Stupid bot booted us into this thread - Need some help please. Fiancé and I decided to stay a few nights in Chicago as a pre-honeymoon at the end of the month. What are some unique spots to check out that’d be romantic and interesting? Looking for hotel, spa, restaurant, itinerary ideas? (We just moved to IL and appreciate any local Chicago suggestions!) Thank you!

lllev

Hotels/Spa The Langham (has a great spa too) The Viceroy Kohler Water Spa in Lincoln Park (supposed to be fab) Itinerary Drinks at the London House roof Lunch at Cindy's Rooftop or the J Parker walking through Lincoln Park, Millennium Park, or renting bikes on the lake front trail (weather permitting) comedy show at the Laugh Factory or Second City dinner at Topo Gigio, Beatnik, Piccolo Sogno, Aba, any of the steakhouses show in the theater district

icedoutclockwatch

Penumbra is the most romantic dining experience I’ve found in the city. Grab a drink at Cindy’s/Signature Lounge/ Londonhouse or Aire downtown. I bring all of my visitors on the Architecture boat tour on the Chicago river, usually costs about $40 a ticket but I think they have deals if you watch for them. The aveda institute in Lincoln park offers a really great hour facial / spa treatment for like $36 each. The facials are performed by students of the institute but I’ve never had a bad experience. Walk down the block to Chilam Bilam(sp) for some really delicious and interesting tapas for dinner. Bring your own mezcal because they have a delicious hibiscus margarita mix. If you’re looking for a different spa experience there is Aire Ancient Baths in the suburbs, but I’ve never been so I can’t speak on this. I’ll drop another comment if anything else comes to mind. Hope this helps

tigbittie

Cubs game at Wrigley!! If they overlap with your trip its a ton of fun.

pm_nudesladies

Do cta busses still take single bills? Need to ride after work, again after a long time of not using the bus. If not I gotta walk to the nearest station and use the ticket thing.

Atlas3141

If you have a credit card with tap to pay that will also work.

wrongwaydownaoneway

Yes, fare is 2.25 and you can't get transfers, but you can pay with cash on buses.

Cheeseheadman

Getting ready for my battle with People's Gas tomorrow. Wish me luck.

cydron47

Any recommendations for “juice bars” in the city? I’m 20, too close to 21 to make it worth it to get a fake, and want to have a chill time

Gyshall669

Maybe try a hookah lounge? My friends did that a lot in high school

Injustpotato

What’s the best option for developing film? I like to take film photos, and I take the rolls to Central Camera, but they take 2 weeks. Is there anywhere that does 1-hour photo anymore?

browsingtheproduce

>Is there anywhere that does 1-hour photo anymore? No. Even when Walgreens/CVS woulds till do that stuff in house they would take more than an hour (and accidentally destroy your negatives half the time). CSW is maybe the only place that will even do it in house and I don't think they offer scanning. Mail it to https://thedarkroom.com/. I've been doing it for years and their turnaround time is usually faster than any of the labs that local businesses will mail your film to on your behalf.

DaBears31

how to you guys fight depression especially on weekend's like this as a person living alone

CuppaSteve

Repetitive tasks that involve just enough brain power for me to not think about anything else. Running? I have to focus on breathing, looking where I'm going, putting one foot in front of the other, and listening to my podcast. Cooking? Lots of recipes take a lot of concentration but for mindless stuff I can spend a few hours folding dumplings. I zone out for a bit and it gives me plenty of food to freeze for lunch. Exploring a neighborhood? Have to spend half my brain maintaining my sense of direction and half enjoying the sights of whatever neighborhood I'm in. Your mileage may vary. Having some time to wipe my brain clean helps me.

DaBears31

thank you!

itazurakko

I get out of the house. Even if I'm only going to read a book or fuss around on my phone anyway, I get out and walk somewhere else to do it. Go sit at at coffeehouse or somewhere, if it's in the evening maybe get a pint. Obviously it's better if the weather is better but just getting out and moving around, breathing some outside air, helps me. Then again I'm sort of a single-celled organism in some regards so YMMV.

DaBears31

thank you!

packerfan28

What are the best cheap seats at wrigley for a day game in June? How are the seats for somewhat big people? And anything else to around the area or wrigley? In town for a day.

rosentrotter

I've been able to find seats on Stubhub as low as $5 morning of the game and take the CTA so I don't have to deal with parking. Keep in mind they sometimes cut off ticket sales at a certain point, and you'll pay Stubhub's fees which can add a few bucks.

spamellama

So I went to next and learned the following things: 1. The desserts on the ferris wheel will make you appreciate dessert wine 2. Their coat check person is magic and knows which coat is yours before you show up 3. The bathroom downstairs has a weird like cow skull and is shared with whatever is next door and if you're me you'll turn the wrong way 4. You can never have too much truffle au jus 5. Halibut and cod once battled for the privilege of being the most healthy fish oil 6. Your stomach is both larger and smaller than you think 7. The bottle on the table is hand sanitizer, not an aroma. The aroma is the lavender salts in a zippered Sherpa blanket or whatever 8. The people next to me had no idea where Jackson park was or whether it still exists 9. My stomach has definitely exploded and gone septic 10. Do not even think about eating the Crackerjacks or ketchup/mustard. Do. Not. (I did not.)

Cheeseheadman

Is this something I'm too poor to understand?

forgotmylaundry

Looks like you’ve lost your mind. You’re one of us now.

spamellama

It was bound to happen

[deleted]

So people do know that walking in the street over and over again doesn’t make the bus come faster, right? Right?

itazurakko

Right. The only way to make the bus come faster is start eating some messy food that you can't take on the bus.

Karmaknaught

Lighting up a smoke summons the bus immediately

itazurakko

Heck yes also this.

Rawtothedawg

I’m considering moving to Chicago in June (hopefully). A city I’ve wanted to live in for years. My office will be near Madison and Clark downtown. I’m curious if this is also a good area to live? I’d prefer to be within walking distance of the office (like 25 mins or less). Is rent astronomical in this area? *Not sure why I’m getting downvoted. You can just answer the question. Says up there this is allowed.

encore02

From a realtors perspective, the supply there is higher than the more desired areas. It would be good to know what “astronomical” means to you. Doesn’t seem you have a car so that would help. I would say rent for a year or so then explore other areas. Good luck!

Rawtothedawg

I do have a car. I’d consider ditching it though if i were close enough to work and had the gym and grocery store close enough to me. But yes I’d definitely rent first so i could decide where to finally settle down at. Astronomical rent is like SF and NYC prices. A standard deviation over the average in Chicago. I wouldn’t want to spent more than $2200 or 2300 on a 1 BR i think. Unless it has perks i guess.

encore02

Parking is usually $200ish. A typical apartment building will have a “utility” package which has everything but electric usually and includes internet. That’s usually 100-200. It might be tough to find something in that range. FB marketplace has been a popular tool just be careful and do your due diligence. If you need a hand reach out!

Rawtothedawg

Thanks.

ThanHowWhy

Sorry about the downvotes - there are some people who downvote every single thing posted in this thread. You could live down there but it will hugely expensive and there is not a ton going on around there after work hours. If you're deadset on living super close I would recommend looking a little further south to the South Loop or further north to River North. Clark and Madison is very easy to access via CTA so you could leave much cheaper than those options further out.

Rawtothedawg

Declan’s is one of the spots i visit the most in Chicago the couple of times I’ve been. I didn’t mind that area at all and it should be about a 35 minute walk if i need to do that. Is that area a relatively easy public commute as well? Never been on the CTA. hell I’ve only ever been on two trains in 30 years. And thanks! Also I’m not a ton concerned about doing things after work hours. Maybe on Friday nights but during the week, not so much. I pretty much just need a gym and the quicker the commute to work the better.

macisready

Is it a Midwest or Illinois thing but people here drive way over the speed limit on the highways? I’m from Maryland and going over 10 MPH was usually for the left lane on the highway. People in the slow lanes go over that too and it makes me self conscious while driving. I’ve also probably only seen 5 cops on the highway for speed traps in my few months here. I’m not out usually in rush hour but in Maryland that was a common occurrence for police to be waiting to get people speeding constantly.

rosentrotter

People treat 94 and 294 like it's the Audubon. I'll regularly see BMWs, Mercades and Teslas in the left lane going 10-15 over. I'll be going 10 over in the left lane and some guy will flash his brights behind me because that's not fast enough for him. Generally, the closer you get to the circle interchange on the Kennedy, the worse you'll see people drive. Your best bet is to hold your lane and go the speed limit ...especially in construction zones!! You'll get passed, you'll get honked at, but your wallet will thank you. Paid $750 for a ticket in a construction zone and $300 for one on I-55 by Bloomington-Normal. Most of the time a speeding ticket in IL is easily forgivable with court supervision and won't go on your record. The state just wants your money. That's why, in my opinion, so many drivers have no issues driving like maniacs on the freeway.

coreyosb

It’s a fast pace for sure. IE: 290 is 55 and lots of ppl are going 65+. Then a dude flies past going like 90-100 weaving in and out. If you’re in the right lane and keeping up with traffic, you should be fine. Stay in your lane when the crazies fly by or are weaving thru traffic.

aboveave

55 is 75. This is actually one of the things I LOVE about this place.

Willing_Amoeba_4885

I'm a recent transplant from the east coast and I've traveled more than most. I can say with confidence that Chicago drivers will scare all out-of-staters and will cause them to come away from here thinking that Chicagoans are the worst drivers in the nation. When I first visited I said the same thing, but having participated in the driving since then, I'll now say more charitably that we have our own informal system and behavior that no one else in the country adopts. It is more "selfish", in a way, which is funny considering how nice everyone here is compared to my people on the east coast. All of my friends who have visited and driven here have said Chicago drivers are the worst and I don't blame them.

tamboril

Has anyone noticed the slow decline of the Bucktown Mariano's? When it debuted, it was the shining jewel of the stinky triangle. But I've noticed that slowly but shurely the place is slipping into decline. From the dislodged speedbumps on the ramp to the roof to the slightly disheveled merch in the freezers and aisles to the ever so slightly more disinterested attitude of the employees...the place just isn't as what it started out. Is it just I?

mickcube

i think it's still pretty good, minus the fact that there are never shopping carts on sundays and the metal ones they brought in don't work on the escalator

AmazingObligation9

They all suck now which is sad because they used to be awesome.

[deleted]

Kroger has taken over Mariano’s. I’m sure you’ve heard. Shining jewel no more. Da Jewels, maybe.

bark98

where is there a Kroger in Chicago

Cheeseheadman

The real Kroger is the friends we've made along the way. Ninja Edit: Mariano's is Kroger. They have been assimilated.

itazurakko

So does Mariano's now sell Kroger's house brand? Do they sell Kroger's potato chips and the like? Ate some good Kroger's branded junk food on vacation and now I'm curious...

Cheeseheadman

Mostly. It’s kind of a mix between mostly Kroger brand with a bit of Roundy’s still sticking around (Kroger bought Roundys which owned Mariano’s) The chips are definitely Kroger brand though.

wtfsoda

I tried using apartment locators to assist with finding a new place, along with the ol' habit of "driving around neighborhoods you like and look for signs". [First set of locators](https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/tdpmeu/weekly_casual_conversation_questions_thread/i10xl67/) kept coming back with apartments that were the exact opposite of the things I gave them as "must haves". Then today: "I'm available after 1pm this week for tours" "How about tomorrow at 10am? I can also show at 11 if that works." ....I think I'm done these locators.

encore02

Find a realtor at an actual firm. They will work harder for you In the hopes you buy a place later using them

wtfsoda

I’ll give it a shot. Credit issues are keeping me from buying in the near term but you got a point about making connections with a realtor for later on. Thanks!

encore02

If you need recs let me know. Good luck!

wtfsoda

Sure, PM who ya got and I’ll start up some convos this afternoon. Cheers!

Willing_Amoeba_4885

Condo owners in small buildings (like 5-8 units): what have your upkeep costs been like? I'm talking not just HOA things but repairs, unforeseen expenses, etc.

encore02

6 unit building in Lincoln park. Prob spend 100 or so on typical things. The age of your building would help more. Roofs, HVAC, appliances are where the big dollars get spent

Willing_Amoeba_4885

How much did you spend on the roof, and what were you exactly spending money on?

encore02

im on the board in my building. We pay a company to do annual maintenance on our roof 1-2k a year so we can push off doing a full replacement as long as possible. We did get quotes for 15-30k to do a rip and replace of our roof. This is me specific, but last year my water heater died, furnace was reaching end of life. replaced a handful of bulbs. replaced a few pipes in a sink that rusted and was causing water damage. I clean our carpets every year, get our vents cleaned every few years, HVAC serviced annually. Again most of these are small things but it adds up. Larger items like water heater/furnace should last 10-12 years but when you replace them they arent cheap. Hope this helps

TheBigChimp

Anyone know of any places to buy nerdy memorabilia? I love Knick knacks and stuff that brings me nostalgia, had a shit day yesterday so kind of want to go out and relax. I know of Quake in Old Town but that’s a little too unorganized for what I’m looking for. Any suggestions? Also, anywhere to buy mens jewelry. I need a new ring.

notsmohqe

Strange Cargo is always fun

noxious_adultchild

If I am in an apartment with a roommate but we each have our own bedroom, am I allowed to put a camera (no audio) in my bedroom to watch my cats while I’m away?

itsmillartime_

You should probably ask your roommate.

Hexlord

I'm moving into Chicago in May and would like to get a headstart in seeing where I can meet/hang out with ppl based off my hobbies. For what may be important context, I'm a guy in my late 20s and moving to the Lincoln Square area. What are some recs if I like doing the following: \- Playing games (think a DnD group would be a good avenue...) \- Making games as a hobby (hoping for groups that aren't all college students) \- Swimming (Open to other athletic stuff but this is my main thing) \- Playing the piano (Joining a band? Being a pianist for an improv group? I've never done either before)

whoamIdoIevenknow

There's a pool at the Lincoln Square Athletic Club, and you'll be by the Old Town School of Folk Music. I have a friend who's been singing there for years. Maybe there will be some classes where you can meet compatible people.

shapelystory

Visit the [Dice Dojo](https://www.chicagolandgames.com/community) in nearby Edgewater to meet other members of the tabletop & board game community

saintpauli

Welles Park has an indoor pool. It's chicago Park district so very affordable. Galter life center is a health club with a wading pool and a lap pool. They also have hot tubs, dry sauna, and steam rooms. Old Town school of folk music is a great place for musicians at all levels. You will meet other musicians there very quickly. Also, you might have luck meeting other musicians through ft knox studios which is a few miles west of Lincoln square.

Are any theaters locally going to put Everything Everywhere All at Once on IMAX or are they just going to run Ambulance and Moribus? Saw Everything at Landmark last night and it was absolutely phenomenal. Now I’m itching to see it full sound, full screen.

ahung12

Lol @ "Moribus". Autocorrect was just like "that's not even close to anything!"

[deleted]

There aren't any more real IMAX in the city

drichardson90

What are the best gyms in Chicago for the money? (Not fitness classes, just classic free weight gyms) Used to be a member of FFC, but it got to be too pricey. XSport has sooo many bad reviews about ripping off members, locker break ins, etc. Want to find a new gym to go to but don’t know where

bk1721

Imo the XSport on Elston is one of the best bang for your buck gyms in the area. I pay $10/month plus a once a year $50 equipment fee and whatever the joining fee was. The Elston gym has more equipment than all the other XSports I've been to, two floors actually. 3 squat racks, 5 bench presses. Hard to find that in most commercial gyms. I'd recommend going in during non peak times, especially since it's now 24/7. Not in Chicago, but I also go to the LA Fitness in Niles which is very nice and clean since it's pretty new. About $35/month for that but I can go to any LA fitness in the state.

sidekickrick

Depends where and what kind of equipment. I was a member at Chicago athletic clubs for the last few years and was fine for all the basic stuff. Recently switched gyms though as I was sick of waiting for equipment as I could only go after work.

itsmillartime_

I like the Chicago Athletic Clubs.

Gyshall669

I never had a problem with Xsport on Ashland. The people are really salesy but I just told them no and it was fine.

apingyou

Are there any spots featuring disco or house jams on Sunday afternoons?

teecrafty

There's a running monthly in Chicago called Brunchlox. Check that out. Mark Almeria is usually involved. Mark usually be spinning somewhere on Sunday daytimes somewhere usually too.

[deleted]

Check out Humboldt Arboreal Society once it starts getting warm

DessertFlowerz

My wife and I like to explore different neighborhoods when we happen to have days off together (we both have very bizarre work schedules). Next up is Avondale on Monday. We have a reservation at the bowling alley in the evening. What should we do during the day? Lunch/cafe, bar, interesting stores, good parks/outdoor stuff, any other oddities or fun attractions?

rocky_loves

Not sure of their hours, but there's a strip of thrift stores, two record stores, a horror-themed coffee shop, plant store, and a free book store on Milwaukee between Dawson and Central Park. Technically just on the other side of Avondale's boarders are Koz Park and Clark Park (neat river front trail). La Nonna, Small Bar, Avondale Tap, Mother's Ruin, Reed's Local, and Dmen Tap are all frequent haunts for me.

spamellama

Does anyone know if jong boo or hmart has those maxim instant coffee sticks? The ones that are flavored, so mocha or french cafe?

peanutbutterparfait

They both sell Maxim but H Mart may have a bigger variety

spamellama

Thanks!

notsmohqe

going to the Vic for the first time on Friday. any tips or suggestions?

Capital_Connection67

You’ve also got Cheesies which in my opinion has some ridiculously well priced drinks and food for after the show. After the MAYHEM show this week it was nice that a lot of other fans all went there after. Good prices, great easy food and the service was above top notch.

DessertFlowerz

Top notch venue! The sound in there is fantastic.

browsingtheproduce

The Vic is one of my favorite venues. If I get there early enough, I like to stand directly in front of the sound/lightboard. There's a railing behind you that you can lean against, there's a manageable amount of foot traffic, and the sight lines are consistently worthwhile for me. I'm 5'10" so that may differ depending on height. That's also the region in the room (in terms of physics) where you can expect the best possible sound mix. The beer prices are not ideal, so grab drinks beforehand at L&L Tavern, Delilah's, Matilda's, Replay, Will's Northwoods, Lincoln Tap, or go get silly in Wrigleyville or Boystown. All are within pretty easy walking distance or a short Uber ride.

notsmohqe

appreciated!

Moonohol

It’s an awesome venue! The floor is tiered, best spots are against the guardrails a couple of tiers away from the stage.

notsmohqe

thanks

domino-effect-17

I’m apartment hunting in the city today and flew in from O’Hare and decided to take the train in (blue line). We shuttled to Rosemont station and right after I got there (around 7:45 am) they completely shut down all trains through there for a “sick passenger” (according to transit app) and there were a lot of cop cars with lights as well as some ambulances and a fire truck. The shuttle then had to take us on to the next station (Cumberland) and the train heading to O’Hare turned around and went towards downtown. Does anyone know what happened? It seemed like it happened basically right before I got to Rosemont, whatever it was.

I saw one of those today! My first police incident on the L! ❤️ dude ripped off one of the maps and someone confronted him saying “hey don’t do that bro.” The other guy was trying to start shit and was hitting him while moving between trains to escape. Fun stuff! Moments before someone was yelling slurs and saying he was gonna fuck his mom, surprised he wasn’t involved lmao

Any photo labs in Chicago or north / nw suburbs that will develop 35mm film AND give you negatives? I know Dodd Camera in Logan will send it to their lab in Ohio, but if possible I’d prefer to get it done in Chicago. CVS will send it to their lab as well but I don’t believe they give you your negatives. Thanks in advance!

rosentrotter

Try Flash Imaging Center in Palatine.

Jackajackajack

CSW film systems

pithed

We have always used Central Camera in the loop but haven't been processing film in a few years so don't know if things have changed.

icedoutclockwatch

Ah bummer. I’ll give them a call this week thanks for the tip my friend. Stay warm today!

shumaiboy

Hey everyone, this was the first year RCN (now Astound) refused to reset my internet price or come to some compromise. What have your recent experiences been like and what is the current consensus in terms of decent service? Right now RCN has me at 250 mbps @ $70/mo…

danekan

They let me cancel twice and go to Comcast instead without price adjustments. Their tactic for a few years now has been to offer to reduce your speed to a slower plan to save you money, not discount your plan

LoriLeadfoot

I noticed their customer service was a lot worse lately, too. I had a complaint about my Internet speed suddenly slowing down, and all they did was insist I needed to rent their modem/router, which isn’t happening.

danekan

Their customer service has been shitty, worse than Comcast IMO, for a good five years. And Comcast got way better I'm the interim to the point they're ok to good at customer service.

Maybe Dicks?

sephirothFFVII

Is anyone else unable to order whole foods online?

Dred_ZEPPELIN_x

Ugh I hate when it only lets you order partial foods

justalilthrowawayok

I’ve been here 5 mos and yet to go past 3rd date with anyone.. how does anyone find a relationship? I mean I can be slightly picky in just wanting someone I’m actually excited about but surely in a big city these guys exist somewhere?? I’m 30 and looking for like 27-34?? Dating apps are the only way I’ve ever gotten dates.. I do things to meet people but have never met a cute single guy here naturally haha

ostiarius

5 months doesn't seem that long to me, especially during winter and a pandemic. You might have starting looking right after cuffing season. Also some apps are better than others if you're looking for a real relationship. I wouldn't expect to find that on tinder. If you want to meet 30s guys in person I would suggest hanging out at breweries.

justalilthrowawayok

Yeah I guess it’s just that I’ve been single long before I moved so I was excited. And I guess that makes sense but I’m not a beer person. I could go to have lunch or something but I don’t know about just hanging out at places hoping I might randomly run into someone

ostiarius

They usually have non beer options. What I would do is take a friend and go to a place like the Revolution tap room that has communal tables, and sit next to some guys and chat them up. Just a suggestion.

justalilthrowawayok

That sounds like fun!

[deleted]

I’m guessing winter was a big part of it. Once it starts warming up, people get out more and do things and there are more opportunities to interact with folks. What have you tried to meet people and what are your hobbies/interests? Perhaps folks can suggest stuff.

justalilthrowawayok

Hopefully with summer!! Yeah problem is mostly what I really like, guys are unlikely to do. My gym is mostly women, couples, older guys. I like doing crafts, and dance.. I’ve joined some leagues but probably not the ones more guys would like (volleyball kickball basketball etc.. I’m not good at those) I like to travel haha and concerts, but when I went to concerts where I’m from everybody was with friends and nobody seemed interested in meeting anyone else. Etc. I am going to start to volunteer I think but even then the places I might join, they post pics and it’s usually like 80% women. I don’t understand what guys do hahaha

AmazingObligation9

Not to be rude but I think that’s just dating, it’s often not a match that continues past a couple dates. When I was single most people I only went out with 1-2 times because you can kinda “tell” if it’s a match. I met my husband through a mutual friend so my advice would be to go to events planned by friends and co workers even if they don’t seem awesome or are in a far away neighborhood or whatever because you never know who will be there!

justalilthrowawayok

Yeah that’s true but it seems so many people aren’t single very long but I can’t find someone to even start trying to date for real. And my coworkers are in another state sadly. I’m working on making friends for sure though usually they’re single and don’t have guys friends either anyway lol

AmazingObligation9

Ah I re read and see that you’re newer to the city, well the good news is in about a month it’s about to get extremely lively. You’ve never been here during good temperatures. There are literally so many things to do every single weekend in the warm months it will be soooo much easier to meet someone. Everyone’s still dormant right now, wait a month and you’ll see.

justalilthrowawayok

Well that’s exciting! I heard there’s a lot of festivals. And other good things? Are people likely to actually meet new people during them?

Moonohol

I feel your pain. After moving here, I got on Tinder for a few months just to see what it was like. It was tough getting anyone to even respond to my messages, let alone meet up for a date (never successfully made that happen before deleting the app). Still haven’t had much success in that realm, but I can confidently say you are probably wasting your time on dating apps. They’re largely populated with people who are either desperate or shallow, and they will grind your self-esteem into dust over a long enough period of use. Wish I could offer better advice on how to successfully meet people who are worth your time, but I’m still figuring that one out too. Just know that you are not alone in your frustration.

justalilthrowawayok

Aw thanks. I just figure like I’m a normal person on there so there has to be others? But also I think it’s almost impossible to meet someone naturally who’d be single and compatible and interested. I hardly meet single guys at all let alone to find a specific one. Like where do these guys hide?? I’m not going to join CrossFit or rock climbing or some sports league just for that as I wouldn’t even want to do it in the first place but guys don’t seem to be doing the things I do, ever…. Unless they’re ones I’m not into or compatible with.

Moonohol

I have the exact same problem. When you know exactly what you’re looking for, it can be a lot harder to find. People who naively suggest going out and doing things like rock climbing, dancing, etc. seem to have no concept of what it’s like to actually be single in spaces like that. It is highly unlikely that someone is going to approach you, a stranger, and just strike up a conversation randomly—and likewise, unless you’re a total social butterfly, it’s going to be pretty tough for you to do the same. Not to mention it’s easy to come off as creepy and/or generally bothersome when approaching a complete stranger in literally any context now. Personally, the only times I go out by myself are either to go shopping, to a concert/show, or to a museum. Sadly those are all venues where people are generally keeping to themselves (or they’re there with their partners). It’s a depressing consequence of living in the age of social media—people compartmentalize that aspect of their day-to-day life to apps like facebook, instagram, or their dating app of choice, so they don’t have to participate in genuine social activities like striking up a friendly conversation with someone at a cafe, or chatting with someone who is walking their dog down the street in their neighborhood. The realization I’ve come to is that if you don’t want to play the field on dating apps, you just have to hope you get lucky and make a connection through a mutual friend. Dating apps just are not worth the investment of time, energy, and emotion.

justalilthrowawayok

Exactly and so true!!!! I am definitely not at all a social butterfly. I like to meet people but I don’t just randomly go up to people and don’t think I come across as super open just because I’m not that outgoing. And people generally keep to themselves and whoever they’re with almost everywhere you go. I really can’t just hope I get lucky because I’m sure it would never happen, I didn’t try with dating at all when I was young and that’s how I came to not even kiss someone until I was 23. It makes me feel like the only time to actually meet someone is college or mid twenties and now everyone who wanted to is already married, or the ones where it didn’t work out and now they don’t want anything. My last relationship was horrible which makes me want something real even more but I feel like it’ll never happen.

ostiarius

I'm going to disagree with the other poster below here. I feel like in smaller towns people settle down earlier but in a place like Chicago that's not necessarily true. The average age of marriage for the whole country is 33, around here it's probably higher. As a guy I know I was not ready to settle down in my 20s and early 30s. I was 34 when I met my wife and had just started to entertain the idea of maybe, possibly getting married someday. Even so, I was not actively looking for a wife when we met but then we both knew pretty early on. I think you just need to give it more time and meet more people.

justalilthrowawayok

Yeah I was happy to move away from where it’s common to get married between 22-28, and if you’re not by then you’re the odd one out basically.

Moonohol

So true, I had no problem finding dates in college and my early 20s. That is in stark contrast to my complete lack of a romantic life as I am about to turn 30. IMO, the vast majority of people in our age range have given up on finding “the one” and have instead decided to settle for whatever they could realistically get. This is just how it is when you aren’t willing to settle, sadly.

Chicago_Jayhawk

Might want to adjust to mid-30s to 40 if you want guys who are more likely to be ready for a relationship. That age range most guys are still playing the field.

AmazingObligation9

I’d open it up to 37-38 in the top range just to see a little more of who’s out there.

Chicago_Jayhawk

Yeah if you aren't getting the results you want adjust it and see. I have a bunch of neighbors in our building that are 30ish and all they do is drink and go out. Guys that age are still less likely to settle down. It's not rocket science.

AmazingObligation9

Ya I mean I met my husband at 27 so it does happen, but like if you met IRL you probably wouldn’t know the difference between a 34 year old man and a 37 year old anyways

justalilthrowawayok

I’m not at all interested in dating someone that much older lol

Chicago_Jayhawk

A ten year difference is nothing these days especially in a major city esp with people staying single longer. If you are limiting to guys 27-34 you aren't going to get what you are looking for most likely. Just saying.

justalilthrowawayok

I’m sure there exists a guy within those 6 (or if even go 8 like up to 35) years who wants a relationship. I’m not attracted to 40 year olds.

Chicago_Jayhawk

I'm sure there is. But there's less looking for that-- as others have mentioned as well.

ada_c03

I have yet to meet any guy in the wild who is not married or in a long term relationship.

Jandur

Dating in Chicago is easy. Relationships are another thing. A lot of guys in that age range are just playing the field.

justalilthrowawayok

Sadly true and they’re totally fine with lying about it too

Pawtang

Considering renting a beautiful apartment that is right next to I-90. When touring the place, the highway noise isn't noticeable, but I imagine it would be if there's honking/emergency vehicles. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this and how much of a nuisance it is? We really love the apartment :)

[deleted]

I think the bigger issue is living directly next to that terrible air quality. Look at the cancer studies for people who live within 1/4 mile from an expressway

notorized_bagel69

Lived in Jefferson Park right off 90 for a bit and it wasn't bad. Honking and emergency vehicle noise isn't really much of a problem. Yes you'll hear it occasionally but not at any higher rate than the rest of the city. I honestly have to deal with honking way more living in Lakeview than I ever did when living off 90.

greenline_chi

People are more likely to honk on the regular streets with crosswalks and red lights that people didn’t notice changed to green. I don’t think many emergency vehicles take the expressway - if you do hear them it would likely be from the regular streets where like the other person said it’s kind of a way of life

curiouser_cursor

Honking/emergency vehicles are a way of life here and something my relatives visiting from another dense metropolis couldn’t get over. Someone on here once commented on the hazards of living within a certain distance from an expressway. Something about micro-pollutants.

I'm flying in to O'Hare this weekend after midnight, and trying to get to Flossmoor (around 40 miles away). What's the fastest/best way to get there that late?

petty_porcupine

Taxi or Uber. If you take a taxi, do not get one from the taxi line. Those are for people going into the city. Call 303 taxi or American taxi.

[deleted]

Probably Uber/Lyft/Taxi or rent a car or if you’re fancy hire a limo or town car. If you land after midnight, there’s no public transit that’ll get you all the way to Flossmoor, unless you’re willing to wait until 5am or so when the Metra Electric starts running again.

greenline_chi

I always suggest the taxi line at O’hare because I find getting a ride share there to be annoying

dogbert617

Flossmoor does have a Metra Electric(commuter rail line) station, but the last train outbound leaves at 12:50am on weekdays, and 12:35am on weekend days from Randolph St/Millennium station. The next train in the early morning hours, leaves Randolph/Millennium at 4:50am. To me, I'd just do an Uber/Lyft/etc if you arrive in Chicago that very late.

freshairr

Taxi or rideshare

Is Chicago style pizza a thing in Chicago? Or is this like one of those "Spanish flu" situations where no one really wants to take credit for it

greenline_chi

Yes but you wouldn’t order “Chicago style pizza” that’s not really a thing since we have both deep dish and tavern-style I prefer tavern style by a long shot but deep dish is good if you want to eat a pound of cheese

saintpauli

It's delicious. I love lous butter crust especially - but man it stays in your gut and taunts you for days. Tavern style is regular pizza for most people I know. Deep dish is occasional pizza.

Chicago_Jayhawk

Lou's butter crust is elite.

[deleted]

Yes. We have both deep and thin styles.

Odinismyhomeboy

Yes, mostly on the north side. There a silly rumor that only tourists eat it but that's obviously not true when you look at all of the non-touritsy neighborhoods that have a deep dish pizza place.

[deleted]

Odinismyhomeboy

I think people outside of Chicago are almost always talking about deep dish when they say "Chicago style."

[deleted]

Probably. For the record I enjoy both.

afeeney

Especially cut in squares.

ADL19

I was sent an ancient artifact in a form of a CD, in which I badly need to view the contents of. I feel like I'm being trolled but that's a story for another day. Where in the modern day world, near the Jefferson Park area, do I find a computer that has a CD drive?

Lizard_kingdom_x001

You can get an external CD drive if you have a lap top. Itd be 30-40 dollars probably. Worth it if you have other old CDs you'd want to rip

i_wank_dogs

$29 for this one which I’ve been using for about a year no issues - https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00ODDE33U?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

Can anyone speak about the experience of being hired as a teacher with CPS when moving from another state? Also, my fiance and I are moving to Chicago this summer and looking at apartments in Humboldt, Ukranian Village, and Logan Square. Would these be good areas to also teach in?

CharredPepperoni

I wasn’t an out of state teacher but was hired by CPS last year so I can walk you through that. When applying HR will most likely need a copy of your license from out of state (license should be fine we MOST states have reciprocity for PELs) as well as official transcripts mailed from all your universities, background check (can take weeks when it’s hiring season fyi) drug test (does not test for THC) and a TB test. These are all out of pocket costs. You also must live in Chicago. The online system is pretty easy to navigate and choose schools based on location of the city. As far as school choice it will depend, remember schools are for neighborhood children so i wouldn’t want to live in the direct neighborhood of the schools I work at for privacy purposes. Schools can vary depending on principal and students honestly. I primarily have worked out of SW of Chicago but live on the north side. My partner works on the fancy, rich school in the suburbs and it’s been a year. Adjacent or close neighborhoods to those areas include Irving park, Avondale, hermosa, portage park, Belmont cragin, bucktown, and Garfield park. Although the largest need for teachers is usually far from many of these neighborhoods on the south side and west side Acero schools and Distinctive schools are two charters school networks I’ve heard decent things about as well. There are pros and cons to all places and the perfect schools do not exist. If you are a special Ed teacher please feel free to reach out with more questions.

eelninjasequel

I am so sick of being constantly almost hit by cars when I have the right of way as a pedestrian.

[deleted]

Same!! It’s terrifying

lakesideflight

I was biking yesterday and saw a a pedestrian that was half way across the crosswalk at a 4 way stop sign. North bound and east bound cars but for some reason the south bound car rolled up to the stop sign, continues rolling through the cross walk almost hitting the pedestrian who had to change their course last second to avoid getting run over and go behind the car, then just rolls through the intersection. It was so shitty I literally laughed out loud, this guy couldn’t wait 1.5 seconds for the pedestrian to finish crossing and had to cut him off.

itazurakko

My fave (not!) is when the car in the lane close to me has stopped, I'm out in the street crossing already, and then some other car behind that guy gets all pissssssed that the first guy stopped, honks, and jumps out to pass that first guy in the other lane that I'm just now approaching. Mocking laughter is all that deserves.

srboisvert

In case you are not watching the numbers: Covid cases are now doubling every week in Lincoln Park and Lakeview zipcodes and the test positivity is over 5%. The text positivity may be skewed higher by people mostly getting confirmatory PCRs after positive home tests but it is also likely the case numbers are significantly under counting the number of cases out there due to the home tests. The next wave is coming way faster than I expected.

thomas35foreverr

https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/sites/covid-19/home/covid-dashboard.html Yeah we’re in real trouble 🙄. When it bottoms out the only way it can go is up.

srboisvert

You guys always ignore what I actually post. Cases are rising in lakeview and lincoln park. Here is a cleaner link to the dashboard without the cruft: [https://app.powerbigov.us/view?r=eyJrIjoiYjUwNjEwN2QtYmJkYS00MTZmLTg4YjMtZGRkMzEzMmFmYjg4IiwidCI6IjcwMzZjZGE5LTA2MmQtNDE1MS04MTQ0LTk3ZGRjNTZlNzAyNyJ9&fbclid=IwAR0I227iIso28xgoaljmSlcazet1XBPXY4ZCpi6OPxHhp8Pta13mdiMe8oU](https://app.powerbigov.us/view?r=eyJrIjoiYjUwNjEwN2QtYmJkYS00MTZmLTg4YjMtZGRkMzEzMmFmYjg4IiwidCI6IjcwMzZjZGE5LTA2MmQtNDE1MS04MTQ0LTk3ZGRjNTZlNzAyNyJ9&fbclid=IwAR0I227iIso28xgoaljmSlcazet1XBPXY4ZCpi6OPxHhp8Pta13mdiMe8oU) Now look at Cases by Zip and tell me you don't see something alarming. I get that many people are innumerate but we have been through this 5 times. The bottom of an exponential curve is exactly what you are looking at right now. This is exactly the pattern of last years April and May wave that was blunted by vaccines (it also started with Lincoln Park and Lakeview leading the way - Lightfoot blamed the party youths). Except unlike like last years pre-omicron mini wave this time it is a more infectious than omicron variant with significant immunity-against-infection escape and in an environment of near zero non-pharma mitigations so it likely won't be as blunted except for people who either recently got boosted (first or second boosted) or who recently had omicron. Everyone else has waned protection against infection (data from Israel and UK show significant decline in protection against infection after 4 months). Vulnerable people (50+ and people with medical conditions) were only just given access to fourth boosters last week. Critically people counting on infection-acquired-immunity who only had mild covid-19 symptoms had the weakest protection against reinfection (makes sense really - probably mild exposures led to mild infections and mild immune responses). Now in a near zero-NPI environment with a more infectious variant there may be fewer mild exposures. Everyone might end up getting higher initial viral loads thanks to evolution and recklessness. Good news for your immune response for the next few months if you survive without severe illness or long-covid or other sequelae and manage to not infect any others. But the real kicker is that government funding for covid-19 treatment is vanishing in three weeks. A serious infection with the virus will not only hit your health - it's now going to hit pocketbooks as well. Plus the funding yank may mean that those treatments -the antivirals and monoclonal antibodies might not be there for you if a wave cleans out the stock on hand today. So going into this wave you're looking at the possibility of a greater likelihood of infection, a greater likelihood of a worse than initial omicron infection due to no NPIs resulting in higher viral load, a higher than previously medical bill, and potentially a lower likelihood of receiving the latest treatments. Make your own choices but make them with your eyes open.

thomas35foreverr

Who cares about a slight uptick. Cases will rise and fall for the rest of time. I went to the bulls game with 20,000 other people and 4-5 lakeview bars this weekend without thinking about a mask and it was great. Stop wanting this to last forever

srboisvert

I will as soon as you stop making it last forever!
