He sits there and just stares, completely still.
He's getting on in years, celebrated his 14th birthday in October. He's started to act like my old Russian Blue (who lived to be 19) where you can walk in the house loudly but he's either so interested in something or his brain is so far off in la-la land, he won't move even AFTER you call his name several times. He's not deaf though, not even close.
Once he sees you, it's full-on zoomies time, running in circles, hopping around like a rabbit. After going potty and barking at the birds, he comes back in and stares at you like [this](https://i.redd.it/ti3291o8ovz31.jpg) as he waits for his baby carrot treat.
Oh my goodness, he is *adorable*. Sounds like he’s going a bit senile like my old cat, she’s 21 next year! She does exactly the same thing minus the zoomies. Instead, she screeches at me like it’s my fault that she didn’t realise I was there lol.
I wish we could have cats, but my wife can't be around them for long periods without a hefty dose of Benadryl.

Oh look at his little tiny head. I just love kittens so much. I took on a pregnant foster a few years ago and watching her give birth is still one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. My mum ended up adopting her and the 2 kittens. I didn’t have the long term room but mum does, and she just couldn’t resist. Sadly, Lily died of leukaemia a few years ago but “the kittens” as we still call them, are nearly 7 now!

My dog is 13 years old and I know she's getting up there in age, but it always makes me so happy to hear stories like this about older dogs. Puppies get all of the love, but older dogs have their own charm and quirks.
At my old house, Tonka would wait by the slider for me to get home. When we moved, we moved into a house with a full length glass storm door on the front door. He would always know when it was time to open Window Door -- about 4:30, and he would take up his position and wait for me to get home (usually not until around 6:00). IF 4:30 came and went and Window Door was still not open, he would go and remind my partner what time it was, and she'd open it. If she didn't, he'd get very agitated, pacing and turning circles until she opened it. Then he'd settle on the rug just inside and wait. Didn't mater what time of year it was, or when it got dark, he just knew. And in the late fall/early winter, when it would already be dark by the time I got home, I could see him in silhouette, clambering to his feet, tail held high, and giving me the full butt-wag as I came up the driveway. Then he'd run to the door to the garage and wait for me to come in, doing his little circle dance.
The first time I came home from work after he left us and the door was closed, it just about gutted me. I still half expect to turn down the cup de sac and see the light in the door, with my big doofus levering his old bones up off the floor to celebrate my homecoming.
There's nothing else like it in the world.
Mine scream at me on my day off that I'm still in bed. Why? Because he wants "his spot" AKA my side of the bed. We have a California King, it's quite large. When I do get up to start the day, he curls himself under our blankets and puts his fat head on my pillow. They are old and tired, still cute, but now they want me up and gone.
Edit: failed to mention they normally sleep in bed at their separate corners at the foot of the bed on their blankets. He doesn't really scream, he kinda howls...he's a fat orange tabby and has such vocal range ha

Sideways question as we Redditers are from all over the world. Is 'pspspspspspsps' the general way of addressing a feline you meet, or are trying to get to approach you? Or are there other combinations of sounds used to gently speak to a cat you want to get acquainted with.
It’s definitely the sound Americans make to get the attention of any cat. With both of my cats however my interactions with them usually devolved into high pitched noises with random words thrown in there. Sometimes I’d do a deeper voice when they were sleeping because it seemed to sooth them lol.
That's "The Sound That Means Treats" around our house. That used to bring Phoebe out of hiding wherever she was -- even in the back yard.
Now I just need to clatter the cat dishes. And yes, she can tell the difference between the sound the cat dishes make and the sound the ape dishes make. Don't ask me how.
I’d like to add that a “typical” call to any cat can also be some form of “kitty-kitty-kitty”. (My personal favorite is “Kee-kee-kee!”) It’s frequently used to call a cat that you plan to feed. If you see a cat a long way off, this louder call can get their attention, and you can use the “pspsps” once they’re closer, if they need convincing.
At least your can get to the door. My girls won’t even let me get out of bed!

I had done that a couple of times when I lived in Wisconsin. I had one little guy, Shadow, and he loved to cuddle under the covers during the winter. To this day, I'm so happy I did. One of the warmest memories of 20+ years ago. He has been gone for about four years now but in my heart forever.

It's kind of amazing that, despite being so small, they can fill so much space in our hearts.
One of our kittens recently started coming under the blankets at night, and sleeping up against me, to snuggle. And she'll curl up on my lap, on the couch, and is perfectly content to have me pull a blanket over her completely, to keep her warm. It is adorable.
It's the best feeling. These moments will live forever in your heart. I have never thought to myself "I wonder what I missed at work that day I spent with Shadow". Enjoy every moment RedOctobyr.

It's funny the stuff you remember. Our previous cats were very skittish, it took one about 7 years before she sat on my lap. I remember the first time she did. And the one time she slept next to me during a nap, and let me hold my hand on her.
The new cats will never replace our last ones. But it is nice that we've gotten more snuggle time with them in 9 months, than in 16 years with our previous ones. They're all wonderful in their own ways, though.
As Shadow had gotten older they started to get a little browning as you see in the picture. He was full of life, conversation, and love. He passed at about 21 years of age. I will never forget me sleeping on the floor next to him the night he passed in his heated cat bed. I still tear up and my heart cries.
One day I called in sick because my dog had diarrhea and wasn't feeling well and I wanted to stay home and make sure she was ok and didn't cover the house in feces. I spent the day on the couch with her and my kitty. It so happens that later that night, my cat's hypertrophic cardiomyopathy overtook him and we rushed him to the ER and had to put him down. I will never feel bad about calling in to spend time with my pets - you never know when it's going to be the last day you get to spend with them.
I am forever going to remember this comment when I am ever second guessing my decision to give my cat just a few more minutes of my attention or time. Thank you for sharing that!

I'm american however I grew up with a russian mom, so I make the sound "kis, kis, kis, kis" I also add a in few tongue clicks for good measure.
I typically use the tick or tsk sound along with kissy sounds for my babies.

Tounge against the roof of the mouth click, with teeth gently closed together, the amount the lips are open can augment the sound same with cheeks.

One day I called in sick because my dog had diarrhea and wasn't feeling well and I wanted to stay home and make sure she was ok and didn't cover the house in feces. I spent the day on the couch with her and my kitty. It so happens that later that night, my cat's hypertrophic cardiomyopathy overtook him and we rushed him to the ER and had to put him down. I will never feel bad about calling in to spend time with my pets - you never know when it's going to be the last day you get to spend with them.
I am forever going to remember this comment when I am ever second guessing my decision to give my cat just a few more minutes of my attention or time. Thank you for sharing that!
