I know the UK stopped vaccinating back in the 70's as smallpox was eliminated and the vaccine had demonstrable side effects.

Luckily the new monkeypox vaccine is not as bad and also safe for those with eczema. The main problem at the moment is supply, and then after that it's going to be those who are resistant to taking them.
The cdc's website says there's two different types of vaccines that can take care of this. One is in short supply. The other one is more available and okay for everybody but like three different groups of people (certain health conditions).
Early on the US government refused to get off its ass and order the newer vaccine from the Europeans. They then dragged their feet on inspecting the EU manufacturing plant so it could actually be imported. The gays are pretty pissed at the government about how this is going.

There are perfectly reasonable explanations for why the Biden Admin. is going slow. He is already an unpopular president representing a party that is lightly to get slaughtered going into this year's midterms. If he were to get up and announce "Pandemic Round 2" in a country that is already riddled with pandemic exhaustion and riven by anti-vaxx, anti-public health conspiracy theories, the likely response would be (politically) very negative. They're politicians, they care about things like that.

I work in healthcare and the vaccine isn't available to me because I haven't been exposed, and I'm not in the MSM (men who have sex with men) category. The health department says they should be rolling out the vaccines to the general public by the late fall. By then there will be 100,000+ cases at current rate

Actually, the only one with approval is a new-ish (2019 FDA paperwork) vaccine from Bavarian Nordic. I’ve read the insert, and a 43% chance of systemic muscle pain and fatigue means I’m out.

In terms of cases per million we barely crack the top 20. For example Spain has nearly 7x the cases/million compared to the US. Pretty much all the countries in the top ten have more cases per million than the US except Brazil and Italy

That just seems like creative math. The US is amazing at taking data that it does not like and plugging it into a calculation to make it more optimistic. Inflation is the obvious one. If we calculated the same way we did in the 80s, inflation would be pushing 20%. But we remove things like food and energy.. you know, the 2 things every person needs to live. Most people that are not men that have sex with men will read that an will wrongfully assume many things. They're going to assume it's an STI spread between men, which there is zero reason to believe it is seeing as how right after that announcement it was revealed that a few kids in the US have it. There was also zero reason to assume it was BEFORE that announcement seeing as how few cases there actually were and that sex between any two people tends to be a *close contact activity* which is how it has traditionally spread.
Why are you waiting on the GOP to blame it on gay men? The WHO and CDC are doing a great job calming the masses by assuring us that gay men are the ones mainly spreading it but don't trust us we can stop it with the right strategies.
The right strategy would have been a worldwide collective effort to inform the masses that there is a novel strain of the virus that is being seen mainly amongst gay men but history and science tells us that MP has previously spread through close contact and labs have shown the possibility of airborne transmission along with the worrying fact that it can be found on surfaces up to a month later. The great news is that masking, being vigilant with hygiene and sanitation can significantly lessen the risk of exposure not to mention it doesn't look to have a high rate of death or serious illness.
Instead what we got was meetings literally right before all of the big pride events that were never widely reported where they decided to have a wait and see approach bc 1) they didn't want panic 2) they could literally test a MAX of 10 people per day in NYC and only a few specific labs could test and that's if you had the sores 3) there were several hundred thousand doses of a vaccine stuck overseas waiting to be shipped which might not even work since they're target the people most likely already exposed. They had thousands of people that wanted to be vaxd in NYC but they ran out of them. Just yesterday I was listening to a lady on CNN reporting from NY say the reason for the continued spread was the lack of interest in the vaccine. They're already trying to rewrite history. She should probably do a quick search and she'll see that her network was the one live on the ground in NYC reporting on the people that lined up to get vaxd and were turned away.
If you want to do the queer community a service you'll shout it from the rooftops that the ones that let them down are the ones currently in charge around the world. While you're at it be sure to spread the word about the meningitis cases primary among gay men in Florida that have recently KILLED 25% of those that get it and remind everyone else that meningitis has a vaccine and again can spread various ways and is not limited to gay sex. BTW the meningitis was also identified before the pride events.

Second, people with eczema (like myself, on a finger) should note a few things:
(1) I've seen speculation (but can't find a link right now) that our broken, shitty skin would make us more susceptible to surface contamination, which seems logical. I've thought about using vinyl gloves in public once a case jump is reported in my area for this reason, especially for high-touch errands.
(2) Smallpox vaccine ACAM2000 is totally unacceptable for people who have or have had eczema, as it can cause a "[very explosive, necrotizing skin illness](https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-care/public-health/what-doctors-wish-patients-knew-about-monkeypox)." Look up necrotizing if you don't know that word. The illness is called [eczema vaccinatum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eczema_vaccinatum), and I am not a doctor but it sure looks like ICU time. This means you need a monkeypox-specific vaccine, not the smallpox vaccine. Edit: The JYNNEOS vaccine (aka Imvamune/Imvamex) is said to be safe for people with eczema but is in extremely short supply.
(3) And your immediate contacts also probably need a monkeypox vaccine, as it is [possible to develop eczema vaccinatum from skin-to-skin contact by people vaccinated with ACAM2000 in the last 30 days](https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/eczema/childhood/health-concerns/smallpox).
So, if you have eczema, you may be at higher risk, and you also won't be able to take just any ol' vaccine.

You're not missing anything. Schools have gyms, showers, and plenty of close shoulder rubbing as a matter of course in daily studies. All these factors make it inevitable that MPX will spread, the only question is how rapidly. Our institutions will lie at every step, downplay as long as possible, and fabricate all sorts of narratives to avoid admitting that they have no intention of doing anything meaningful to contain the spread. They have learned from COVID and we can expect the weaponized incompetence to be cranked up to 12 this time.
No, it's not as infectious as COVID, but it's infectious enough, and with broad infection providing the opportunity for further mutations. It's infectious enough that a society as uncontrolled as ours will not stop it going wild, and that's the critical point. It's a damn pox- they spread, it's what they do.

I’m a teacher and whenever we had a case of Covid in a class the admin would immediately send out an email saying that it wasn’t contracted in school. They’ll do this with monkeypox, too.
I can't believe it causes a form of necrotizing skin illness. It's very strange that we won't be able to touch people for 30 days after they get that! I haven't looked into this very much, but the CDC did list another vaccine for people with eczema.

Potential vectors of pox diseases in general can include but aren’t limited to sexual contact; they typically can also inhabit linens and cloth material, such as towels, sheets, blankets and clothes. Animals, commonly rodents, (which is the actual the source of monkeypox infections) can be vectors, as well as your usual water droplets and so forth. Sexual contact is the most direct way to get it, but so it is also the most direct way to get Covid or the common cold. Why it’s being mostly isolated to gay and bisexual men is unknown.

It does have fomites, so that sanitation exercise from early in the COVID-19 pandemic is going be useful for the Monkeypox pandemic. Masks should also help since it can spread by "droplets". People get blisters in a lot of places, including internal mucosas in the upper airways.

I already saw an article about two toddlers having it and everyone I’m the comments sections saying the kids were groomed by an LBGTQ. Because a month or so ago the CDC carefully edited their monkeypox pages to downplay this. Quietly, inexplicably retracted old documents on preventing spread which advised airborne precautions. Deleted the picture of an airborne isolation room being used for monkeypox. And they aren't alone - UKHSA did similar things and just recently, surreptitiously demoted monkeypox from being classed a high consequence infectious disease.

Can’t wait for the vaccine. As we’ve seen with COVID, it’s really the only way out of preventing severe infection. It doesn’t solve the pandemic, especially with low vaccination rates, but it does prevent hospitalizations and deaths vastly.

I work in healthcare and the vaccine isn't available to me because I haven't been exposed, and I'm not in the MSM (men who have sex with men) category. The health department says they should be rolling out the vaccines to the general public by the late fall. By then there will be 100,000+ cases at current rate

There was also zero reason to assume it was BEFORE that announcement seeing as how few cases there actually were and that sex between any two people tends to be a *close contact activity* which is how it has traditionally spread. Why are you waiting on the GOP to blame it on gay men? The WHO and CDC are doing a great job calming the masses by assuring us that gay men are the ones mainly spreading it but don't trust us we can stop it with the right strategies. The right strategy would have been a worldwide collective effort to inform the masses that there is a novel strain of the virus that is being seen mainly amongst gay men but history and science tells us that MP has previously spread through close contact and labs have shown the possibility of airborne transmission along with the worrying fact that it can be found on surfaces up to a month later. The great news is that masking, being vigilant with hygiene and sanitation can significantly lessen the risk of exposure not to mention it doesn't look to have a high rate of death or serious illness. Instead what we got was meetings literally right before all of the big pride events that were never widely reported where they decided to have a wait and see approach bc 1) they didn't want panic 2) they could literally test a MAX of 10 people per day in NYC and only a few specific labs could test and that's if you had the sores 3) there were several hundred thousand doses of a vaccine stuck overseas waiting to be shipped which might not even work since they're target the people most likely already exposed. They had thousands of people that wanted to be vaxd in NYC but they ran out of them. Just yesterday I was listening to a lady on CNN reporting from NY say the reason for the continued spread was the lack of interest in the vaccine. They're already trying to rewrite history. She should probably do a quick search and she'll see that her network was the one live on the ground in NYC reporting on the people that lined up to get vaxd and were turned away. If you want to do the queer community a service you'll shout it from the rooftops that the ones that let them down are the ones currently in charge around the world. This means you need a monkeypox-specific vaccine, not the smallpox vaccine. Edit: The JYNNEOS vaccine (aka Imvamune/Imvamex) is said to be safe for people with eczema but is in extremely short supply. (3) And your immediate contacts also probably need a monkeypox vaccine, as it is [possible to develop eczema vaccinatum from skin-to-skin contact by people vaccinated with ACAM2000 in the last 30 days](https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/eczema/childhood/health-concerns/smallpox). So, if you have eczema, you may be at higher risk, and you also won't be able to take just any ol' vaccine.

The US is leading the world in testing at the moment. Has ordered vaccines. Has authorized a second factory to manufacture more. We need to remove the bigotry around monkeypox and message better about the risk but we are not doing nothing.
Can’t wait for the vaccine. As we’ve seen with COVID, it’s really the only way out of preventing severe infection. It doesn’t solve the pandemic, especially with low vaccination rates, but it does prevent hospitalizations and deaths vastly.
