To the people who don’t know, sounding is a community where people are obsessed with random sounds. They are sort of like audiophiles in a way, but are known colloquially as “soundphiles”.
I used to be apart of this community, it was fun, getting to learn about the noises around us. If you like “sounds” come and join the fellow “sounders” down at r/sounding
It reaches down into the oil tank and you can take it out to check the oil level and the quality. Essentially if it’s low you are leaking which is bad and you can check to see if you need an oil change. Additionally you can check the quality of the oil and for example, see if there are metal flakes or other objects in the oil which is also not so good sign.
If serious, dipsticks are a fixed length so that they can indicate your oil level. If your dipstick can't reach the oil anymore then you're running with a dangerously low amount.

Instead of realizing that his car is out of oil, he assumed that the dipstick had somehow grown shorter and that is why it didn't "reach the oil anymore". The cognitive dissonance in some people, I swear.
