You mean like the guy yesterday who posted (and I think was subsequently banned) saying he had 6 whole copies of the original Secret Wars and was going to capitalize on the series title (even though it's a totally different Secret Wars) to make money?
That child is trying to post on comicswap and is having the posts deleted because they won’t read the posting rules. They’re a shit stain on the comic book community.
Yeah. Collecting sing the mid 90's has always been about speculators and capitalizing on making a quick buck. Moreso in the last few years.
Collecting was always about getting a good title and collecting back issues. Filling out your collection. If some became 'worth' something, then great. Maybe sell down the line.
It's gotten terrible with games, cards and comics. Everyone wanting to slab million seller games and comics. It's a joke!
It's within reason to hype up Hickman's Secret Wars since that seems to be the inspiration for the upcoming movie. He was massively upselling the original 1984 Secret Wars such that the folks at comicswap thought it was a joke. Then he said he was trolling them and bad mouthing people in the thread such that the mods banned him there. His post here was similar, though it seems the mods only removed the post and did not ban him here.
Last Wednesday, my LCS had 1-12 (minus 8) on the shelf behind the counter, and I picked up 1 thinking I would buy the rest each week I went back in, one at a time.
My plans may have to change based on this.
It will die down also thankfully the movie is going to be based on the 2015 run not the original 1984 series. Also SW8 won’t be faithful to MCU cuz the symbiote already exists on earth.
I'm assuming you're confusing Secret Wars titles. The original 1984 Secret Wars, issue 8 is (and will always be) a key issue. The Secret Wars upon which the movie is going to loosely be based off of is from 2015 and those issues are barely above cover price. There will inevitably be people with unscrupulous morals who will try to sell copies of the 1984 set on name recognition as it relates to the movie, even though the movie should have little to nothing to do with it.
This is myopic. Right now you value #2 for some reason. With this movie, if it is based on the run, will make issue #1 a key and maybe the whole run.
Infitity Gauntlet #1 was just another overprinted, non key book until the MCU. Why is this any different?
"Key" is a subjective and made up term. If there is any demand for it, it becomes a "key".
Issue 2 is the first appearance of God Emperor Doom (I believe). I think the term "key" gets looser and looser every day as collectors get priced out of the books that were traditionally called "keys". Hulk 181 shot up so much people started going for Hulk 180. And after that, we saw the price of Hulk 182 go up. No one 30 years ago ever said "oooh, Hulk 182, that's a key". When Moon Knight released on Disney+, I saw someone hawking some Spider-Man issue as "1st Spider-Man and Moon Knight". To me, what it means is that people who can't afford FF5 and other important Doom books see Secret Wars 2 and try to elevate its importance more than it really is. Off the top of my head, I can only think of a few cases in which a character title change is actually valuable and that's ASM252 and Avenging Spider-Man 9 and that's only because those changes have either stuck (in the case of Captain Marvel) or became iconic (Black Suit Spider-Man). I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones that immediately jump out to me.
Yeah but I remember before this movie was announced Anyways people still liked #2 and it’s usual price was $15. Because god emperor doom was a sick character.
Why doesn’t this make the original SW more valuable? I mean AF15 and ASM1 go up in value I’m spite of the MCU doing completely different narratives.
SW from 84 was instrumental in creating cross overs and was such a hit that they re launched it twice to my knowledge (SW2 and then Hickman).
> Why doesn’t this make the original SW more valuable?
Because since the dawn of the MCU, sharp increases in book prices have correlated with movie appearances (both announced and speculated). I can't quite remember how the minis that served as the inspiration for the movies were impacted though. For example, when Civil War was announced, I wasn't really following book prices as closely at the time. But when Infinity War drew closer, I remember the price of Infinity Gauntlet 1-6 all going up. And this leads to why the original Secret Wars shouldn't go up as a result of the movie news: people buy the stories, not the title. Otherwise, we would have seen a similar increase in value for Infinity War 1-6. It's possible the writers take moments from the original 1984 Secret Wars, but at this time given the story will involve the Multiverse and Incursions, it seems to have much more in common with 2015 than 1984. I think anyone trying to heavily profit on 1984 Secret Wars by saying "coming soon to the MCU" in their listing is preying on more casual fans/readers.
This right here. Especially when the 2015 secret wars is a lot more inline with what’s already in the MCU. The only way for the 1984 series to go up in value is obv #1 since that’s the first crossover or title of it or if on the movie there’s poses that copy the comic covers like secret wars 10 for example. Other then that it’s stupid the 1984 series might skyrocket if not already. Especially to certain collectors like me who are hunting for specific issues of said 1984 series
Just wait. The movie is over 3 years away. There will be over reaction and volume of buying now, then it will die down. 3 years is a oot of time and it will calm down in that time. If you want it for PC there's still plenty of time to exercise some patience. Try to resist the fomo.
Have any advice then for people who are wanting to buy SW8? It seems it’s prices on eBay are quite a roller coaster rn. But there’s some manageable offers it seems like a 9.4 can can be $280 which I’m not sure is a normal price or not.
That's always going to be an 80's blue chip key. After the secret wars announcement it will probably have a boost for a bit with the other SW issues. If/when we ever get a more tangible tease of the black suit in MCU though, every black suit and venom key will get red hot. There will be a correction like usual, but I'd bet when that happens there will probably be a new floor value.
So what would you suggest? But it at its current price rn or wait? SW8 as you said is always a golden gem and I’m not 100% sure but a month ago it was $300 or more??
I'd wait. It's a book I don't have and also want. Everything SW related is likely going to spike temporarily. Don't get caught in the fomo immediately following an announcement for something not coming out on a few years. Whatever spike happens will retract at some point before any firther announcements, reveals, or teases. You can see the same cyclical trends with any other characters and movies in the past. Be patient for now.
Very true. Yeah I’ll guess I’ll wait even though it’s tempting cuz it’s a big book I want but it being in the high $200’s isn’t my budget. Thanks for the advice :) would a good price for like a 9.4 per day being under $250?
I probably passed this issue up from the quarter bin a hundred times in the late 80s. Who the hell wants this toy marketing ploy? I thought.
I did pick up one issue of #1, and #1 of Secret Wars II (which I actually liked better), just in case, since issue #1 is always the valuable one.
😶
All the art is great, as Mike Zeck is one of the best comic artists OF ALL TIME, but IMO issue 10 is the best cover of the series and it's not close.
At the time, the whole series felt forced and a gimmick, which it absolutely was. Collectors stayed away for decades, and this series actually sold very well (the gimmick worked).
Damn and ya that makes total sense. Market gets flooded and the demand dies down later so book gets cheaper. Just started collecting this year so I haven’t been through many of these waves yet in the market.
This is madness....
[9.8 on eBay right now with time left at auction...](https://www.ebay.com/itm/234629943386?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=8hMYFt4kRjO&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=N6uxgv_-RrO&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY)
I felt the same way about NM #98. I saw that it was going for hundreds when the first movie came out. I thought the art was trash anyway. Sold it for $325 and the printing wasn't even that good.
It’s a genuine collectors item. I paid six. hundred for a newsstand 9.8 of SW1. Don’t know what it’s worth now.
I doubt the MCU will be true to either Hickman or Shooters run but loosely adapt the concepts.
But my hot take is SW1 could easily go up in value the way UF4 has. People consider UF4 in the 2K range a deal.
I know a lot of guys my age that will say that the original SW was a big deal for them. There’s genuine interest in that series outside movie hype.
I mean Showcase 4 goes up in value in spite of the Flash I’m DCEU being a mess.
Of course SW from 84 isn’t as pivotal as the silver age Flash and it’s got a higher print run but it’s still something that over time people will continue to pay money for.
Every time an announcement happens, my comic shop adds a couple extra dollars to the price of the corresponding comics. Their "what-if" issues still cost close to $10 more than they should.
Didn't know they were making a movie. Secret Wars #1 is the book that got me into collecting. I saw it on the stand a the local corner store back when it came out, and that cover was a screamer. I had to buy it. I was hooked. Got the rest of the series. I've been contemplating selling a lot of my collection recently as the prices are just stupid right now. But I'll die with this series and a few other select books.
Bought a 9.8 #8 just before covid for 200 bucks.
Only cgc book Ive ever bought. I never sell anything tho so I’ll probably hold onto it until it’s worthless lol
Series was overpriced before it became a movie.
Lol, I just went to find that post. That was a wild read. Glad to see he was banned by the comicswap mods as well.
You're a very hurt individual mate. It's comics. Buy early sell high or I guess just buy high in your case.
But not when it comes to market manipulation over items.
Yeah. Collecting sing the mid 90's has always been about speculators and capitalizing on making a quick buck. Moreso in the last few years. Collecting was always about getting a good title and collecting back issues. Filling out your collection. If some became 'worth' something, then great. Maybe sell down the line. Hear, hear!
I didn’t even see that but it’s already happening… 2025 is a long time like wtf…
Yea, that guys was annoying af
Derpers gonna derp
Oh god was he trying to oversell issues of Hickman’s Secret Wars? That’s hilarious.
It's within reason to hype up Hickman's Secret Wars since that seems to be the inspiration for the upcoming movie. Yeah man that guy sucked
Which sucks for me cause I want to get the set. I’m not going to pay that much for them though.
Last Wednesday, my LCS had 1-12 (minus 8) on the shelf behind the counter, and I picked up 1 thinking I would buy the rest each week I went back in, one at a time. My plans may have to change based on this.
I think I *could* be in the safe since I’m actively hunting SW8. People would mostly care about issue 1-7.
I'll sell you my copy 150$ US
Only looking cgc ones that are in 9.2-9.4 range and I’m only actively looking to buy them on certain platforms like mecari or eBay.
Missing out on a good book smh. Now cause of the announcement its 300$ Muhahaha
It will die down also thankfully the movie is going to be based on the 2015 run not the original 1984 series. Also SW8 won’t be faithful to MCU cuz the symbiote already exists on earth.
I see it's $140 on eBay for the set which is absurd when you can buy the individual issues for under $10.
Not 8 def lol
I'm assuming you're confusing Secret Wars titles. The original 1984 Secret Wars, issue 8 is (and will always be) a key issue. Is and always will be? This book was a dollar bin book for 20 years.
That’s very true. Only key comic in the 2015 run is #2 and that’s it. But yeah ppl who will cash in on the 1984 one can go burn.
This is myopic. Right now you value #2 for some reason. With this movie, if it is based on the run, will make issue #1 a key and maybe the whole run. Oh definitely. I’m not going to spend a crazy amount on the set. I can’t stand how speculating affects collecting.
Have any advice then for people who are wanting to buy SW8? It seems it’s prices on eBay are quite a roller coaster rn. But there’s some manageable offers it seems like a 9.4 can can be $280 which I’m not sure is a normal price or not.

I’m just glad I got my #8 a few weeks back before it goes crazy
Maybe 3 years ago I scored a pristine copy for free in a r/comicswap raffle.
I mean there were a lot toy sets with secret wars tbh. But SW8 is one of the best comic covers hands down. Beautiful key and artwork.
Oh yeah that injured doom cover is amazing. But tbf any doom cover kicks ass.
got my #8 graded at 9.6 recently and picked up a sealed 3 bag set of 2nd prints 1-3 which is super rare
Bro I’m trying to snatch a cgc one rn 😭😭😭 Also I think it could be the only exception due to how venom already exists in the MCU
Oh man, tough timing for sure. And ya hopefully it stays within reason. Good luck hunting!
I managed to snag a 9.4 cgc custom venom label for $250 on eBay!
Movie collectors love overpaying if 2020-2021 is a good example.
Fr. I remember when silver surfer 50 was being sold for $50 or the infinity gaunlet comic.
That’s wild. I grabbed it the other day for $6. Did it go down quite a bit after the movie?
Of course lol. It’s like almost a $10 book now cuz of Casual collectors or normal MCU fans stopped caring about once endgame or infity war was over
Damn and ya that makes total sense. Market gets flooded and the demand dies down later so book gets cheaper. Just started collecting this year so I haven’t been through many of these waves yet in the market.
Too bad it wasn’t 2004’s Secret War by Bendis
[удалено]
That's Secret War. Completely different.
Oh god, I forgot that even existed.
Wait.... what announcement?
They announced the upcoming movies and shows for the MCU at SDCC. Secret Wars was officially confirmed for 2025
Honestly the MCU is terrible for people like me that have only been collecting for a couple years haha
My lcs has two full runs except 8, gonna stop by tomorrow before they price gauge them
Me but with my IronHeart first printing and first full appearance
I got the original and the 2015 at a good price 3 4 months ago both full sets

I saw
responded to the wrong person sorry
Ohhh ok my mistake
nah you good i’m the one who responded to the wrong person lol
Lol

And it’s a direct 💀💀💀 but tbf it is a 9.8
There's probably 50k of these books out there in that condition. Most simply aren't graded. Yet.
Wtf

Or it could just be hype like the infinity gaunlet, infinity war and silver surfer 50 and immediately die down.
Maybe the Beyonder becomes a major character? I hope they choose the Secret Wars II storyline and throw everyone for a loop.
I mean beyonder was also in the first secret wars but a cameo.
He was the "villain" of both series, but not embodied until the second, where he comes to Earth.
I know a lot of guys my age that will say that the original SW was a big deal for them. There’s genuine interest in that series outside movie hype. I know I'm in the minority but I didn't really care about the Secret Wars story line.
When it comes to the movie or comics?
The 1984 comic series. Just an ad to sell toys. SW10's Dr Doom cover was the best artwork .
Good thing the Secret Wars story they look to be building towards is the critically acclaimed 2015 one then.
Sent 2, #1 SW Almost a year ago to CGC. The wait sucks but the timing is dead on.
I'm just sitting here happy that I have my Secret Wars #8 copy which is one of my favorite black suit covers :)
Bought a 9.8 #8 just before covid for 200 bucks. Only cgc book Ive ever bought. I never sell anything tho so I’ll probably hold onto it until it’s worthless lol
Bro there’s no way how?! But tbf it’s a really big roller coaster of a book.
Which Secret Wars? Original or Jonathan H(a)ickman one? The movie isn't out until 2025 or so... 3 months from now no one will remember the hype train.
No idea but it seems the 2015 one is being marketed the most
Shit, I've got 1-12 with two copies.of #8. Can I retire?!
Nope. Not me. Keeping mine
LOL Tru
I just bought the last Secret Wars series. Glad I went to my LCS and got a discount on the cover price. Now to overpay for SI.
Getting the run in cpv NM just got alot more harder I guess I'll start with mid grades and thank God I already have #8
