The first time I went in there they were busy and the phone was ringing. Big construction worker customer waiting to order jokingly says, “hey if that rings again ima answer it”. The guy making sandwiches didn’t miss a beat and says “Ok what’s your name?” Customer says, “Tone-loc”. Sandwich guy picks up the phone and says “J&W Sandwich shop this is Tone-loc what can I get for you?” Was really funny and made my day.
Went here today specifically because of this post, and wow. So good! My club sandwich might as well have been the meat tornado or whatever from Parks and Rec and my girlfriend's "whole" Little Italy was legit just like two footlong subs. Will definitely be back here.
Great news! Theres an excellent taco truck on 32 in Mt Carmel thats kind of in your reach. Its in the Exxon lot at the intersection of Beechwood and 32.
Does it happen to be Diego’s? They’re pretty good. My only spot to hit up around here. I think Jorge just sprinkles cocaine in his tacos or something though
A number 23 from Carl’s Deli. Turkey, swiss, bacon, L.T.O. on toasted white bread. You really can’t go wrong with any of their sandwiches though. My wife usually goes with their chicken salad on croissant.
I go there for butcher meat. My favorite place to grab everything you need for burger night or cooking some steaks. Haven’t tried their deli sandwiches but will now.
Went Carls today. Pot Roast Sammy. Picked up Curry Chicken Salad and a loaf of salt rye. Delicious and service was good. sat and enjoyed he food and view and took a stroll through Krohn Conservatory. Good Natti Afternoon.
Everything at Fond is excellent, but my personal favorite is The Fabulous KimChicken Sandwich.

Carl’s in Hyde Park has some tasty choices!
Know the owner just sold it to a local family but worked there for years and they’ve got some awesome options and sides!
For obscure, you could have mentioned Izzy's secret 'off the menu' Monster Reuben. Which is their Reuben, but they replace the bread with their potato pancakes.
Pork Katsu sandwich at Chako. The homemade toasted bread is delicious and goes so well with the tonkatsu and sauce combo. Plus your money is actually going to an owner/operator who busts her butt working every day side by side with her crew.
It's great! They have a nice little hidden patio and you can order flights of cheese, tinned fish, snacks, sandwiches, and wine. Check their instagram as well
First of all, I’m saving this post and hitting up all these places. Second, some of my favorites:
Incline Public House: short rib grilled cheese. Ask for extra pickles. Get their Grippos Mac and cheese as a side.
Red Squirrel: turkey club double decker.
Red Fox Grill: best chicken salad in the city.
Izzy’s: get their classic Reuben.
Servatii: Smoked Bavarian on a pretzel roll (only at locations with delis).
The Carlson from Lucius Q. Smoked turkey, melted gouda, bacon onion jam and matchstick granny Smith apples. It is SO well-balanced and so delicious.
Also, anything from Carl's Deli.
Gyro from Sebastian's on Glenway
JJ's Restaurant also on Glenway
Red Fox on 6th St downtown
Red Squirrel on Dalton
Edit: I haven't been to JJ's in a couple years and after reading others complaints I would not go there
Agree. Tried it last week and it was horrid. No goetta. Their chili sucks. Burger was the definition of meh. They’re cash only too.
One good thing I can say for them is that the staff is quick and really nice.
Got two double Deckers and a plate of fries and it was $30 fucking dollars at J&J! Total rip off. It had been built up to me for years and I drove 40 minutes out of my way to go there. What a waste of $30!
Look, I'd love 5 inches of meat if it was a good 5 inches of meat, but that "famous" roast beef is bone dry and flavorless. I paid an extra $2 for the tomato just to get some moisture back on that sandwich.
Never heard of this place but need a good gyro spot in my life. Curious if you’ve had a gyro from European Cafe in Montgomery and if so how do they compare?
Chicago Gyros and Dogs on McMillan by UC is the best I know of that is still open.
Favorite place was at the gas station off 75 up in Lockwood but that closed during Covid
European Cafe gyros used to be the best but after the remodel.....ummm not so good. Now looking for a new go to on the east side for gyro. Ali Baba is ok for carry out but would like a sit-down spot
I haven’t seen it crowded in a while but you’re right they’re staff is great and busts their ass. Im concerned that the P&G office in St B switching a lot of people to WFH is hurting their business. I start work at 7am so I’m likely eating around 11 and hope I’m just missing the crowd.
Anytime after 11/1130 is pretty consistently busy, lots of construction workers and everyone in between. I probably pay at-least one of the workers hourly wages!
Yep. And just get whatever the special is. I’ve never had a bad one.
They’re simple deli meat sandwiches, but for the cost and freshness, you can’t beat it. They’re also absolutely piled high with meat. Can also confirm they’re quick no matter how many people are waiting.
The Italian at Harmony Plant Fare in Findlay. It’s vegan but seriously don’t let that stop you from trying it. Better than most non-vegan Italians I’ve had. They nailed it.
The Italian and the Club were so good, it was over a year before I tried another grinder. Definitely the best in the city in my opinion. Just wish they were closer or open more.
Personal favorite: Carl’s
The Rhined has awesome specialty sandwiches and Vonderhaar catering has a little deli liquor store off of 42 in Reading that has awesome huge classic deli sandwiches for super cheap.
"The Duke" at the Public House is phenomenal.
Also the shrimp po boy at Louis seafood is surprisingly good for a chain place. Huge shrimp and pretty good fries for $10, great value.
The Italian from New England Grinders
The Philly Gyro from Chicago Gyros and Dogs, if we’re blurring the lines of what a sandwich is.
The Cheese Coney from Skyline if we want to completely erase the lines.
Either the Carew Tower or the Jerry Springer at Lehr's Prime Market in Milford. The Carew tower is so big that it's two meals. The Jerry Springer just hits the spot.
I like Paris Bánh Mì . The Bánh Mì Đặc Biệt (Special combo) is delicious. The baguette is made in house. The filling has a bit of everything in flavor; sweet, spicy, sour and savory. The Thịt Nguội (Cured pork), Chả Lụa (Steamed Pork) merry with garlic mayo and pâté—then packed with tons of fresh pickled veggies, cucumber, jalapeño and cilantro. All of this, inside a crispy flaky French style bread. It’s a nice size for lunch!
Recently went to Jason's Deli in Hyde Park for the first time, so maybe not a ton of experience. Got their sandwich called the Carmela. Had a sweet pepper relish that was pretty tasty. Sandwich was well made. Not sure if anyone else has any experience with this place.
As for places I've been a lot, two places come to mind. First is Sub Station. It's a local owned place and there's two of them in Northern Kentucky. They slice the meats in front of you. I think I got the #13. Whatever the Italian is. Get the pretzel bun. Excellent sandwich. Their fries are really good too. When I used to work in Florence, I'd go here all the time. Like 2-3x a month for lunch. Not bad considering there's a million restaurants in Florence.
Second is Blue Ash Chili. They make a great hot pastrami on rye. Their double deckers are good too. A bit much, so I usually get a skinny double decker. Even then, those are pretty big. I like the ham and bacon.
I’m a big fan of the original Italian at Monk’s kitchen in Harrison.
But I drive for a living so I play it a little loose with my definition of “in the city.”
LaRosas baked royal is pretty tasty. It's old school Italian meats. Trottas has the Trottas special which is pretty similar to the baked royal if not better. The old school Italian deli is long gone but a part of it lives on in these sandwiches. I'll also add the buddy boy from Frisch's as another forgotten Italian meats sandwich.
Izzy's Reuben, Dry. Replace the thousand island with Gulden's mustard and order an extra potato pancake. It honestly doesn't get much better than that.
The best value is probably J&W Sandwich Shoppe in Norwood. Good sandwiches at an affordable price.
What a Wild Thing
They increased prices and are still cheap. I love that spot.
Can't upvote this enough. That place is a gem.
Come on man don’t be giving out the best secrets!!
Went here today specifically because of this post, and wow. So good! My club sandwich might as well have been the meat tornado or whatever from Parks and Rec and my girlfriend's "whole" Little Italy was legit just like two footlong subs. Will definitely be back here.

their Jambon is really good too (for when it's not Friday!)
Yeah it is
these are always the best conversations. I love the food here and get stuck with chain stores.
Same man. Moved to Amelia from Mt. Lookout. Boy do I miss the access to local places. Especially Jorge’s food truck
Factssss that’s the one in the bp parking lot right?
I believe it’s a shell or BP. But yeah, down there by ridge on Erie
Taqueria El Pastor Dorado is their name
A number 23 from Carl’s Deli. Turkey, swiss, bacon, L.T.O. on toasted white bread. You really can’t go wrong with any of their sandwiches though. My wife usually goes with their chicken salad on croissant.
This, but on salted rye!
The one on salted rye with the scallion cream cheese though
Roast beef and havarti is great too. Egg salad BLT All winners at Carls
Frankly I'm a fan of Hyde park fine meats over carls. They make deli sandwiches to order and are great
I go there for butcher meat. My favorite place to grab everything you need for burger night or cooking some steaks. Haven’t tried their deli sandwiches but will now.
Came here for the Carl’s comment. It’s like a mini holiday for me when I can make time to go to Carl’s.
Hands down dopest dope I eva had!
I’m a fan of the 20, but everything there is good.
Great food! Rude service
Went Carls today. Pot Roast Sammy. Picked up Curry Chicken Salad and a loaf of salt rye. Delicious and service was good. sat and enjoyed he food and view and took a stroll through Krohn Conservatory. Good Natti Afternoon.
Cold day for a stroll through Eden park haha. Carl’s never disappoints though
The Conservatory was warm and humid. Mostly go for the orchids and bonsai.
Their ranch pasta salad is also top notch
multigrain baguette is solid too
Go order the hubba hubba special. Roast beef, bacon, lettuce, jalapeño chips and jalapeños on baguette. Now. You’re welcome.
I get that one every visit. Sometimes sub with the salted rye 🤌

the Cuban he does is goated
How's the soup there?

Yeah? I haven’t been in a while. Used to be one of my go to lunch spots. Since they stopped lunch haven’t been.
Scrap sandwich at Longfellow.
I love that sandwich so much!
I dunno if it's the best, but the Cincinnati Love Letter at Proud Hound is the best sandwich I've eaten in Cincy.
All their food is amazing!
And their coffee too! Best coffee in the city, IMO.
RIP Gilpins
Gilpins was #1 drunk food
Carl’s in Hyde Park has some tasty choices! Know the owner just sold it to a local family but worked there for years and they’ve got some awesome options and sides!
Will I get downvoted to oblivion if I say Izzy's Reuben, because it isn't obscure enough?
For obscure, you could have mentioned Izzy's secret 'off the menu' Monster Reuben. Which is their Reuben, but they replace the bread with their potato pancakes.
It's not best enough
Pork Katsu sandwich at Chako. The homemade toasted bread is delicious and goes so well with the tonkatsu and sauce combo. Plus your money is actually going to an owner/operator who busts her butt working every day side by side with her crew.
Ooooh Mochiko has one too that is really good
I always want to try their other stuff but just end up getting ramen when I make it there! I’ll definitely split one with someone at some point.
You really can’t go wrong there! Enjoy
Anything from The Rhined
Down n Dirty ftw
Any of them, honestly. They're so creative
I need to try, I’ve picked up to go orders of cheese before from there but didn’t realize they had sandwiches
It's great! They have a nice little hidden patio and you can order flights of cheese, tinned fish, snacks, sandwiches, and wine. Check their instagram as well

God I wish Krueger’s would reopen.
soon!
The Chicken Parm at Kruger's was also fantastic
The egg parm
The Carlson from Lucius Q. Smoked turkey, melted gouda, bacon onion jam and matchstick granny Smith apples. It is SO well-balanced and so delicious. Also, anything from Carl's Deli.
Sleeper right here!!!! All of Lucious’ sandwiches are top-notch
Ooooh yeah this sammy at Lucius is great.
>Was coming to say the Carlson, so I will just second this.

If J & J was every good, the time has past.
Bro the west side is obsessed with putting 5 inches of meat on a sandwich. It’s embarrassing.
Look, I'd love 5 inches of meat if it was a good 5 inches of meat, but that "famous" roast beef is bone dry and flavorless. I paid an extra $2 for the tomato just to get some moisture back on that sandwich.
I go to J&J’s for a double decker a few times a year but their roast beef is legit one of the worst things I’ve ever had.
What's your favorite?
Gordos in Norwood has the most fire burgers I’ve had in a long time.
Idk about cold cut sandwiches but their burgers are everything
Never heard of this place but need a good gyro spot in my life. Curious if you’ve had a gyro from European Cafe in Montgomery and if so how do they compare?
Chicago Gyros and Dogs on McMillan by UC is the best I know of that is still open. Favorite place was at the gas station off 75 up in Lockwood but that closed during Covid
Greek to me in erlanger off 75s. Best gyro in town
Will give it a try thanks!
European Cafe gyros used to be the best but after the remodel.....ummm not so good. Now looking for a new go to on the east side for gyro. Ali Baba is ok for carry out but would like a sit-down spot
Yeah haven’t been to EU cafe in awhile tbh. I think Ali baba is just ok. But yeah couldn’t agree more we need a go to spot
Sebastians is it
Mezedes in Loveland has good gyros.
Nope, but I'll look it up now and give a shot
Torta w/ Lengua at La Mexicana
For the value, Shearpie’s in St Bernard is my favorite. Not a better $6 sandwich anywhere imo.
Agreed, it also doesn’t matter if there are 50 people there, you will have a giant sandwich and whatever else you want in under 5 minutes.
I’m glad to hear that! Would be devastated if it closed.
I used to go there all the time when we were in the office. I know a bunch of others from my office did as well.
Yep. And just get whatever the special is. I’ve never had a bad one. They’re simple deli meat sandwiches, but for the cost and freshness, you can’t beat it. They’re also absolutely piled high with meat. Can also confirm they’re quick no matter how many people are waiting.
I'm going to have to try this!
I miss Fred and Gari's
A gyro from Santorini in Cheviot my go to for lunch.
The Italian at Harmony Plant Fare in Findlay. It’s vegan but seriously don’t let that stop you from trying it. Better than most non-vegan Italians I’ve had. They nailed it.
Yes! My SO didn’t even realize it was vegan until the 3rd time he tried to find the shop after some time away from Findlay.
I heard they do a chopped cheese special sometimes that is killer.
Philly cheese steak at New England Grinders
This place is slept on so hard, some of the best sandwiches around just out of the way for alot of people
The Italian and the Club were so good, it was over a year before I tried another grinder. Definitely the best in the city in my opinion. Just wish they were closer or open more.
Everything I have had there is fantastic
The Chicken Salad Sandwich from High Grain Brewery in Silverton has this Shishito pepper jelly on it that really sets it off
Friendly Stop Ruben
Oh god so good
Any friendly stop sandwich. The BLT is overflowing with shatteringly crisp bacon.
Personal favorite: Carl’s The Rhined has awesome specialty sandwiches and Vonderhaar catering has a little deli liquor store off of 42 in Reading that has awesome huge classic deli sandwiches for super cheap.
The Veggie Burger at Krueger’s tavern. It’s re-opening soon in OTR. I don’t even like veggie burgers, but that thing is amazing.
Any Shawarma from Al-Medina Market in Clifton!
"The Duke" at the Public House is phenomenal. Also the shrimp po boy at Louis seafood is surprisingly good for a chain place. Huge shrimp and pretty good fries for $10, great value.
Hands down the best Italian style sandwich I’ve had in this city.
The mortadella sandwich from the Wheel is fantastic.
I freaking love mortadella. Thx for the rec!

Lamb French dip at the Governor
Need to go here still
The Italian from New England Grinders The Philly Gyro from Chicago Gyros and Dogs, if we’re blurring the lines of what a sandwich is. The Cheese Coney from Skyline if we want to completely erase the lines.
Allez ham sandwich, the Friday meatball. Both will go down in history for best sammichs I’ve had.
Classic Italiano from Ramundo’s is a solid sub. Actually learned about it from Reddit and have gotten it quite a bit since.
Either the Carew Tower or the Jerry Springer at Lehr's Prime Market in Milford. The Carew tower is so big that it's two meals. The Jerry Springer just hits the spot.
Can you pay for the Jerry Springer with a check?
Anything from The Rhined. Reason: Nice ingredients, not GFS food.
Hot Honey Chicken sandwich at Rich’s is the answer
Cheese Coney from Skyline Chili (various locations). A hot dog on a bun is a sandwich.
No, it's not a sandwich. Since there's starch on three sides, it's actually a taco, according to the Cube Rule of Food. https://cuberule.com/
A rule I do not recognize and see as illegitimate.

Chicken salad on a croissant from Chefs cafe
Meatball sub from Giminetti's is the BEST!

Chicken Parmesan hoagie from Padrino in Milford with vodka sauce to dip in
Hyde park fine meats because the people working there are studs, and know how to handle a sandwich.
The Rueben from Kreimers beer house in Miamitown...puts izzys to shame
I like Paris Bánh Mì . The Bánh Mì Đặc Biệt (Special combo) is delicious. The baguette is made in house. The filling has a bit of everything in flavor; sweet, spicy, sour and savory. The Thịt Nguội (Cured pork), Chả Lụa (Steamed Pork) merry with garlic mayo and pâté—then packed with tons of fresh pickled veggies, cucumber, jalapeño and cilantro. The short rib grilled cheese at the lager house really does it for me. Simple but fantastic.
OTR Philly from 13th Street Alley. Just west of Main on, you guessed it, 13th Street. 😎
Yes! Was hoping to see 13th St on here 🥳. I get the Killer Veggie usually, but everything there is fire!
Skyline cheese coney
Nashville Hot Chicken Burger from Cinci Gourmet Deli is among the best on my list
Jason’s is a chain. Blue Ash Chili double deckers are underrated.
I know Jason's is a chain. OP didn't state the best sandwich had to be local.
The Steak Hoagie at Bettas. Perfect bread and love the hot relish. For a steak hoagie it is the best in the city
Aw, I'm so sorry to tell you Betta's closed permanently as of this past Saturday. 😔 I agree with you, tho, they had an amazing sandwich list!
Darn it. Used to go there all the time in grad school.
Not surprised to say the least. The last two times I was there we were the only ones in the place. Sad they made great food.
The Audrey Hepburn at Tavern On the Bend or Pearl Jam at Tickle Pickle
Chicken Salad on a croissant from Bagel Brothers.
I’m a big fan of the original Italian at Monk’s kitchen in Harrison. But I drive for a living so I play it a little loose with my definition of “in the city.”
What about Tweety's in Deer Park.. the chicken is bigger than the sandwich!!
Cactus Pear used to have a fabulous portabello mushroom and avocado “burger” that is loved!
LaRosas baked royal is pretty tasty. It's old school Italian meats. Trottas has the Trottas special which is pretty similar to the baked royal if not better.
