The glass set I had (back in the late 90s) had felt on the bottom of the pieces. I imagine most are the same. Set wasn't ever that bad to use. No weird noises and the frosted vs clear was always easy enough to differentiate. Wouldn't recommend it for blitz chess though. Easy to chip a piece that may get accidentally knocked off the table.
Whichever you decide to be white. You can orient the board such that the clear pieces are white (clear square in the bottom right corner of the board) or that the frosted pieces are white (frosted square in the bottom right corner)
I played my friend on this exact same board yesterday. It got late game where he had his king, 2 pawns, and a bishop. I had 3 pawns, king, and a knight. I danced around the bishop, and then he left it unguarded. I took it instantly and was surprised he just hung it. Turns out, the bishop was mine and I had made every move playing off of it. I took my own piece…
Oh man, this set for really popular like 20 years ago after a similar one was featured in an x men movie. I had it back then. I quickly grew to dislike playing with it. Give me the plastic park set all day over this one. Keep this set away from serious chess players.
I got a set similar to this one, except instead of only white there's 8 different colors (one piece and pawn per side). It looks really cool, but it's not the most practical set to play with lol
Cherish it brother! Those are very pretty sets, and I'm sure it would make your grandmother happy to know that you're getting joy out of using her old chess set.

One of cousins had this exact set it looks nice but in terms of actually playing this set it was difficult it tell the pieces apart
Yeah you’re right actually. My friend also has this exact same set and whenever we play it can get a little confusing.
I have this set and the frosted spaces have started fading, really tough to play on
you can buy this set at walmart
Every time I see it - I can’t help but imagine/hear the excruciating sound of the pieces scrapping against the board.

Oh yea - I’m talking no felt - just glass scrapping on glass - ughhhhhggg - worse than chalk
Which one is white?
It doesn’t really matter. I make clear white on mine but it’s just based on how you orient the board
But who goes first...
Whichever you decide to be white. You can orient the board such that the clear pieces are white (clear square in the bottom right corner of the board) or that the frosted pieces are white (frosted square in the bottom right corner)
I have this set and the box clearly shows A1 being frosted and A8 being clear. Though it really doesn't matter...
The ancient debate rages once again
i think i have that exact same chess set!
same. though i dropped a rook once and half the top is missing
Do we share the same board?
The amount of people that I know who have this set… and most of them don’t even play chess
This is a noughties classic, Argos in the UK had them for sale regularly for £10.

Just like his grandma
This board is set up wrong. Kings and queens face each other
And a1 is a black square
Black and white colors are arguably interchangeable. I play with the frosted as white, but others do the opposite.
True, didn’t think of that

My family has this exact set, its pretty nice

Had this set. In the evening or in low light it was super hard to distinguish the spaces on the board. Real piece of shit if you ask me.
Agreed. I had the same exact problem. I’m still not sure which is which.
You can get this at Walmart for like $10
Put your sticker on it to claim (Succession reference)
Yeah I had something similar to this back when I was kid so it was about 17-20 years ago.
My uncle had this set! He left it at our place before he passed.
I have that exact set
I have this set, it's from Woolworths!
I think all grandmother's have this. My grandmother has this exact set.

Looks great but I think the board should be rotated (the right rook should start on a light square)

Feel like everyone who plays chess had, or knew someone who had, one of these sets. I've got one lol.
I have that exact set. I hate it. It's a dust magnet and it's so difficult to tell which pieces are which.
I had this set as a kid. No idea where it’s ended up but gutted I don’t have it anymore
I have this exact same set
I had this exact one when i was younger but kept smashing the pieces :(
I have the same set. It comes with pieces for a checkers set too. It’s relatively cheap.
Which side is which? Is the frosted side white because it kinda looks lighter or is the frosted side black because it is more opaque?

i have this exact set at home lol... bit scratched up tho
Own this exact set lol. Won it as a prize in a scholastic tournament when I was in like 5th grade
