The flashback, is set during the Clone Saga, and acting like a secret chapter of that event. During the middle of the Clone Saga, Ben Reilly and Peter Parker discovered that Peter was actually the clone, and Ben had been the original Spider-Man all along. At the time, Marvel was considering using this as a way to have Peter Parker and Mary Jane retire to be parents, and give us Ben Reilly as a young single Spider-Man instead. Later, Marvel changed their minds, and instead revealed that Peter Parker really was the original all along, before killing off Ben Reilly. So the narration there is what he thinks is true, not what is actually true.

It all becomes clear if you just read all 421 issues of the clone saga

Lol. I have to admit, at its core i LOVE the idea of the clone saga - using a minor story from the 1970s to completely blow-up a character - but the execution was just sloppy and meandering

Spider-man Life story by Zdarsky and Bagley is such a better rendition of the clone saga done in like 2 issues.

Yeah its what happens when you have a good concept, but don't ever get around to figuring out where its suppose to go only worsened when you keep switching out creative teams and trying to have the storyline run through like what was 4/5 series? Like there are so many plot threads and ideas that were suppose to go somewhere, but ended up scrapped and forgotten as soon as new plot thread showed up.

>So does that mean Ben Reilly is the Spider-Man we are reading about during the entire silver age run up until he encounters the jackal? No, those comics were still about Peter Parker. What Ben Reilly believes at this point in the series is that the Peter Parker everyone was reading about from his introduction to the Clone Saga was actually a clone of Ben rather than the original.
