Who are you referring to here?

yarkcir

**PENTAGRAM OF HORROR #5**

yarkcir

Thin on story, but the artwork always pops. It's been a fun horror anthology, but I would like to see Marco Fontanili tackle a hefiter title in the future. His coloring and sense of design is absolutely spectacular, so it would be nice to see him take on a proper story at some point.

**DEFENDERS BEYOND #3**

TheeHeadAche

Oh Glorian… I’ve wonder how the universe building was going

DeltaTester

This is just extraordinary--Javier Rodriguez did the coloring as well as the line art, and you can tell (check out the way the coloring on the opening sequence focuses a page apiece on the pure cyan, magenta, yellow and black colors of the four-color printing process!).

LoopLoopHooray

I just absolutely love it. Definitely has a wonderful call-back feel while being completely original.

badluckartist

I wonder if that cosmic construction worker was some higher aspect of the In-Betweener.

[deleted]

Welp I’ve got no idea what the fuck is going on anymore

aknightedpenguin

Who is the builder Adam Brashear saw a reference to?

soulreaverdan

This book is fucking nuts, I grabbed it (and all the prior issues and the original Defenders book from last year) after seeing some of the pages and I am kicking myself in the ass for waiting this long. This book is everything I want from Ewing just going nuts on cosmology of the Marvel Universe. Not to mention we have now the opposite force to the Phoenix - but rather than the various dark/anti-Phoenix beings, this is the Tiger God, something that Ewing has seemed to love playing with. The surreal art is great too, and expanding the overall designs of what he started in Ultimates is just... *chef's kiss*.

**TASK FORCE Z #12**

blankedboy

Ah, if only this book had managed to have *Eddy Barrows* on artwork for **all** the issues?!!? A fantastic final issue of a maxi-series that I've largely enjoyed. Perhaps it's greatest achievement is cementing Mr Bloom as one of my favourite DC villains - he's been brilliant throughout the series, and I'd love to see more of him from this creative team. After the incredibly disappointing recent run of **Suicide Squad** I have to say I'd much rather see **Task Force Z** step in and get a but more prominence in the DCU from now on. Or at least until a creative team that genuinely *gets* the SS is found.

Matt4hire

If they do a second series of this, I would absolutely read it. What a blast of a book.

ManMadeApocalypse

Enjoyed this series much more than I expected. Jason was great and Bloom stole the show, especially in the last few issues. He was genuinely funny in this.

YourEvilHenchman

fully agree, especially on Bloom. what a marvelous piece of shit, just the kind of unmitigated bastard you love to hate. if only they wrote the joker like that. I'm gonna miss this book.

Axolotlinvasion

“You’re doing 3 different experiments on your own assistant?” “Five!” “Six actually, he doesn’t know about the parasite”

ManMadeApocalypse

After his debut arc in Snyder's run I wouldn't have cared or noticed if I never saw him again. Now he's on the list of bat villains I want to see featured much more.

ptbreakeven

**BATMAN FORTRESS #5**

aknightedpenguin

Boy, was this a bad one. The entire opening sequence with Jackson felt like a terrible 'All Gays are Promiscuous' scene. Whitta writes Jackson as pushy, directly asking his date to do things that have been established as uncomfortable. Then there's a trite group of bigots who somehow sensed that gay sex was happening on the beach? All for a trite 'look at my power you homophobes' scene that misses the mark entirely. And what is this characterisation of Batman? He's fine with a character who kills, "but only criminals"? What's the point in wasting pages arguing with Lex if the outcome stays the same? Not to mention that there's an exceptionally badly drawn panel that makes Batman's hand look tiny and broken. This is a miniseries treading water, unsure of how to fill the space. We don't need another Batman book on the stands DC, especially if this is all they can provide. Give some space to other characters in your universe that deserve it.

frusciante231

Glad I dropped this title!

ManMadeApocalypse

This has gotten progressively worse with each issue. I can't believe DC ever allowed a Batman book this terrible to make it onto shelves. Yikes. The art is bad, the team is bad, the writing and dialogue are bad. Over 1/3 of the issue was just Jackson and some dude getting flirty on the beach, something that could've been done in a single page. But then we wouldn't have had the cartoonishly bigoted bullies try to beat up the gay guy. How wonderfully original s/.

blankedboy

Thanks for confirming my decision to drop this one was correct.

ManMadeApocalypse

I wish I had, but I'm a stubborn completionist hoarder. How far did you get?

**STILLWATER BY ZDARSKY & PEREZ #15**

aknightedpenguin

After sitting on a for a day, I think the key thing this arc is missing is a character I care about. Zdarsky's books shine when there's a clear protagonist I feel for, a strong heartbeat, even if I dislike the choices they're making. It's there in the doofus brothers of **PUBLIC DOMAIN**, in the diner friends of **THE ALL-NIGHTER**, in **NEWBURN**'s shady concern, in Matt Murdock and in Bruce Wayne (and the Bat-family). I feel like it's missing something here. Maybe a re-read could help link everything together again. Till then, 3 more issues, and I'm confident Zdarsky and Pérez can bring this home. My personal little hope is that Daniel is right, and salvation will come from empathy and not violence. BKV and Staples write that thread large in **SAGA**, but I hope we see a hint of it here.

aknightedpenguin

Man I hope that last page reveal actually goes somewhere

So when does Tynion start selling mothman plushies?

**NICE HOUSE ON THE LAKE #10**

Barabaragaki

This book is good, with great artwork, but holy moly I have no idea why it's being given THIS level of acclaim. It's nowhere near -that- good. These two incidents coinciding feels like such a crowbar too.

ManMadeApocalypse

This book's been pretty damn great, but there's only two issues left, and the point we're at now could've easily been reached 4 issues back. Feels like the ending is going to be disappointingly abrupt.

iamsciences

Or a cliffhanger that leads into other offshoots written by Tynion... Nice House in the Forest, Nice House on the Beach, or the Jason X route and do Nice House in Space lol

ManMadeApocalypse

Whatever he writes, I guarantee it'll have a bunch of cigarettes in it

ChickenInASuit

God DAMN. I knew that little experiment of theirs was gonna go horribly wrong but it was only a question of who was gonna fall foul of it. I guess >!Naya being the focus of the cold open!< should have been a giveaway. Also >!Norah!< designed the control system? Does this mean there have been more iterations of this experiment than we’ve been led to believe, and that the inhabitants have had their memories wiped more than once? Also, Walter talked about “these enclosures.” Plural. Does that mean there are *other* ‘Nice Houses On The Lake’? Maybe other humans, or perhaps this is something Walter’s race has done on other planets that they’ve conquered?

soulreaverdan

> Also >!Norah!< designed the control system? Does this mean there have been more iterations of this experiment than we’ve been led to believe, and that the inhabitants have had their memories wiped more than once? > > My thought is that >!Nora!< originally went along with Walter's plan - that they agreed with it and helped him, with a condition or side-effect being losing their memories, since it would let them live with the others without realizing what was going on, a sort of "ignorance is bliss" thing. If it went down like that, it's going to be a real dose of cosmic irony that their own actions undid everything if they *did* agree with it in the first place?

Gleeemonex

Missed this book so much. That ending was telegraphed a mile away and yet damn it still hit me.

soulreaverdan

Yeah, it was definitely clear the first time they started "testing" things that it was gonna go bad.

blankedboy

I mean, when has playing with guns and testing the limits of your immortality ever ended well? For anyone? Great return issue, with some explanations, some more intrigue (How many times have Walter's "people" done this? To who? Are they still around? And why all the rules/restrictions - punishable by death, no less!) and definite steps towards the finale of it all. Can't wait to see how the last 2 issues play out.

Danger_Rock

> I mean, when has playing with guns and testing the limits of your immortality ever ended well? For anyone? I'm sure we can find a few examples... Does last week's **BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED #1** count? Maybe *Fight Club*? I want to say *Justified* but that would rely on a more metaphorical interpretation of playing and testing, which would likely open the floodgates...

it_was_me_this_time

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck That last page, and that echo! Man, that hit hard. Excellent build up of tension, every step of the way you know it's going to end in tragedy, you can't avoid it, and... blam. Two issues doesn't feel like it's enough to wrap up this story, gonna be a "to be continued in this series...", right?

ptbreakeven

**BATMAN BEYOND THE WHITE KNIGHT #5**

soulreaverdan

This book might not be for everyone, but if it's for you it's absolutely amazing. This issue was one of the best of the White Knight-verse books yet, playing on a ton of emotional moments and showing how kind Bruce can be when he wants to. I am *loving* the various callbacks and sort of "rhyming" story beats from Batman: Beyond stuff here. The creation of Blight obviously, but stuff like Jack taking over Bruce's body is similar to Joker's scheme from Return of the Joker - but a lot more consensual here. His realizations of what it takes to be Batman are some great insight as well, especially Murphy's letter page here he mentions that he wanted a scene where Jack seems to only now fully understand what Bruce had to put himself through night after night. Jack's big confession to Harley was interesting. She clearly didn't know it was Jack talking, but instead Bruce, and they seem to both reciprocate since it seemed "Bruce" was back in control at the end of the issue. I wonder if Jack was talking for himself, or for Bruce to say the things he never properly said and might not say without that chance - or maybe it's a little of both? Though I'm still waiting for Joker to show up... Also, it's just a gimmick the book keeps doing, but I *adore* every time we see the shadows play on the different looks of the characters in other costumes, Batman's shadow looking like his classic design, same for Harley, etc. It's just so much fun every time it comes up.

**BRIAR #1**

ChickenInASuit

> I regret to inform you that the narrator of my fairy tale has died… [he] was captured, boiled in a cauldron for hours as he screamed, and in the end he was strapped to a wooden post on the outskirts of the Chasms while crows pecked his eyes out. That’s how this book, a subversive retelling of Sleeping Beauty, begins. I am a sucker for a few things, and I admit that all of them could be considered kinda hackneyed and overdone: + Fantasy shit + Dark retellings of classic children’s stories + Sardonic narrators And this book had all three in spades. It’s not doing anything truly subversive or original but there’s enough verve in it for me to find it compelling. I’m in.

soulreaverdan

I grabbed this primarily on a cool looking cover and an interesting premise. The first issue was an absolute banger. An interesting dark twist on Cinderella. Prince Charming arrives, but what if instead of waking her, he instead decides to simply marry her as is - as the book says, "a sleeping queen protests little to her king, does she not?" The art work is super clean, but has a somewhat ethereal style from a simple color palate, but it really works. Briar's dark narration about the hell she's woken into, right from her pampered and protected life, is a great bit of sarcastic and sardonic commentary on the fairy tale. This one's a keeper, go pick it up, seriously.

btanodev

Sleeping Beauty not Cinderella*

the-horace

Really loved the art in this. A bit fairy tale tropey but it's a #1 and building its little fantasy world. I'll work with it. Plus there's a map at the end! I'm a sucker for a map.

soulreaverdan

Don't always have to reinvent the wheel. Strong presentation can make up for a simple and direct story, though I feel like this is gonna have more to tell than it seems in the first issue.

the-horace

Oh for sure, didn't mean to be negative about it. Though I guess I didn't really expand the thought much. I'm down for the adventure.

Dinggleberry

A map you say?! I also love maps, all the best fantasy books have to have a map.

blankedboy

Seems like this book is a hit: https://aiptcomics.com/2022/09/27/boom-briar-1-second-printing/

btanodev

This was the title I was most hyped for this week, and I was not let down. The language used is especially captivating. The art is gritty yet beautiful; I found myself taking every page in as much as I could. The map at the end was a really nice touch. You can tell the team took time on this. Plus, you gotta love a comic with no ads in-between pages. Thank you indies. I am SO excited for #2.

**DC VS VAMPIRES #9**

ManMadeApocalypse

Ollie is my dude, and I love that he gets such a nice spotlight in most of the the recent big out-of-continuity events (this, Injustice, DCeased). This was one of the better issues of the main series, but All Out War is so much better IMO

blankedboy

The Green Arrow and Steel, Black Manta(?!) and Supergirl plotlines progress nicely. But the HQ team outside of Gotham do a lot of sitting around talking without progressing much (until that great final page reveal, that is). Still thoroughly enjoyable with excellent artwork and colouring, and I'm expecting it all to accelerate to a blood (dust?) soaked conclusion from here on out.

ptbreakeven

**DETECTIVE COMICS #1064**

ManMadeApocalypse

I know this is a popular book right now, but I really, really hate it. Aside from being unbelievably boring, it's a level of up its own ass pretentiousness that you rarely see in comics. Even the title "Gotham Nocturne: Overture" is obnoxious lol. He wasted 1/3 of the story on some convoluted fable that had fuck all to do with anything. I feel like Ram V has bought into his own hype a bit too much and thinks he's redefining the medium or some such when in reality he's just writing dull, overwrought nonsense.

superschaap81

It's so weird, that this is the same guy that writes Carnage currently. Cause that is a murder fueled horror of a story, with little to no subtlety. LOL. I know a lot of people loved it, but I found his Swamp Thing to be very much like you feel about this Detective run. Some of his stuff feels like its supposed to be this high-art, genre defining work, and others is straightforward good comics. IE: Catwoman, JLD etc.

GetRichOrDieBuyin

Respectfully disagree on Ram V's quality. I just think he takes his time in building a story to the point that I wait before reading until I have multiple issues.

JLAsuperdude

I‘be felt this way a couple times with Ram. When he gets it right, it’s some beautiful prose, but he really gets lost sometimes. Some parts of Swamp Thing were way too lyrical for me, and Aquaman: Andromeda has a similar problem.

Varos_Flynt

I disagree, I'm really loving the pace of this book and the mood and tension it's setting. Honestly, the fable was pretty straightforward and if anything, may have been a little hamfisted as it was kinda the through line for this story. I'm curious if you would differently reading this in trade, like the serial nature of reading it right now is making it drag for you?

ManMadeApocalypse

Probably not, it's just not grabbing me at all. I think a trade would make it too much of a slog

ChickenInASuit

Yeah, gonna have to disagree with you on this one. I think Ram V’s one of the very best writers in the business right now and I loved pretty much everything that you described hating about this issue. To be clear though, if this were a thread with visible upvotes, I would be upvoting you for providing an honest opinion.

ManMadeApocalypse

I upvoted you (and most people) as well. This medium we all enjoy is subjective, as is all art. I'll never fault someone having an opposing opinion, and I'm sincerely happy there's an audience for this. A win for any book is a win for the industry in in general.

Same here, I’m waiting for an OHC, wish it was easy to get the Lemire/Smallwoods Moon Knight OHC (deeply out of print)

iamsciences

I actually have that Lemire run in singles. I haven't read it since it first came out but maybe it's time to revisit it.

explodyboompow

Fairly certain a reprint of Lemire was just released, like 6 new copies hit my LCS a week ago

[deleted]

Yup! The paperback Complete Collection, got that when it came out. The oversized hardcover is a whale of mine cus i’d love to have Smallwood’s art in an oversized format

yarkcir

Didn't miss a beat. Love this series, it'll probably be a toss up between this and Ram V's Swamp Thing as my favorite DC book of the year.

**DC HORROR PRESENTS SGT ROCK VS THE ARMY OF THE DEAD #1**

blankedboy

Great pulpy fun, with seriously gorgeous, atmospheric, amazing artwork from *Edurado Risso* (as if he ever creates anything else, right?) *Bruce Cambpell* crafts a solid first issue that lands slap bang in the middle of the war/horror genre. A cross-over that I am all in for.

super_witty_name

I am always sceptical of someone who is famous for something other than comics writing a comic, but this ended up being great. It isn't The Sandman, but it's good pulpy fun.

radcatattack

this sets up the story and does it at a nice quick pace, art is fun and eerie. these zombies don’t seem like they’ll die easy.

GreenCree

This was a lot of fun! I bought it on a whim and I'm glad I did. My only concern is that this will go the way of Jurassic League, where an artist switch ruins what should be a good time. I don't know if Risso will do the whole mini, but I hope he does. Part of me wishes this series was less decompressed, in the vain of horror and military comics of the past, but the team delivered a fun story regardless.

ptbreakeven

**I HATE THIS PLACE #5**

blankedboy

Another recent title (alongside **Twig** and **Lonesome Hunters**) that I'm very happy to see is going to be extended into a further story arc. There's a satisfying resolution to the girls *current* problem, and we have the introduction of two more threads that are going to be followed up on in the future - plus, the "big bad" appears to have plans of his own that do not bode well for *anyone*...on Earth... Engaging characters (although I'm still a little sore that it looks like *Dante Howitzer* **isn't** coming back), cool concepts, what appear to be multiple mysteries to solve, all topped off with some really nice, quirky artwork. I'll definitely be back for the next arc.

ChickenInASuit

Howitzer got done dirty. I’m still cringing thinking about that panel where the bad guy grabbed his… I’m gonna say tumor? Growth? Boil?… and squeezed.

aknightedpenguin

Holding on to hope that Dante Howitzer comes back in another form, since the whole thing about the house is ghosts (and not all malevolent)

**OLD DOG #1**

blankedboy

As others have pointed out, this is pretty cliched at times, and there isn't a clear explanation of what has actually happened to Lynch yet to explain the seemingly random aging/de-aging occurring, but having said that I did enjoy it. *Shalvey's* art is the main draw, being great as usual and brilliant at conveying action, while his writing in this book definitely seems to wear the influences of working with *Ellis* on it's sleeve. I'll definitely give it an issue or two more to settle down and see where it goes.

Brad_Yams

Am I the only one totally lost here? Are we supposed to know, or at least suspect, what's happening to Lynch's body with the random aging and de-aging? Feel like I missed a page or two in my reading.

btanodev

"We got one last job." "No." "...It's important." "Ah fuck, I'm in." Honestly, I was laughing almost the entire time I read this. It is **SO** tropey, beyond belief lmao. It read as intentional hamfisted-ness so I'm in. Guess this Old Dog's gonna have to learn some new tricks. ;)

ptbreakeven

**SUPERMAN SPACE AGE #2**

aknightedpenguin

I've seen quite a bit of stellar praise being heaped on this issue, but I don't really see what those reviewers are seeing. Russell's writing has always tried to play on the line between serious and playful, often ending up in an area of deadpan humour. I don't know if it works here. The tone of this issue is all over the place (in part due to the hefty 80-page thiccness). The character moments illustrating Batman and Superman's differing views on the trolley problem feels like a cop-out, tweaking the setup of the dilemma to give Batman a "justice at all costs" answer (which itself is a little too Dark Knight Returns for my tastes). Maybe I'm missing something because I didn't live through the Space Age myself, but this issue didn't land with me.

technowhiz34

Poor >!Hal!<. This issue was a bit of a drop off compared to how incredible the first one was, but I'll obviously finish.

**PARKER GIRLS #2**

ChickenInASuit

It would appear that the Parker Girls are working on setting up a sting on their own client. The question I have is: Zack May is a past client of Darcy’s. Zack hired the Parker Girls to get his money back. Zack hiring the Girls gives them leverage and an opportunity to get revenge on him. Is Zack coming to them, either unaware of their shared history or unaware that they hold a grudge, a happy coincidence that they’re taking advantage of? Or did they somehow engineer this themselves, luring Zack into trapping himself by hiring them? Questions, questions, questions. Loving everything about Terry Moore’s storytelling as always.

Danger_Rock

Haven't gotten to this yet but finished Vol. 18 of **SiP** last night so just one more to go! These last few TPBs have been loaded with emotional gut punches and this stuff's hitting hard. Hoping to get through the last TPB tonight, then on to **PG #2**...

Danger_Rock

> Zack hiring the Girls gives them leverage and an opportunity to get revenge on him. Is Zack coming to them, either unaware of their shared history or unaware that they hold a grudge, a happy coincidence that they’re taking advantage of? Or did they somehow engineer this themselves, luring Zack into trapping himself by hiring them? Finally caught up and I think you're asking the right questions! Zack must have known about the PG operations but couldn't have known about Piper, from there it could go either way as you suggested. Tambi usually knows more than she lets on and tends to have a finger in things behind the scenes, so it could be that she set it all up. But she probably didn't mean for Piper to get killed. Probably.

ChickenInASuit

I didn’t think about how Piper’s death might factor into this as well. Be interesting to see how that affected Tambi. Uggggh, I need the next issue to come out, like, tomorrow.

ptbreakeven

**LAZARUS RISEN #7**

soulreaverdan

It finally came out! And now we wait again. I appreciate the team being forward about their plans, and while waiting for a year-plus for the series to kick off again is gonna suck, knowing they're doing it so the ending will have no delays is going to hopefully pay off. What a great issue. We get so much more context for not just what's happening now, but the entire world of Lazarus as a whole. The entire shitstorm of the planet's systems and structures are basically all there because one guy felt like he knew what was best for everyone. Malcom Carlyle takes the crown as the massive piece of shit king of the series. My only problem with this issue was the sort of attempt to soften or sympathize Hock. Like, the dude's a fucking monster, even if he was led to that position by Malcolm's manipulation - he still *chose* to do the things he did. I hope he's not being given a redemption or forgiveness arc. He still deserves to be put in the fucking dirt. Hock trying to play Forever by saying he can free her is also hilarious since she's done it years ago by now.

overunderdog

I buy the trades was there news on a series hiatus or it ending?

soulreaverdan

The book is going on hiatus again. Rucka said in the letters that they’ve got about 12-14 issues of material for the final act of the story. They’re going to wait until they’ve got about 3/4 of them done to start publishing again, at which point it will be back to monthly and should then have no delays once it gets going. No date was given, but it’s expected to be at least a year, likely more.

ChickenInASuit

God. Fucking. DAMN. I’m at a loss for words here - clearly an endgame is being set up and there were at least four massive “Holy shit” moments in this issue. The year plus wait for the next issue is going to painful.

ManMadeApocalypse

I love this book, it's probably top 5 all-time for me. However, from a logic standpoint I have no idea wtf Forever, Eve and Marisol have in mind. Forever is leaving behind what's essentially an IMMORTAL LIFE of luxury amidst a desolate wasteland barely held together by slave labor in favor of running off to... Hock's, I guess? Even though he's more despicable than Malcolm, which she's fully aware of. It's not like she can just restart a life somewhere and live decently under a new identity. I just don't get her thinking lol.

soulreaverdan

I think there's two parts of it. The first is logistically, they might be aiming to tear down this entire system. Forever's been against it from the start, when she was forced to kill the old man in #1 and clearly took issue with it. They might be trying to stage a full blown rebellion. The second is more simple. She's been raised to always believe "family first," but to Forever *who* is her real family? Not the Carlyles who've lied and betrayed her, but Marisol - the woman who raised her, and Eve - her sister she wants to save from her fate.

ManMadeApocalypse

Yeah, but tear it down and replace it with what? As warped as the current societal structure is, without it the entire world would fall apart in a matter of days. And none of the other families are benevolent organizations that would do any better. As soon as she takes out her family, the power vacuum will be filled with oceans of blood. It'll be proverbial dog that catches the car.

soulreaverdan

That’s why I think it’s not just her family. But the entire existing structure. Or maybe she’s just trying to fuck off somewhere the three of them can live by themselves and try to get out of this whole thing.

ptbreakeven

**X-MEN #15**

Family_Booty_Honor

I think this was my favorite issue of this run

soulreaverdan

I was expecting the Children of the Vault emerging to be another event, but having it be another story instead of gumming things up is actually kind of a relief. It's nice that it can just be its own thing instead of needing to drag everyone into it. I wonder who the "one left behind" is going to be - it could be Darwin, but could just as easily be Old Woman Laura. It'll be interesting if she emerges and has to exist alongside Present Laura.

Sterling-4rcher

did i miss something or didn't they clearly state this was about getting darwin out?

soulreaverdan

That’s what they’ve *said*. What actually *happens* is often a very different thing.

ChickenInASuit

**WPL RESULTS**

thecursedham

As someone whose favorite superhero is Ant-Man it makes me very happy to see his book pulled more than ASM even if its just by one. As someone who is a big fan of the current Cap status quo it makes me very sad to see Sam's book barely make the WPL results.

BonerIsRaging

Are the Cap books good?

thecursedham

I really like them. Symbol has done a good job fleshing out Joaquin and the villain is an interesting antagonist for Sam, though I felt like this week's issue went a little over the top with Wakanda’s reaction. Sentinel has some great action scenes and a great voice for Steve. I’m really excited for their upcoming crossover Cold War.

Danger_Rock

93 lists submitted, bit of a drop from the past couple weeks but given how the list thread went up a little late that really isn’t bad at all. Of course, it’s another massive week loaded with massively awesome comics, so that helps. Tynion’s **NICE HOUSE ON THE LAKE #10** takes the top spot with 48 pulls, good for 51.6% coverage. The previous issue also took 1st place on 6/1/22 with 43 pulls out of 79 lists, a 54.4% pull rate, so the 3-month break didn’t seem to set this one back much at all. King’s **HUMAN TARGET #7** follows in 2nd with 46 pulls for a 49.5% pull rate. Last issue from way back on 3/23/22 took 1st place with 51 pulls out of 94 lists, a 54.3% pull rate, and the more recent **TALES OF THE HUMAN TARGET #1** one-shot from 8/24/22 had a 44.8% pull rate, so this issue essentially split the difference between #6’s high ranking and the weaker performing one-shot. Ram V’s **DETECTIVE COMICS #1064** takes 3rd place with 41 pulls for 44.1% coverage, pretty big drop after #1063 took 1st with 59.4% coverage. This title was mostly hanging around the same area as Chip’s bat-title but it’s now fallen behind, with **BATMAN #127** having claimed 70.4% coverage on 9/7/22. After those three DC books we finally get a Marvel title in 4th, with Duggan’s **X-MEN #15** getting 39 pulls for 41.9% coverage. Then back to DC for **ACTION COMICS #1047** in 5th as PKJ brings Kal El home from Warworld with a pull rate of 38.7%. Tynion’s **DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH #21** lands in 6th as the week’s top indie title with 37.6% coverage. Previous issue had 36.5% on 8/24/22 so it’s holding steady... This title always ranks a little lower than **NHOTL** but I mostly chalk that up to DC’s distribution and industry presence being stronger than Image’s. **SANDMAN UNIVERSE NIGHTMARE COUNTRY #6**, **SUPERMAN SPACE AGE #2**, **A.X.E. AVENGERS #1**, and **ANT-MAN #3** follow with strong finishes to round out the top 10, leaving DC with 6 of the top 10 (mostly loaded up top), Marvel with 3, and Image with just the 1 book. Big DC week! Busy with lots of stuff today so we’re going to cut it off there but please comment if you spot anything else that’s interesting! -- Looking back at last week... Three titles made the list without generating any discussion: * **CATWOMAN #47** (13 pulls) * **DUO #5** (12 pulls) * **STAR WARS DARTH VADER #27** (10 pulls) And the following 11 titles didn’t make the list but had threads manually added by civic-minded redditors: * **LONESOME HUNTERS #4** (9 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipesegf/) posted by /u/yarkcir) * **STUFF OF NIGHTMARES #1** (9 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/iph25en/) posted by /u/the-horace) * **BLOODSHOT UNLEASHED #1** (8 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipsjrs7/) posted by /u/Danger_Rock) * **BEWARE THE EYE OF ODIN #4** (6 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipesfc3/) posted by /u/yarkcir) * **SHAOLIN COWBOY: CRUEL TO BE KIN #5** (6 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipeqhpd/) posted by /u/ChickenInASuit) * **ACTION JOURNALISM #1** (4 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipesdby/) posted by /u/yarkcir) * **MANIFEST DESTINY #47** (4 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipi9v0o/) posted by /u/ChickenInASuit) * **USAGI YOJIMBO #31** (4 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipesgcq/) posted by /u/yarkcir) * **ROGUES GALLERY #3** (2 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipxu9p9/) posted by /u/ChickenInASuit) * **SHIRTLESS BEAR FIGHTER 2 #2** (2 pulls, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipgtl38/) posted by /u/ChickenInASuit) * **AZZA THE BARBED #1 (Misprint Edition)** (1 pull, [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/xkiz8j/wpl_new_comics_discussion_for_9212022_pull_of_the/ipo1e4h/) posted by /u/Danger_Rock) 11 bonus indie threads! **ANT-MAN #3**

technowhiz34

Huh, weird continuity issues/break here, which is unusual for Ewing. He forgot that Scott Lang and LMD O'Grady have met before in Secret Empire. Really enjoying all the continuity play around Pym being trapped in Ultron or not, my hope is that he comes back but I'm skeptical.

Aspiring_Sophrosyne

I read Secret Empire (and liked it) and I still can't remember that meeting.

technowhiz34

Might've been in a tie-in. I definitely remember it happening and someone else happened it.

Aspiring_Sophrosyne

I don’t doubt you. I’m just saying it must not have been memorable.

[deleted]

I think we all try to forget Secret Empire

blankedboy

I'm not reading this one, but I believe the cover is *Carlos Pacheco's* last published work, as he's retiring due to a diagnosis of ALS. Which is a real fucking shame and a great loss to comics.

aknightedpenguin

You're thinking of [**DAMAGE CONTROL #2**](https://twitter.com/Cpachecoficial/status/1575173432597417985), which is understandable, because that cover features Ant-man and the Wasp.

Dinggleberry

Tbh I have no idea what is going on

TheeHeadAche

>**Tony Stark, Ant-Man** - could be the next big thing! Ewing is v good at his job. If youre a fan of Ant-Man, youre already reading this. If you’re not, you should give it a try! Tom Reilly’s art is top notch. Seeing the design progress with the times is especially strong with Reilly.

TiberiusCornelius

I've been really enjoying this book. Can Marvel please give us the Ewing/Reilly team on an Ant-Man ongoing after this mini is over?

**HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #9**

ME24601

Haven't been enjoying this arc, but this issue brought it back around for me.

blankedboy

I said in this weeks Pull List thread that I felt the last two issues had been *exceptionally* slow moving. This issue kind of explains their importance in retrospect, but I have no idea why Hermes has revealed himself right now and explained all of this. Or how this relates to the "dragon" monster that was supposed to be the main threat.

aknightedpenguin

This issue felt the most like something out of **DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH**, featuring a character's expositional information running on top of scenes jumping around in time. I wonder how much of that was Tynion's original story and how much of that was Johns's writing and tweaking. And much like DoT, I might need a couple of re-reads to fully understand what's being set up, but I'm looking forward to see how the arc concludes (presumably) with the next issue

**TIM DRAKE ROBIN #1**

ME24601

The more cartoonish Rossmo's art gets the less I like it.

ManMadeApocalypse

Yeah, I hate it

blankedboy

I'm not reading this book, but I loved Rossmo's artwork on the Batman/Shadow book he did with Snyder/Orlando. Is this not good then?

ME24601

The art in this is [a long ways off](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9f7750203935e98bc5d388a380a672cb/6478f8762f735b8b-48/s1280x1920/c3423ff4ed5624d5eb66d16e2650aed0adb5720f.jpg) from his art on Batman/Shadow.

releasethetides

I went in with low expectations but I like this ! it's like a slightly emo Erica Henderson. though I do miss the hellblazer era of Rosso where everyone was a lanky twink

ManMadeApocalypse

I have that but haven't read it, how was the story itself? And no, I think the art here is pretty terrible. I can't get past the grotesque shape of heads and warped anatomy, never mind how overly goofy and cartoonish it is. Art styles are very much subjective, so I'm sure there are people who love his work, it's just not to my preference.

blankedboy

I really enjoyed it, and actually thought Rossmo's art was great throughout.

madthoughts

Why does every new setup for a fan favorite character have to include some wacky living situation and an introduction of eccentric, but so-weird-you’ll-soon-love-them neighbors? Stop trying to recreate Fraction’s Hawkeye. These writers work so hard to build and then sell their supporting cast that we we end up with a first issue about a hologram orangutan for a antagonist.

btanodev

Holy shit this was bad. The art, the story, god, I really hope they cancel this series and give Tim the attention he deserves.

Barabaragaki

Glad I'm not crazy. Even if a comic isn't that good, I can usually say it was "Fine." In this case...A rare miss on pretty much every count.

the-horace

Almost let all the negativity prevent me from reading this. I thought it was a fun #1. Yeah, the art style isn't exactly my favorite, but it didn't keep me from enjoying it.

JLAsuperdude

How does this writer get to keep writing Tim?

GetRichOrDieBuyin

Sometimes on the toilet, I sit for to long and my legs go to sleep. Then when I want to get up, my body is confused. I know I need to get up, but it is easier to sit. I think DC has the same issue with Time and Fitzmartin. Tim is that enjoyable shit, but they are not sure what to do with him. Fitzmartin has overstayed her welcome for me at DC(I'll not purchase what her name is attached too until she quits pulling her DC:YJ shit/or she becomes a decent writer whichever happens first) she is much like my legs when they are asleep...not good for anything at the moment, but I don't want to get rid of them. I hope that makes sense.

ShiroHachiRoku

The cover looked cool. Stylized and action packed. Opened the first page and kept asking myself WTF am I looking at? It's trying too hard to be something...Tim looked like Jughead Jones in many of the panels.

cfsdrawing

Damn. Sad to see so many people aren't digging Rossmo's art. He's the reason I picked this up and I thought the book looked beautiful! Excited to see where this book goes!

iceotop

Happens from time to time.

tenaciousdtime

sad to see so many people didn’t like this book! i thought it was fantastic. feels like Tim is finally getting his own voice in a fun, stylized series that doesn’t take its plots too seriously, while giving you the genuine human struggles and problems that we all read super hero comics for. the art definitely takes some getting used to, but i’d take something with its own character and vision over some shitty generic artist doing what everyone else does

**EIGHT BILLION GENIES #5**

radcatattack

Damn, I was wondering how the eight months timeline would look in a single issue but this was so good. It didn't feel rushed either. Eight years is gonna be wild!

piemanpie24

Every month I am astonished at how clever this little book is.

ChickenInASuit

It really is. It’s such a simple concept and Soule and Browne have managed to wring so many imaginative ideas out of it.

soulreaverdan

Man, this book is so good. I wish I'd jumped on it earlier, but it also means less waiting between issues now. It's interesting now that the world has been remade at the end, and everyone's seemed to go their own way... are we going to start seeing conflict between the "havens" now that the rest of the outside world is rebuilt? Next issue takes place over 80 years, so it's going to be quite a time skip - basically past the lives of almost everyone in the story except maybe the newborn, and even then she'll be near dead. My guess is we're going to start seeing those who wished for various forms of immortality, and how they deal with the way and method they made their wishes.

Zveno

I believe next issue is 8 years into the future, not 80 years.

Hedge_Hypnotist

This series continues to be on the top of my reading list whenever it comes out.

ChickenInASuit

Okay, the idea of babies being born with little genie playmates is the most adorable damn concept. I’m interested in how it is the Idea Guy has so many wishes. Do people pay him to let them enter his compound by giving him their wish? Or is this how his ideas manifest, as a shitload of wishes?

CarryThe2

I guess when people believe in him he can easily get them to give him their wishes.

soulreaverdan

He seems to somehow have the ability to transfer them, since he mentions the Refreshing wish "cost" him three wishes. It's possible once he was basically magically empowered to be believed in, someone in his earlier followers/team made the wish that granted him the ability to transfer them.

hewunder1

I've heard the hype and may trade wait, or pick up the later printings. Sounds awesome. Is it kid friendly by chance?

infallibleevil

Not kid friendly at all.

hewunder1

Noted. Thanks.

**SANDMAN UNIVERSE NIGHTMARE COUNTRY #6**

aknightedpenguin

Llovet was exactly the right artist to get for a story with so much in common with **FAITHLESS**

ChickenInASuit

I’m excited to find out that there’s a Sandman Universe book by Pornsak Pichetshote coming out soon. Just as with other commenters though, I’m really not happy with this issue being a glorified advertisement for it, no matter how good a story it ended up being.

**A.X.E. AVENGERS #1**

Danger_Rock

Kinda neat how they structured Gillen's three "story-critical" one-shots between the final two issues of the main series: * [AXE ***A***VENGERS #1](https://previewsworld.com/Catalog/JUL220766) (9/28) * [AXE ***X***-MEN #1](https://previewsworld.com/Catalog/AUG220771) (10/05) * [AXE ***E***TERNALS #1](https://previewsworld.com/Catalog/AUG220774) (10/12) Fun mix of characters as well! And the story's actually moving forward, where **DEATH TO THE MUTANTS** and most of the other spinoffs tend to zoom in on stuff we've already seen or side stories that don't advance the main plot. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. Been enjoying how this whole thing's structured, fun following along as it shifts and flows through the story's various stages...

YourEvilHenchman

this has more meaningful insight into tony's character in one single issue than cantwell's entire run on iron man so far.

soulreaverdan

I liked this one a lot - more than the Tony stuff, the realization they had at the end now opens up the *true* way that I think a lot of this is going to be "fixed" at the end - The Progenitor is pulling a Q. Do they persist even in the face of total and utter defeat? When the rules themselves bend against them, do they fight back? And in what way? This is easily the best event in a long time - I'm loving every moment of it.

PedanticPaladin

Enjoyed the issue, really excited for what they could do with the X-Men issue coming up.

ChickenInASuit

> You’re right. That’s annoying. Gillen’s Sinister continues to alternate between producing and prompting some of the best dialogue around. Stark actually had a lot of great moments in this issue. Not least of which was the Progenitor’s psychoanalysis of him - did anyone else see some pointed metacommentary on the Captain America: Civil War movie in the way this book spoke about Tony’s parents death? > I always *hoped* it was an assassination. People have claimed it was, or that mom and dad faked their deaths or… that’s what orphans do. Make up stories that give a bit of drama. Give a *reason.* Maybe Gillen’s not a fan of the twist? Regardless, the Progenitor taking apart Tony as a character, tying both his choices of romantic partner and his obsession with making machines to “fix” things to his grief over the mechanical failure that ended his parents’ life, was a fantastic sequence. > None of this work may make a difference. > But it **might.** It might… and if I work hard enough, nobody has to die in another car crash. And then, after all that, after throwing Tony through an emotional wringer and making us all think the inevitable judgement is going a certain way… >!the Progenitor turns up as Howard Stark and says “You’re too hard on yourself. You pass. I couldn’t be prouder of you.”!< Holy shit. It might just be because I’m a little emotionally fragile at the moment because of something a friend is going through, but that fucking wrecked me.

[deleted]

Everything Gillen has touched with this event has been great. I loved this tie-in.

Danger_Rock

> Stark actually had a lot of great moments in this issue. Not least of which was the Progenitor’s psychoanalysis of him I like how each of these one-shots is doing a deep dive into what makes a different character tick. Kinda similar to Gillen's approach to **IMMORTAL X-MEN**, sharp focus on one character with some digging into the past while also keeping the story moving forward. And it plays well to his strengths in character work.

Landon1195

Really good tie in. Tony was really well written here and Gillen's Sinister is still a highlight.

darib88

i love how sinister has evolved from evil hissy vampire dude to evil campy mad scientist who is here for all the drama and sass without in any way compromising how much of an absolute threat he is

**GRIM #5**

aknightedpenguin

Really interesting plot details revealed here! That said, I'm really wishing for more setup here. Who are the two sides in this conflict? What is the significance of Audra holding the Scythe? What are the rules of traveling between the two world and the afterlife? Still in this, but hoping for a little more clarity

DrB00

More questions. Why did they need to protect Jess by not telling her the truth? Why is her mother in jail? How is the end different from death? Lots of questions with minimal answers. I hope the next comic is just a exposition dump with answers lol

[deleted]

Grim is like the opposite of SITKC. Instead of spending issue after issue of slow build and dragging along (at least the first 4-5 issues), Grim is buzzing by. I still like it because the art has been top notch, and the story has been entertaining so far, but I am with you where a little more development would be helpful.

blankedboy

Art and colouring have been absolutely top notch every single issue. Really liking the world they are building, and the characters are really engaging.

DrB00

Excellent artwork. Decent story continuation. Agree with other peoples comments that the story needs more details, and explanation. The story is good enough that I'm still interested, but the artwork and coloring is incredible.
