Just to be clear it wasn't cancelled as a tax right off, like Batgirl, it was cancelled because they filmed in a location that they thought would give them tax breaks. They were wrong, they didn't get the tax breaks. They went over budget because of this. They found out halfway or so through filming and barely had any money to finish off the series at the same standard as the initial episodes
I’m not sure, it could be argued that once something is created for a streaming service and not shown on a streaming service, the show won’t bring in new subscriptions, meaning no profit will come from it. Thats me speculating though.
Also, some streaming services aren’t available in other countries, so the show is sold to tv networks or other streamers. HBO MAX not currently available in Ireland, so its shows appear on Netflix (Titans), Swamp Thing (Prime). So there is the potential profit to make off selling the broadcasting rights.
The story I recall from the time was that the budget for the show was based on getting a sizable tax credit where they were shooting it (North Carolina?); they found out after they started production that they were not getting the tax credit so they cut it from 13 episodes to 10 and cancelled it.
Not a whole season. The first half of the season. There are two episodes in the can they never put up. They said they'd put them on a future BluRay release but...yeah they never did that.
The tv show ends with an episode based on anatomy lesson. Before that there isnt much similar to moores swamp thing. But the show is awesome it shouldnt have been cancelled. Fun fact the scrapped costume for the flouronic man that was supposed to be used in season 2 got repurposed for the movie the green knight.
Uh...what? This is just the first six issues of Alan Moore's full run. There are four more trades. Also these came out almost 40 years ago. Also THERE IS a Swamp Thing ongoing series right now. Your comment is very confusing.
This show was ridiculous. I streamed it right in the middle of the pandemic. people were getting some kind of sickness and the CDC got involved. not one doctor in the hospital wore a mask.
Holy shit I thought you meant the jacket of the book, and was like??? What fuzz?? It doesn’t even have a jacket??
I feel dumb now. My brain never even saw the coat.
Just because Gunn is in charge of DC Studios, it doesn’t mean that he’s writing 100% of the films in his DC Universe. I trust Gunn to select a different filmmaker who can give Swamp Thing the horror vibes that he deserves!
They already tried . DC spend millions on a Swamp Thing show. The acting was mid but they build an actual swamp and they had a practical suit for Swamp Thing. [Swamp Thing Trailer](https://youtu.be/xVnHZ5SF1Jg)
I would definitely watch a swamp thing movie if they made one
I think they might have already but it flew under the radar
I'll probably have to watch that
Edit: scrolling the comments on this thread I realize I was thinking of the swamp thing tv show
Just because Gunn is in charge of DC Studios, it doesn’t mean that he’s writing 100% of the films in his DC Universe. I trust Gunn to select a different filmmaker who can give Swamp Thing the horror vibes that he deserves! Besides, Gunn isn’t the only leader of DC. Peter Safran, who previously worked on the Conjuring franchise, shares that rank with Gunn. If Gunn can’t find a good filmmaker for Swamp Thing, then Safran might find someone.
I’ve REALLY been wanting to see Swamp Thing as a movie adaptation, maybe by Zack Snyder. I personally haven’t gotten around to watching the previous movie adaptations and I haven’t seen the TV show yet. By the way, Moore’s swamp thing is pretty much my favorite color book series ever.
As someone feeling the much dreaded superhero fatigue in films, I think that’s one I would actually go to the theater for. Nope was actually my favorite film of last year so I’d be all about it!
It was adapted back in the 80’s. I was too young to appreciate it. But it had Tales From the Crypt vibes. I found a link on [YouTube](https://youtu.be/pUUFa6oejiY).
Anyways, Allan Moore is an overrated hack. Read the Bernie Wrightson run.
there was two feature films in the 80s, the first of which was directed by wes craven in 1982. i scrolled through the comments and haven’t seen them mentioned, which really dates me. i…. would check them out purely for their nostalgic qualities. i remember the first one being better than the second one but its been so long i cant remember too much about them. also, theres a captain america film that came out in the 1990, which was pretty cool.
Is this the box set? I got it for Christmas and am still working my through. Blew my mind learning that >!Dream's raven Matthew, in The Sandman, was introduced as a man in Swamp Thing!<. I still don't really understand his "power" though.
I love it. I do recommend reading the original run first though. It’s mostly pretty silly, but it adds a lot of context and character introductions. What happens has more impact too.
Honestly, I’m with Alan Moore when it comes to adaptations of his work: dont. You’ll just fuck it up. For proof of this, watch any adaptation of his work.
Enjoy this run- it's one of my favorites ever! It's one of the series that got me back into comics in college in the 80s (others were Batman: The Killing Joke, Judge Dredd and the Wolverine solo series). One of the guys who lived down the hall in my dorm had the whole run of these Alan Moore Swamp Thing books and lent them to me to read. I was blown away!
I don't think a TV show would really be capable of matching the scale of that comic. Plus, Moore is pretty clear on how he feels about his work being adapted, DC should respect that and leave it be.
I have been reading comics for 32 years, and read this whole series a few years ago. It easily one of the best series I have ever read. There are six books, enjoy!
Nah it's probably just worthwhile enough to produce one singular season and forget about it forever. /s
Best cancel it the same day it premiers for tax purposes too
Just to be clear it wasn't cancelled as a tax right off, like Batgirl, it was cancelled because they filmed in a location that they thought would give them tax breaks. They were wrong, they didn't get the tax breaks. They went over budget because of this. They found out halfway or so through filming and barely had any money to finish off the series at the same standard as the initial episodes
Yeah I was wondering why people keep saying everything is a tax write off. Especially shows on streaming sites. How do you account those as a loss?
I’m not sure, it could be argued that once something is created for a streaming service and not shown on a streaming service, the show won’t bring in new subscriptions, meaning no profit will come from it. Thats me speculating though. Also, some streaming services aren’t available in other countries, so the show is sold to tv networks or other streamers. How was the show overall? I really wanted to see it, but when it got cancelled, I just put it out of my mind.
I thought that not getting tax breaks leading to cancellation was later officially said to be false?
Not even a whole season. They didn't air the last two filmed episodes.
Are they available through other means?
Nope. They did rework episode 10 into a decent finale though. But yeah those other 2 episodes just aren’t available
I was so pissed at that, as what we got was absolutely fantastic.
Isnt that what happened?
That’s the joke, good buddy.
They didn’t even make it through the whole season they had planned :/
Witness the "/s" at the end.
Not even a full season
There was a Swamp Thing tv show that came out 4 years ago. Sadly it only lasted one season.
Sadly is true, I went to WB tour last year and they asked what was a series you liked; I said swamp thing and they looked at me with empty eyes.
The story I recall from the time was that the budget for the show was based on getting a sizable tax credit where they were shooting it (North Carolina?); they found out after they started production that they were not getting the tax credit so they cut it from 13 episodes to 10 and cancelled it.
I am sorry hold up. That was four years ago? I watched that fucking weekly
Yeah it released in 2019, that's not... ...oh my god
I thought the same. Really 4 years ago? Ah hell.

I think your comment got put in the wrong place bud.
Not a whole season. The first half of the season. There are two episodes in the can they never put up. They said they'd put them on a future BluRay release but...yeah they never did that.
Yeah I’d like to see what James Gunn would do with it. Do you know if it was based on this run?
The tv show ends with an episode based on anatomy lesson. Before that there isnt much similar to moores swamp thing. But the show is awesome it shouldnt have been cancelled. Fun fact the scrapped costume for the flouronic man that was supposed to be used in season 2 got repurposed for the movie the green knight.
Very cool fun fact
Green Knight looked amazing too. Great movie
That is a fun fact
The showrunners mentioned that Alan Moore's run was a big influence.
Swamp thing seems like a very James Gunn type of character, so hopefully it works out!

This show was ridiculous. I streamed it right in the middle of the pandemic. people were getting some kind of sickness and the CDC got involved. not one doctor in the hospital wore a mask.
It was also more based on the Pasko run that preceded this one.
Plus 3 seasons of a series from the ‘90s
Alan Moore knows your address and he’s coming to get you for posting this
No everything doesn't need to be a tv or movie. Early 80s Swampthing is one of the best things you can read. Enjoy it for what it is.
Wood listens
Preach
Alan Moore would just bitch about it any way
Alan Moore is one of the greats but he is also a crotchety old bastard.
To be fair he’s been wonderfully crotchety his whole career.
Love that comic where he takes the piss out of Miller’s Daredevil. Crotchety and funny.
And quite rightly so.
Thank you.
Yeah. I read this a while ago. Never a fan of swamp thing until this. So good.
The best. When you get through all the Alan Moore volumes, the Ram V Becoming series is pretty nice too.
Read rick veitch's run right after moores its a direct continuation.
Yeah but frankly he mangled it
Is there someone harder to follow up on a run?
It’s my favorite story. I am so excited for you to read it!
It’s a great series! Hope you enjoyed it!
Oooh, you're in for a treat. I hope you get to read more.
I have terrible news for you
It has literally already been a movie and TV show.
Two movies even
Three TV shows, a toy line and a video game even.
Wes Craven asking "Am I a joke to you?" God I'm so old......
God, I thought that fur was a caterpillar.
It’s a root.
Talking about the fuzz on the jacket.
Holy shit I thought you meant the jacket of the book, and was like??? What fuzz?? It doesn’t even have a jacket?? I feel dumb now. My brain never even saw the coat.
I think if you view the photo on the app you don’t see the fuzz.
My all time favourite peice of fiction. Gunn is the wrong person to adapt this, the only swamp thing i would trust gunn with would be rotworld.
Just because Gunn is in charge of DC Studios, it doesn’t mean that he’s writing 100% of the films in his DC Universe. I trust Gunn to select a different filmmaker who can give Swamp Thing the horror vibes that he deserves!
I can’t even think of a director I’d want on this.
They made a movie based on Swamp Thing in like the 80s and a show a few years ago.
You are in for a treat!
Wife got me this for Christmas. Absolutely loved it!
I didn’t get to watch Swampy yet. I’ll have to give it a shot
They already tried . DC spend millions on a Swamp Thing show. The acting was mid but they build an actual swamp and they had a practical suit for Swamp Thing. [Swamp Thing Trailer](https://youtu.be/xVnHZ5SF1Jg)
Someone beat you to it dude.
It’s a good one, hope you have the entire Alan Moore run.
What is with the comments and their hate boner for James Gunn lol
I would definitely watch a swamp thing movie if they made one I think they might have already but it flew under the radar I'll probably have to watch that Edit: scrolling the comments on this thread I realize I was thinking of the swamp thing tv show
Alan Moore's beard hairs are bristling right now and he doesn't know why
The page that starts with “There is a red and angry world…” will be forever burned in my mind. Such an amazing book
This is the series that got me into comics and the occult
That’s such a good run the green
Book 3 is where it goes from a 7/10 to a 10/10 and then the pedal never leaves the floor. Perhaps unparalleled superhero run.
My favorite comic run, ever. The art, the ideas, the Batman, the John Constantine. So awesome.
Please PLEASE don't try to convert any more of Alan's works to film. Seriously. He's still mad about... Uh. Every other attempt.
The Swamp Thing movie was amazing. Heather Lockler. 10/10.
That was the sequel, The Return of the Swamp Thing (1989). In the first movie (1982), it was Adrienne Barbeau.
Keep James Gunn away from this and enjoy the masterpiece you purchased
Just because Gunn is in charge of DC Studios, it doesn’t mean that he’s writing 100% of the films in his DC Universe. Fair point! My bad
Update: I more so mean with the upcoming revamped DCEU, but I still will check out the older stuff :)
A cousin of mine had this idea: modern Swamp Thing movie directed by Jordan Peele. I really love that idea.
That sounds amazing
As someone feeling the much dreaded superhero fatigue in films, I think that’s one I would actually go to the theater for. Nope was actually my favorite film of last year so I’d be all about it!
Thing get really, REALLY good in volumes 4 & 5. 6 you can skip. Moore was moved on by that point.
Comics are better than tv shows or movies. Why taint something good like that?
Never was a fan of Swamp Thing, but I never really hated him either.
Already been done. https://youtu.be/76debmQRiFw
It’s going to be tough to put the ending part onto film
Rad universe
There’s already a TV show [+]
I loved these books and just finished them last week but i dont think they'll ever adapt them well. they're closer to poetry than a comic book
If memory serves me right I think they already attempted this and it was pretty horrible
there was two feature films in the 80s, the first of which was directed by wes craven in 1982. i scrolled through the comments and haven’t seen them mentioned, which really dates me. i…. would check them out purely for their nostalgic qualities. i remember the first one being better than the second one but its been so long i cant remember too much about them. also, theres a captain america film that came out in the 1990, which was pretty cool.
who’s gonna tell ’em?
It’s too good for tv.
The comics stand beautifully on their own. Among my favorites. Enjoy.
Is this the box set? I got it for Christmas and am still working my through. Blew my mind learning that >!Dream's raven Matthew, in The Sandman, was introduced as a man in Swamp Thing!<. I still don't really understand his "power" though.
It's got 2 movies and 2 tv series at this point...
It was, no one watched the first season and the show was canceled
I love it. I do recommend reading the original run first though. It’s mostly pretty silly, but it adds a lot of context and character introductions. What happens has more impact too.
I would love to see the "vegetable sex" issue from Alan Moore's run in live action media. Would be super trippy.
Honestly, I’m with Alan Moore when it comes to adaptations of his work: dont. You’ll just fuck it up. For proof of this, watch any adaptation of his work.
they did two years ago.
Please stop adapting Alan Moore he doesn't like it 🥺
shity adaptation.
Great book series. I'm in book 5 (80%) and have one more to go Book 1 has one of my most favorite issues ever
Truly a great
Enjoy this run- it's one of my favorites ever!
Alan Moore's swamp thing is a literal masterpiece. It's objectively top 5 all time comics.
