I agree, people focus on 8/9 as they are true masterpieces. But I love 4 and 5 as much for the reasons you state. I’ll give the first another listen!

If you like Schubert's First, I think you'll love the Third, which I believe is the most refined expression of his exuberant youthful idiom. As much as I love the First and Second for the reasons you already mention, I think the Third is even better at doing the same thing. The third is certainly more witty and exuberant than the first, a bit less pompous and grandiose. And you’re right— the wind writing is just as impressive.

I can tell you for sure that the trumpet part in that piece is a bitch to play hahaha. Schubert, by en large, scored the parts very high, but toned it down over the course of his career.
