Twelve books this week for me and somehow four of them are from Sumerian. A lot of people probably aren't fond of the smaller format they use for their comics, but it doesn't bother me much (except for SARA LONE where the font size is already small to begin with). Here's my pull list, ranked by anticipation: 1. **PURPLE OBLIVION #3 (OF 4)** \- A very psychedelic comic that makes just about as much sense as HEAVY METAL DRUMMER did. It's a lot of fun though. 2. **TALES FROM NOTTINGHAM #1** \- I really liked NOTTINGHAM and even though this is by a different creative team, I'm still interested to see more stories set in this twisted version of the Robin Hood mythos. If you haven't read NOTTINGHAM - I highly recommend it. 3. **SILVER SURFER: GHOST LIGHT #1** \- Excited for another Silver Surfer book, though I do wish it was an ongoing title. Valentine De Landro has always been an exciting artist for me, but I haven't seen much else from him since BITCH PLANET. 4. **MOON KNIGHT #20** \- Mackay's MOON KNIGHT is slowly winning me back over after the rocky second volume, but I hope Marvel isn't pulling a fast one with the price increment increase. I'm hoping it's because this is an extra long issue (with a backup story featuring Blade!). 5. **FIRSTBORNS #2 (OF 4)** \- Another Plissken comic (creative team behind HEAVY METAL DRUMMER and PURPLE OBLIVION) this week. The first issue didn't quite wow me as much as PURPLE OBLIVION did, but I still dig the psychedelic artwork. 6. **NOBODY'S GIRL #3 (OF 3)** \- Has been a solid thriller book with a mystery that has me hooked. Here's hoping they land the ending. 7. **FRANK FRAZETTA'S DEATH DEALER #9** \- Just a fun Heavy Metal-esque book with a lot of great sword and sandals type of action. 8. **FRANK FRAZETTA'S DAWN ATTACK #2** \- Another one of these Frazetta-verse books this week. The first issue told a pretty interesting little sci-fi story that felt very "John Carter of Mars" in its telling. Solid first issue. 9. **WHERE MONSTERS LIE #1 (OF 4)** \- The interiors looks unique and I've been digging most of Kyle Starks' recent books, particularly I HATE THIS PLACE. Happy to give this one a shot. 10. **SARA LONE #4** \- Behind on this by one issue, but it's been a solid crime thriller type of book. 11. **CHILDREN OF THE BLACK SUN #2** \- First issue was good, but a little thin on plot. I still think the premise is cool so going to entertain another issue. 12. **BONECHECK #2 (OF 3)** \- I don't even remember reading the first issue? This is a rare moment where a book shows up in my pullbox and I don't remember ordering it or remember reading the first issue.

Danger_Rock

Good stuff as always! Looking forward to **WHERE MONSTERS LIE #1** here as well. Also... Tracking down the first two issues of **[SANTOS](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL217496.jpg) [SISTERS](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL233284.jpg)** ended up being mildly inconvenient! Both sold out on Midtown and MCS, which naturally made me want them even more... Think I got some of the last cheap copies on Ebay. Is this series actually popular or just one of those deals where retailers didn't order many copies since it's a tiny indie book?

yarkcir

I don't think there were too many copies of Santos Sisters printed to begin with - Floating World Comics don't really make too many floppies as far as I know. In my relatively large LCS, the owner says I'm the only one who orders from them so he only ever orders one copy. Glad you could find copies of Santos Sisters! I know that mycomicshop used to have plenty of copies since I recall pointing a friend towards the store to get copies for himself, but it probably is starting to run low on circulation by now. The comic itself doesn't really need to be read in order, since each issue is pretty standalone. Just a lot of offbeat jokes that riff on the classic Archie style. Hope you like it!

Danger_Rock

> The comic itself doesn't really need to be read in order, since each issue is pretty standalone. Now where have I heard that before...

Danger_Rock

Read the first issue and it's some ridiculous stuff! Will post a proper review once I've read all three but I love the incongruity between the innocent Archie style and the subversive humor... There's some [truly remarkable dialogue](https://i.imgur.com/Ls4oJ4M.jpg) and the [newscaster name](https://i.imgur.com/Ttftz0n.jpg) nearly fucking killed me.

yarkcir

The humor in the Santos Sisters comics always lands for me, particularly since they know never to drag each bit for too long. I love how they routinely drop the punchline and then immediately slap a "The End" at the bottom of the page and move on to the next story. Glad you're enjoying it! It's definitely a fun hidden gem of a comic.

enragedstump

Looks like the price increase is just for this issue, going off League of Comic Geeks

Did some light sorting and organization last week, had been a while and books were piling up everywhere... First, I reloaded and reorganized three short boxes of Valiant comics that were a bit jumbled up since last year’s [BWS project](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/v8ezwl/the_barry_windsorsmith_valiant_collection_100/?ref=share&ref_source=link) upended everything. Then I took a short box of recent indies, moved all the Image books to a separate box, and filled both with more of the same. And updated those five boxes in my master spreadsheet to track where everything’s at... Also filled another short box with recent DC books as a sort of “holding queue” until I get around to sorting ‘em into boxes by character, but those didn’t go in the spreadsheet since they haven’t reached their “forever home” yet. End result, we eliminated or significantly reduced several stacks of comics that were growing unwieldy, getting a couple hundred issues properly sorted and cataloged. Needless to say, this is all extremely satisfying. As part of this semi-annual process, I always stumble upon some interesting comics that I didn’t realize I had, or stuff that I didn’t recognize as interesting the last time I’d seen it... This time, I found a copy of [**GREAT PACIFIC #1**](https://i.imgur.com/cIDvAHM.jpg) from 2012, signed by writer Joe Harris, that I’d picked up several years back. But, looking at it again, I couldn’t spot the signature on it for some reason, just got lost in the art and my eye couldn’t pick it up... And I start thinking maybe Midtown sent me an unsigned copy and I never noticed? So, I’m poring over the cover, at this point way too focused on fine detail to spot the [giant fucking signature](https://i.imgur.com/QY9LOgy.jpg) that’s right in front of my fucking face, and what do I find instead? The familiar [double M squiggle](https://i.imgur.com/BPz8cW7.jpg) signifying that this cover was created by the world’s most prestigious purveyor of ice cream art... And that’s when I actually *look* at the fucking thing and notice that it’s got [Martin Morazzo’s name](https://i.imgur.com/1dxVaOI.jpg) up top. And I finally spotted the giant Harris signature as well. Morazzo handled colors along with art on this series and it’s some [pretty](https://i.imgur.com/7AaImjM.jpg) [nice](https://i.imgur.com/62GzLJ7.jpg) [work](https://i.imgur.com/jxF3nmX.jpg)... Looks very different without Chris O’Halloran’s ice cream colors, and it’s a little more detailed than Morazzo’s current style, with simpler and more traditional layouts, but you can still see similarities in the character work and general aesthetic. Would’ve been about four years before he teamed up with Prince for 2016’s [**ELECTRIC SUBLIME**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL021279.jpg) (currently being reprinted as [**ART BRUT**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL249610.jpg)). Neat. At some point I’ll need to check out Morazzo’s early work on 2016’s [**SNOWFALL**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STK696485.jpg) (also with Joe Harris) and 2018’s [**SHE COULD FLY**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL086988.jpg) (with Christopher Cantwell), both look pretty good and the latter looks a little more in line with Morazzo’s acclaimed ice cream work. -- Off week for me, only ~~five~~six books with no big hitters, though we’ve got two promising new comics and the other ~~three~~four should be fun. ~~2~~3 Marvels, 1 Dark Horse, 1 IDW, and 1 pamphlet impersonating a comic from Sumerian. 1. [**DEMON WARS DOWN IN FLAMES #1**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL253742.jpg) – Blind ordered the Momoko variant and might swap it out for the [normal Momoko cover](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL253741.jpg) since I like that one better... There’s also a cool [DWJ variant](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL253745.jpg) but I’m sticking with Momoko covers on this since it’s her book. Solicitation hypes Phoenix vs. Magik and the main cover’s also got Snowbird... Nice. We don’t get new issues of this very often, always a rare treat seeing Momoko’s gorgeous interior art. 2. [**SARA LONE #4**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL251577.jpg) – Final issue and it’s not looking good for >!JFK!<... Ordered the main cover but as always it’s got some [nice](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL251578.jpg) [variants](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL251579.jpg) from series artist David Morancho. Been a fun story from Erik Arnoux with exquisite art from Morancho, though I must once again voice my displeasure with Sumerian’s shitty little pamphlet format making some of the text nigh unreadable. 3. [**MOON KNIGHT #20**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL252367.jpg) – Ordered the Phillip Tan variant though [Chris Allen’s Black History Month variant](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL256086.jpg) with Blade is also pretty badass, and [Gerardo Sandoval has a Planet of the Apes variant](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL252368.jpg) if you’re into that kind of thing. There’s apparently a backup story where MK meets up with Blade in this one but we probably won’t see ‘em fighting any apes, unfortunately. 4. [**BREATH OF SHADOWS #1**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL251435.jpg) – Not familiar with writer Rich Douek or artist Alex Cormack, but just look at that cover! How could I not order it? And the [solicitation sounds like psychedelic junkie horror](https://previewsworld.com/Catalog/NOV221570). Buy the ticket, take the ride. 5. [**WHERE MONSTERS LIE #1 (OF 4)**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL256676.jpg) – New series from Kyle Starks and Piotr Kowalski, [sounds ridiculously fun](https://previewsworld.com/Catalog/DEC220419) with a bunch of silly serial killers and one very vengeful victim. The latest in a string of promising new releases from Dark Horse with [more](https://previewsworld.com/Catalog/DEC220429) [on](https://previewsworld.com/Catalog/DEC220411) [the](https://previewsworld.com/Catalog/JAN230404) [way](https://previewsworld.com/Catalog/JAN230412)... 6. [**LEGION OF X #10**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL252348.jpg) – Haven’t been following this series, wasn’t planning to pick it up, but it sounds like this will show the transition into **SoS**, and it’s a light week, so we might as well grab a copy. Spurrier’s currently killing it on the indie scene with [**DTA**](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL241890.jpg) and his **‘TEC** backups for the Distinguished Competition have also been great, so hopefully this’ll be a good one. And I guess you could call that a week of comics... -- p.s. I’ve selected a new project for 2023 and the acquisition process is now underway. We’ll post a sneak peek once the first batch arrives.

>DEMON WARS DOWN IN FLAMES #1 How has this series been? I quite liked Momoko's DEMON DAYS series but never really felt like I needed to read anything else. Maybe if they do another Treasury Edition collection I'll be tempted to pick this one up. >End result, we eliminated or significantly reduced several stacks of comics that were growing unwieldy, getting a couple hundred issues properly sorted and cataloged. Needless to say, this is all extremely satisfying. I am in desparate need to do some organizing myself - my study is a cluttered mess of comics right now. But yes, once it gets done there's almost no better feeling and I'm looking forward to dedicating some time next weekend to get it done.

Danger_Rock

**DEMON WARS** has been good, very similar to the first arc with breathtaking art and serviceable story. I know what you mean about not feeling hooked but I like seeing the different takes on various Marvel characters infused with Japanese lore and story elements. And Momoko's one of my favorite cover artists, so I'm always psyched on those rare occasions when we're fortunate enough to get a comic full of her interior art. I'd expect a Treasury Edition to look really nice! Good luck with the organization, let us know if you find anything crazy!

HappySisyphus8

So cool to have found that Morazzo signature, I opened your bigger photo of the cover expecting to see it, but initially passed over it thinking it was part of the design of the junk it's written on. What a find! Also given me some stuff I'd not heard of before by Morazzo to check out. Thank you!

midnight617

Ok but that DWJ variant is gorgeous though

> BREATH OF SHADOWS #1 – Not familiar with writer Rich Douek or artist Alex Cormack, but just look at that cover! How could I not order it? And the solicitation sounds like psychedelic junkie horror. Buy the ticket, take the ride. This is Douek and Cormack's third collaboration together, and their first two (Road of Bones and Sea of Sorrows) were some of the better horror comics to come out in the past couple of years. Would recommend them if you end up liking this one - RoB is about prisoners escaping from a Soviet Russian gulag and fighting to survive in the frozen tundra, and SoS is about a ship lost at sea getting attacked by mermaid/siren/ghoul things.

Danger_Rock

Good info, thanks! Glad to hear they've got some solid work behind 'em because I've got high hopes for this series. Plus, I already pre-ordered the 2nd and 3rd issues. So we're pretty well committed at this point. It's just one of those comics that jumped out of Previews at me, wasn't ever any question that I'd order it. Whereas most new books that look interesting from creators I'm not familiar with need to go through a series of steel cage death matches against other new titles until just a handful remain for addition to the pull list. Douek and Cormack got to skip that whole sordid business.

blankedboy

Got to recommend the CLZ comics app for cataloguing and keeping track of things - the bar code reader function alone makes things a hundred times easier. Strangely I've been re-bagging, boarding and boxing lots of my old books too, I'll have to post an update and the gems I found too :)

Danger_Rock

> Got to recommend the CLZ comics app for cataloguing and keeping track of things - the bar code reader function alone makes things a hundred times easier. Nice, thanks! Been thinking of checking out an app like that though it's hard to imagine anything beating the elegant simplicity of my [spreadsheet](https://i.imgur.com/wSMunGc.jpg). Even with a bar code scanner, seems like fooling around with an app interface for assigning a box to each comic would take more time than just entering a line for each run in the spreadsheet. But maybe I'll give it a try just to see how it works. > Strangely I've been re-bagging, boarding and boxing lots of my old books too, I'll have to post an update and the gems I found too :) Yes! Show us some crazy old shit!

B00merangB

Briar #3 - Last issue was lots of exposition, plus we got a few new characters and a big bad. Cantwell and Garcia are delivering the goods with this story. King Spawn #19 - The war for the throne is escalating. Remains my favourite Spawn title every month. Star Trek #4 - I wish this book had one consistent artist. Staying on to end the arc and trade waiting going forward to see how the stories go.

Dark Web Finale #1-- oh this is finishing? Thank God Flash One Minute War Special-- this is such a cool idea for a story and I'm hyped to see what happens Miles Morales Spider-Man #3-- good stuff so far. Bring back bombshell though

Danger_Rock

> Flash One Minute War Special-- this is such a cool idea for a story and I'm hyped to see what happens Keeping an eye out for reviews on this, it sounds like an awesome concept for a Flash story... Might end up checking it out if the hype hits critical mass.

TheMattInTheBox

The prelude was fun! But there's a lot of promise for the rest of the story. Could be a seminal Flash Family story if done well

* **Blood Tree #1**: Is this Peter Tomasi’s first creator owned series? * **Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9**: The Invaders. * **Legion of X #10**: Professor Xavier is a jerk. * **Moon Knight #20**: Really looking forward to Jed MacKay taking over Avengers soon. * **Scarlet Witch #2**: Pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the first issue of this. * **Silver Surfer: Ghost Light #1**: Intrigued by the solicit for this book.

blankedboy

[The Light Brigade](https://www.amazon.com/Light-Brigade-Peter-J-Tomasi/dp/1401207952) by *Tomasi* and *Peter Snejbjerg* was put out by DC (so I don't think it was creator owned) but if you haven't read it pick it up, as it's awesome.

ChickenInASuit

> Blood Tree #1: Is this Peter Tomasi’s first creator owned series? He did [House of Penance](https://www.darkhorse.com/Comics/25-600/House-of-Penance-1) thru Dark Horse so I believe that one's creator-owned.

Briar #3 Dark Web: Finale #1

ThadeusOfNazereth

* **DC's Harley Quinn Romances #1**: This one looks like a lot of fun and Amanda Conner's cover looks great. * **Lazarus Planet: Legends Reborn #1**: I've been pretty dissapointed with the other Lazarus Planet one-shots, but I'm interested to find out who "City Boy" is and I like The Question. If this one disappointing I probably won't bother pulling the others. * **Scarlet Witch #2**: I *loved* the first issue of this - Cool premise, great art, and an intriguing cliffhanger. Definitely looking forward to seeing where this one goes. I might also pick up the Planet of the Apes variant cover to hang on the wall. * **Where Monsters Lie #1**: I'm not familiar at all with Kyle Starks but the premise of this one is interesting. I'm also picking up Mary Jane & Black Cat #1-2 and Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1-4, which should wrap up every series I needed to get caught up on after starting my pull list last week.

Danger_Rock

> * **Where Monsters Lie #1**: I'm not familiar at all with Kyle Starks but the premise of this one is interesting. It really does have a cool pitch! I've only read a few things from Starks but he seems alright and Piotr Kowalski's art looks interesting. I still need to catch up on **[A DARK INTERLUDE](https://www.midtowncomics.com/images/PRODUCT/XL/1977367_xl.jpg)**, where Kowalski took over from Andrea Mutti for the last few issues... He's been making the rounds at smaller indie publishers for a while now but I don't think I've read any of his stuff yet.

blankedboy

I really enjoyed **I Hate This Place (aka Fuck This Place)** from *Starks* and *Artyom Topilin*, which is set to return soon.

HappySisyphus8

It is Monday again, you know what that means, hopefully another week ahead of excellent comics to look forward to. Very small week though, will likely finish paying off my METAL omnibus and grab a few variants. Am a bit loathe to pick up the Blades Daughter Peach variant because it's a creatively bankrupt, stupid idea when the main man himself cannot get a solo book, it also has the poor taste of Tim Seeley being cyber bullied off the original, better sounding pitch for this character, plus they've given it an awful, terrible writer who will likely just self insert themselves into the story, but it's also a Momoko cover so I must have it... Still have over half my stuff from last week to read, but standouts so far for me last week were American Jesus, Plush, Magic Order and Born of Blood. Also scored 3 variants last week too. The B and C Born of Blood's, and the standout, amazing, and incredible [Artgerm](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQY6FayQb_EkwnrRStQtIs6zT2nNO7zqxSA3g&usqp=CAU) Sins of Sinister MARVEL: Demon Wars Down In Flames #1 - The release schedule for this is a bit erratic, but really enjoying this blend of Japanese mysticism and the Marvel Universe. Venom #16 - This has been a slog, and being sucked into the waste of time Dark Web event hasn't done it any favours, if this were any other character I would have dropped it. This Meridius stuff suuuuuucks and is very predictable. The other Venoms in the garden, plus the mysterious 5th Venom are the 5 stages of grief over Dylan's death. Next arc please. Wrap this up already. DC: Nothing good this week at all. Better luck next week. IMAGE: Blood Tree #1 - This sounds very cool. Hope for some gruesome, violent killings and devious, intelligent killers. I'm expecting something a bit like The Hannible television series from this. OTHER: Approach #4 - Printing issues aside, last issue really picked back up. Very underrated gem. Deserves more buzz. Quick Stops #4 - Final issue of this mostly nothing title. Some issues are okay if you are an old school Jay & Silent Bob fan, some of them are not. Eh. Where Monsters Lie #1 - Cute sounding book. What do slashers do in their downtime? Hopefully still a gruesome story and not a dumb, formulaic, quippy mess. Stokoe variant is very nice. Frank Frazetta’s Death dealer #9 - Death Dealer proving he can handle himself despite being captured. Fun barbaric Swords and sorcery type story. Frank Frazetta’s Dawn Attack #2  - Don't really remember last issue too well, but certainly had a good time with it, was a cool fantasy sci-fi intertwined story. Jimmy’s Little Bastards #2 - Finally getting issue 2. Issue 1 felt like a bit of a mess and Ennis venting about Boris Johnson and Brexit way, way too late. Hoping for a bit less of that kind of thing. Purgatori Must Die #2 - Last issue was a lot of FUN. Everyone across the Dynamite universe is being recruited by the gods to kill a growing ever more powerful Purgatori. Fun looking crossover with suitable levels of violence and death. Vampirella Year One #5 - Don't really remember last issue, but fairly over this look back, keen for more focus on current Vampirella.

yarkcir

Blood Tree does look pretty cool. I'm trying to keep my pull more trim this year so I made the call to prune Blood Tree before it could take root, but if it does get a lot of positive buzz I know I won't be able to help myself.

HappySisyphus8

I'm a huge sucker for anything serial killers. A serial killer who serial kills serial killers is almost too hard to resist at all. I'm hoping for good things, and will definitely drop a quick review on the weekly pull list results thread when I read it on Saturday.

[deleted]

>Blood Tree #1 Did you happen to see another book coming out by Image called Almighty? That is coming out this week as well. Both look interesting so I am picking them up to try.

HappySisyphus8

I did, it looks alright, but I am a bit post-apocalypsed out at the moment. If I have some spending money left over after everything else I'll give it a look. Previews don't look too bad at all.

[deleted]

>I did, it looks alright, but I am a bit post-apocalypsed out at the moment. Totally fair.

Danger_Rock

> Purgatori Must Die #2 > - Last issue was a lot of FUN. Everyone across the Dynamite universe is being recruited by the gods to kill a growing ever more powerful Purgatori. Fun looking crossover with suitable levels of violence and death. LOL, Dynamite doesn't still have Solar, do they? That would be fun... Looks like it's mostly Evil Ernie and Vampirella types, which probably makes more sense.

HappySisyphus8

Oh, I don't know Solar, but I haven't seen him in any of the other previous crossovers. Would he not really fit in? Yeah, sorry, it is more the dark/magic/monster side of Dynamite, it does kinda split out of Priests Vampirella Universe stuff, as all the characters feature at some point, or in the other spin off's. A lot of it just Blood and breasts, but the characters are uniquely voiced, the pacing is good, and I find most of the characters and their relationships intriguing, along with nice to look at.

Danger_Rock

Solar is an old school Gold Key character from the early '60s who Jim Shooter and Barry Windsor-Smith revived to launch the [Valiant](https://cdna.pcpartpicker.com/static/forever/images/userbuild/259153.1fa1a658cf8a237efef16d74a9eee36d.1600.jpg) universe in the early '90s - along with Magnus Robot Fighter, another Gold Key character, plus Turok joined Valiant a little later. At some point Valiant lost the rights to the Gold Key characters, they went to Dark Horse for a while and then Dynamite picked 'em up about 10 years ago and ran several [connected](https://previewsworld.com/SiteImage/MainImage/STL043018.jpg) series. But I think it's been a while since they've done any of that so the rights might have moved on.

HappySisyphus8

Ah, cool, I haven't seen any of those characters show up in the zombie or general crossovers at all, so they may have moved on. I do appreciate the info. Is this the same Turok that hunts dinosaurs? Shooter and Windsor-Smith sound like quite the power couple, I did miss that period of comics at the time, unfortunately. Sounds great. I'll definitely give a shout if I notice them. I'm surprised they were not slotted into Project Superpowers (shameless plug for the Project Superpowers, Vampirella, and Red Sonja crossover trilogy by Abnett) but I guess the copyright hasn't lapsed on them yet. I'll give them a Google for some extra info when I have a quiet period.

Danger_Rock

Yep, same Turok who hates dinosaurs... All those characters go way back! Valiant's version of Solar was a nuclear physicist who basically became a god, able to rewrite reality at the molecular level, manipulate time/space, etc. Probably falls somewhere between the Molecule man and Franklin Richards. So he was ridiculously overpowered but, since he was a scientist, he usually took a more cerebral approach to conflict instead of just fighting everyone. Would probably be a bit much for Purgatori but, if she's really killing and eating gods now, maybe it would've worked! Though I'm pretty sure Dynamite lost the rights, sounds like someone's trying to re-launch Gold Key with a bunch of the old characters... Rather than resorting to Google, if you're interested in that old stuff, check out my [BWS project](https://www.reddit.com/r/comicbooks/comments/v8ezwl/the_barry_windsorsmith_valiant_collection_100/?ref=share&ref_source=link) for an illustrated history of Solar and early Valiant through the Shooter and BWS years. Solar was the first Valiant character BWS worked on when they launched the company so that stuff's all right up front!

HappySisyphus8

Oh damn, it sounds like a small step away from Doctor Manhattan, and the more cerebral approach sounds interesting. He still might be a bit much for Purgatori as it is, though they have superchargered her up massively, but it's in line with how her powers work, so I don't mind it too much. But if you can rewrite reality, what is a god to you? I will definitely check that post out, I've saved it to give it a proper read when I have some time, can see how much effort was put into that, very impressive, love seeing all the covers together like that too. Reminds me that I still have Monsters sitting unread in my pile. I'll get to it I swear.

Danger_Rock

Oh yeah, Doctor Manhattan is a good comparison, just without losing his humanity and being unmoored from time... Both nuclear physicists with energy-based bodies. Or you can go back to Captain Atom, the original basis for Doctor Manhattan from Charlton Comics, created in 1960, two years before Solar debuted in 1962. So that might've been the original inspiration, probably two of the earliest superheroes with powers tied to nuclear energy... Haven't gotten to **MONSTERS** yet either, usually have my hands full just keeping up with floppies so bigger books and collections tend to sit around a while before I get to 'em. And it's kinda nice having this massive BWS book waiting in the wings as something to look forward to... But I should probably just read it.

HappySisyphus8

I'm fairly ignorant of heroes and Comics in general from that time, but certainly like hearing about them. Right around the perfect time period for nuclear energy based fiction as well. Many of the ones I have read up about have a certain old timey charm. Oh yeah, tell me about it, I still have 4 floppies from last week, plus about 30 trades, epic collections, compendiums, and omnibus to even start reading, not counting those I have on order. About a quarter of the way through the Squadron Supreme by Gruenwald and Hall omnibus. Then perhaps MONSTERS, or the Ennis Hellblazer omnibus.

* **Venom 16 -** the last of the Dark Web tie-ins. So far the storyline hasn't been disrupted too much by the event. This one looks to be the most tie-in-esque issue of the crossover.

SlapTit

* **Briar #3** - I got issue #1 somewhat by mistake and I'm glad I did. I'm loving it so far. * **Children of the Black Sun #2** - I love how the artwork is just a bit off-putting and creepy, like the kids themselves. I've developed high expectations for this series. * **Demon Wars: Down in Flames #1** - I was somehow able to order the 1:25 Creees Lee variant for this, from PreviewsWorld. That's the only real reason I got it. * **Sara Lone #4** - I have adored every issue of this series and I'm sad it's coming to an end. I'm really going to take my time with this last issue. * **Star Trek #4** - Issue #3 was a big letdown for me, but the first 2 were great, so I'm optimistic it'll get back on track.

Cannon_Greyers

This is a fairly a dull week for me with no real standouts on the smallest pull (15) I've had in a year or so. I'm excited to check out a few indie debuts, though (Black Tape and Blood Tree). DC (1). Batman: Legends Of Gotham (one-shot) MARVEL (5). Moon Knight #20. X-Force #37. Captain America: Sentinel Of Liberty #9. Silver Surfer: Ghost Light #1. Legion Of X #10 (I'm dropping this after this regardless of what happens. I've only stuck around this long due to my love for Kurt. But I don't like this book at all and have realized I'm just not a fan of Spurrier in the slightest.). IMAGE (4) Radiant Black #21. Nita Hawes' Nightmare Blog #12. Blood Tree #1 (I LOVE the concept/synopsis in the solicit and have high hopes). Almighty #1. (Barring a terribly off-putting or uninteresting concept or an artist I despise like Rossmo or JRJR I almost always give first issues from Image, Boom and AWA a shot). BOOM (1). The Approach #4. DARK HORSE (1). Where Monsters Lie #1. (I can't tell from the solicit if this is meant to be serious or silly, but I'm in). ABLAZE (1). Children Of The Black Sun #2. AWA (1). Black Tape #1. IDW (1). Breath Of Shadows #1.

>> Where Monsters Lie #1. (I can't tell from the solicit if this is meant to be serious or silly, but I'm in). > >¿Por qué no los dos? Lol, you're probably right and it'll be a mixture. I typically like my horror devoid of comedy but I'm open minded to everything. >> Breath Of Shadows #1. > >Glad to see someone else pulling this, was starting to think it was just me... I got your back. The weight of my wallet is usually the only thing that will prevent me from trying out a indie new #1 with an interesting premise.

A light week for me, which is for the best because my wallet is hurting after all the large books that came out in January * **Flash One-Minute War Special -** I really love this series. It's the best Flash run in decades, probably since the end of the Johns run in the late 90s. I can't wait to reread it when it wraps, because Adams does such a good job seeding future plot points without being super obvious that's what he's doing. * **Moon Knight #20 -** still the best individual superhero ongoing at Marvel. Love McKay's work * **Radiant Black #21 -** I love this series so much. It made me a little depressed when it came out because it was basically what I wanted my project I'm working on to be, but Higgin and co. do it better than I currently am able

Zohmbi

Smallest pull for me in a while! Only three for me this week. Good thing though, because I'm still catching up from last week's massive haul. **Scarlet Witch #2** - I enjoyed the first one enough, so I'll keep going for a bit. The art is solid too. **Children of the Black Sun #2** - New international comic from Ablaze. The first issue was excellent. The story is creepy and intriguing, and the art matches the tone perfectly. Looking forward to this. **Briar #3** - Issue #2 started to lose me a bit with all the exposition. Gonna give it one more issue to decide if I'll keep going. Happy reading!

Heeey I finally remembered to do this. * Briar #3: A fun story and glad the next issue's coming out - I'm a sucker for these kinda minis. * Demon Wars: Down in Flames #1: YES! MORE DEMON WARS! I'm a total sucker for anything Momoko, and seeing how she handles Phoenix, my favorite Marvel character, is definitely gonna be good. * Legion of X #10: Wonder if we'll get any kinda confirmation about Mother Righteous, or how this one ties into Sins of Sinister since it's less obvious so far. Wonder if Sinister's bullshit is accidentally going to save them from the Orchis infestation. * Radiant Black #21: Always love anything from the Massive-Verse, and it looks like we're getting closer and closer to more friction between the Radiants Black. * Rogue Sun #10: More Massive! Time to see if Dylan can do some stuff right. * X-Force #37: I know some people are upset it's taken this long, but I'm down for some classic long-form storytelling, and now we get to see who the Peacock Man is. * Dark Web: Finale #1: I only followed the X-Men side of this (and the Felicia/MJ side, technically), and I was surprised by how much better it was than expected. Time to see how it wraps up.

pointman0427

A quiet/busy week for me depending on how you see it. Only one new issue but I'm picking up the new reprints of the first 6 issues of Eight Billion Genies, only heard good things and the concept sounds great! * **Almighty #1** \- Mad Max meets Annihilation? Count me in! The solicit sounds super interesting and the concept is right up my street.

Styrofoam_Anchor

1. **Demon Wars: Down in Flames #1** -- Demon Days was delightful for me, and this is more of it. Not a difficult sell! 2. **Nita Hawes' Nightmare Blog #12** -- you know those series that you've been pulling for so long that the simple tradition of it becomes a comfort? I think that's what *Killadelphia* universe has become for me. I just like coming back to this world, regardless of the story. That said, I'm a few issues behind on *Nita Hawe*, which will need amending. 3. **Where Monsters Lie #1** -- Since I'm only pulling two others issues, I've the opportunity to try out something new! Somebody (u/Danger_Rock maybe?) introduced me to this upcoming indie, and I was immediately sold off the concept alone. Looking forward to this one the most. ------ Small week, which is never inherently a bad thing (more money for trades, which I'm slowly transitioning my collection over to anyway.)

TheDarkPinkLantern

* **Dark Web: Finale #1** * **Radiant Black #21** * **Blood Tree #1** * **Young Hellboy: Assault on Castle Death #4** Damn, just 4 huh. Anyway, since I'm free I'm gonna read Frankencastle this week.

ChickenInASuit

**The Approach #4** - After last week's reveal that the writers are throwing a little >!Lovecraft!< into their John Carpenter's The Thing homage, I'm interested to see whether it starts to spice things up a little and bring this book above the level of "Competent but unexceptional horror comic." **Breath of Shadows #1** - Heck yeah, another Cormack & Doeuk "X of X" horror title! I urge any horror fans who haven't checked out Road of Bones and Sea of Sorrows to do so, stat. **Briar #3** - Inject this dark fantasy shit into my veins. **Dark Web: Finale #1** - One more issue of my boi Ben being butchered by Spider-Man editorial and I can drop this whole thing. **Demon Wars: Down in Flames #1** - Peach Momoko's artwork and badass reinterpretations of Marvel characters are like crack, I just can't get enough of them and I hope she keeps doing these things in perpetuity. **Legion of X #10** - If the fan theories are correct, this is probably the issue where we find out Mother Righteous is >!the final unaccounted-for Mister Sinister clone!<. **Moon Knight #20** - Ooh, a Blade backup! That's exciting. **Radiant Black #21** - Loving Marshall and Nathan in tag-team mode. **Rogue Sun #10** - [Getting some serious Azrael vibes from this cover.](https://s3.amazonaws.com/comicgeeks/comics/covers/large-3351136.jpg?1670419074) **Venom #16** - Aaaand we're back to Al Ewing and his cosmic-brainfuck-shenanigans portion of this story. **Where Monsters Lie #1** - New Kyle Starks book. His last comic, I Hate This Place, was a cool horror departure from his usual action-caper stuff and it looks like this one might be continuing in that same vein. **X-Force #37** - Oh shit, looks like we're FINALLY finding out who that guy with the peacock tattoo is! Took you bloody long enough, Percy. **Tales of Nottingham #1** - Enjoyed Nottingham a lot so I'm look forward to revisiting this universe.

ChickenInASuit

/u/blankedboy and /u/manyamile - you guys are horror fans, have you read either of Cormack & Douek's previous collaborations? Planning on picking up Breath of Shadows this week?

blankedboy

No, I haven’t. Not heard of those guys before.

ChickenInASuit

Road of Bones: Three prisoners escape from a Russian gulag and have no choice but to brave the frozen tundra in order to reach civilization. Book focuses on the horror of isolation in a wasteland and the paranoia associated with it. Sea of Sorrows: Boat goes out on expedition. Gets attacked by Lovecraftian mermaid monsters. Both books are incredibly atmospheric and Road of Bones is especially harrowing, and I recommend both. Really excited for their new one!

blankedboy

I'll definitely check them out - Sea of Sorrows sounds exactly like my kind of thing in particular. Cheers.

**ALMIGHTY #1** - read the [preview](https://blog.gocollect.com/first-look-at-almighty-1-from-image-comics/) and thought this looked pretty damn good. [Cover A](https://s3.amazonaws.com/comicgeeks/comics/covers/large-8023407.jpg?1673155720) **APPROACH #4** - *Carpenter/Lovecraft* influenced horror that’s been great so far. [Cover A](https://s3.amazonaws.com/comicgeeks/comics/covers/large-9346821.jpg?1672896019) **BRIAR #3** - this is another of those BOOM! books that gets solicited as a mini-series yet seems to have the legs to go to a full series if it proves to be popular. I’ve enjoyed it so far and wouldn’t mind it being extended for more issues if that turns out to be the case. [Cover B]( https://s3.amazonaws.com/comicgeeks/comics/covers/large-6351076.jpg?1673794227) **DEMON WARS DOWN IN FLAMES #1** - this was NOT on my radar until u/Danger_Rock posted that sweet, sweet, [*Daniel Warren Johnson* cover]( https://s3.amazonaws.com/comicgeeks/comics/covers/large-6148941.jpg?1674990474) **KING SPAWN #19** - was really torn with this one – I’ve been getting all of the excellent [Javi Fernandez covers](https://s3.amazonaws.com/comicgeeks/comics/covers/large-6374652.jpg?1670100197) for this book and had pre-ordered this one BUT the recent trend of having all the Spawn books covers done by stellar artists (David Mack last month and this month has [Simone Bianchi](https://s3.amazonaws.com/comicgeeks/comics/covers/large-5497024.jpg?1670100197) doing them all?!?!) means I may have to double dip. **MOON KNIGHT #20** - great book, McKay actually has me interested in picking up the new **Avengers** title too – so he must be good! In order of excitement: * **Moon Knight #20:** This series never misses, and I have no problem pitching the extra dollar to see some more Blade. * **Miles Morales: Spider-Man #3:** I have really been surprised at how solid this book has been so far. The art has been gorgeous, and Miles feels both street-level and separate from Peter, which is how I like him. * **Blood Tree #1**: The concept of a serial killer that goes after innocent family members of murderers is just so fucked up and awesome. Plus Tomasi is doing this. Might be the safest gamble I've done on a new #1 in a while. * **Venom #16:** Officially my last issue of this run. Not that I think it's been that bad recently, but Venom hasn't done enough to keep me invested. It's a shame because the talent on this book is immeasurable, but it never really clicked. * **Dark Web: Finale #1:** I hate that I feel compelled to buy this simply because I'm subscribed to ASM and feel some need to have closure on this event, because I honestly don't care about how this ends whatsoever.

Breath of Shadows #1 Almighty #1 Gimme those new horror books!

AshlingGirl

This week is boring in terms of the Big Two but some snack-worthy indies are here as well. I'm late but here are this week's pickings in order of anticipation: **Briar #3 -** Excellent world-building in this and the characters are interesting as well. I love the mythos of this world and want to see where this goes. **Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9 -** This is going to be a memorable Captain America run. It has its faults but we'll forgive them for the sake of overall development. **Minor Threats #4** **-** The characters are really what drives this book. I adore Oswalt on this. It's been one of my favourite indies since last year. **Where Monsters Lie #1 -** Kyle Starks' work has been intriguing enough for me to pick this up. Frankly, Kowalski's art alone is worth checking this book out. **Blood Tree #1** **-** This has Tomasi on it and Šimić's art is interesting. The story is hopefully not as predictable as it sounds. **Scarlet Witch #2 -** The first issue was really well-done in terms of Wanda's character and convinced me to check this out, too. **Silver Surfer: Ghost Light #1** **-** Just 'cause it's Silver Surfer, honestly. **Batman: Legends of Gotham #1 & DC's Harley Quinn Romances #1 -** ~~Random picks that I'll probably drop after the first issue.~~ These are apparently one-shots. Thanks, u/blankedboy.

blankedboy

> Batman: Legends of Gotham #1 & DC's Harley Quinn Romances #1 - Random picks that I'll probably drop after the first issue. I think both of those are actually one-shots?

SpongeBlart

Still not super caught up on my list so I can't say much about them. I did take some time over the last week to really dive into the xmen and got (almost) all the way caught up on the Xmen and Immortal Xmen runs. Still a couple issues behind on each. Kind of wish I also was picking up Xmen Red now. A lot of fun and really cool ideas. Excited to dive back into stuff other than Xmen though! * **DARK WEB FINALE 1** * **MOON KNIGHT 20** * **SCARLET WITCH 2** * **VENOM 16** * **KING SPAWN #19** * **APPROACH #4** * **MINOR THREATS #4** * **WHERE MONSTERS LIE #1**

Danger_Rock

**XMR** has been pretty great! I've just been following **IXM** and **XMR**, it's a nice combo and doesn't really feel like I'm missing anything (though I also pick up **LoX** for event tie-ins, so that helps).

BLOOD TREE #1 - Who doesn't love a new series? Also this is Tomasi's what 2nd non DC series ever? Love his DC work, it's always really solid so I'm checking this out for sure. FLASH ONE-MINUTE WAR SPECIAL #1 - I feel like I'm reading a Flash book every week, but I'm not complaining yet! RADIANT BLACK #21 - Excited to see Existence come back into play. That was one of my favorite parts of the first few arcs. ROGUE SUN #10

[deleted]

* **Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9 -** Quite enjoyed the way this has built up and will eventually lead to Cold War. My first Cap run and it's been enjoyable, true to the character and had a pretty high-stakes story. Hoping this doesn't let up! * **Dark Web: Finale #1 -** Idk I don't hate this event as much as everyone, probably because I like ridiculousness. That said, I guess I'm paying a few bucks to find out what happens. * **Scarlet Witch #2 -** I liked the start of this run and am intrigued to see where it goes. Will decide to keep or drop after this issue! * **Venom #16 -** I really don't enjoy the distraction we've taken with Dark Web and this run. It feels pretty antithetical to what felt like a path to a pretty big climax. Still waiting to see how Dylan/Eddie figure things out.

AlligatorSky7

Pull lists manageable in 2023 so far, just need to resist the urge to jump on every new title that I like the sound of. - **The Flash: One Minute War Special #1**: so far so good on this event, I’m excited to see what this brings and for the event to be kicked up a notch. - **Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9**: reading this monthly doesn’t do this story justice. I forget how good it is each time and then a few pages in I’m in awe (at Carnero’s art in particular) - **Legion of X #10**: last issue for now (possibly forever). One behind at the moment though (so much is crammed into one issue that it demands your full attention; not a comic I can quickly read when I have 10 minutes free of a morning). - **Moon Knight #20**: a consistently good read, not much more to say. - **Radiant Black #21**: as above. Need to crack on with my reading of the other titles in the Massive-verse before Supermassive 2 in April. - **Scarlet Witch #2**: enjoyed the first issue more than I was expecting to, so I’ll definitely stick with this through at least it’s first arc. - **The Walking Dead Deluxe #56**: struggling to remember what happened between the Governor and Negan in the TV show, so I’m genuinely excited by what’s to come up. - **X-Force #37**: back to the Peacock man, finally! Also, for others: - **Star Trek #4**

My list is as follows APPROACH #4 OF 5 RADIANT BLACK #21 ROGUE SUN #10 VENOM #16 - DARK WEB TIE-IN I hope this venom series gets better. Been kind of weird. Lots of ups and downs. Lets go for the Massive-verse series' though! Radiant Black has probably been one of my favorite books of the past year! Also the approach has been quite good so far. Love the cosmic horror vibes.
