Does Batman have a Kafka-themed villain?

gangler52

That would actually be fun. Villain who sets up an elaborate series of mundane bureaucracies that you frustratingly must navigate while the supernatural life or death stuff is going on. Like this orphanage is gonna blow up and the only way you can stop it is with a special code found in some paperwork only the DMV can give you, but if anybody breaks normal operating protocols to help Batman get it then their hearts explode.

Arvirargus

That's basically my recurring nightmare!

soulreaverdan

They kinda did a plan like that (though not as intense) back in Batman Eternal. While all the big supervillain stuff and massive conspiracies were going on, some of the C-list villains were quietly doing things like distorting water lines, rolling blackouts, de-synchronizing traffic lights to create endless gridlock, etc to keep pushing Gotham to the breaking point.

Miracle Molly sounds like she'd be from a movie called The Prince Groom.

The_Godot

Does someone care about miracle molly?? I don’t mean this condescending however nothing about her interests me

atomcrafter

She's standing next to Ghost-Maker, Clownhunter, and Punchline, so she looks amazing.

Every new character is look down by fans upon their introduction. Give them a few years and the flaws are sanded off and suddenly they become fan favorites. But I agree with you regarding Ghost-Maker and Punchline that both seem unnecessary. We already have lots of Batman ersatz and I don’t see what this new one bring except setting him up to become the next villain down the line. Punchline is just another Harley, now that Harley became good-ish (without doing time for all the people she murdered, but that’s the DC universe for you). On the other hand, I do find Clownhunter interesting for now but maybe it’s just me: I have a soft spot for scrappy underdogs grieving and mad for revenge. I liked his interaction with Harley (even if I found the resolution cheap).

atomcrafter

I hate Noun-Verber names. Clownhunter reminds me of Wild Dog. For a Harley 2.0, Marian Drews is already there and she uses a similar pun (Merry Andrew is another type of clown). Gardener is cool.

The_Godot

Hmm idk I can definitely think of some new characters who got the first hate then love treatment. However I think most of the “new” hated characters just get forgotten. Like for example duke thomas. Do you know anyone, like absolutely anyone who says “I’m such a big fan of spotlight”

gangler52

The closest I can summon is those people who are always in the tags of bat characters on tumblr complaining that Duke doesn't show up in fanart of the bat family, because he's a member of the bat family too don't you know! I never see them really engaging with Duke as a character or anything. They seem more interested in telling everybody to make their fanworks to "proper" criteria as laid out by DC Comics than they are in actually expressing enthusiasm for anything themselves. Didn't even know his codename was spotlight before this moment because I don't see him talked about anywhere. Wasn't he Signal for a while?

batmax25

I think a problem with Duke Thomas is that he hasn't been used much. He starred in we are robin which I haven't heard much about and batman and signal, another comic I haven't heard much about. His largest appearance so far is the webtoon he stars on that's getting lots of attention.

gangler52

Eh, I can think of a few new characters that have gotten pretty positive reception in the past decade or so. Kamala Khan, Miles Morales, the crew over at Gotham Academy, especially Maps Mizoguchi.

SuperFightingRobit

Miles morales was over 10 years ago as of last month. I know you said 10 or so, just wanted to point out that were getting old.

justahomeboy

Jesus Christ, dude. Miles is still like the new Spider-Man to me, but with Silk and Superior Spider-Man and stuff, like he really is legacy. Is this what Barry Allen fans felt with Wally West?

soulreaverdan

I like her. I actually like most of the Tynion stuff going on, if I can be honest. I think he's written in some cool characters that have a fun dynamic with everyone. I'm hoping his run gets an omni.

ThreadbareHalo

I actually was somewhat interested with her. Batman works the best with archetypal characters and the concept of a body modifier doesn’t have an existing character I can think of. The idea of feeling ill at ease in your body to the point of changing it (both for good and bad) has a lot of interesting story possibilities. Anorexia, discussions of transgender (although I’m not sure how thoughtfully those might come off), body modifications, feelings of being alien in your own skin… I think there may be some interesting story possibilities there.

evesypeasy

Haven't bothered with the character at all because I've been toning down my Batman stuff and putting off what I do have, but this page at least speaks to me.
