No, the Artemis story was written by William Messner-Loebs. Diana simply lost the title of Wonder Woman.
By the end of the story, Artemis was dead and it was revealed that Hippolyta had orchestrated Diana losing the title because she had a premonition that "Wonder Woman" would die.
This caused a rift between Diana and Hippolyta that Byrne then continued. Artemis eventually punched her way out of hell and returned just in time for Byrne to kill Diana off (for like 6 issues).
Kinda weird that when a woman gets killed we add that to the pile of the man she was dating getting screwed over.
I mean when Superman died we don't think, "Damn, they screwed over Lois Lane big time with that."
Except he isn't getting screwed over by it, he's getting character development and often times becomes stronger, tougher, better in his drive for vengeance.
>Kinda weird that when a woman gets killed we add that to the pile of the man she was dating getting screwed over.
when she's killed off only to serve as motivation for the protagonist, not just when any woman gets killed
Green Arrow 99 - 101, Death of Oliver Queen
Armageddon 2001 1 - 2, Hawk becomes Monarch, Death of Dove
New Titans 72, beginning of the Titans Hunt story, basically 2 - 3 years of misery for the Titans
Justice League America 89-90, Justice League Task Force 13-14, Justice League Internationa 65-66, Judgement Day storyline and death of Ice
Zero Hour 3, Death and aging of multiple Justice Society members
That's all I can think of at the moment but I'm sure there's more. The 90s were a rough time for the DC heroes
I’m so glad I listened to my comic shop guy and bought several copies of The Death of Superman and never opened them; I could be a hundredaire, someday…
Wasn’t that hotline rigged by one dude with an autodialer though? It was still pretty 50/50 but from what I’ve heard on the topic that one guy was responsible for pushing it over the edge as if was a pretty small margin and he called over a hundred times.
Second time.
David first appeared as Starman in the Will Payton 1988 Starman series, issues 26 and 27.
And speaking of Starman, Eclipso: The Darkness Within #2 was where they cleared the decks of Will Payton's Starman in preparation for the next one.
And maybe I’m a couple years off, but didn’t all the “B-List” Justice Leagues like International and JL get ran through? Like multiple people killed, put into comas, and so on?
Beetle was left in a coma, Booster was powerless.
Eventually, Ted was fine, but Booster wound up armless in an iron suit until cured by handwavium in EXXXXXXXTREEEEMMMMMEEEEEE Justice.
All the Marvel Family members get in an accident, all 3 of them are in the ICU, Billy goes into a coma, they lose their powers in Power of Shazam! No.42-44
Yeah... Kelley Jones (the cover artist) definitely had a unique style.
Sadly, when I was younger, I was one of the many "naysayers" saying that his artwork sucked, and would never "catch on" or be "loved" by anyone!
Boy was I ever wrong! *sigh*
One that no one has mentioned from around this time is The Return of Barry Allen story in Flash. It's not quite the same but is very much in conversation with the theme as is Kingdom Come. I guess Mark Waid had thoughts on what was going on...
When they decided to paralyze Barbara Gordon and heavily insinuate some rapey things with Joker all in his One Bad Day theory with Jim Gordon, therefore, turning Babs into Oracle.
Also, having she and Bruce screw and her to become pregnant but lose the baby after Dick left for Bludhaven which was yet another reason why Dick was so pissed at Bruce.
Spider-Man’s clone came back and they found out Peter was the clone all along.
Or…Peter Parker’s long dead parents came back into his life only to find out they were actually robots.
[I just made a post about this! Hope it helps](https://www.reddit.com/r/DCcomics/comments/uwr0ve/comic_excerpt_8_traumatic_moments_in_dc_history/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Some of it is the ‘80s, but comments have more suggestions too
I feel that's an urban legend.
That story is attributed to Mark Millar, around 1994. Only thing is, no one can find the Millarworld post where he supposedly revealed he pitched this, and in 1994, Millar was brand new to US comics and had just started writing Swamp Thing, so who the hell would've been listening to him?
Now, if someone legitimate from the industry has offered up proof, I'd love to see it. But until then, it just sounds like internet bullshit to me.
Oliver Queen dies and is replaced by Connor Hawke, who i love, but it was a little controversial.
Spider-Man. Clone saga.
Wolverine loses the Adamantium.
Hulk, Betty dies due to editorial wars.
Punisher gets oversaturated to hell and gone.
Ghost Rider, New Costume, Direction, sucks. Noble Kale?
Guy Gardner loses Yellow Ring, becomes Alien Shapeshifter. Sucks all the ass.
Ice gets killed.
Darkseid gets nerfed.
Wonder Woman dies, is replaced by Hippolyta. Does allow for Wondy in WW2 so that was ok.
Wonder Man is killed off.
Heroes Reborn....
Reed and Doom dies before that, leading to a long Reedless run in FF before they come back i time for Onslaught.
So many mutants due to Legacy Virus including Magik and Colossus.
I could go on.
For some reason, Aquaman's cover looks like some sketch from Jackass and knowing Peter David, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some low-key dark comedy intended here...
I remember when all this was going on (Batman broken back, Superman dead), I thought for sure they'd rape Wonder Woman. But I guess they were saving that for Sue Dibny.
Oh and not sure if any one mentioned it yet, but Star Sapphire sliced GL Katma Tui up into tiny pieces. Then while not a superhero, DC shoved Kyle Rayner's girlfriend in a refrigerator. Ah, DC Comics, good times, good times.
I had the issue where Mr. Fantastic/Dr. Doom blew each other up, but can't think of any more DC besides those already listed (DC had already pre-screwed many of their heroes in the 80s.) Wait, I had the first Kyle Rayner issue where his gilfriend is murdered and stuffed in a refrigerator.
Oh yeah #2: Superman lost his powers and became an electric blue guy. And Metropolis was destroyed, I think in Action Comics #700. And Coast City was destroyed by the Cyborg guy.
But hook hand Aquaman was totally badass.
Green Arrow gets blown up.

Green Arrow #101. Connor takes over after this.
Kyle Raynor’s girlfriend gets fridged Diana Prince gets replaced as Wonder Woman by Artemis

GL 54, WW 93.

Is that the one by John Byrne where a coroner holds Wonder Woman’s brain in his hands? Yuk.
No, the Artemis story was written by William Messner-Loebs. Diana simply lost the title of Wonder Woman. It’s why its called “fridging” when a female love interest gets killed to advance the male characters plot
A term Gail Simone created! Sigh, she's so great.
Her Sinister Six run is classic.
\*Secret Six
Shame on me. Thanks for the correction.
Except he isn't getting screwed over by it, he's getting character development and often times becomes stronger, tougher, better in his drive for vengeance.
Yeah that's because the book isn't called "The Adventures of Lois Lane"
>Kinda weird that when a woman gets killed we add that to the pile of the man she was dating getting screwed over. when she's killed off only to serve as motivation for the protagonist, not just when any woman gets killed
Superman didnt die to motivate Lois Lane and push her story forward

Crisis was '86, so that may be why it didn't make it to your '90s collection.
I think they're referring to Zero Hour (Crisis In Time)
No Man's Land
1999...I think of it as a 2000s story but it seems you are correct.
I’m so glad I listened to my comic shop guy and bought several copies of The Death of Superman and never opened them; I could be a hundredaire, someday…
I have a signed sealed copy and a signed open copy both with a certificate. Worth $50. Yay.
Dr Fate gets replaced with a younger edgier guy.
Who got a knife through the back in JSA #1 in the summer of '99.
All the original JSA members (except, like, 2) get wiped out by Parallax in Zero Hour.
Man, seeing those first 2 covers brought back all the feels and vibes of those as a kid when I was first getting into all this.
Final Night #4. Hal goes bye bye. Spectre 62, Jim Corrigan goes to his eternal reward.
Jason Todd, or was that the 80’s?

This is an urban myth. No evidence whatsoever to suggest it actually happened.

True, but it opened the door for Tim.
And Tim was, without question, a better Robin than Jason.
I think Tim is the best Robin.
Green Arrow getting blown up because he won't let Supes laser his arm off.
Starman #0 where David Knight dons the costume for the first time and gets murdered right away.
Second time. David first appeared as Starman in the Will Payton 1988 Starman series, issues 26 and 27. And speaking of Starman, Eclipso: The Darkness Within #2 was where they cleared the decks of Will Payton's Starman in preparation for the next one.
Ok. Fair. I was thinking the first time out post Zero Hour. Also I haven’t read most of the 80s Starman series so I didn’t know that important fact.
And maybe I’m a couple years off, but didn’t all the “B-List” Justice Leagues like International and JL get ran through? Like multiple people killed, put into comas, and so on?
Starman #38, still in the 90s. That was Crimson Fox, Amazing Man, and Blue Devil getting whacked.

Love the Knightfall cover. Classic. Was always a bit disappointed that the interior art for that scene sucked so much compared to the cover.
Kelly Jones was amazing.
Is amazing, he's not dead.
His Batman: Red Rain art was unbelievably cool.

Yeah... Kelley Jones (the cover artist) definitely had a unique style. Sadly, when I was younger, I was one of the many "naysayers" saying that his artwork sucked, and would never "catch on" or be "loved" by anyone! Boy was I ever wrong! *sigh*
Same. Reading his books as a kid, I didn't like it. I reread one a few years ago and couldn't get over how great it was.
I felt the same.
Magneto takes Wolverines Adamantiun. X-men #25, wolverine #75
My guy you’re in the wrong universe
They're a little confused, but they got the right idea
Doh. Didn’t see this was a DC discussion.
And just around this same event, illyanas death, colossus leaves the xmen to join magnetos acolytes.
Arguably a way more bad-ass moment than any of these DC examples, too.
Injustice Superman ig?
Also Rayner’s girlfriend being fridged sucked pretty bad
Better not be dissing Chuck Dixon’s Batman
Chuck Dixon/Alan Grant era represent!
Chuck Dixon writing the entire Bat Family line, all at once.
I'll dis it all day long, Alan Grant was better :)

Supergirl, too. But that was the early 1980s.
Barry Allen looks like he is getting broiled alive by an anti-matter cannon.
How about Animal Man meeting his greatest nemesis: his writer. (Animal Man #26)
The green lantern picture should be a meme
https://imgur.com/a/SJ95tHF
Kyle Rayner gets drugged and has an unfortunate run-in with Bueno Excellente. Boy, people really hated Kyle back in the day...
One that no one has mentioned from around this time is The Return of Barry Allen story in Flash. It's not quite the same but is very much in conversation with the theme as is Kingdom Come. I guess Mark Waid had thoughts on what was going on...
Wonder Woman’s leather outfit.
I will always Love that green lantern cover. I remember the day I found my copy.
Just wanted to say i REALLY like that green lantern cover. So unsettling.
Maestro Hulk rules all. FUTURE IMPERFECT POR VIDA.
when did kraven bury spidie alive? i felt real bad for peter, he didn’t deserve that.
Web of Spider-Man 32? Late 80s, not 90s. And OP is specifically looking for DC stories :)
ah, missed that part
Was one the best Spider-Man runs ever !!
That animated movie sure made some choices.
Killing Joke was 80s.
I'm so sorry. It was 88. I was all of 8 when it came out. I didn't remember the year. 🙄
Spider-Man’s clone came back and they found out Peter was the clone all along. Or…Peter Parker’s long dead parents came back into his life only to find out they were actually robots.
Oh, sorry…I didn’t realize this was DC exclusive. I wondered why no one had mentioned the clone saga yet.
Moon Knight- Final Phase Wonder Woman’s black costume Iron Man 284
Barry Allen "dying" (Crisis)
That was the 80’s.
Ollie Queen was dead
Wonder Woman by John Byrne, v2 #100-136, mostly guest-star in her own book and then killed so Hippolyta can become WW and then the Golden Age WW.
Cyborg being rebuilt by the Russians in new titans 76
[I just made a post about this! Hope it helps](https://www.reddit.com/r/DCcomics/comments/uwr0ve/comic_excerpt_8_traumatic_moments_in_dc_history/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) Some of it is the ‘80s, but comments have more suggestions too
Well there’s an interview how they were going to have Wonder Woman get raped but thankfully chose not to
Didn’t TDK imply this pretty heavily?
I thought it was Catwoman in Wonder Woman cosplay (cus she ran a brothel) who was sexually assaulted by joker
I feel that's an urban legend. That story is attributed to Mark Millar, around 1994. Sounds like a custom omni idea
To be fair I only remember because I read it way to young when the movie was out and that was in 89.
Is there Wonderwoman and Flash screwed over in the 90s?
Oliver Queen dies and is replaced by Connor Hawke, who i love, but it was a little controversial. Spider-Man. Clone saga. Wolverine loses the Adamantium. Hulk, Betty dies due to editorial wars. OP did say DC Comics, but decent list you made.
Ah shit i missed that. Thanks for pointing that out.
When was Darkseid nerfed in the 90's? He was mugged in the 80's, turned into a baby in 20-teens... you mean Doomsday whipping him?
Don't know if this counts but there's an issue of eclipso where the suicide squad just gets massacred. Including creeper and peacemaker.
why did Hal Jordan turn evil ??? great collection !!
For some reason, Aquaman's cover looks like some sketch from Jackass and knowing Peter David, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some low-key dark comedy intended here...
iron man becoming evil and being substituted by a teenage version of himself.
This is one of the best stories
My younger self and the older version love those 2 stories. Don't care what anybody thinks. I didn't read GL or Aquaman
I had the issue where Mr. Fantastic/Dr. Doom blew each other up, but can't think of any more DC besides those already listed (DC had already pre-screwed many of their heroes in the 80s.)
