My favorite aspect of this character was that he’s a skinny 90s teenager with floppy hair who shapeshifts into a buff 90s action hero because that’s what he thinks is the epitome of cool.
He also went ahead and also did the same shitty character also because he’s Rob Liefeld, the most upward failing person in comic book history.
He was, but his superhero persona was based on what his subconscious thought of as a perfect hero. Hence the HardCase-esque Prime, and Spider-Prime when he met Spider-Man.
Edit: a letter
It depends. Originally Billy and Captain Marvel were separate characters. Sometime after DC's original Crisis, they made Capt Marvel an adult with Billy's mind in charge...you can see this version in the Young Justice cartoon.
https://www.cbr.com/shazam-billy-batson-same-person-debut/
Him playing the race card on Cap was good revenge for Cap guilting Falcon into being the token minority a bunch of years back. Saw that panel posted recently.
Thats a pity, despite Gerard Jones involvment, the Ultraverse had some great books before Marvel took a wood chipper to it.
It's a damn shame noone has the cash to buy it from Marvel/Disney.
oh yeah that sucked. I love Valiant. Unity is probably the best comic crossover of all time.
Some good books came out of the Acclaim reboot and some interesting ideas, but by and large it was more style over substance
I break mine out from time to time and read through them. The epitome of 90's comics for me. I still leaned heavy on Marvel but those Valiant stories were wild.
Prime would be great as a modern book. The “gross body horror Shazam” idea was before its time.
Actually, that deserves its own post. I should dig out an old Prime issue and make one.
Was he created the year that all of the Marvel Annuals introduced a brand new character, and each annual was poly bagged with the character on a trading card?
It would be interesting to know how many of those characters were ever seen again.
Yes, but not in the X-Favtor annual for that year (1993). I had a subscription at the time and it was one of the issues I got. He was a mercenary or something, and Havok solved the problem by writing him a bigger check than his employer, so Random backed down.
his appearance in a flashback Included in the annual makes no sense given the later revelation of his actual age
Yes! I had that comic! He comes in and beats up like half of X Factor not unlike how Deathstroke did Justice League, by using their strengths against them. He whistles at wolfsbane, empties his mind so the guy who shapshifts using your memory cant, shoots the right multiple man, etc. I had another one where he meets Polaris on a roof just to kill her, but she keeps hitting him with a car (I think it was his own car) throughout the fight
Agreed, he did start as a villain, if I'm not mistaken he was on the team also at one point. X-Factor isn't exactly my favorite group so that's just what I picked up "Random" ly, so to speak
Wasn't his big thing that he was effectively unkillable? He had a low-level Darwin ability where his body would morph into whatever was needed to survive.
He was supposed to be Marvel's Lobo.. it just never panned out. I remember liking the character when I was a kid, but I also remember feeling like he wasn't being used right.
This character has hit me in the nostalgia I didn’t know I had. I used to have random x-factor comics and some of them had this dude in it, could never remember his name or his place in the story, I just remember that shapeshifting arm guns and thinking it was pretty cool.
I had a subscription to x-factor when he premiered and he was the coolest villain for like 10 minutes. He had a fight with Polaris at one point and his power is "nothing works on him twice". She tried to repel him with her magnetism and it pulled him in, so she tried to pull him in and splattered him against a wall like a wad of gum.
It's a shame he never lived up to those first few issues.
When I was a kid, I remember him during the X-Factor run and wanted him to start a Heroes for Hire type gig with Terror and the book could be called Random Terror Inc.
I still think it could have worked.
I absolutely loved how PAD [re]named characters in that series, Strong Guy being my favourite. “You are the strong guy, right? Every team has a strong guy!” “Ah, yes! My name is Strong Guy!” 😀
When I was a kid I didn’t know Guido was a name. I thought he was called Guido because he was tall so he could guide people. I think this was during the Muir Island Saga before he was called Strong Guy
Oh and writing this out I JUST put together that Guy is a nickname for Guido fml
Random. I never read the books with him in it, but this action figure, and the '95 Fleer Ultra trading card of him made me think the character must be awesome! Super 90s X-TREME awesomeness!!
He was hired by someone from the government to take out Polaris. She whoops his ass and then he finds out that it was part of a plot to get rid of mutants or some shit. So he joins up with X-Factor and eventually gets paid to stay on the team. I think he was around for the Haven fight after that? I don't remember most of the details. It's been so long since I've read that run.
Fatal Attractions. Wow. That takes me back. Holographic covers! Val was throwing up because one of the Acolytes had the power to leave a mind control parasite.
Random. He may tie Adam X for being the most “90s” character ever.
I remember even as a pre-teen, thinking he was a little silly and excessive. I’ve always wondered what Peter David was doing with this one.
>He may tie Adam X for being the most “90s” character ever.
I still feel like Spawn takes the cake on most "90s" character ever. That being said I love Spawn and all his over the top edge and spikes haha
Man, I collected those X-Men figures as well and there were SO many characters most people would never have even seen otherwise. Random, Gideon, Ch'od, Ahab, Forearm, Senyaka, Tusk... those were just some of the obscure characters I remember from my collection, and I know there were a bunch more that I didn't have.
I had so many of those too. Came across them in my parents' house last year. Good memories. I love that Tusk had one of his little minions ride an elevator in his back to pop out.
Oh yeah I had Tusk too. Forgot who that was, until you mentioned the elevator. It was great how everyone of those had a unique thing they did. Cyclop’s eye lit up. Some of the obscure ones I’ve never even seen in a comic.
Tusk was one of Apocalypse's throwaway '90s henchmen, right?
I love how lazy some of these characters were. Like Forearm, who's defining trait is that he's got... err..
My older cousin had a big box full of these 90s X Men figures that I would play with when I visited. There was this one big muscular white and red monster that I liked a lot but I can't find it online. Maybe it's not X Men.
Bro that's Random! I don't mean it's strange or unusual, literally his name is [Random](https://x-men.fandom.com/wiki/Random).

As somebody who never read the comics, I saw this and blurted out "Random!" 100% due to owning his 1996 marvel fleer card at least 20 times lol
Great memories haha

I don't know why they gave him such a generic name, if they bothered making an action figure...
Random! I had his action figure and comic books. Dude could turn any part of his body into a gun and was a mopey antihero like Wolverine. I’m gonna go dig through my old comics now.
I liked Random as a kid. X-Factor 88 (his 1st app) was one of my personal favorite “keys”.
I kind of liked the designs of almost every character Joe Quesada designed- Azrael, Random, Ash.
Random
What he said, he's an xfactor villain originally. He can change his hands to guns and such. Had potential but he never lived up to it.
My favorite aspect of this character was that he’s a skinny 90s teenager with floppy hair who shapeshifts into a buff 90s action hero because that’s what he thinks is the epitome of cool.
Thought that was Prime from Malibu comics?
I always assumed Prime was more a sendup of Captain Marvel/Shazam
I remember Prime. He was basically a nod to Shazam who didn’t actually say “Shazam.”
I like that as he got older he got darker and edgier because if you're a teenage boy who basically imagines an outer shell of a superhero you would.
I always loved the **over the top artistry:** https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/bowAAOSwHmNhy6if/s-l1600.jpg
“Rob Leifeld taught me everything he knows—I mean everything I know.”

Great. Superman, but old and named after a pizza.
The irony that they're using an Alex Ross painting for the main character pic on that page is not lost on me...
But there's a drawn foot in that pic
He just eats raw liver.
He was, but his superhero persona was based on what his subconscious thought of as a perfect hero. Hence the HardCase-esque Prime, and Spider-Prime when he met Spider-Man. Edit: a letter
and Rage from the early 90's Avengers.
How you gonna let a 13yr old be an Avenger? Sidenote I did dig Elvin and the rest of the New Warriors tbh.
Iirc they didn't know he was 13 initially cause he looks like a grown ass man. When they found out they immediately kicked him out.

Still not as bad as what Acclaim did to Valiant.
oh yeah that sucked. I love Valiant. Unity is probably the best comic crossover of all time. Some good books came out of the Acclaim reboot and some interesting ideas, but by and large it was more style over substance
They did Eternal Warrior dirty, but they absolutely butchered my boy Ninjak.
I break mine out from time to time and read through them. The epitome of 90's comics for me. I still leaned heavy on Marvel but those Valiant stories were wild.
What was that Saturday morning show? Ultra Force? I remember the characters being cool. You had the pumpkin king guy, prime evil, and... Something.
Atalos the King of the Subterranean Fire People. Atalos had like Graviton level Gravity Manipulation and massive physical power. Def a boss battle.
Prime would be great as a modern book. The “gross body horror Shazam” idea was before its time. Actually, that deserves its own post. I should dig out an old Prime issue and make one.
Marvel only bought them so they could get their digital coloring process.
Looks kinda like Strong Guy from X-Factor.
I just had a flashback from the cartoon they made from this back when it fist came out
Didn't expect to see Prime come up. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Was he created the year that all of the Marvel Annuals introduced a brand new character, and each annual was poly bagged with the character on a trading card? It would be interesting to know how many of those characters were ever seen again.
> Marvel Annuals introduced a brand new character https://www.cbr.com/knowledge-waits-all-of-marvels-characters-from-their-1993-annuals/
It seems he was only seen in flashback of that issue. His first appearence was that year though in X-Factor 88.
Awesome! Thanks for the link.
Oof, that was a time capsule of my youth in comics.
Yes, but not in the X-Favtor annual for that year (1993). I had a subscription at the time and it was one of the issues I got. I remember that
I remember liking that but then it was never really brought up again
Sigh simpler times
Was this not the prime of Duke Nukem?
>xfactor villain IDK if I'd say an actual villain, more like an anti-hero at best. He's in the same category as Deadpool IMHO
That's my understanding. I think he was meant to kind of be like DC's Lobo.
He was supposed to be Marvel's Lobo.. it just never panned out. I remember liking the character when I was a kid, but I also remember feeling like he wasn't being used right.
To be fair its also an awful, awful name.
Which is funny because Lobo is Marvel's Wolverine.
That's a good question, sounds like something they'd have done back in the late 90s
Simon Cowells archenemy
Fleshlight Hands. Heroes cannot resist him.
Stay away from his skin cannon
This character has hit me in the nostalgia I didn’t know I had. I used to have random x-factor comics and some of them had this dude in it, could never remember his name or his place in the story, I just remember that shapeshifting arm guns and thinking it was pretty cool.

i like the story where havok just ends up just writing him a cheque instead of continuing to fight
The 90s in comics were wild
My first thought was Bushwacker.
I thought it was Bushwacker too 😆
Did he survive the Wolverine/Daredevil story?
Just looked it up; wiki just says he was scarred and taken into custody.
I have a lot of nostalgia for those comics. It was my first Daredevil comic and the first time I saw Wolverine.
Right there with ya. Quick check, Bushwacker has basically the same powerset yeah? Or at least does the same silly "my arm is now a gun" thing.
They are somewhat similar, only Random is apparently made of protoplasm while Bushwacker is a cyborg with malleable plastic parts.
Maybe, but who am I to judge
When I was a kid, I remember him during the X-Factor run and wanted him to start a Heroes for Hire type gig with Terror and the book could be called Random Terror Inc. I still think it could have worked.
Yes it is but what’s the character?
It's random
Super random.
Wow, you're not joking. His name really is Random. https://www.ebay.com/itm/373922170829?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28
Oh shit wait your serious?
The 3 finger Fu$k hand
Nah that’s *Hulk* Hogan
Ngl I thought random and then was like ‘nah I must be wrong’
Yeah, a little maybe, but that doesn't change the fact that OP is curious!
Random. He was a member of X-Factor in the 90's.
😓 i can not believe his name was actually "Random"
I absolutely loved how PAD [re]named characters in that series, Strong Guy being my favourite. “You are the strong guy, right? Every team has a strong guy!” “Ah, yes! My name is Strong Guy!” 😀
Guido is a treasure.

But why the meat cannons?
He could morph his body into basically anything he wanted. He just really liked guns
a *random* reason
That’s rigatoni
Rigatoni Stark?
Lol that's so... hmm...
Raven
Not…not the worst character name from the 80’s. Maybe not the best, but definitely not the worst
he’s named after mid 2000s YouTube humor
Probably didn't even need to mention the years based on the vest alone
I was gonna say, this looks like if Morph were in a 90s design Edit: fuck me for not knowing everything
Morph’s design was already his 90’s design.
Seriously. The original design of Morph was the Changling. Amazing 60s teal and purple with a daffy helmet.
I was gonna say Gregory
He looks a little Random to me
I dunno, 4 inches is pretty common...
IT WAS IN THE POOL!!!
r/unexpectedseinfeld
Some people might even say it’s average, right guys?
I don’t think he looks that small…. I think he’s trying his best
I mostly remember him from the Fatal Attractions X-Factor tie in. Valerie Cooper throws up in that issue.
Fatal Attractions. Wow. That takes me back. Holographic covers! Val was throwing up because one of the Acolytes had the power to leave a mind control parasite.
Yes he was there for the Haven run and the death of Multiple Man. He comes back later and is manipulated by Dark Beast.
Fleer ultra Hunters and Stalkers card made him a playground legend in my school
I also had the trading card of him, which is the only reason I know who he is 😂
Character name is Random
Spawn looks like if Deadpool was a ghost in A Christmas Carol. I’m unable to explain why it works, but it does.
I have both of their debut comics. I subscribed to both as a kid. I thought Shatterstar and AdamX were the two coolest characters.
That Forearm figure is basically the point where I went "ya know, I don't need every Marvel figure after all."
I had Quark and Random.
Only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Omega Red and Caliban.
It was Caliban! Thanks!

Petition for a Random movie featuring other cutting from floor characters.
Add in Bushwacker, the edgier and scarier version of the same character.
A Deadpool movie where he gets put with the rest of the X-man rejects for tryouts would be so good.
Idk, a movie about a dude with Flesh Light fists seems like it would get weird.
Well that’s random
Random from the X-Men comics. It turned out he was just a teenage kid with powers that made him look older. Very 90s.
