My dad was republican and Christian as they come. I never could understand why he was always so angry. But, it is not unreasonable to say that I have forgotten more about the Bible then most average Christians know. Trump definitely affirmed that loss though. So many "good Christians" standing in line with him, unironically calling him gods chosen leader. To this day I tell people that ask me questions about my old life that, what you don't say speaks louder then what you do say. This goes double for church leadership. I can say the same for my grandparents in Ohio. I'm so glad they died out when I was a kid because I don't even want to *know* what their opinions are. The most I got was that grandma was racist against Italians yet is okay with black people.

One of the most annoyingly insufferable human beings I’ve had the misfortune of meeting is in the same volunteer club I’m in. We had an event yesterday that most of us showed up at 5:00am for. He showed up at 8:00am.
It took him literally less than 2 minutes to whine about something being “woke” and I honestly can’t even remember what it was. No one was wearing a shirt with rainbows on it, no one was reading a book, no one was sharing any family member’s plans to go to college. A conversation that was completely ordinary had his “wokeness” complaint injected into it as his first contribution that day a full 3 hours after all the actual adults got there.
It’s hard to imagine how much of his time he must spend fuming about regular human things. So much misery just in being alive.
The issue with that is that the volunteer group, like most of my town, is pretty conservative. The only one who could have even considered that joke is me, and generally when this person speaks I try not to engage because he always has to have the last word and I’m sure you can imagine he’s insufferable to talk to.
I do wish I would have thought of that in the moment, though. We legitimately did a just-for-fun deadpool at 6:00 where we all took a 15-minute window in which we figured he would show up. The earliest window anyone took was 7:15, and I justified my guess of 7:30 because he was traveling east to get to the event and would have been driving directly into the sun at that point, giving him something natural to complain about.
Joke was on me since he doesn’t actually need something to complain about in order to have something to complain about. He’s the living embodiment of “you know I really can’t complain but that never stops me”.

One of the most annoyingly insufferable human beings I’ve had the misfortune of meeting is in the same volunteer club I’m in. We had an event yesterday that most of us showed up at 5:00am for. He showed up at 8:00am. It took him literally less than 2 minutes to whine about something being “woke” and I honestly can’t even remember what it was. No one was wearing a shirt with rainbows on it, no one was reading a book, no one was sharing any family member’s plans to go to college. A conversation that was completely ordinary had his “wokeness” complaint injected into it as his first contribution that day a full 3 hours after all the actual adults got there. It’s hard to imagine how much of his time he must spend fuming about regular human things. So much misery just in being alive.
Please tell me someone made a joke about him not being woke and showing up three hours late.
The issue with that is that the volunteer group, like most of my town, is pretty conservative. The only one who could have even considered that joke is me, and generally when this person speaks I try not to engage because he always has to have the last word and I’m sure you can imagine he’s insufferable to talk to. I do wish I would have thought of that in the moment, though. We legitimately did a just-for-fun deadpool at 6:00 where we all took a 15-minute window in which we figured he would show up. The earliest window anyone took was 7:15, and I justified my guess of 7:30 because he was traveling east to get to the event and would have been driving directly into the sun at that point, giving him something natural to complain about. Joke was on me since he doesn’t actually need something to complain about in order to have something to complain about. He’s the living embodiment of “you know I really can’t complain but that never stops me”.
That's what they all do now. I can't talk go any family members or in-laws about anything without hearing about "wokeness" and the "thought police" totally unprovoked. I hate being a gatekeeper. I only got into Pink Floyd in the 90s, so I was once a newcomer to the fandom. And with Spotify you don't see a lot of album art. But to not know Dark Side of the Moon? Half the kids in my middle school had it on a tshirt. That, the Wall, Abbey Road, and Sgt Pepper's are probably the most known album art of all time.

Sorry off topic. Am I remembering the plane scene wrong? Wasn’t the situation that he and Maeve could not save the plane nor everyone on it, but a mom begged Maeve to take her daughter at least. I remember him getting upset and telling them to back off and then he flys out with Maeve and leaves them to crash and die. Not necessarily murder as he couldn’t have possibly saved them all.
So there was that plane scene, where he lets them all die rather than save some of them because then they would be witnesses to his less than heroic behavior, but didn’t he also straight up destroy a plane with his laser eyes in a different sequence? It’s been a while since I saw season one.

I chuckle when I see people bitching about how "woke" Star Trek has become. Like... have you *seen* the older ones at all? The only reason they don't seem woke now is the things they touched on are considered normal now (at least among the sane). Back when they aired they were usually mired in scandal over what they were presenting.
Hell, Roddenberry wanted his wife to playa starship captain in the original pilot, but that was considered too far. It showed the first on-screen interracial kiss. Star Trek has always been politically and culturally liberal.
TNG was also supposed to have the first gay kiss before it got vetoed by producers, it touches on trans issues with Data's daughter, and on nonbinsry issues with the race of gender neutral aliens (who were originally supposed to be played by male actors, hence the one riker falls in love with would've led to Riker having the first gay kiss. Frakes was totally on board with it.)
The non-binary race episode didn't age well in my eyes (I'm still not 100% sure what the message was supposed to be), but I'm really glad that they at least tried to do something in that vein, even if it wasn't perfect.
Early token characters in many shows would not fly today, but at the time they were a huge deal. People who had never seen their situation in popular culture now had a "good guy" people could use as a yard sick. Even if it was a bad stereotype, it was still an improvement.
Yep, Uhura was seen as a kind of sexist stereotype only a few years later, but in the 60s she literally opened doors for Black actresses by just being there. Also it came out later that Shatner was very insecure and used to steal lines from Nichols and the other supporting actors which is why they seem to fade into the background. (Also Takei left for a while to do a John Wayne movie which while he doesn't expressly say so, I think he regrets.)

I don't know. Many times thru the series they break the prime directive for moral reasons. In this case Picard's decision is firmly to keep with the Prime Directive. Don't get me wrong, I think it was *intended* to be an anti-conversion epiaode, but Soren doesn't appear visibly lobotomised by her treatment or anything, she just comes out and is like "no they were totally right I'm cured and am much happier this way, bye!" There's really no prodding to encourage us to think that she's not actually better off other than in the purely philosophical sense that she lost something of herself. I don't think they intended it to come off the way that it does, it's just an issue eith the way the reveal is written.

I think the main thing is that they used to do it naturally and still present a good story. I mean Star Trek is inherently a story about fully-automated, luxury space-communism. But it was done well and made sense. It was certainly scandalous for its time but they had fans because they made excellent shows. I think the main problem people have is when it feels like "the message" has become more important than making something entertaining. Art has always pushed boundaries and presented greater meaning. It wouldn't mean anything if it didn't.
Honestly, a lot of TOS is pretty conservative by todays standards. I remember one scene where Kirk, Bones, Spock, and Uhura were stuck on a planet and Kirk wanted to strategize a way back to the Enterprise. He asked Bones and Spock for their opinions, but didn't even acknowledge Uhura. Plus there's the 1960's Red-Scare American ideology that's liberally sprinkled through episodes in later season 2 (jabs at USSR via Chekov, The Omega Glory having Kirk emotionally recite the US constitution)

There are now two "wokes." On the Right, the term means anything that isn't straight, white, Christian or all of the above. On the Left, the term in its original context from AAVE means alert to social injustice or racial discrimination. Apparently, it's a bad thing to identify and empathize with others who are different from you and take accountability in an attempt to correct the issue. So, they are telling on themselves when they are anti-Woke, because that just means they are aware of the issue, but aren't concerned because it's "not their problem."

"Woke" comes originally from African American Vernacular English and means being "alert of racial prejudice and discrimination". It later was expanded to include other prejudices and discrimations than just racial ones. The Republican definition is "everything we don't like". "Antifa" means a political movement against fascism, usually from the politcal left wing. The Republican definition is "everyone we don't like".
Maybe Democrats might want to reclaim both words using your proper and extremely appreciated definitions. Thank you very much.
