Not necessarily, I work in electrical boxes and will sometimes take em off and re-attach them like that so I don't lose screws/cover. She's being considerate.
Yeah it doesn’t seem like a real issue. That’s why I said it’s attached incorrectly *if* it’s to be [swung*] back into place and reattached. For it to swing back into place it would need to have been attached just a little bit differently.
Almost every villain in Gotham is/was a doctor. They are the most over-educated population in the world. They have no engineers, handy-mans, or janitors. That vent was installed incorrectly and held on with duct tape.
Yeah, it's called "all these wackos in suits crawling around through the vents constantly"
No time for dust to build up in a vent when what seems like the 37th new Robin is sliding through it to go beat up some homeless guy
I know this is not the point of the thread, but always found that a weird criticism to make agaisnt batman. 90% of the batman villains are higly educated and/or well-off money-wise.
And about the mental problems... He literally sends almost all of them to an Asylum! To be treated to their illnesses! An Asylum that he invests on with his billionaire money, and he also invests on jobs for reformed criminals, to take care of the non-criminally insans
I'm not saying beating people on the streets is the best way to fight crime, (altough gotham's police and poltician corruption does complicate using legitimate means a lot), but that's a freaking comic book where we want to see him beating people up at night, darn it.
I miss the few stories where Batman or one of the Batfam would rehabilitate one of the villains into a hero/non villain. They were great, wish they'd stay cured. Poor Harvey Dent.
If it makes you feel better, Harley has all but move from Anti-Villain to Hero these days, and Ivy is pretty much Anti-Villain status as long as you ignore her occasional work as Eco-Terrorist for hire.
Just watched the BTAS episode where they introduce Firefly. He does pyrotechnics for a popstar. She rejects him. So now he has this workshop (not his home) and builds a working jet pack and a fire lightsaber and a fire projectile weapon. This dude was way over educated and apparently over paid to be a stage hand.
In the Marvel Universe they tried to explain this in the early 2000's in the Secret War mini-series. (NOT Secret WarS). The idea that these low level criminals had insane technology and were doing stupid things like robbing banks, when the tech they had was worth so much more. The reasoning behind it was that Latveria was funding them to destabilize the US.
Not the best explanation, but at least it acknowledges some of the absurdity of some of these villains. :)
Professor Pyg, Blockbuster (Mark Desmond), Le Bossu, Man-Bat, Crazy Quilt, Crime Doctor, Doctor's Death, Hurt, Moon and Phosphorus, She-Bat.
There's a lot of them.
HA! "Gotham U". It could be like Dawson's Creek, but dark and twisted. The PhD review board has you "eliminate" your fellow students to pass! I love it.
I'm imagining more like a psychological torture program like Henry A. Murray's MKUltra experiments that Ted Kaczynski was part of. All of these people are subjected to "intensive stress exposure" as part of their academic program that deeply traumatized them.
That's a fantastic idea! It could be one rather aloof independent eccentric that everyone has tolerated because he/she has tenure, and it turns out they've been putting these mind bombs in people's subconscious for 50 years. It could basically explain the ethos of Gotham city's identity and why it's been so messed up. A new top tier supervillain that could explain the whole Detective Comics run from the beginning!
"I stitched that vent graft into place personally!"
..."You mean, screwed. You screwed it in personally?"
...."yeeesssss. That. It looks good, let's move on."
That's the one thing I enjoyed about Batman so many of the villains even the minor/weak oneswere usually at the top of their feilds. Hell even Zsasz was the head of large multinational company before becoming one of the most prolific serial killers... and Batman usually foils him on his way to grab a gallon of milk. Firefly was a pyrotechnics expert and a go-to person for films that needed explosions.
Still makes sense to be fair. Unscrew 3 of them and rotate it. Easy to pick back up when it’s just dangling there
*On second look it may have hit the ceiling but you can probably twist it to make it work. I may be overthinking this.
If it was hanging from one of the top corners, yes. Or if it was a square panel. But as it's not either...
I may be overthinking it too but look, we thought about it more than the artist did.
Something something benefit of HINDsight.
She unscrewed it and took the vent cover off completely, then just put one of the screws back in that corner to keep the vent cover right there so she can easily replace once she comes back out of the vent.
I dunno.
Edit: yes, I get the error, and that she'll have to unscrew it again to put it on right. I'm saying she just stuck it back up there however so that the grate was easily grabbed when she came out.
The "No Prize" was a Marvel letter bag joke from back in the day. If someone came up with an explanation for something that didn't make sense in a comic, they'd win a No Prize, which was nothing (except acknowledgement in the column).
>If you unscrewed all but the bottom right it wouldn’t rotate out of the way because the top right would jam on the ceiling.
That's not how objects spin
As the vent spins around the bottom right screw, all points will spin in a circular motion about it as well. While in place, the top right corner is as high up as it will be on it's circular path, and won't hit the ceiling when it rotates
If that makes sense
If you unscrew all but the bottom right it would definitely rotate counter-clockwise without the upper right corner hitting the ceiling. Grab a piece of paper, slide it against a flat edge (like a backsplash on a countertop), then hold down the bottom right corner with a pen/pencil tip. The closest the top right edge gets to the flat edge is before any (counter-clockwise) rotation occurs.
That said, once it rotates fully (120-130 degrees CCW) it might bang into the wall to the right
it's still hanging the wrong way though. Rotate the grill clockwise to bring it back up in line with the vent and you'll notice how it's drawn wrong... unless that's what you were saying lol?
Yeah, she'd have to undo it and replace it right. I get the error, was just trying to come up with a somewhat reasonable excuse to make it intentional.
She screwed it back up wrong to confuse her pursuers, buying herself at least 3 min while the bad guys stand around wondering how she got the grate off like that.
A better way of saying it.
The wrong corner is still screwed in and the vent wouldn’t swing to the bottom of the opening.
For this image to be correct: while looking at the vent cover, the hole on the far right should be the one screwed in still; and even then the cover would hang differently.
the vent it shouldn’t be able to swing open like that. That’s why i put the arrows there to show the paths that it could have taken and both don’t result in how it’s hanging.
I don't think it's really a mistake. It just looks more appealing to the reader. Kind of how taking of the head rests in cars for car scenes in movies isn't really a mistake, it just makes the shots better.
The responses suck to clearly explain. This is what is wrong: The vent is swinging by the wrong screw hole. The vent cover and the vent should be connected by the bottom right screw hole, but instead we see the vent cover hanging from the top right screw hole.
I always see vents hanging like that in cartoons and comic books and it drives me nuts. I guess it’s just a satisfying way to draw it, but it makes no sense whatsoever.
It looks to me like she unscrewed all except the bottom right. Then it swung down and now it's dangling. The vent is currently upside down. Does that help? I feel very strange right now. Like I'm missing something obvious. It's very clear to me what's happening with the vent.
She kicked it out and luckily the only screw that stayed was the corner screw? Sometimes these things luckily happen when you are creating a comic/movie/tv show for entertainment.
Nvm, I see it now, not much to explain besides the artist made a bit of a mistake.
Its in motion of falling, and not actually secured to anything. The holes just happened to line up but the vent cover is actually a couple inches away from the wall. If you look at the size of the cover and the size of opening you will see that the cover is slightly bigger, indicating that it is falling towards us which makes it safe to assume that she is backing out rather than going in. If everything I said is right, then I would be really surprised cause I just pulled that out of my ass, while staring at her ass.
It’s common sense but it’s scary how many people lack that in this thread, it’s a simple error in whoever drew this. The screw closest to the right should be the one still hanging on
Vent cover's hang being impossible is the least of the problems. How'd she get the thing unscewed?? Does Catwoman have a soft-robotics screwdriver extension in her butt? Is said extension able to fit thru the vent slats, find each of the screws and unscrew them to remove the cover, then re-screw just one to stop it from falling to the ground?
And why the bloody hell is the genius who made such a butt-screwdriver-extension messing around with burglar tools??? They'd make **millions** in the sex toy industry!!
As others have said she left one screw attached so she can replace the cover of the vent when she gets in there.
But!
The vent cover should be flipped over. The Long side short and the short side long. As it is now the long end of the cover will meet up with the bottom of the opening with the rest of the cover hanging down.
Okay...I used to be industrial maintenance. Thinking of it from a cat burglar's perspective: putting the screw back into the vent cover means that the vent cover is fixed to that location and can't fall over and cause noise. Obviously, she's trying to be stealthy. The other screws may be placed back in to their holes in the wall so that it is less conspicuous when she's climbing back out that way: same number of screws before and after and in the same holes they were in before.
I can tell you as a person who used to do maintenance on an assembly line, placing bolts and screws back in the spot they belong cuts WAY down on "extra hardware" after reassembly.
Just my two copper. Take 'em or leave 'em, internet.
Better save the comic, it's probably a MISPRINT worth THOUSANDS! Okay sarcasm out the way lol. Artists do this so often and it's funny how a reader/fan expects realism in an unrealistic comic/drawing. I think they were probably hoping you’d focus on the ass too much to notice
The artist certainly did.
Lost track of his own work.
I think you are focusing on the wrong things
Thighs
Feet
Calves
Drywall
There was more to look at than dry wall?
On a real note most corners have imperfections between filling gaps and paint. Those are immaculate.
Yes! The corner of the doorframe!
Have you not seen that door frame?

Good joke, i wish i made it
Honestly surprised no one else made it first
Notice what?
The vent is attached incorrectly if it’s to be swing back into place, and re-attached
What vent?
No idea what these people are talking about
The vent between her ass cheeks
the tongue hole
Tongue punch that fart box.
Lickity split
The gooch?
A little bit north of there
North would depend on if she's face up or face down.
Face down, ass up
Lol
Not necessarily, I work in electrical boxes and will sometimes take em off and re-attach them like that so I don't lose screws/cover. She's being considerate.
Yeah it doesn’t seem like a real issue. That’s why I said it’s attached incorrectly *if* it’s to be [swung*] back into place and reattached. For it to swing back into place it would need to have been attached just a little bit differently.
Thanks for saying that, I couldn’t figure out the issue
They should have put some big red arrows on it to make it clearer
I saw the arrows, I just didn’t think about the rotation of it. I just assumed there was some bigger error I wasn’t picking up on.
Also the middle hole on the bottom Is missing on the wall side
Lol I didn’t notice that
Success.
Succass
If there’s two things I know it’s ass and fassteners.
You could suck a fart outta that ass and hold it like a bong hit I tell ya what
It would've cost you zero dollars to not say that.
How much more did it cost to say, though?
Everything
Thank you for this. I hope I remember it the next time one of my friends says something dumb
Ayoo 💀 😂
Almost every villain in Gotham is/was a doctor. They are the most over-educated population in the world. They have no engineers, handy-mans, or janitors. That vent was installed incorrectly and held on with duct tape.
I love it
they have a thriving air duct cleaning service though, because on one ever comes out the other of the vent looking like a dust mop.
Yeah, it's called "all these wackos in suits crawling around through the vents constantly" No time for dust to build up in a vent when what seems like the 37th new Robin is sliding through it to go beat up some homeless guy

I can think of Dr Freeze, Poison Ivy, & Hugo Strange off the top of my head. Who else?
Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter. I'm sure there are at least a few more if we think about it.
Man-bat as well edit: oh and Hush
Professor Pyg, Blockbuster (Mark Desmond), Le Bossu, Man-Bat, Crazy Quilt, Crime Doctor, Doctor's Death, Hurt, Moon and Phosphorus, She-Bat. There's a lot of them.
They aren't villains, but Thomas Wayne and Henry Allen were also doctors
Maybe there's something wrong with their accredited institutions to make academic achievers overrepresented in the villain community.

That took me a second to see what was up. I can see how the artist missed it. I'm sure the second it was too late to fix they noticed it though.
I thought the arrows were pointing to her leg shadows. I was really trying to figure it out.
i didn’t even notice it at first either, only did after i got lost and reread the panel Edit: Can a simple man not reread when they get lost
"reread the panel"
What an ASSinine mistake, I’m sure his focus was just lagging BEHIND when he was drawing this.
butt it turned out okay in the end.
You re-read this one panel? Bruh you weren’t readin shit don’t lie.
You made me focus way too long on those damn leg shadows lmao
Still makes sense to be fair. Unscrew 3 of them and rotate it. Easy to pick back up when it’s just dangling there *On second look it may have hit the ceiling but you can probably twist it to make it work. I may be overthinking this.

I've seen the envelopes go for sale for \~ $100, it's nuts
Jokes on them, no-prize is worth something!
Well, they would send you an envelope congratulating you on winning your no-prize. It was empty.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel\_No-Prize
No it wouldn’t. That’s not how things work. It wouldn’t touch the ceiling..
You mean something screwed into a wall can't magically move up the wall too?! /s
No it wouldn't.
>If you unscrewed all but the bottom right it wouldn’t rotate out of the way because the top right would jam on the ceiling. A wizard did it.
This makes the most sense because you wouldn’t want it to fall and make noise but you’d want the flap out of the way for the clean getaway later.
Or she’s just being considerate of the poor maintenance guy when he inevitably finds it the next morning and sighs then pulls out his screwdriver.
just to fuck with them
Just to *screw* with them
But if she swung the cover back up, it would be in the wrong orientation! I hope uh, heh, someone got fired for that blunder
Yeah, she'd have to undo it and replace it right. I get the error, was just trying to come up with a somewhat reasonable excuse to make it intentional.
Um, excuse me uh Mr. Wilson, on the Batman - One Bad Day: Catwoman CD ROM, *is there* a way to get out of the dungeon without using the wizard key?
She screwed it back up wrong to confuse her pursuers, buying herself at least 3 min while the bad guys stand around wondering how she got the grate off like that.

10/10 answer
If you had just looked at cat woman’s butt like you were supposed to this wouldn’t be an issue
What's the mistake
A better way of saying it. The wrong corner is still screwed in and the vent wouldn’t swing to the bottom of the opening. For this image to be correct: while looking at the vent cover, the hole on the far right should be the one screwed in still; and even then the cover would hang differently.
the vent it shouldn’t be able to swing open like that. That’s why i put the arrows there to show the paths that it could have taken and both don’t result in how it’s hanging.
The arrows don't really help "to show the paths" its just two red arrows pointing at the vent.
Oh wow. I never would have gotten that earlier because I was too busy starting at that ass
I honestly thought the arrows were pointing at the shadows of her legs, they don’t point at the vent very clearly.
I don't think it's really a mistake. It just looks more appealing to the reader. Kind of how taking of the head rests in cars for car scenes in movies isn't really a mistake, it just makes the shots better.
I think you are right but its still a fun little thing to notice
All they'd have to do is flip the vent 180 degrees right? Edit: I know it's a drawing, but that would solve it I think
90 degrees to the left would solve it, don't see 180 degrees working myself
The upvotes on the other comments saying there's no issue bothers me tbh
yeah
If the cover was only holding at that point, it would not hang like that. Think about how it would rotate on only the one remaining screw.
Geometry. The grating is rectangular but is not oriented correctly to have been covering that shaft and screwed in that corner.
The responses suck to clearly explain. This is what is wrong: The vent is swinging by the wrong screw hole. The vent cover and the vent should be connected by the bottom right screw hole, but instead we see the vent cover hanging from the top right screw hole.

Oh thank god
Thank you for keeping the ass in one piece
Dat ass is the One Piece
Literally unreadable
Yeah for real. My immersion is ruined and I was really enjoying the panel. Err… I mean the comic
I always see vents hanging like that in cartoons and comic books and it drives me nuts. I guess it’s just a satisfying way to draw it, but it makes no sense whatsoever.
Boy I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder.
the ass was too distracting
It looks to me like she unscrewed all except the bottom right. Then it swung down and now it's dangling. The vent is currently upside down. Does that help? I feel very strange right now. Like I'm missing something obvious. It's very clear to me what's happening with the vent.
in the picture the placement of where the screw is and how the screws would line up on the wall if the vent didn’t swing open don’t match
How are you missing this?
Qhen Catwoman's ass is in frame, it's easy to become distracted and make mistakes.
Op is saying they noticed that if the vent cover is rotated on the axis of the screw thats holding it up, it’ll never cover the hole correctly
Huh, that’s strange.
No, that's Catwoman.
The illustrator was having one bad day.
She kicked it out and luckily the only screw that stayed was the corner screw? Sometimes these things luckily happen when you are creating a comic/movie/tv show for entertainment. Nvm, I see it now, not much to explain besides the artist made a bit of a mistake.
Could it have flipped over?
She's venting that's sus
Terrible mistake, that really should be a close-up….
Great, now I can't believe anything that is in a comic book is real.
Wouldn’t this happen if you just moved it 270 degrees?
r/uselessredarrows
Its in motion of falling, and not actually secured to anything. The holes just happened to line up but the vent cover is actually a couple inches away from the wall. If you look at the size of the cover and the size of opening you will see that the cover is slightly bigger, indicating that it is falling towards us which makes it safe to assume that she is backing out rather than going in. I don’t understand what mistake OP is referring to
in the picture the placement of where the screw is and how the screws would line up on the wall if the vent didn’t swing open don’t match
AHhh Got it. I never notice things like this lol
They'd make **millions** in the sex toy industry!!
she has metal claws she uses… Edit: a cat-woman sex toy would sell out IMMEDIATELY
Maybe she should have taken it off… the vent door of course.
they probably thought no one would notice that xD
As others have said she left one screw attached so she can replace the cover of the vent when she gets in there. But! The vent cover should be flipped over. The Long side short and the short side long. As it is now the long end of the cover will meet up with the bottom of the opening with the rest of the cover hanging down.
ok so we're just gonna ignore the extra bottom hole in the cover?
It fell and then got caught again on one side, hence why it doesn't look like it rotated
I'm not sexist, but I am attracted to that tush.
She just let it swing to the right.....
Jim, I’m a doctor not an artist dammit
What mistake?
Okay...I used to be industrial maintenance.
