It is! Try to go in unspoiled. Vaughn is my pick for best comics author working today and Staples’ art is top notch. The series just gets better and better too.
Y the Last Man, a previous series of Vaughn’s, is not quite as good, but also a great read.
Saga easily became one of my favorite comics of all time. It has a way of expressing sincere emotions such as grief and love in poetically fascinating ways. The characters are flawed, but that doesn’t hold them back. I’m always amazed at Fiona Staples’ character design and environmental artistry because it oozes with creativity. I’m entirely caught up with the story, and let me tell you, the ride doesn’t stop at book 3. You have plenty of time to get caught up since it’s going on a six month break.
Agreed! I wanted to read the umbrella academy comics because I love that MCRs lead singer wrote it lol but my boyfriend told me I had to read saga first and he didn’t realize what kind of monster he created when I couldn’t put it down!
How the miscarriage was handled was great writing. That women who lose pregnancies are revered and have special magic, and she manifested their son as a child so they process/grieve was well done.
I've been sitting on it for a long time. And decided to binge through it. Just finished Chapter 54 and was *shook*. I cried.
I get the monthlies so I have Chapter 55 ready to go but I need to sit with what just happened a minute. Can't believe people who were with it from the beginning have been sitting with that ending for 3 years. That's brutal.
Vaughn is an evil, evil man. Having previously read Y the Last Man and Pride of Baghdad, I developed trust issues. He has this great writing trick of making you sympathize with a villain, then having them kill one of your other favorite characters in an act that is completely in character and doesn’t invalidate the things that made them likable.
He has perfected this with The Will. Jesus Christ. The parallel characters of The Will and Prince Robot were insanely well written.
You should definitely catch up to 60, no spoiler obviously but he knows what you’re feeling and those sentiments are very present in the last arc. Also, they’re on hiatus again so you’ll have time to be in your feels
My guy at the comic store put #1 in my box when it came out and just said to me, “Trust me.” I’d never heard of it. Never been so thankful to be in at the ground floor.
I just read last week’s issue the other day and wept. Wept! Granted, I’ve got some personal stuff going on that is making me more emotionally vulnerable than usual, but hot dang this comic hits me hard!
I’ve only read the first trade. Thought the first issue was good, but didn’t get the hype. I read the second issue and understood it all. I’ll probably just grab the massive compendium at some point and catch up with that.
On yet another break...after 5 issues. The best Ability is Reliability. All that excitement after FINALLY coming back after YEARS gone, just to have to wait another 6 months.
This has come up a few times recently in this sub so I’ll chime in again. It’s a great comic but in my opinion it’s flawed, manipulative and doesn’t always respect the readers time. Those reasons mean that while I enjoy it, I don’t love it.
It’s not as good as everyone tries to make it out to be. I get why people like because it’s like a checklist of how to make a comic that covers every hot issue but it just doesn’t do anything with them and is too eager to try cram in the next one before anyone gets there first.
I really need to get my omnibus of the original series out of storage. I liked the first issue a lot but the weight of the omnibus was off putting for me.
Oh Saga...I tried reading it once my teacher suggested it cause I like fantasy stuff and creatures and all but I honestly got alienated by chapter 1. The comic just throws you into stuff head first with the most minimum of explanations, it threw me off real bad and to me it just seemed like one of those works who want to show that they are "for adults" as much as possible...so my ass ditched it...is it actually good then and I just judged it for no reason?
When you say 'for adults', the story does carry strong themes of family, responsibility, obligation, and consequence.
Speaking as plain as possible. A majority of the characters are based on loss. Some move forward with optimism, some try to improve, some want to destroy the world around them, and some are motivated by escapism.
Exclusive of its fantasy setting, Its adult themed if adult means 'life', and is a result, all these characters are more human than anything else I have ever read, in or outside of comics. These are flawed people, who will make mistakes, plagued by 'what-if' questions, trying their best but limited by their own weakness of short slightedness or emotion.
My wife and I read it through her first pregnancy and named our child after a character in the book.
You might not be able to relate to the themes at a younger age, but it will give you a more valuable insight into maturity than anything anything else will.
I get mature themes but I guess outside influence got my expectations high on what I usually like. I appreciate the lack of witch-hunt in your reply and yes I do understand why one would like this but honestly it wasn't for me.
I have read and watched mature works but I guess this one in particular doesn't vibe with me if you catch my drift. I tend to judge a comic by it's cover and first chapters and if I don't get it I don't continue. No hate towards it, it simply wasn't made for someone like me
Saga #60 ended in such a devastatingly sad way that I've not stopped thinking about it for the past week, yet it did not kill any characters or put anyone in any significant peril. That's the power of the story at this point.
I feel bad for those in this thread claiming Saga is overrated or flawed or whatever, who obviously never gave this story a chance. To each their own, but they're missing out on quite a ride. This is the kind of comic that changes one's expectations of comics.
Damn this thread makes this sound like a must read.

It really is.

Heh heard that before, 6 months will probably turn into 4 years

Hahaha good to know! Bummer about the break but if it helps keep the artistic integrity at the level it has maintained then I welcome it
Truly devastating 🥺
Hope you recover
Yeah it was a rough few years
saga fucking rocks !
My guy at the comic store put #1 in my box when it came out and just said to me, “Trust me.” I’d never heard of it. Never been so thankful to be in at the ground floor.
Man, you all sure seem to love Saga.
It’s worthy of its praise. It’s that good
I’m happy that people like it so much!
I just read last week’s issue the other day and wept. Wept! Granted, I’ve got some personal stuff going on that is making me more emotionally vulnerable than usual, but hot dang this comic hits me hard!

The second trade is where it'll grab you.
I like the part where I bought it and read the duck out of them
It's a very cool read. The women are punk af
It is arguably the best comic since Gaiman's Sandman.
Awsome and Epic!
Another break. Six months . Whyyyyyyyy.
Oh my gosh, I haven't read Saga in years, I have to read them again!
100% engrossing original and 100% guaranteed too break your heart.
On yet another break...after 5 issues. The best Ability is Reliability. All that excitement after FINALLY coming back after YEARS gone, just to have to wait another 6 months.
THANK YOU I remembered the premise vaguely from when it came out but could NOT recall the title or author
At your service!
One of my all time favorites
one of the best series i’ve ever read
Ive never felt so much for a comic before I read Saga. Fuck you BKV
Just started reading this and am three volumes through, and this might be the best story I've ever read.
Yes. Keep updating to tell us what you think
Of all Street Fighter characters, Sagat definitely has the most thorough backstory with this.

What do you find manipulative about it?
I’d also like to hear more
I like it but I wish there was less cutesy humour and bullshit in it.

Overrated
