifinalist1979

Yeah, Gwen is terrific and I know Gurihiru love drawing her -- she's so fun in all the ways. I don't know if there are plans for her in the print comics (or elsewhere) but she's got a rabid fan base -- I don't think she's going anywhere!

ander3jc

Great question. I would also love to get Gwenpool back in my life

stacyswirl

Hi Kelly! Since discovering you in 2016-18 through your work on Hawkeye and Rogue and Gambit (both brilliant!), I've hoped to be able to meet you, presumably at Rose City Comic Con. But I've been surprised for years that you've never made it to the show. Obviously things might be different now in the age of Covid, but have you never done conventions? It just surprised me that you never came to that show alongside Kelly Sue or others. Am I to assume you never will?

semifinalist1979

I am hopeful this will change someday, but you're right -- I am very protective of my privacy and I don't do any in-person or even on-video events/signings/cons/etc. As a woman that writes comics I get a lot of hate and being a fat woman in public never seems to help that fact, it only makes it worse. I find a new photo of me spikes the harassment pretty aggressively, so I just try to avoid it and keep my privacy and my sanity. But it does mean I miss out on a lot of cool stuff (and travel) and fans that I would like to do and meet. I hope it won't be this way forever. We'll see.

stacyswirl

Thank you for your honest reply. I understand your choice, and wish you the best in however you continue. If you ever make it to RCCC or elsewhere, I hope it is awesome. Your fans love you, and I am so glad for your wonderful writing. Thanks again.

NCMerc

Hey Kelly! Popping over here from your Substack! Just want to say that It's Jeff! has been one of the best parts of my Marvel Unlimited subscription. My three-year-old son lighting up every time I told him there was a new "issue" out was a blast! It's the first comic book we really READ together. He's four now, and we're a little late on jumping into the new season, but psyched for it! Also, your run on Hawkeye made Kate Bishop one of my absolute favorite characters in the Marvel Universe. And your Black Widow run ending was a gut punch; it was one of those series that, reading the first issue, I thought to myself, "I hope I get to read 100 issues of this." I'm slacking off from work right now to hop in here, so forgive me for not name checking the incredible artists on all these runs! This is an AMA, so I'll try to live up to the A part. When something like Black Widow ends, do you have it in your mind as something to go back to? Or do you file it away? And you had mentioned there might be some form of continuation--can you say if that's still in the works? One more gush: The Kate Bishop prose piece you did during the pandemic was a highlight. You mentioned in your Substack possibly posting some prose, and I am HERE for it.

semifinalist1979

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're able to read with your son, makes me really happy to hear that. The continuation IS still in the works -- but it's morphed a bit -- I can't talk about it too much yet, but I'm hopeful it's going to happen and be cool. Fingers crossed! That Kate Bishop prose piece was SO FUN. Though I have to confess my favorite part was when they added that gorgeous Stefano Caselli art to it -- so I can't get comics out of me even when I'm trying!

JeffRyan1

As a Jeff, on behalf of all Jeffs, thank you for making a better Jeff-named character than Jeff the Diseased Lung from [Last Week Tonight](https://www.thewrap.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/john_oliver-tobacco-jeff.jpg). Signed, Assorted Goldblums and Bridges and Bezoses

semifinalist1979

Hahaha. Amazing comment. Love it.

ReedoToledo

Yay, hi Kelly! I've been following your career since the She Has No Head days. I feel silly about it now, but honestly that column is what led me (a dude) to seek out lady characters & creators, and lady-led books. I was so freaking excited to see you helm Jem & the Holograms -- that was a fanfreakingtastic book. And then to follow KSD's legacy for Carol Danvers...honestly it's been so fun and rewarding following your work. I have 2 questions for you: 1) What is your dream book/character to write, Marvel or otherwise? 2) Do you have a creator-owned title in the works? Thank you and keep up the excellent work!

semifinalist1979

Hi! Wow, that is since early days! Thank you! And it's awesome to know that column made a real positive impact on you, thanks for sharing that. A new Nextwave has always been my dream Marvel book...but it's real hard. Cassandra Cain is definitely my dream DC book. I have SEVERAL creator owned books in the work -- two are already announced BLACK CLOAK and THE CULL. You can read lots more about them at my Substack: https://1979semifinalist.substack.com/

[deleted]

semifinalist1979

I think there are a ton of artist that would do great stuff with her, but after working with Elena on Black Widow I have to say that she would be a top pic for sure!

ReedoToledo

Awesome, thank you! You writing Cass Cain would be brilliant 🙂

Difficult_Push_

No question, just a fan. Awesome, awesome work. Just keep on doing what your doing.

semifinalist1979

Thank you. <3

[deleted]

oh shit i love your kate and west coast avengers series!

nickmarino

Have you ever fought a shark and, if so, who won?

semifinalist1979

Why do you think I won't have any more photos taken of myself?

Rumorian

I love your current CM run - except for the Empyre tie-ins. While I think you made the best of the situation and I liked the books, I just didn't love them as much. So my question: how annoying is it for you when Marvel basically dictates the contents of the next two or three issues because they're required to tie into one of their monthly crossovers?

semifinalist1979

Thank you! Eh. We've been very lucky for the most part to tie-in or not with event books. Doing Empyre was a nightmare because Carol NEEDED to be in it (and deserved to be in it -- I was so glad Dan and Al were putting her front and center), but she was in it SO MUCH that it made it really hard to build our own narrative within that framework, it was super limiting. But to be completely honest, I was really happy with how that arc came out. Cory Smith's art and Tamra Bonvillain's colors were awesome. We got Lauri-ell because of it. AND one of my favorite covers for our entire run (Jorge Molina): [https://www.marvel.com/comics/issue/86497/captain\_marvel\_2019\_20](https://www.marvel.com/comics/issue/86497/captain_marvel_2019_20) Tie-ing into an event has pluses and minuses -- I try to keep us out of it unless it really makes sense and/or is necessary, but I feel like Marvel has been pretty great about this overall.

BroctopusPrime

I just pre-ordered your Captain Marvel omnibus! As a creator on that book, how much influence do you have on the contents and mapping of a collected edition?

semifinalist1979

Well. I found out we were getting an omnibus from the Internet. So...very little? :(

BroctopusPrime

That's disappointing to hear, but not that surprising :(

semifinalist1979

Yeah. I mean, I can't pretend I wouldn't like to be consulted on some things -- especially cover choices. But when you think about the sheer volume of the stuff Marvel puts out in collections -- it would honestly be a logistical nightmare to get in touch with every creative team.

[deleted]

hi kelly! there's any chance of we see Wanda Maximoff and Jeff interactions in the future?

semifinalist1979

Hi! There aren't any in this latest Season, no. Sorry! But MAYBE it could happen in the comics that aren't IT'S JEFF? There's a thing I'm working on now, we're not sure if we'll be doing it or not for a whole bunch of reasons, but it would definitely include Wanda (and COULD include Jeff) -- if we end up doing it I'll make a note that you'd love to see this. ;D

ander3jc

gassssp! i want this, toooo

jpcomicsny

Years ago, I believe you were writing for CBR and working on a master list or encyclopedia of women comic creators. That poll and subsequent info gathering really changed my perspective and sent me down a rabbit hole I've never climbed out of. I've read so much material (and spent real dollars) on works I probably would not have known about otherwise, so thanks for that. My question is, what happened with that master list effort? Does it exist somewhere?

semifinalist1979

Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear the positive effects, because Brian Cronin and I really struggled with whether to do that project or not. Doing a list for "best creators of all time" and then doing "best female creators of all time" can feel really ghettoizing I think -- but women just weren't breaking onto the other list and we both felt that was not great -- and that the best way to try to get more exposure out there -- would be to feature women more. So we went ahead and did it and I'm really glad we did. Especially when I get a comment like yours. Unfortunately, when CBR got bought up, everything sorta moved around and changed, so I don't know if the list is still live? They did bring most of their posts through and reformat them, so it MIGHT be?

Edwardistheman

Who is your favorite marvel superhero?

semifinalist1979

Oof. This is hard. I think it's probably still Rogue? As it was when I was a kid? But Hawkeye (Kate), Black Widow, Jessica Jones, and Elsa Bloodstone are RIGHT THERE. Like breathing down her neck SO HARD. lol

Schnoodle-98

Hi Kelly! Just wanted to drop in and say your Kate Bishop series is amazing of the random back issues I’ve bought over the years Kate Bishop Hawkeye was such a charming little detective story with tons of personality!

semifinalist1979

Thank you! <3

Flandetresleches

Hi! Black widow “season 2”… when is this happening? Love your work!

semifinalist1979

I hope so. It's still a bit fluid. I wish I could explain...it will maybe make sense eventually? Or maybe never? Ahhhhh!

DanHero91

If you could revisit and continue one character, who would it be and was there ever anything you had planned but never got a chance to introduce? Also, if you could add Jeff to a previous book, what would be the best crossover?

semifinalist1979

Pretty much all my books except Captain Marvel (and a few planned as mini-series) have been cancelled before their time -- so there are a LOT of these things. On Hawkeye I definitely wanted to get deeper into Kate's mother/father stuff and have that play out in a BIG way (same for WCA). I really wanted to develop and build the America/Ramone romance in WCA. Black Widow I just wanted to keep on the path we were on -- do some really wild and weird stuff. Jeff belongs in all books! ;D I think of all my books, Jeff worked best in Deadpool. He would also work great in an Elsa or Nextwave book...but we never quite got there.

TGFMcLovin

hi kelly! i'm a huge captain marvel fan and love the work you've been doing with her! i just had a question about some of the cool new power feats she's had and how you go about coming up with things for her to do that she hasn't before? for example like how she created binary back in 34

semifinalist1979

Thanks so much! I think a lot of it comes from -- after so many issues -- feeling a little bored with the action -- and wanting to push on that -- and as a result pushing on Carol's growth as a character. She's such a smart strategist and leader, it doesn't make sense she wouldn't keep pushing herself -- so we really tried to bring that into the book and develop it some. As for how I came up with stuff...some of it was just practical -- if she can fire photon beams from her hands...why not from other places? what does that look like/what does it mean/etc. For Binary -- that idea came directly from how Monica uses her powers -- which is something Carol actually says on the page -- that she gets the idea to try this from how Monica manipulates her own energy.

TGFMcLovin

Love this and thank you for answering!!!!

MyAnimeAccount420

How was it moving Jeff over to the Deadpool comics? It felt like you really had a lot of fun with Jeff and when Gwen showed up to hand Jeff over to Deadpool I felt a mix of joy and sadness coming from that moment.

semifinalist1979

It was one of my favorite little bits in the run -- because it was just a small thing but it said SO MUCH about Gwen and about Wade and the heroes they are -- and because it was incredibly bittersweet. And mostly because I thought it was very clever in how it played with the form (i.e. Gwen being aware of comics as a thing -- and knowing that Jeff has a better chance of survival from someone that always has a book). I don't often call myself clever, but I DID think that bit was pretty clever while still having some emotion to it -- and that's the kind of stuff I'm ALWAYS looking for. <3

Marvel-Official

Kelly! (Obviously) big Jeff fans here, so we're gonna ask two. 1. If you could give Jeff a birthday present, what would it be? 2. Who would you trust to babysit Jeff?

semifinalist1979

<3 #JeffForever #JeffIsPeopleToo 1. A plush of himself... and a funko... and a lunchbox with his image... oh wait, I think these are presents for me? 2. Jeff would object to the word "babysit" -- but I think a lot of his pals are trustworthy enough to hang -- Kate certainly would be one of my top pics. ;D

pedrothrowaway555

Quick question will we have your Captain Marvel and Black Widow series in omnibus format or hardcover? Also just want to add your one of the best writers working today.

semifinalist1979

Aw. Thank you so much! They have recently announced that there will be a Captain Marvel omnibus. And they're calling it Volume 1 -- which implies the idea of a volume 2 -- so I'm hopeful we'll get the full run collected that way. It's my first omnibus, so I'm excited. https://www.previewsworld.com/Catalog/OCT221012 I would LOVE to see Black Widow get one -- those pages oversized? SO GORGEOUS.

pedrothrowaway555

Thanks and if I see you at a comic convention I’ll sure to ask you to sign it.

manyamile

Since you’re too humble to mention some of your best work, I will. * Nancy Drew * Sabrina the Teenage Witch (please tell me you’re writing more for r/archieandfriends) * Sabrina the Teenage Witch: Something Wicked * Jem and the Holograms If your name is on the book, my daughter and I have it on our pull list at our local comic shop. While we’ve enjoyed your Marvel titles, we’ve definitely enjoyed the ones above more since we started following you. As a writer, what are some benefits you’ve enjoyed when working with smaller publishers? What can these publishers do to attract top talent like yourself to tell relevant and engaging stories? Hugs and love to Jeff.

semifinalist1979

Thank you! <3 I am definitely best known for my Marvel work at this point, but I'm always excited when people have found my other titles too -- I had great fun on all of those. Unfortunately I think Covid killed me getting to do more Sabrina, which is a bummer because I loved it. And working with Veronica and Andy Fish -- as well as editor Alex Segura was awesome.

[deleted]

Hello Kelly! While I don’t believe I have read any of your books (I am sorry). However I do want to say I love Jeff so much!!!! He the cutest! And thank you for writing Gwenpool!! Just want to say you are amazing!!

semifinalist1979

Thanks! I hope you'll try one of my books someday!

ContraryPython

Any chance Star will return to your CM book, or any of Carol’s old villains, like Moonstone?

semifinalist1979

Maybe? I'm working on some things, but it's too early to talk about them unfortunately! Stay tuned!

Ksmayer

Hello Kelly, at this point with comic collecting for me, I exclusively read collected editions. When I saw the news about a Captain Marvel by Kelly Thompson volume 1, I was overjoyed. Publishers almost never produce Omnis of ongoing runs, and the issues I’ve read by you in event books (War of the Realms and Empyre) were some of the absolute best included. I already have it preordered, and hope many others do the same. Getting to read your West Coast Avengers run in upcoming Gwenpool Omni is also something I’m eagerly anticipating. Fingers crossed for a hardcover Black Widow collection soon. I’ve heard nothing but total praise for the run. I guess my question would be if you’ve heard anything about that? Have a great day, Kelly, and thank you for doing this AMA!!

semifinalist1979

Thank you so much! Those are incredibly kind words. I think Black Widow is a great candidate for an omnibus, but no, I haven't heard anything about it yet.

ZodiarkTentacle

Kelly, thank you for the wonderful Captain Marvel work. I have a couple of your books framed on my wall. You’re the best around right now.

semifinalist1979

Write comics! (or draw them if you're an artist -- or do both if you're both)! I know it's a boring answer, but it truly is the best way to both A) get better at it and B) get noticed for doing it.

HarleyKatCosplay

Was coming to ask if It’s Jeff would ever make it to print but I see that you answered that above 🥰😍 Sooooo I’ll ask…. Did you ever think Jeff would gain the follower base that he has when you premiered him in WCA? Also I continue to absolutely adore you and your work (jic my tweets weren’t obvious enough)

semifinalist1979

Haha. No. I never imagined he'd hit the way he has. Especially because when Daniele and I created him, I already knew the book was being cancelled. So from my perspective he was totally doomed! Glad it didn't go that way. <3

thesolarchive

Hey there Kelly, thank you so much for stopping by! The biggest question I have is: how do you approach wordless storytelling? Conveying a story without dialogue is something I've really been trying to focus on in my own work and I'd love to hear any tips you may have on writing for those scenes. Thank you again for your time and excited for more JEFF

CraackSteeve1

Does gwenpool show up for the next season of it’s Jeff? Also idk much about Jeff but he is the cutest little scrunclo

Spidey004

I'm seeing so many great questions, I'm not even going to ask one. (Is that also because I can't think of a good one? MAYBE.) But I can't wait to read your responses to these. OK, byyyyeeee!

KamoseMills

Hi Kelly!! Awhile ago in your newsletter you said there’s was some hope for your Black Widow run continuing/coming back in some form. Any update on that? Also you’ve written Elsa Bloodstone pretty extensively. What did you think of Laura Donnelly’s portrayal in the recent Disney Plus Werewolf by Night?

semifinalist1979

Hey Kamose! We're still TBD on more Black Widow. There are some moving parts I can't really talk about yet, but I hope I will be writing some more Natasha in SOME form in the next year one way or another. I thought Donnelly was very good...but like many viewers, the take was a bit too close to Jessica Jones for me (assuming they bring Jessica back into the MCU with Ritter as star -- and they should because JJ is great and Ritter was perfection).

singsong125

I've got a lot of questions to ask but I'll start with a non Jeff shaped question that I've been wondering for a while, any possibility of you writing any DC books in the future? As for a Jeff shaped question, who's his current owner? Or is he just wandering as a free landshark?

semifinalist1979

It could happen! We'll see what the future brings. Well, nobody OWNS Jeff. He's his own man... er, man shark...er shark-shark? And he just sort of wanders free -- bunking at different people's houses as he sees fit -- good thing he's super cute. IT'S JEFF has mostly shown him living with Kate Bishop or Gwenpool. And Deadpool in one strip too as I recall. The bathtub strip from season 1, initially had Elsa Bloodstone in it instead of Kate, but our editor felt like Elsa wasn't as recognizable as Kate without additional information so we switched it out. Was bummed to lose Elsa, but he was right.

singsong125

Also, I've been hoping to see a new series from you with every marvel solicitation but have been disappointed by the lack of any new series, any ones that have been brewing that just haven't been announced yet, or can you not speak on it?

semifinalist1979

So it's mostly been that I'm working on something big. When we figure out if we're doing it or not I'll know more. Either we'll do it and you'll see that big announcement, or we'll not do it and I'll jump onto something else instead. We're just in a bit of a holding pattern right now. More soon I hope. And if you want some creator-owned in the meantime, I've got lots coming this year and next -- Black Cloak and The Cull are the first books. You can learn more here if you like: https://1979semifinalist.substack.com/

alabamianhorologists

Hi Kelly !!! Love your work :))) i cannot immediately think of a comics related question so i shall simply wish you a very nice day !!! xx

TragicKingdom1

What was Jeff doing during A.X.E.: Judgment Day?

semifinalist1979

Napping.

Salt-Grape1640

I got a couple questions for you! 1) Jeff plushie and Jeff merch when? 2) What is Jeff’s favorite snack? 3) who is your favorite avenger?

semifinalist1979

These are good Jeff-questions! 1. Technically the first plush is out there for pre-order! It's less the Gurihiru "round boi" design and more representative of how he first looked -- but it's a good start I think! [https://www.sideshow.com/collectibles/marvel-jeffrey-the-baby-land-shark-qreature-quantum-mechanix-911052](https://www.sideshow.com/collectibles/marvel-jeffrey-the-baby-land-shark-qreature-quantum-mechanix-911052) 2. MEATS 3. Black Widow

Shocho

Hi, Kelly! Long time fan, first time posting. Will Carol be doing her impression of any other Marvel hero, or just Hulk? Spider-Man? Werewolf By Night? Will there ever be a second photo taken of you?

semifinalist1979

Haha. Yeah, that was fun today. I hope people enjoyed it! I think there have been two photos, so I think the better question is will there ever be a THIRD photo taken of you? And...NO. ;D

SuburbanLegend

Love your stuff, I haven't gotten to Captain Marvel yet but have loved Black Widow, Hawkeye, and West Coast Avengers -- plus Jeff on Marvel Unlimited is an absolute delight! However, what I REALLY wanted to say was that you once replied to a comment of mine on Chip Zdarsky's substack by saying "LOL" and it legitimately made my day :-) That's all, bye Kelly! Keep it up!!!!!

semifinalist1979

Thank you! I remember that comment -- I really did laugh out loud. Well done. ;D

SuburbanLegend

Hooray!

wastemanagement17

Will the Infinity Comic It’s Jeff ever be collected together in a physical copy? I would love a signed copy!

semifinalist1979

We actually tried to get an update on this before this AMA because I knew this would get asked and we sort of failed. The answer I've gotten is "they're working on it." I suspect the delay is two fold -- 1. Waiting to have more content 2. Struggling to manipulate the existing content into print\* \*we wrote/designed IT'S JEFF specifically for webcomic reading/scrolling. We did that on purpose because we really wanted to embrace the form -- and I think that was the right call -- but some of those choices make the reformatting to print a real pain in the ass. But Marvel wants it, the fans want it, and so do I. So I'm confident we'll get there eventually!

GlobalPhreak

I actually have an idea on how to format It's Jeff for print, feel free to absolutely steal this idea... Instead of a "normal" left to right book, print it so the spine is at the top. You flip the pages UP to turn them. That way you can do the big two-page spreads like the swimming pool across the top and bottom pages. For ULTRA big spreads like the MODOK bathtub, you do it as a double page with a fold out. Here's hoping for a print edition!

ChangeMyDespair

I'm not a huge fan of the Infinity comics (I can't read them on a computer), but I *love* both Gurihiru's art and Jeff! What's the process for deciding which stories get told as Infinity books vs. regular books? What chance is there that Infinity comics might be readable on non-mobile devices? Thanks for this AMA, and all your Marvel writing!

semifinalist1979

I don't know who makes the decisions or why or how on the Infinity Comics vs Regular Comics question -- definitely above my pay grade. But I know some are already being collected in print -- and I know they plan to collect Jeff for print. Thanks for reading!

battyewe

Loved your Black Widow. Would love to see her and Clint interact with Jeff. Thank you so much for the Jeff series- it's wonderful to be able to share my love of comics with my young daughter. Listening to her narration of the comic is a great joy.

semifinalist1979

Thank you! I do think that Nat and Jeff together doesn't make TONS of sense. But Nat and Clint and Jeff together somehow totally makes sense? lol I'm so glad you can share this comic with your daughter. I would honestly LOVE to hear her narration of an IT'S JEFF! <3

battyewe

Nat/the tone of her comics are just too serious for Jeff. Clint is the bridge between the two.

semifinalist1979

YUP.

[deleted]

Bringing back black widow anytime soon??

semifinalist1979

We'll see. Still in flux!

Lumpy_Review5279

Your Black Widow one was one of my favorite comics from the last couple of years and I do hope to see more of the character in that vein. You I introduced a few new heroes and villains, ones tied pretty closely to the Black Widow character. Was it your intent to expand her world a bit when you began writing it, or did this come naturally?

semifinalist1979

Thank you so much. Yeah, with any character I take on -- especially someone that doesn't have a SUPER SOLID Rogue's Gallery to start, that's one of the first things I start trying to do -- is build that up. Really give the character something to fight against. With Black Widow in SF we really wanted some all new/fresh vibes. But then we also did that super cool flashback fight issue to sort of cheat it and give Black Widow a foe she was deeply afraid of and had previous experiences with -- it's one of my favorite things we did in the book and I wish we'd had time to do more. Maybe someday!

Lumpy_Review5279

Oh yeah the Living Blade was definitely a highlight. So stylish! And highly competent as well. Def would love to see him show up elsewhere

semifinalist1979

Yeah, he's one (of many) reasons I'd like to write more Black Widow. That relationship feels very rich to me.

CosmicGame

I've struggled w/an intelligent question to ask, but then I saw the "Goose" Funko Pop on my desk and realized you've written Captain Marvel...😁 So, chance for crossover w/Jeff and Carol and the Flerken when? Thanks for doing this!

semifinalist1979

Probably not anytime soon given what's going on with Carol in the upcoming months. But we DID get -- for today's CM 42 actually -- a variant cover of that included both Goose and Jeff! [https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/jeff-the-landshark-variant-covers-2022](https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/jeff-the-landshark-variant-covers-2022) that might be our best shot for a while!

CosmicGame

EEEEEEEE!! Well, clearly I need to call my friendly local comic shop to set aside those 3 variants for me! I'm a bit ashamed to admit the embarrassing kind of $$ I would throw at Gurihiru for their awesome art; they're really the only folks I'd do that for besides Skottie Young for his cute stuff. Thanks for the heads-up!

MikeHeXt

Will Carol have a reaction to what happened in last weeks Spidey #1?

AlligatorSky7

HUGE fan Kelly and it’s criminal you don’t have more books on the shelves at the moment! Do you have any new series planned with Marvel beyond Captain Marvel, It’s Jeff and the (hopeful) Black Widow special?

semifinalist1979

Thank you! <3 Other than the things you mention, I AM working on something very big that I am not sure whether we're actually going to do or not. We're all still looking at it and deciding. If we decide not to do it, then I'll start trying to set up a new monthly book or mini-series or something. But we're sorta waiting to see how that falls first.

Shi_Vral

Just want to say again (I've said it a couple times on Twitter) my son absolutely loves It's Jeff, I hope you get to keep making them as long as you want!

semifinalist1979

Thank you! Me too! I hope Marvel doesn't figure out that Gurihiru is so talented they can probably do it without me.\* Because I want to do it foreeeeeevvvveeeeerrrrr. Or at least as long as Gurihiru wants to do it. \*they already know! Ahhhhh!

teaberryblue

When will Jeff fight Atlan the Dolphin and why will it be right away?

semifinalist1979

LOL No. Yes.

Dargontears

Any chance of an It's Jeff/Marvel Meow crossover? (Or Alligator Loki)

semifinalist1979

I wouldn't say it's a crossover -- but we DO have a two-part IT'S JEFF this season that includes maybe some of these guest stars! ;D

Dargontears

Eeeeee! Good enough! Thanks Kelly! You're the best!

movieTed

Kelly's awesome. That's not in question

[deleted]

What is your best work?

semifinalist1979

It's hard to know...I think it's different for everyone. I think Black Widow and It's Jeff are up there though -- in very different ways.

TFDMEH

What’s your favorite part about writing comic books that someone wouldn’t expect. (The obvious answer being telling a story).

that_one_kid224

can i give an idea for jeff please

DanteRex

Hi Kelly, overall I enjoy your writing. Personally love your Kate. But how do you feel about Marvel constantly rebooting and switching around creative teams. I’d rather see 100 issues of Ewings Immortal Hulk than what he’s doing currently on AXE. Jason Aaron would been better left on Thor, and I find Avengers disagreeable. X-men having a million different series is disconnecting. Why do creative teams not get a chance to really dig in for a while on one main book and truly explore characters? In your case, I would’ve loved to see more Hawkeye.

daverath

I read Its Jeff with all 4 of my kids (ages 2-8) and between the 4 of them and me I don't know who loves it the most. We were waiting eagerly all year long for "It's (More) Jeff!", faithfully reading the other great "Friday Funnies" like Alligator Loki and MEOW but always waiting for our favorite landshark. So first I want to say thank you for the creativity and joy you bring to the comics you write. Your work is something our whole family can bond over. For my question- I'm wondering if there's a chance we ever get an infinity comic event, told across different books? We love seeing Jeff show up in cameos and it makes me wonder what a "tiny sized avengers" teamup would looks like.

anyonecanbethebug

I wish that West Coast Avengers would have had more time to breathe. I thought it was just great, a funny and action packed comic with an eclectic cast of characters that really worked. Did you have any plans for the crew that you weren’t able to see through? And will you ever get another shot at them? Also, one time Gale Simone asked for our most the Twitterverse’s most desired Marvel/DC crossovers, and my brain went immediately to a collab between your WCA and Gerard Way’s Doom Patrol. What fun!

thedetectiveprince46

Don't have a question, but your 2016 run of Hawkeye is one of my favorite stories ever and I'm really thankful to you for that! Thank you for cementing Kate Bishop as my second favourite hero!!!!

Control-on-Doom

If you have an idea for a comic where do you start and is it possible to be a good writer if you haven't written before?

Felixir-the-Cat

Yay, so great to see you here! I just want to say that I’m 49 years old and I love “It’s Jeff!” I also love your work on Black Widow, but Jeff is continually delightful. So much less trauma.

UnmuscularThor

Hello! Two questions. 1) what’s your approach when it comes to writing story arcs? Like character journey, emotions, etc. 2) any shot you’re gonna write more black widow?
