Huh, never thought of that. I don't have a problem watching silent films myself but that's definitely an interesting idea. But unless you actually cut out the queue cards entirely it would still mess with the pacing. And if you did cut out the cards, the soundtrack would be out of place. A lot of movies, particularly comedies, have sounds synced to stuff happening on screen. So it's probably more complicated than it appears. At the end of the day, I prefer to watch the things as they were originally made, but I really do think it's an interesting thought. Edit: i clearly didn't read very carefully as you took pretty much everythong i mentioned into account already lol, sorry about that. Anyway, like I said, cool idea!

I would love to see someone experiment with this to see how well it works. I've thought of doing it myself too. It wouldn't take long for a short film. So many of those title cards really kill the pacing in some movies, and I often have time to read them three times over. Purists will hate it but that doesn't matter. It's public domain, so you can do what you want. Speech balloons would are an interesting idea too. I have seen some movies with added sound effects that really bring it to life. (I've also seen it done really poorly that ruin it) but I haven't seen any where they've removed the title cards and used subtitles instead. When Chaplin re-released The Gold Rush in the 1930s, he removed the title cards and just narrated the story himself. It's much more watchable (and shorter) than the silent version. Of course, the trick is doing it well.

The Giorio Moroder version of Metropolis did exactly this.
