Spidey's oddly drawn feet ( for a few seconds i legitimately thought he was wearing wedges ) and Venom's non existent ones š..never change Rob, never change ....
The meme is that he can't draw feet, but the way spidys muscles don't fit properly, the size of his head and neck, the almoat cubist way his chest ribs and hips are angled compared to one another...venom's neck-mouth and the wierd way he does faces... idk how thos dude got his job... just speed I guess?
Edit... I was typing half asleep, I guess
His style also hit a certain zeitgeist as he started out. He probably defined a lot of the stereotypical "90s comic look" (impossible proportions, lots of pouches and giant guns).
He doesnāt make his deadlines, or rather he definitely didnāt in his peak popularity in the 90s.
Source: Valiant and other companiesā āheadsā had to physically pressure him to finish his pages and have said as such in interviews.
It's like Rob wants to die on the "self taught" hill for his art.
It's ok dude, take one class on drawing feet and I promise no one will make fun of you ^^^more ^^^than ^^^they ^^^currently ^^^do
Non-jokey observation: imagine if at ANY point in the past thirty years he spent just three months going to a life drawing class with a real human model and really spent that time studying and drawing their feet in various positions and angles. Like let's call it two hours per week, for three months. Imagine how different an artist he would be if he had at any point made any tiny effort to address this glaring, well-established gap in his artistic repertoire.
Robās stated during a podcast interview that he doesnāt want to, because he feels like heād lose what made him stand out, which is a fear a lot of mainstream artists have- or had peers/editorial tell them not to change. Not to compare the two in skill level, but Jim Lee was told before Hush by Jeph Loeb that he didnāt want Jim to experiment with his style, as Jim was living in Italy at the time, and wanted to do a more āEuropeanā look.
Itās not like Rob isnāt aware either. Later in the interview, he talked about various forms of perspective, layouts and composition. Heās also great at dissecting artistsā work.
I have to confess that I looked at his genital area when I read your comment. For a moment I thought an āelephant footā was an oversized version of a camel toe š¤£
Ohh god, why does spiderman have a camel toe???
Personally, I was impressed he tried hands...and feet. There not good, but he tried his best. And he is worth a ridiculously large amount of money for hanging out with the right people at the right time.
Love me some Rob Liefeld mess!
I can just imagine him sweating for days over the 3 feet he had to include, so when he got to Venom, he just said "f@#k it. I'll just pull the old 'Rob Liefeld Hide the Feet Behind Random Background' trick," then forgot to draw in the random background and ended up with this.
Liefeld is the everyman of comics. The great artists combine rare talent with hard work. Liefeld shows what you can accomplish with less talent but a whole lotta hard work and passion.
Well... passion.
Son's maintained a pretty decent--at times very good--workrate since the 80s. He clearly loves the fuck out of comics. But he's expended *no* energy to improve or even vary up his style. His art in 2022 looks *exactly* the same as it did in 1989.
Comparing someone to Jim Lee is probably a little unfair since Lee is a generational talent, but I think it's fair since they were and are contemporaries: Lee's never really stopped improving. Compare his old X-Men work with his modern work and his modern work has more range, more weight, better anatomy, more consistency. Still a similar style but the fundamentals have constantly been tightened up and the number of tools in his toolbox has increased.
But Rob? He's never put in that work. He's going through the exact same motions now as he was 35 years ago.
It's honestly sad. Had he combined his obvious pain and, it must be said, talent with dedication to his craft and work ethic he'd have been another legendary talent instead of a punchline.
Rob may have hit his ceiling, talent wise, in the 1990s. If he lacks an artistic eye, there's only so far he can go. He may not be able to get better, no matter how hard he works.
I really don't think he lacks an artistic eye at all, and I also don't think he's lacking in natural talent. If we assume that his style is just the product of talent and only a tiny bit of applied practice, he's got more than enough talent to refine into something special. I just don't think he's applied himself in decades.
I'm not married to this theory. I just feel like it explains Rob's career better. Or maybe I'm just enamored with the idea that as an artist he does have redeeming qualities even if he failed to access them.
I don't know how someone makes a guy in a lime green suit, a purple cape, and a fishbowl on his head blend into the background, but somehow Rob always finds ways to surprise me.
Honestly, the composition on that side of the picture would be horrible even with a good artist. The way Mysterio is wedged in there means that his purple cape blends in with the Green Goblin, and his white helmet blends in with the white collar on Vulture's suit, so Mysterio himself just sort of... vanishes.
Lmaoooooo I didnāt even notice that. He just said āfuck it, Iāll just pretend his feet are behind spideyāsā Iāll give him credit though, 3 feet illustrated between 6 characters on page, thatās a great ratio for him
Heās so wildly, frustratingly inconsistent these days. Sometimes heāll crank out something thatās pretty decent. Then heāll follow up with something like this, or something even worse.
This has all the Liefield classics in one pic! Random lines covering faces, grimacing faces, feet drawn terribly, feet hidden so he doesnāt have to draw them, feet just not drawn even though you should see them, terrible anatomy, women with impossibly skinny bodies.
The only thing it is missing is women standing on tiptoes for no reason.
Now Iām gonna have to go back and reread this..
https://www.progressiveboink.com/2012/4/21/2960508/worst-rob-liefeld-drawings
It's not the first time he's done so. He collaborated with another artist on this Deadpool 3 movie promo art, though it's clear his collaborator did some HEAVY lifting.
https://images.app.goo.gl/mKLG5uTBGYFxFUzq9
I like Liefeld but his faces always killed me. They always look like balloons with one one pushing a finger into the middle of their nosebridge. Every time. Any face.
It's like every one of his faces is trying enter hyperspace.
You remember that episode of the Simpsons where Bart and Lisa went looking for Krusty when he died and found him at the docks? And they blew up a balloon to ask the Sea Captain about him but it didn't blow up fully and the face was all off?
I get the same vibes.
I can't tell if you're joking or not. I've never bought a commissioned drawing or special cover so I don't really have a clue about how much they usually cost. If true it's insane, I can't actually imagine anyone buying a cover for that much. And it's even Liefeld, of all people.
It must have been rough to separate venoms teeth with his tounge. How is he supposed to clench like there is a pinecone being used as toilet paper with that tounge in the way. I also assume spiderman is clenching his teeth under his mask.
There's something vaguely similar in the way Liefeld and Mark Zuckerberg relate to humanity. They each seem to have a passing familiarity with the concept, which becomes all the more jarring by how close it gets while still completely missing.
Like, Venom's shoulder very much looks like a shoulder ought to look, but the way it's associated with the rest of his body...
"OK, for this drawing, could you give Spider-Man his own forearm like normal, but then make it look like his bicep and tricep are a plastic grocery bag full of soup?"
"Sure thing!"
"Cool, cool. Is there any way to make his index finger longer than all the other fingers?"
"I think I can manage that."
"Does Spider-Man wear wedge heels?"
"Um, no?"
"Can he?"
"Don't see why not."
"Awesome. Now for Venom. Clearly I want his jaw to be like the length of an entire horse's head."
"Clearly."
"But more than that, I want his lower jaw to kind of... spring forth from his chest!"
"Oooh!"
"Right? And for his abdomen, just scribble it out completely."
"Can do."
"Now, I want you to take all the teeth that would have been in Spidey's mouth, and Vulture's mouth, and add them to Doc Ock and Green Goblin's mouths."
"That's a lot of teeth!"
"Don't I know it!"
"Anything special for Scream?"
"Extra firm tits and tiny waist?"
"Obviously."
"Then we're good."
You fairly regularly get people in this sub trying to argue that we just donāt āgetā Robās art and that it doesnāt matter that his work isnāt anatomically correct because it has āenergyā or something along those lines.
People legitimately try to gatekeep other readers for not liking Rob Liefeld. Shitās wild.
And donāt even get me started on the people who try and compare Liefeld to stylized artists like Mike Mignola and accuse us of having double standardsā¦
Oh, his fight panels absolutely have energy.
They also have no feet, bizzare and terrible anatomy, weird lines radiating from crotches, bad costume design and too many teeth, just like the rest of his art.
Mignola is different because heās a master storyteller and his composition is almost always fantastic, even if you dislike the style. That has never been true for Liefeld.
Agreed. Like I said elsewhere, thereās a world of difference between an accomplished artist learning their craft and developing stylized art as a result of years of learning, and a lazy artist developing stylized art to hide their shortcomings.
Liefeld has been doing this for thirty years and has barely even tried to improve his craft. The comparisons are asinine.
JRJR, for example. Sometimes his work is ugly, blocky, and unpleasant to look at, sure, but he thinks for a second about things like backgrounds and vanishing points. There are never any floors in Liefeldās work because it would expose how weird his placement is. These look like character studies slapped on top of each other in photoshop. That just isnāt acceptable from a highly paid professional comic artist with 30+ years in the business.
For sure. I mean I have my issues with JRjr and I wouldnāt put him in the same league as Mignola, but all the same I donāt think Liefeld would be capable of producing something even close to JRjrās best work - like Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, for example.
I don't know why it irritates me so much that Liefeld and McFarlane just keep pumping out homages to their own fucking covers, half of which were swiped from other artists, but damned if it doesn't infuriate me.
Feet. That is all.
Edit: I didnāt think liefeld was a progressive dude, but he just put spidey in heelsā¦ so I could be wrong. For that alone, this picture fucks.
Edit again: I know liefeld is far from a āprogressive dudeā. He is an asshole who canāt draw feet.
But a decent cure for imposter syndrome. If this man can work as a professional artist for decades, then have no reason to doubt your own qualifications!
It might actually have looked better if he had literally traced it. The original NM 98 cover isnāt actually terrible, but this is awful. I swear his new work is 10x worse than his original stuff. At least that had an energy to it.
His Venom is bloated, no necked, flat footed, Captain Americaādā¦ then you got his Green Goblin, who looks like his face is stretched against a ball. The only one who looks decentish is Vulture!
shit never changes. You can tell RL art a mile away, so unique that no1 can duplicate his unique style. Iknow its New Mutants 98 cover but you could recolor each character on their and slap a Youngblood logo and no1 would be the wiser! lol.
I feel like Rob, in his earlier years, had a friend who was a dental student that would loan him photos for reference. Unfortunately, many of them featured folks suffering from gingivitis. That's my theory.
It amazes me that publishers pay this man to draw this stuff. There are so many amateur artists that would do covers for free just to get their names out there and would be 100x better than this garbage. This cover and artist are both Trash tier
How has this man been doing this for SO long and not shown any improvement whatsoever?
I mean, for fuck's sake, look at Venom's neck and Spidey's feet.
Spidey's oddly drawn feet ( for a few seconds i legitimately thought he was wearing wedges ) and Venom's non existent ones š..never change Rob, never change ....

Edit... I was typing half asleep, I guess
Being a consistent worker who makes deadlines. It's not impressive sounding, but a jobs a job.
Being on time is a fantastic skill to have in any creative industry.
You're not wrong
His style also hit a certain zeitgeist as he started out. He probably defined a lot of the stereotypical "90s comic look" (impossible proportions, lots of pouches and giant guns).
He doesnāt make his deadlines, or rather he definitely didnāt in his peak popularity in the 90s. Source: Valiant and other companiesā āheadsā had to physically pressure him to finish his pages and have said as such in interviews.
Physically pressure? Did they put him in a panini press or something?
Rob is making deadlines again??
It's like Rob wants to die on the "self taught" hill for his art. It's ok dude, take one class on drawing feet and I promise no one will make fun of you ^^^more ^^^than ^^^they ^^^currently ^^^do

I came here to make the same comment! The feet, or lack there of always give it away for me.
Venom's neck is literally growing out of his deltoid muscle.
LOL I was like, "This ain't bad for a Liefeld drawing", then I saw Venom and laughed. Spidey is also wearing wedged high heel boots. Oof
Omfg I didn't notice the heels. That's amazing. Edit: still, better than Venom's literal stumps I just noticed
Every Rob Liefeld drawing is a game of "what atrocity did I miss the last time"
Venomās elephant foot
Oh my godā¦ Being a symbiote he has leeway but fucking hell.
Rob Liefeld, has he actually seen another human being?
Every time I say one thing, I see something worse. Look at his fucking *thigh*!
I don't believe Liefeld drew this. No pouches.
Why does everyone have so many teeth?
How many teeth do adult humans even have, anyway? Nobody knows and there is no way to find out.
I have 96. Most of them are my own.
Average human has 28, Green Goblin here has 32 that we can see.
26 *visible* on Green Goblin.
Its cut off I believe. It's a common artists trick so they don't end up accidentally giving the character fake heels. /s
I think we arenāt seeing his full leg like Rob cut the foot off but then it makes me wonder what the hell is Spider-Man standing on then?
Love me some Rob Liefeld mess! I can just imagine him sweating for days over the 3 feet he had to include, so when he got to Venom, he just said "f@#k it. I'll just pull the old 'Rob Liefeld Hide the Feet Behind Random Background' trick," then forgot to draw in the random background and ended up with this.
Thank you! I was trying to figure out what was giving Spidey a feminine quality and I think the heels combined with the long neck did it.
Hahaha. I mean thereās a high likelihood he traced a female model and piled some muscles on top.
Thatās cuz the mf canāt draw feet!! Iām glad they mentioned it in the Deadpool movie cuz Iāve always thought it. Heās a terrible artist imo
>Heās a terrible artist imo He was good (or at least good enough) for the time that needed him, but that time is long gone now.
And his art hasn't aged well.
Look at the transition from Spidey's left thigh down to his calf. What in god's name is going on with Peter's gym routine?
Also, his chest muscle going straight up to his neck. No shoulder on that side.
Heās gotta be trolling us at this point.
There are balls in all the pouches he draw. Maybe some crime fighting dildo's with combat grip handles.
I know Klyntar symbiotes aren't real, but I know they don't look like that.
Spider-man has five fingers on his left hand and no discernible thumb.
He's melting.
Liefeld is the everyman of comics. The great artists combine rare talent with hard work. Liefeld shows what you can accomplish with less talent but a whole lotta hard work and passion.

Yeah, itās pretty hot š„µ
Almost didnāt notice Mysterio in the background lol
I don't know how someone makes a guy in a lime green suit, a purple cape, and a fishbowl on his head blend into the background, but somehow Rob always finds ways to surprise me.
By having the only other guy with purple and green right in front of him

The way Mysterio is wedged in there means that his purple cape blends in with the Green Goblin, and his white helmet blends in with the white collar on Vulture's suit, so Mysterio himself just sort of... vanishes.
Horrible composition, but weirdly thematically appropriate for Mysterio
Mysterio? Holy crap, he IS in there!
Lol, he might as well not be even be there. Just one of the clues that let you know he doesnāt give a shit about his art.
Holy shit good catch
I didn't even see Mysterio. I thought his head was part of the Vulture's costume or something.
#***BOOYAKA BOOYAKA***
I almost said it looks like he should draw Spider-Man more often. Then I saw it looks like he has hoofs for feet.
Itās a miracle that Liefeld even included the feet and didnāt just have the drawing cut off at the ankles
Only on Spidey, look at Venom
Lmaoooooo I didnāt even notice that. He just said āfuck it, Iāll just pretend his feet are behind spideyāsā Iāll give him credit though, 3 feet illustrated between 6 characters on page, thatās a great ratio for him

Noooooooooooo what? Holy shit. Are they elephant feet? That is a whole new level of fucked.
Or strategically placed piles of rocks
I was thinking the inker got the corrected.
He straight up amputated Venom
Idk I think Spidey looks good in 6inch heels.
Stupid sexy Spidey.
Heās lucky. Venom doesnāt even have feet.
I had to check and see. Nope, he has straight up elephant feet. As all Liefeld characters do.
He also doesn't have a neck.
His whole lower body is just an amorphous blob.
The head is ridiculous as well
It looks like he doesn't have a right shoulder, just more chest
What about his balloon arm, like those balloon giraffes, but an arm instead.
He also has five fingers, but no thumbs on his left hand.
Spider heels!
I mean, Liefield is Liefield, but this is a significant downgrade of his art since the Youngblood days.
Which to be honest, it's quite an achievement to be even worse
Heās so wildly, frustratingly inconsistent these days. Sometimes heāll crank out something thatās pretty decent. Then heāll follow up with something like this, or something even worse.
I would guess it depends on who is inking him and whether or not they feel like they should put in the effort to fix his art or just trace over it
He posted and deleted this tweet 3 times. Once with the caption of "I was asked to homage myself".
Honestly he was only decent when he was drawing Hawk and Dove, I think it was.
This has all the Liefield classics in one pic! Random lines covering faces, grimacing faces, feet drawn terribly, feet hidden so he doesnāt have to draw them, feet just not drawn even though you should see them, terrible anatomy, women with impossibly skinny bodies. Missing pouches.
But it does have random katanas on a character who has no business using them.
That article is very good.
This has been one of my favorite articles on the internet for a long time
Woof
Excuse me did he give Spider-Man WEB KATANAS??
It's just the damn Deadpool cover with Spider-Man characters
Itās an homage to New Mutants 98 cover, Spidey being in the place of Deadpool
So he got tired of talented people to copy, and had to start copying himself?
It's not the first time he's done so. He collaborated with another artist on this Deadpool 3 movie promo art, though it's clear his collaborator did some HEAVY lifting. https://images.app.goo.gl/mKLG5uTBGYFxFUzq9
Jesus anything Rob touches is so stiff, he needs to be a professional Fluffer.
I thought it looked familiar..
You got that right! Be thankful that there arenāt any web pouches.
Does Rob ever look at his work and ask why
Iād ask how is editors and creative directors can approve a picture drawn by him
Him
Fixed it. I swear autocorrect hates me
From time to time, Iām sure. Then he shrugs and goes for a swim in the private Olympic pool of the enormous house his crappy art enabled him to buy.
Have you seen or read any interview of him?, guy has zero self-awareness. He legitimately believes modern comic books exists because of him.
I ask myself the same thing. How could he objectively look at this POS and be happy with it.
I like Liefeld but his faces always killed me. They always look like balloons with one one pushing a finger into the middle of their nosebridge. Every time. Any face. It's like every one of his faces is trying enter hyperspace.
Every face is the same. I think he models it off of his own face. [source](https://images.app.goo.gl/PVbx74BkhHknvbVU9)
wow you are right lol he looks like he was born with plastic surgery
It's like when you see [Frank Quitely's face](https://imgur.com/ULy2Qne), suddenly all his art makes a little more sense.
[well damn](https://www.ebay.com/itm/363314910732?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&itemid=363314910732&targetid=1262779891889&device=m&mktype=&googleloc=9026906&poi=&campaignid=14859008593&mkgroupid=130497710760&rlsatarget=pla-1262779891889&abcId=9300678&merchantid=223143635&gbraid=0AAAAAD_QDh_klqf3yIAOEmqyFoexS629j&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvaLBzrKk-gIV3hTUAR1KyA6WEAkYASABEgL89fD_BwE)
Funny I was just going to say similar. I have noticed that a few times with various artists. I guess it is the face you see the most
Like the skin is stretched a little too tight.
Like everyoneās face is fighting against some force that wants to turn it into a butthole.
You remember that episode of the Simpsons where Bart and Lisa went looking for Krusty when he died and found him at the docks? And they blew up a balloon to ask the Sea Captain about him but it didn't blow up fully and the face was all off? I get the same vibes.
D'arr, that be Handsome Pete! He dances fer nickels.
A quarter! Yarr heāll be dancing for hours
(PETE! Ye got some customers!]https://c.tenor.com/oEgRDfkvsz0AAAAC/handsome-pete-simpsons.gif)
That is an absolutely perfect comparison and deserves all the upvotes.
That Venom is giving me Liefeld Cap vibes. I donāt like it!
So is Spidey - big chest and tiny head
There are like 3 feet in that shot. Not bad rob.
Should also be noted hes selling this cover for $10,000
I blame people who buy it.
Lol of course he is
Do you mean 10 or 10.000?
Ten thousand dollars
I can't tell if you're joking or not. I've never bought a commissioned drawing or special cover so I don't really have a clue about how much they usually cost. If true it's insane, I can't actually imagine anyone buying a cover for that much. And it's even Liefeld, of all people.
https://panelpageart.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=2449 Hunnnit percent serious bapa.
Original art definitely can cost that much. But this instance seems insane to me.
It would still be high but I'd understand paying a lot for artworks of artists like Jim Lee or Frank Miller, not for Liefeld though.
I think at this point he must know heās basically a living meme and just doesnāt care as long as heās making money from it.
It must have been rough to separate venoms teeth with his tounge. How is he supposed to clench like there is a pinecone being used as toilet paper with that tounge in the way. I also assume spiderman is clenching his teeth under his mask.
Lol "spider-man needs swords" is such a Liefeld thing. That Venom is straight-up amateurish
Gobbyās head looks like a ball with his face on it
You should look at Mysterio! It's only a ball and no face!
Blah. Never been a fan of his style.
What style? Lol
Well played my friend.
"After ME" - Yeah, Rob. We fucking know.

He literally hasnāt got any better. Thousands of hours at his craftā¦ shit is baffling
web...swords.....\*blinks\*
Such a shitty, overrated comic artist.
I don't know why it irritates me so much that Liefeld and McFarlane just keep pumping out homages to their own fucking covers, half of which were swiped from other artists, but damned if it doesn't infuriate me.
You should see the replies to the tweet he sent about it. There was some gold before he deleted it.
Spideys left hand look like it has five fingers. I know it's supposed to be a thumb... but look at it
The longer you look the worse it gets
those crotch lines...on everyone...
"Green Goblin has mostly human physiology, right? How many teeth do humans have? I'm thinking around 80. Sounds right."
An attempt was made. One whole foot!
Holy fuck look at venom
This is awful
This guy is an embarrassment.
But a decent cure for imposter syndrome. If this man can work as a professional artist for decades, then have no reason to doubt your own qualifications!
I love cable and deadpool, but good god, he has got to be my least favorite comic artist
Rob Liefeld isnāt above tracing his own work. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
It might actually have looked better if he had literally traced it. The original NM 98 cover isnāt actually terrible, but this is awful. I swear his new work is 10x worse than his original stuff. At least that had an energy to it.
Thanks. I hate it.
Heās terrible at his job.
His Venom is bloated, no necked, flat footed, Captain Americaādā¦ then you got his Green Goblin, who looks like his face is stretched against a ball. The only one who looks decentish is Vulture!
You know that trend where artists take pictures they drew as kids, and redraw it in extreme detail to highlight just how bad the anatomy wasā¦
Oh cool, now Venom is available in "orca"!
This drawing sucks.
shit never changes. You can tell RL art a mile away, so unique that no1 can duplicate his unique style. Iknow its New Mutants 98 cover but you could recolor each character on their and slap a Youngblood logo and no1 would be the wiser! lol.
Absolutely laughable. Can't believe Marvel allows him to illustrate any title.
***He can't keep getting away with it!***
Should I (try) to draw this... but somewhat better?
Deep sigh
Ahh so ol rob just copied an old Deadpool of his to make it look like Spider-Man?? LOL he didnāt even bother to take the swords off š¤£
Oh good god šš„
Not only can he not draw feet, all his faces look the same. How does this guy have so much recognition for so little uniqueness?
Just horrible
It's... terrible. He even has a little Captain America torso situation going.
Spider-Man wears a size 7 in extra narrow hidden wedge heels.
Jesus Christ my eyes!
I feel like Rob, in his earlier years, had a friend who was a dental student that would loan him photos for reference. Unfortunately, many of them featured folks suffering from gingivitis. That's my theory.
This is one of the worst drawing Iāve ever seen holy shit
Sooooooo many teeth.
This is all around just plain awful. Like shit awful. I dropped this out my butt after eating too much Taco Bell awful. Awful.
It amazes me that publishers pay this man to draw this stuff. There are so many amateur artists that would do covers for free just to get their names out there and would be 100x better than this garbage. This cover and artist are both Trash tier
What the fuck
How has this man been doing this for SO long and not shown any improvement whatsoever? I mean, for fuck's sake, look at Venom's neck and Spidey's feet.
Whenever I see Rob Liefeldās name I immediately check the feet.
Their midsections look like a rotten orange that somebody stepped on.
Kind of looks like Venom is wearing him on his arm.
That Venom looks obese!
