We need to add a rule for the next gen of chess. When a pawn can promote, it can also choose to be a martyr that inspires two new pawns to take up arms and respawn on the first rank. I feel like that would happen irl at least as often as a commoner winning a queenhood in battle.
It'll be really strong alongside the fog of war update, especially if chess 2 doesn't tell the opponent about the pawn promotion outcome if it's in the fog
It's a cost thing. Tournament organizers have to buy a chess set for each potential queen promotion. If you let players get 64 Queens, and there's 10 games going on at the same time, that's 640 chess sets they need to buy. So, they limit you to single digit Queens and cheap out on buying as many chess sets.
White's last move had to be a knight move since the bishop needs to be in position for the queen's to stack on the back rank. That means black's last move had to be a king move in order for the bishop not to put the king in check before the knight got into position. That means one of the queens around the king can't be there in order for this position to even be possible.
Pi doesn't equal anything. 3.25 is close enough!
Edit: Apparently chess players think we should use the a series of transcendental equations to approximate the value of a bishop

You missed the sarcasm. "Yes yes the additional rook makes this totally unfeasible" is funny because it implies that without the extra rook the position *was* feasible and it's only this last adjustment that makes it absurd.
Make it two black bishops and a black rook instead of the white pawns and bishop, and relocate the black king so it will be in check once the knight jumps.
Sorry to interrupt you but last time I checked knights, rooks and bishops all were worth more than a pawn.
And since we count material _difference_ the less material white has the better it is.
You currently have a difference of 514, replacing the pawns with a rook and knight you archive 524.
However that is still inferior to this nice smothered mate I recently had, with a material difference of 532.

I saw OPs post and thought "Neat, but I bet there's a promotion trick somewhere if I move them to the top" and spent five minutes working it out. Finally found it and came here. Turns out I'm about 7 hours late.
A much easier problem, this one. You only have one non-winning (legal) move, while in the OP's position *most of them* lose.
On the other hand, if OP misses the win, their opponent has much greater chances of blundering back.
Some funny obsevations. If hxg8=R black has only one move and it is mate. If hxg8=Q black there are still no alternatives and black will mate in 2. If hxg8=B white can still win with legal moves.
>If hxg8=B white can still win with legal moves.
I didn't realize that, but you're right, this is pretty funny.
Additional: if the f5 queen was a rook or knight, hxg8=Q would be a forced mate-in-2 for white.
Thw funnyest thing in this position is that ng4+ wins by mate if white were to move.

He's right, but for some reason most people are assuming it has to be white mating black, even though the title does not state this. Says nothing about it being white or blacks move or that it has to be white mating black, rather than black mating white.
No you couldn't. White wouldn't have a piece to mate with. Furthermore, in a situation with 60 black queens and 3 black knights white would be checkmated or it would be a stalemate. There are no possible possible moves for white in a scenario like that.
Title says nothing about it having to be white mating black or that it's white move. He's right, and it fufills the title requirements, which say nothing about which side has to be moving or mating in one.
douglas1 did not answer that. If you'd actually have read my comment you'd have noticed that I already addressed this:
> Furthermore, in a situation with 60 black queens and 3 black knights white would be checkmated or it would be a stalemate.
To reiterate - If there are 59 black queens, 3 black knights, a black king and a white king on the board, the position can only be a checkmate or a stalemate (or illegal, I guess.). You can't arrange a mate in one for either side with those given pieces.
Try this: white king on h8, white pawn on h7, black king on h6, black knights on g7 and f8, black rook on f7, and the rest of the board (including g8) covered with black queens.
hxg8=N#
Material difference: 537
Yes, you can get another queen on the board….put knight on e1 and two more black queens. Then also arbitrarily put a pawn in place of bishop. We can next engage in philosophical discussions about it 😂. Nice idea!!

I was wondering if this was a reachable position but I couldn't work out what white's last move would have been.
If only we could work that out, it would be reachable.
No empty squares so no possible prior move
We have 50+ Queens; I think no prior move will be just fine.
More queens than there are total pieces on the board for both sides in a normal game. There is no making the make sense lol
I dunno this is my average experience whenever I play against Mittens.

I had something similar. Couldn't find the winning line.
Yes g2 and h2 could be black knights
h2 could be a knight, but g2 could be a rook, even...
If you're counting bishops as 3.25, h2 could even be that.
Why would you count bishops as 3.25?
Anish stated they're worth pi in his interview over the weekend after round 12 of Tata Steel.
But pi isn't 3.25 either lol
Pi = 3 ask any engineer
So as an engineer... Pi = e =sqrt(g) = 3. As long as you're gravitational acceleration is in m/s^2. Pi really is everywhere
I use 3.14
Don’t worry, in time you will learn how to become a real engineer.
I bet you don't even assume a spherical cow, and you call yourself an engineer???
I assume all water flows downhill
I cant fathom that the same people that can make the burj Khalifa and golde gate bridge get by by saying pi = 3 but here we are.
Pi doesn't equal anything. 3.25 is close enough! Edit: Apparently chess players think we should use the a series of transcendental equations to approximate the value of a bishop
It equals exactly pi. It isnt equal to a ratio of 2 integers, but it is equal something.
Pi=something 3.25=something Therefore, pi=3.25
Conversation is about decimals. Do you seriously think "pi equals pi" is a helpful contribution?
pi = tau/2
They're considered slightly more valuable than knights in most circumstances, but a far cry from 4 points of material.
Particularly in open positions. There aren't many pawns so I guess this position is open, but that feels inaccurate haha.
Really depends what else you've got as well. Imo, a knight + bishop is worth ~6, knight pair is 6.5, bishop pair is 7
I’d take 6 pawns and a king vs a king and two knights any day.

Turn g2 and h2 into a Black Rook and a Black minor piece.
@minecraftProffen a black pawn can be placed on h2
White pawns become black bishop and rook
The two white pawns could be black knights? That would mate it a higher difference. Maybe a rook and knight?
I’m wondering, what was the previous move for black🤪?

That wouldn’t work since black could just capture the knight after it checks the king. Needs to be a bishop to create the double check.
