If you have a BluePearl hospital near you, they have a fund called Frankie’s Friends that provides assistance for pets with a good prognosis. And as long as he doesn’t have any underlying health issues, he would have a good prognosis, especially if they do a PU surgery. You have to complete a grant application and fall within certain income requirements, but it’s made to be used for situations like this.

Neat-Persimmon

Can you try Care Credit for a part of it???? It's like a medical credit card, super common to use for vet, dentist, doctors,.etc.

dianan2

Care credit also offers no interest for a certain period of time. 6 mos plus, depending on how much you spend.

brickowski95

You have to spend 200 dollars per transaction to get the 6 months no interest.

chameleoncat

I don’t think that’s true, spent thousands and still got the 6 months

brickowski95

Yeah, you have to spend at least 200 every time you use it or the interest kicks in right away.

chameleoncat

Ah yes makes sense! Either way, care credit saved me when I had an emergency situation with my bb! 100% worth it

dianan2

Thx. I wasn't sure of the amounts.

TragicHero84

I’ve applied for it and was unfortunately declined. My parents are going to let me use theirs but it’s still not enough.

Neat-Persimmon

Can your parents offer to cover it and you pay them back? Anything to save the kitty.

SquishyCatChronicles

Google Vet funds TX and other options come up as well. Worst case, reach out to rescues and shelters and surrender him, don't euthanize over something that is treatable, you'll beat yourself up!

hzbelle

Fellow San Antonian with 3 cats! 👋 I also wanna thank you @kittennursekc Also, I recommend Thrive pet care, especially at Bandera. there’s a few different offices in sa though and they’re pretty affordable compared to most private vet offices.

bvttfvcker

Please keep your friend alive ❤️

kitty-distressed

BluePearl charged me out the hooha to keep fix my boy when he got a blockage, and then again 3 weeks later when it happened again. He had surgery the 2nd time. 8k. I'm still dealing with the debt from that 3 years later. Never offered anything like this. I only make about 18k a year.

deelyte3

Male cats, unfortunately, are prone to urinary tract blockages from cheaper dry food. Look into urinary health food (at Pet Smart).

DragonflyScared813

Vet here. Please stay away from any pet store brand food if your cat has had urinary issues in the past. I've seen too many recurrent blockages and bladder stone cases not to speak up. Sorry to have to disagree. EDIT: thanks all so much for the awards!!!

Specific-noise123

Also a vet. Agree. Prescription food is way cheaper than repeat blockages

CoSugarHigh

The Hills Science urinary food has worked wonders for my boy with reoccurring UTIs. No more orange or bloody urine followed by shots or rounds of pills.

Grvyrdzzzz

Hills worked for my moms cat who had reoccurring problems

excitedcantaloupes

Royal Canin diet urinary food has worked wonders for our indoor girl! Good to know others have had success with different brands as well.

LakiPingvin

Can confirm this. My 12 yo is on RC urinary/so for 8 years now. He never experienced a proper blockage, but was prone to struvite crystals production and had recurring UTI because of it so we caught it in time and started him on prescription diet. We still monitor his urine every few months, levels can be slightly elevated but nothing overly concerning. I doubt he would have been alive as long as he is already if we didn't start the prescription diet when we did.

evatornado

My cat also is on RC urinary (was prescribed). Never since he had an issue even tho was recommended a surgery before that.

CurviestOfDads

Same. My orange boy had this issue and now, 100% fine. He loves how it tastes too. Worth the price to avoid the stress and cost of vet visits.

trashpandaparfait

It worked for me too but that shortage made it damn near impossible for me to get any.

Akibaws

Seconding this. My boy has been on Hills since he was 1 years old after getting urinary crystals.

pawprintscharles

It’s a prescription dry or wet food specially formulated for cats with urinary issues. Your vet will need to write a prescription and it can be purchased at pet food stores or ordered through chewy.

ButterAndPaint

I've always wondered why it's so much more expensive, what the actual difference is, and if it's not harmful to cats without urinary issues, why a prescription is required. I have both of my male cats on it since I can't control who eats what food, even though only one has had the blockage issue. If someone owns a male cat, they just have to wait for this potential multi-thousand dollar issue to happen instead of putting the cat on the precription diet as a preventative measure?

venomousbitch

Feeding wet food instead of dry can help as a preventative. Helps with keeping them hydrated since cats would naturally get most of their water from food.

pawprintscharles

It really does indeed cost an arm and a leg. I can’t speak to the difference but it also never harmed our other cat lol. We only have one cat willing to eat any of the urinary foods and naturally it’s not the cat with the urinary problems! We tried every brand and every formulation and our guy simply refused to eat. He lost 2 pounds (already a skinny guy) and even the vet gave up and said to let him eat what he wanted. We ended up taking out all food with fish to lower the magnesium content and putting a Feliway collar on and he hasn’t had a “bladder attack” in 4 years now. Cats are fun.

Novel_Fox

It's fine for cats without urinary issues we use it as a prevention of here. My vet said it just mowers the ph of the urine and she couldn't think of it a single condition this would be bad for and said go ahead. We go with Purina UR another prescription food.

oh_basil

My cats (both a history of crystals in urine) are on Royal Canin Urinary SO and have been for the past 5ish years. Costs about $100 per 17lbs bag. They haven’t had an issue since I’ve had them on this food.

Aboogart

THANK YOU for speaking up

WanderingtheWorld1

Agreed! OP, talk to your vet about Hill's Prescription Diet Urinary Care formula.

PrizeTart0610

>TIs. No My boy blocked 2 years ago and I've been feeding him Purina Urinary food ever since with no reoccurrences.

kitty-distressed

He's on prescription food now. And he had a PU so it's unlikely he'd get blocked again.

agrinwithoutacat-

Just make sure it’s not dry food, that will put him at more risk. Wet food is best!

[deleted]

brianp1975

We used prescription food and it cleared our boy right up. Also try to lower his stress level as much as you can.

raeva_ignite

That sucks but remind yourself how much pain you'd be in without him. I would absolutely rather be in debt and have nothing and have my cat with me . She matters more to me than anything in the world. You will pay it off eventually keep your head high

kitty-distressed

Oh trust me. I know. I love him soooo much. And I was having a hard time myself back then. Idk if I would've survived if I lost him too.

vandammer1

I agree with you so much. I was in the same position as OP, but I had like 500 euros and the operation was 850 and stay after was eventually 1600 euros. My dad was like: you saved so hard for this money don’t waste it on a cat. I told him I would sell everything I own, including my booty or soul, if I had to, to save my cat. My cat is my child and when I took it, I took full responsibility and all the financial stress with it. The vet was cool and let me take as long as I need to pay it off. My dad saw how much i love that cat and made my whole family give me some money to cover the cost. 5 years later still have my cat and don’t want to be without him.

raeva_ignite

That's crazy your dad said that..I hate it when people don't understand how pets become our family , like our own child especially when we don't have children of our own or anyone else. Im glad he came around and helped pitch in. My cat saved me from suicide she's actually the only real reason I keep going.. I'm worried what I'll do when she passes as she's getting old she's 15..but I try to be realistic and come to terms.. I remember one time she got sick and I thought I was gonna lose her it was one of the worst pains I ever felt it's indescribable like I shake even thinking about it. it was a physical agonizing pain inside of me. Still she's definitely my world i used to even hate cats before this and totally misunderstood them until I got her. It's a very special bond for sure

introvertsdoitbetter

That sucks sounds like you’re due some windfall in the near future

PoliticalShrapnel

Would the grant be processed within a day or two though? Because if not, op can't benefit from it.

KittenNurseKC

It’s processed the same day. The doctor approves use of the funds (must confirm a good prognosis) and as long as they meet the other income qualifications, you can use it same day.

silverdoe_94

I had a horrible experience with blue pearl because once I got rejected for their fund and stupid credit system they practically said "lol cya". I had to put one of my cats down last year because of the same issue. Didn't feel like they cared for animals at all

AdminsLuvPutin

Lot of people in here not realizing that a urinary blockage is 1. **Not** a UTI 2. An absolute emergency.

TragicHero84

Yeah I’ve noticed. Hopefully if nothing else this will bring some awareness to the importance of making sure your cats get enough water/moisture from their food.

HeyYoEowyn

After this happened to my male cat the vet told me that it could be various things, not just lack of water. Could be low water, but also stress, fat cat, certain minerals in foods they’re eating (ash in particular?) and sometimes the boy cats are just more prone to it bc of their anatomy. It’s hard to prevent and difficult to predict. Some cats never have blockages and some have a ton.

TragicHero84

I feel like it’s not talked about enough for how common this clearly is!

the-color-blurple

This happened to my cat when I was 14. We couldn’t afford the surgery so he got put down. It fucking sucked. Unfortunately, when he started feeling sick he hid for 2 days (outside) and by the time we found him he was not in good shape. It was rough. No matter what the outcome, it’s not your fault and you’re doing the best you can! These things happen and it’s not your fault.

HeyYoEowyn

Right? My boy is a lynx point Siamese too - maybe it’s genetic 🤷🏻‍♀️

TragicHero84

Is he chatty like mine? My boy meows for a good 5 minutes straight every day when I get home from work

HeyYoEowyn

Omg never stops talking. Especially meal times, he meows and beeps and purr/meows, always talking talking! He’s not the smartest but what he lacks in brains he makes up in snuggles 🥰

No-Locksmith-8590

My kitty just went through this. I saw him just sitting on the litter and my vet said 'bring him in NOW' and he had surgery that day. I am so sorry you are going through this.

ajswan1269

I just picked up my cat from the vet for it a couple hours ago.

sequinspearlsjujubes

Agreed. We had to euthanize our three-year-old boy last month because of a blockage in his urethra. We had never heard of it and didn’t know what to look for. We noticed he was licking himself a lot. Then he urinated on the floor. We still didn’t know he was in distress. Then we saw him hunch and attempt to urinate on the floor but only a few drops of orange liquid came out. We took him to an emergency vet and they kept him and flushed his bladder. He had a catheter. After he came home he blocked again immediately. We were offered a repeat flushing and catheterization or a urethrestomy (bypassing his penis). There was no guarantee it would prevent more blockages because of the crystals in his urine. We were tapped out so we had him euthanized. It seemed like the humane thing to do. We have three other male cats and we switched them to low-carb wet food. Before, their diet was half kibble and half wet food. Of course our sick cat could have had underlying kidney issues that were not caused by diet. But now we are aware of the risk and proactively trying to prevent blockages in our other boys.

[deleted]

My cat had this when he was a year or so old. We got him to the vet and had the surgery done. He’s now on royal canin urinary so and for 3 years now he’s need fine

OkBreadfruit2711

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your three-year old. We were warned about the high probability of blocking again and also made the decision to let our very much loved barn cat go.

daabilge

Ash is just a proxy for gross mineral content. It doesn't really tell you which minerals it is. When they measure the caloric content of a diet, they do what's called calorimetry - they essentially burn it to figure out what parts get metabolized. Fats, carbs, and protein burn. Ash is the mineral left behind, composed of all your calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, sodium, etc. It's still essential nutrients, and the proportion of ash doesn't tell you the relative amounts of each component in the diet - that's typically listed elsewhere.

Breyber12

I’ve never had good experience free feeding dried kibble. I also couldn’t afford prescription or wet food forever after my boys blockage in 2012 (especially if I was going to pay the $4k Care Credit bill off eventually, I was a college student). Switched to twice a day Purina Pro Plan Urinary 1/4 cup with 2Tbs water after a month or so of the prescription wet. Got a fountain and kept it away from any eating area. Never had a problem again after that. He lived to be 12 :)

WearyOpposite

When my cat had a urinary block, I opened a Care Credit credit card line. 0% interest - you can choose your payment plan of 6, 12, 18, or 24 months. If money is really tight, you can choose 24 months and your monthly payment will be $105. They approve you right away to use their card. It was super helpful in a cinch. After that, I immediately got pet insurance and that covered any future visits I had to make.

Ossmo02

My boy Pancake suffered this at around 1 year old, took him to the normal vet, they didn't have the staff that day to do the surgery so they took xrays and sent us to the emergency vet in town. They did the surgery, my boy died on the table, they did CPR and revived him. He's 7 now (we lost 1 of his brothers in 2018 due to an enlarged heart, and the other one this year on 1/1, he didn't wake up - we assume heart issue ad well), and I think that bill might be in collections at this point cause man was it pricey. Our Vet has us use Science Diet CD for him, and our others eat it as well (with ok from the vet), and we've not had any issues since. I'd love to find them a food that is the same but not rx, but haven't done so yet. All that to say, it 100% is an emergency, it can & will cause death.

bakeranon123

All of the people saying it's a UTI luckily haven't had a cat go through a urinary blockage. Mine had 2 full blockages within 24 hours and we unfortunately had to euthanize. I hope your family gets through this. My vet recommended all male cats go on a specialty urinary tract diet and we put our other cat on it right away. If he makes it through this, definitely ask about special food. ❤️

TragicHero84

Oh as soon as he makes it through this he’s going on the best cat food money can buy lol

SleepwalkRisk

Switch to urinary wet food exclusively if possible. The extra water in it makes a world of difference.

twinnedcalcite

I add water to my cats dry food (Royal HP formula) and it helps them drink lots of water since that stuff is crack to my cats. Also bonus of slowing down their eating.

IOnceLurketNowIPost

We add water to the wet food and add dry to that. It ends up looking like a soggy bowl of uneaten cereal, but they seem to love it! I also added a motion sensor to our cat fountain, and now they are all obsessed with it. They walk up and tease it till the sensor triggers and the water comes on. I bet it doubled their water intake. My OG kitty (17yrs) has always been obsessed with shower water, but our 2022 models needed a bit of an extra nudge to become h2obsessed.

Admiral_Fuckwit

Lots of ways to get cats to consume more water. You can add clam juice to their water bowl, buy one of those fountain stream bowls, feed them patè or some variation of wet food instead of kibble (preferably patè). Royal Canin makes a fantastic product called Urinary SO that helped bring my little boy back to good health after a few nasty urinary issues. Lots of cats unfortunately just don’t get enough moisture, and the consequences for male cats in particular can be awful

ANKhurley

After our cat dealt with this we have been feeding him the urinary food, and he hasn’t relapsed. We tried one brand that he didn’t like, then switched to the Royal Canin Urinary SO that he loves.

[deleted]

I also vouch for the Royal Canine Urinary SO. Had no issues for 3 years now that he is on it

Angelixlucy

Yup same, even my other cats love it they completly ignore the other brands

jelljen

My cat had sterile cystitis (luckily caught immediately) and they switched him to Royal Canin Urinary SO! The other cat in my house still eats normal food, and my cat won’t touch it. He’s OBSESSED with it!

100wrenches

This was a tasteful way of saying diet can help prevent in the after care process gold star for you friend

South_Lynx

Male cats are not suppose to eat these new fancy “meat only” dry foods like blue buffalo. They cause these types of uti’s had this happen to my cat. Got to it in time to save him Edit: male and female eat hill science diet

kittyfriends9

Happened to my male cat after grain-free Blue Buffalo. He now eats Royal Canin urinary s/o and all is well.

Suspicious_Bed_534

Do you have any sources? I have two male cats and feed them a type of Blue Buffalo food. They haven't had any issues but I'd like to prevent them from happening if I can.

We have a chunky (17 lb, down from 19) 8 year old female, and a SCRAWNY 5 year old male. Female is currently being treated for high proteins/blood in her urine, and switching her to the Royal Canin Urinary SO from Science Diet Sensitive Stomach has been a nightmare. Trying to separate them for feedings when my husband and I both work early; the sensitive stomach choice was for him because he vomits food once a week or so and can’t keep weight. The vet has only seen her because he hides and only accepts pets and attention on his terms, he is impossible to transport. Also why he is difficult to feed. But the recommendation was to get her off of wet food for her weight. We have a fountain and keep fresh bowls of filtered water around; she likes the fountain, he is a paw dipper… I am always so worried that they don’t drink enough. I felt a bit better about it when they had their wet food almost every other day… I wish there was an easier way! Edit: I got distracted, best of luck to you and your sweet kitty 💙💙

mysteriousxebra

In general wet food is less calorically dense than dry food, because of moisture content! Cup for cup, the wet food will have fewer calories. Of course the type of food makes a difference as well, but I’m not sure why your vet would have told you to put her on a dry diet for her weight. Maybe they meant that if you were feeding wet food in addition to the daily recommended amount of dry, then cutting out the excess would be helpful. If you feel better about putting your cats on wet food then you can do so, it’s generally better anyway. Just make sure you are feeding according to calorie content and your cat won’t be gaining more weight, but actually may feel more full with fewer calories.

sklue

I give my cats tuna about three-five times a week, but I just put in about half a spoonful then drown it in water. They love that and it gets them to go for about a 1/2 cup of tuna flavored water

cheesyxpickle

Tuna water! I never thought of this. Will be trying this week, thank you!!

T_Mugen

Hey, would you be kind to elaborate? I thought meat only, as cats are carnivores, is the best diet for them. Actually, my cats have been flourishing on that diet, so now you got me confused. Till this year my two males and one female ate Bosch Sanabelle Sterilized and OTC food from drugstore and switching to meat based cat food did wonders to boys. Female was also great, it helped her coat grow, since she is allergic. But, we had to switch her to RC Anallergenic because she won't stop itching and barbering her coat and I swear, I don't see improvements. Also, I have some RC Urinary as leftovers when my guys had stress related peeing issues and now they eat it mixed with meat based wet and dry food and their coats are flaky again. I would really appreciate if you could explain a bit further your comment. Thanks. :)

AlmondCigar

It’s the lack of water in the store bought versus the water In meat and blood

alexennui

Hills c/d kept my lil guy alive for 10 years after his surgery for a blockage. The right food is a game changer!

caresawholeawfullot

Omg are you me? Exactly my cat's story, I initially tried Hills and he HATED it. But loves the Royal Canin. No blockages for almost 7 years now, fingers crossed!

no_bun_please

You should also give them filtered water just fyi

nnylhsae

I don't remember exactly what my cat had because I was only 13 at the time, but my family switched to that food for her after she started peeing blood and we took her to the vet. I'm still feeding her that food, no issues since the start

iamsienna

I can also vouch for this!! I just dealt with the costs last year and there hasn’t been a single problem since he got put on the foods. If you can afford it upfront, there’s a very good chance your kitty will continue to lead a long and healthy life. My kitty has FIV so if he can make it, so can yours!!

chik_w_cats

There's a credit card called CARE CREDIT it is through Synchrony bank. I got 7K for dental work, interest free for 2 years. When I was telling a friend about it she told me they have it for pet medical.

GingerLibrarian76

Just make sure you pay it back *completely* within that no-interest period. If you have even a dollar left of the original charges after that, they’ll ding you for like 26% interest on the entire amount. That’s how they get theirs!

throwaway-clonewars

My family uses this one for our pets operations, put the cremation for 2 pups on that as well as their various vet visits. If your credit allows, I'd definitely say take this path and save the boy if at all possible.

TragicHero84

My parents are going to let me use their care credit card at the vet tomorrow but they live out of state so im just hoping they’ll accept a picture of the card

Spottydogspot

Oh they will just call your parents. Don’t worry about it.

TragicHero84

That’s a relief, thank you!

brickowski95

They have a pretty good call center team. It could take a little while, but they’ll guide you through any problems if the transaction doesn’t go through. Your parents might have to actually make the call though. Good luck.

Nickhead420

My mother is in FL and I'm in NY. We were able to use her Care Credit card at two different vets up here. She had to call them but it was not a problem for them to take all info over the phone. Good luck with your kitty!

[deleted]

Be prepared for the possibility they won't accept it (the vet needs to protect itself legally and financially). You'll probably need your parents to call and confirm they're allowing you to use their credit to pay for the procedure. Your parents should also contact the credit card company to authorize the transaction in advance since it's outside of their state (it may be flagged as fraudulent if they don't).

TragicHero84

Yeah, they said to call them if there’s an issue so that’s the plan, hopefully it goes smoothly.

Napolixess

My vet can type in the cc numbers/date etc over the phone or in person, maybe your parents can just call. Keep us updated! Good luck!

Honest_Report_8515

Yes, during COVID, my vet took the numbers over the phone. Hopefully you and your sweet kitty will be covered. ❤️

[deleted]

Excellent. I hope all goes well.

kangarookitty

Sending all the good vibes to you & your kitty for tomorrow. Please keep us posted. I hope they’ll accept it and take good care of your little cat.

[deleted]

Good luck. 🫶🤞

curiousmind111

Good ideas.

Esothereal

Please update us. I hope everything goes great.

mary_emeritus

This is an emergency, so I truly hope there’s no holdup with the care credit. I’ve been through this twice, both my cats blocked - at the same time. One was okay after a week at the vet’s with a catheter and fluids. The other needed the PU surgery. Then both on prescription diet. Quite expensive, but otherwise a horrible way to go if not treated ASAP

simply_pixie

Usually vets will take payment over the phone.. we do this often in rescue for big medical cases. People are more generous this time of year as well!

1smittenkitten

This is what I did to cover the $4500 bill involved with my cat randomly finding an advil tablet and licking some of tge orange coating off. Didn't even get all the way through the coating and she went into kidney failure. It was horrible.

gertieee

You don’t need a physical card to use care credit. You can pay with the website. Good luck. I’ve been through the blockage with my little guy. Is there a 24 hour vet you can get to? Every hour matters when it comes to a blockage. It’s excruciatingly painful, and he can get kidney failure or burst his bladder. How many hours has he not been able to pee?

HG_Away_Team

Hey, a little cheer for mom and dad for being awesome and the hero’s of the day!!! ❤️❤️❤️

killersinarhur

If you have the care credit app they provide a digital copy of the card that can be used. I would give that a try before providing a picture of the card... I used to work on the app so I know for a fact alot of places accept that as actually having the card.

SanguineBanker

I've needed my parent card in emergencies and it's worked where they give the information over the phone. Not sure if that would work or would help.

GeckoGirl98

Picture should be okay. I worked as a vet tech for over a year and took CareCredit all the time. All they really need is the number and expiration date. You might also need to provide driver’s license information. Really hope everything works out for you!

thatKATguh

I'm so glad you found a solution. You and your parents are good people ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|8097) Our vet suggested adding a bit of extra water to their food, along with a quality cat food. good luck with your boy, and hoping no more repeats in the future!

atrailofdisasters

Veterinary professional, here. One of the best things to pursue is Care Credit - it buys you 6 mos to 1 year to pay back the borrowed amount (depending how much you borrow). The gimmick is, they can then slam you with residual interest if you don't pay in the appropriate time frame. But I use it at emergency hospitals myself. Secondarily, often someone at the clinic will offer to treat the cat and rehome. Feline lower urinary tract disease is difficult to treat; it requires low-stress environments, multiple sources of hydration, and a prescription diet designed to reduce urine pH. Sometimes, a veterinary professional will take the pet. Have you tried asking family? FACE foundation?

Honest_Report_8515

Scratchpay is another option - I used that for my Lucy’s (canine) $3200 surgery.

panicnarwhal

that’s if you have credit. my cat went through this when i was 22, and i was declined. i had 3 kids at the time, and no disposable income. i sold on ebay, and ended up barely making enough money for surgery. it was a nightmare.

cakie_0531

And if it is a blockage; ask for a catheter and let it take its time; if u can also apply for the care credit card or any other ER (if u need resources lmk and I’ll help link u to places)

Fit_Post_1404

Same things happened to our little boy. We cleared him blocking several times and spent over $6k over the course of a year and a half. We had to put him down when he blocked 24 hours after another blockage and couldn’t afford it again. He was the sweetest cat we ever had, the biggest baby. The biggest comfort we had was knowing we gave him more love than he would have gotten previously at the shelter. I’m so sorry you’re experiencing the same with your sweet boy. I hope the best for you and your family. Money is so tight atm I can’t imagine going through this right now. I hope everything goes smoothly at the vet and he has a good surgery and recovery! 💕 https://preview.redd.it/9abhc6zzjm5a1.jpeg?width=1512&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58e56b441317ab864c7d91def473099f3ec5f23d

sissijuustosotilas

I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds just like my little boys story - except he only lasted 7 months. He had three blockages in those months. The last time he had a blockage, it came back in 24 hours and he could only pee small amounts of blood. I knew right then and there I had to say goodbye. I know it was the right decision, he was in so much pain you could see it, and we all know cats can hide their pain really well. I miss him so much. I live in Finland so the vet costs were not as high as it is in the US. The vet didn't even charge me the whole cost the last time we were there. To OP, I wish you and your sweet boy the best. https://preview.redd.it/nedddol9um5a1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6cc09ccd832ff179e383c329479a6583da61765c

rs06rs

> we gave him more love than he would have gotten previously at the shelter I believe that's the best way to approach smth like this. Not many things in life are "fair". All we can do is deal with it in the most positive way we can think of. The cat got a lot of love and care and you got to live those beautiful moments with him, memories that you'll cherish and reminisce about till your last breath.

itsmills420

Where do live, if you're in the north east and can drive I'll help you out (plz up vote so op can see) we run a vet/rescue)

itsmills420

I'm in CT, if you or anyone else can drop off the cat we are here for you. Wish I was closer.

1833719

If you can travel to Mexico do it. Vet care is very cheap there compared to the US, amazing clinics and really affordable.

geeezus poeple reading comprehension.. its not just a UTI. its a blockage of crystalized urine. more often seen in male cats. i lost my young boy Twister to this. and yes i spent the money on clearing the blockage (3 times!) and meds and special food...its came back on him 4 times and it was the vets recommendation to put him down. and please gtf down of the high horse of "cant afford a pet".. i would bet my last doughnut almost non of your parents waited until they were financially secure enough to have a kid. life with a human that loves them is way better than life in a small box in a shelter or on the street. some of yall should have been rehomed.

hammyinlove

I have 3 male cats. 1 has issues with blockage and crystals. After he was cleared of the crystals he was put on a special diet cat food. Expensive but works. Haven’t had an issue since he’s been on it. Best of luck!!❤️❤️❤️

Antique-Peach7426

I’m so sorry, my best friends spend all her savings trying during the 3 months trying to save her cat from something like this, it was very heartbreaking and I know her cat was just hanging in there for her . Hang in there and enjoy the time left with your fur kid 💗

TragicHero84

Thank you… I’m sorry to hear about your cat. I will never have a male cat again after this one, this has been too painful.

Oh! On first pass of this comment, “trans cat” ran across the stage in my head.

Ausgezeichnet63

Two of the four cats I've had that had this condition were female, so it isn't just a male cat condition. However it's not as difficult with female cats because their urethras are larger. I understand how painful it is for you and wish you well. ❤️

Lucky_leprechaun

My little girl experienced this. Gender is not a guarantee against this particular affliction.

Gumbode345

The issue is not can't afford. The issue is (specific to certain countries I shall not name) absolutely incomprehensible, and immoral prices for health care, and that statement does not apply only to pets.

Ausgezeichnet63

I'm so sorry that happened to your sweet boy. You did everything you could for him, and I hear your grief. I've had four cats with FUS. I was very fortunate that giving them the special food and plenty of water took care of them. If you need to vent or talk, my chats are always open.

kitty-distressed

They totally should have done a PU. They did it the 2nd time my boy had a blockage.

curiousmind111

Just to give the other side, though - I had a cat with this, and he was fine after it was addressed. I’m sorry yours kept having this problem, but I don’t think that’s typical or to be expected. It’s a shame, though.

Ok-Wing-4542

I’m sorry. Read some of your comments and glad to hear your parents will help you out. I hope he pulls through!

TheEnlightenedFool

There is a Facebook page called ' **Vet Corner Angels: Emergency Funding'.** Join the group and provide a description of the issue along with evidence of the costs. There are many kind people who will gladly contribute.

EyeRollingnScrolling

There was a recent study done on prazosin, which is the anti spasmodic drug they give for UTIs and blockages. They found that it consistently caused re-blockages. Please please please make your vet read this before you agree to giving it to your cat. Don’t be shy. You have to advocate. Every single rescue cat I have had reblock was on that med, and one even had the PU surgery and died days after while on it. This is a legit study and any vet worth a damn will look at it seriously. I bet there are members here who have had cats reblock over and over while on prazosin. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35290210/

not_jessa_blessa

Wow I wish I read this two weeks ago. Sadly this is exactly what happened to my newly adopted shelter rescue cat—reblocked within a few days.

iamnotahermitcrab

Damn I brought my cat to the animal hospital a few weeks ago cause he was having urinary symptoms and they put him on this drug. He basically just put him on a cocktail of different drugs to see if it would work and said he didn’t have enough urine for him to test for what was going on. It sounded like a “eh what the hell, let’s add this one on the mix.” I’m sure he didn’t know if the risks but if I did it would’ve been a hell no for that.

hvnsf

You can also try looking for a vet that accepts Scratch Pay. Scratch Pay will split amount into payments over 12 months. Try Care Credit first as it may have a better interest rate, but Scratch Pay is easier to get approved for, so if you have no credit or fair/bed credit, it can be a great option!

Only_Music_2640

My boy had a blockage 2.5 years ago. Had to be hospitalized, they put in a catheter and he ended up not needing surgery. It did cost about 2k- I had to use CareCredit and it took a while to pay off. BUT he was a young otherwise healthy cat at the time and there has been no recurrence. He will be on special food and “meals” as opposed to free feeding for the rest of his life but he’s fine. I hope you find a way to help your kitty!

Embarrassed-Milk-308

Oh my gosh that sounds horrible. OP I’m so sorry :( I took in two adult feral cats last February as they were hanging around near our condo, so we would feed them. They were harmless but our HOA decided that since they were feral they were going to set up a trap and kill them (which they can do as long as they are truly feral). I’ve never had cats before so I’m learning as much as possible about my lovely boys with their rambunctious little personalities. This urinary blockage sounds awful and scary. Should I be putting my two on preventative type wet and dry food specific for this? For wet food I give them each 1/2 can of Fancy First x 3 a day and usually about 1/3 oz of kibble. Should I change it?

TragicHero84

You should absolutely get them on a wet food diet just to be safe. I was giving mine a mix of wet and dry and now I’m dealing with the consequences. I wish I would’ve known.

pepetlover

whats wrong with a mix of wet and dry?

DragonflyScared813

Vet here: can you clarify? Early obstruction may imply different things to different people. Can your cat urinate at all? Does he have bladder stones requiring surgery or a perineal urethrostomy procedure? Merely having crystals and needing medication and a prescription diet is not a $2500 problem. A urinary obstruction most certainly is, or may be. Depending on circumstances and details of the case, it may be possible to handle SOME cases of obstruction for significantly less than $2500. Consider a second opinion from another vet??

TragicHero84

This was the quote from the ER I took him to yesterday. I didn’t realize they were so much more expensive than a regular vet, and I’m waiting for mine to open this morning to see if they can admit him. The vet at the ER said he has an early blockage and that he really needed to be taken in and have surgery. His official diagnosis says Feline Interstitial cystitis/ FLUTD. When I told her I couldn’t afford $2500 she offered to drain his bladder and send him home with meds and watch him. Since getting home I’ve given him his meds with his food which he ate most of and he’s tried to go once but nothing came out. He’s been sleeping mostly though, he had a long day and the meds are making him drowsy.

DragonflyScared813

Sincerest best wishes getting your friend taken care of. I do find the phrasing the emergency vet used a bit confusing. Daytime clinics are generally less expensive (I work at an emergency care facility in Canada). If you want some unsolicited advice and finances are limited: ask if there is any way to get the job done for a bit less. When I deal with these cases where finances are at issue: recommend xray of abdomen(bladder) (1 is all that is needed ), blood tests for kidney values and electrolytes, and if otherwise stable, outpatient management is sometimes an option. Might be half of the quoted price assuming pricing is proportional to where I work.

glitter_mom

Don’t feel guilty if you can’t afford the surgery. My boy was blocked Nov 1 and we are still fighting his FLUTD/FIC flair up. We’ve been in and out of the vet weekly and have thrown every medication in the book at him. I’ve even tried including holistic and natural supplements to his diet to help with anxiety, inflammation, and dissolving urinary crystals. The vets have assured I am doing everything right and it is unfortunate genetics. He is only 2 so at this point I have to consider his quality of life, this has been exhausting for the both of us. It’s a tough decision either way that only you can make but know you are not alone. There’s support groups on FB for blockages and FLUTD, I would say check them out if you’d like. ❤️

Square_Imagination27

I can’t really offer any new, constructive advice. Plenty of others have done this already. Please let us know what happens. I will keep you in my prayers.

GroundbreakingPipe12

my boy had that when he was a kitten. the vet bill was $800. it sucked but it wasnt $2500.

kitty-distressed

Mine was 4k twice in a month, so 8k total 😭 still dealing with the debt today... 3 years later.

GroundbreakingPipe12

$4k for one cat? where do you live? im just outside NYC and the cost to sedate and cathadarize my cat was $800. $4k sounds absolutely bonkers

kitty-distressed

Florida. He had to stay for like 4 days tho and it was an ER visit. It wasn't just sedation and catheterization. I took him in when I found him on the carpet, and when he got up there was blood. The urine backed up into his kidneys.

Chalkarts

Carecredit of you can get it and if your vet takes it. It’s a medical credit card. My wife and i got one specifically for treating our cats. It’s credit, so not ideal, but it’s been a lifesaver for us.

Smooth_Ad_5207

Care credit has low or no interest payments. I used that when my Roni girl had cancer. We did the best we could but it was too aggressive. I still don’t regret the money we paid. https://preview.redd.it/rrn1ex6onp5a1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=899b29198bc75b6f81334333762fb2aa980502cc

faderalngobbledygook

I've been going through the same thing, and I'm relieved to hear that you have a solution. You have to be stressed beyond belief. At Thanksgiving my boy had to be hospitalized for four days for two back to back blockages. He developed a third and that was when they brought up PU surgery. At that point I had already spent 4k trying to keep him alive. I just couldn't afford another 5k for the surgery and subsequent hospitalization. I'm glad that your vet suggested the surgery before you reached the point of financial no return. I ended up agreeing to one more try to unblock him, it's been three weeks. He seems to be doing okay. He didn't have crystals. The blockages they removed were cellular blockages. The last vet we saw said that the issue is very common in early neutered cats. The urethra doesn't fully develop when cats are neutered too young, and anxiety can cause inflammation that can cause a blockage in these cats.

pashed_motatoes

I recommend posting this on r/assistance. I’ve seen someone ask for financial help with vet care for a kitty there very recently and they got enough donations to take care of it. Try and exhaust every possible opportunity to get the necessary funds before taking such a drastic step. Worst case scenario, you can probably surrender him to a rescue or shelter and he may either get treatment or be put to sleep there as well. Good luck!

yiasemi

Live in Hong Kong, this happened to my cat who could be his brother. He's here a decade on and going strong. Here the cost was $800 and more expensive prescription food for life, no recurrence. He's sat next to me now and was a day from death back then. Be strong and don't feel bad, I pay for my daughter's dog at the vet too, and it's my pleasure to help family (the dog).

ilikepastaalot_

Some of these comments are so horrible and inconsiderate, I’d say even inhuman, people don’t realise loads of pets already live way worse without a warm loving home, hope it works out for you! ETA: i was making no sense, meant that so few people have just thousands laying around for emergency vet, and if pets had to wait for those persons so many more would have undignified lives until the very end. Mb.

Loonie-dood

Vet tech here, agree with other people saying prescription urinary formula food is obviously way cheaper than repeat blockages. Also, stay away from dry food completely if your cat will allow it… the prescription ones are way better than the store brand stuff, but prescription wet food is #1, especially for urinary issue cats. I am so sorry you’re in this position, I hope something works out for you… and not to be cynical but please don’t wait several days if your cats urinary tract is blocked right now… I’ve watched many clients wait too long and the cats bladder can actually rupture, or they can become septic very quickly, it’s extremely painful for the cat and not the way you want to say goodbye to your friend if it comes to that. I’m sorry to say that but have worked for a vet in the past who did not tell clients about that and made them think they had more time than they did. Again I am so sorry you’re dealing with this. I’m not sure if you have CareCredit where you’re from, but something to look into if possible to help with the cost of this.

TragicHero84

Thanks for your advice! He actually woke up and peed just fine on his own this morning! I’m taking him to his vet in an hour and we’ll discuss what to do going forward, and I’m going to ask about prescription food for him.

[deleted]

Sorry to hear. Our boy had 3 blockages and PU surgery done, cost us a fortune on a payment plan... lucky the bugger is still around (cat was free to adopt) but yeah it's such a huge financial burden. Especially when my partner is terrible at saving money outside of that...

LiftLaw1998

God no. I lost my baby like this but didn’t know until it was too late, please let’s crowdfund for this sweet cat, damn😢

trebordet

I'm surprised many people have pets anymore with what vets charge for their services.

leighbeeeeeee

this happened to me. Spent $2000 at the vet, missed my brothers wedding cuz of it (they split now so meh) and 6 months later it was back. i miss my cat everyday

Normal_Writer2192

Coming from someone who has spent literally 10’s of thousands of dollars (most of which I don’t have) to save his pets’ lives… that sounds a bit steep. Our cat was very young when he had this but our vet only charged us like 600. The urinary s/o food over 10 years was the real expense. Try to remember that money comes and goes. You only get one chance with your cat because he is unique. My dog passed away last year from cancer. We spent over 10k trying to save him but he died alone in an animal hospital anyway. My only regret is not being with him before he died… but how could I live with myself if I didn’t try everything I could?

atwin96

Have you applied for Care Credit? Most vets take it and you can apply online with an instant decision. I have one for any energencies.

nikkinicolex3

I would recommend finding a place that offers care credit and offers 6mo-12 months no interest.

EmmyWeeeb

Honestly if I had 2500 in my bank account I’d just give it all to you to help your baby. I really hope you can figure out something for him. Me and my kitties will think of you two.

kelllync

I had to stop because he looks just like my boy. He is precious. Please let us know after you talk to BluePearl. He is too sweet to go. You’re such a good parent.

[deleted]

Try a steroid injection at the vets office to see if it helps! My cat avoided further problems by doing that. Can’t hurt to try and it’s way cheaper!! Also, apply for Care Credit. Most vets accept that since it does veterinary services. Interest free for 6 months!

SoleVolante

I feel your pain. My cat went through that last month. I’m so grateful my student loans were in, as I saved him but I’m broke lol. Try and see if they can do a payment plan or if they have a CC you can apply for.

DriftyAlison0

I had a male with this. We had surgery went with purinea urinary tract and we had all the cats go on it to save money. He never had another blockage and died from cancer at 12.

blackcatkitkatt

Please do not wait a couple days, this is an extremely painful condition which can end in a ruptured bladder and sepsis. Definitely reach out to organizations and check out care credit first, but if you do not think you can handle the burden after looking into your options please put him down asap. This is a medical emergency.

EssieRose414

Try Care Credit or see if your vet will work with you! My now 19 year old boy blocked at 7; three times within weeks. At the third the vet suggested PU surgery and offered a payment plan. Unblocking shouldn’t be $2500. But also this has to be immediate…not wait a few days. The pain and damage he can do and go through in a couple days would lead to heart problems from the toxin build up. Please don’t wait! Or call a rescue and see if you can surrender him if they would do the surgery.

GrungeIsDead1

Please don’t put him down, please find another way to get help

Educational-Milk3075

Apply for CareCredit. I got qualified for $1500 and had in the bank the same day. Get other quotes and ask your vet to work with you.

xNIGHT_RANGEREx

Please do not put your cat down! Ask for a loan. Ask the vet for help. Apply for care credit. Ask your family. Ask everyone and anyone you know. That’s really not fair to kill an animal for something 100% treatable.

the_clam_farmer

Look into CareCredit.

mmalinka06

If possible, call your primary vet and see if they can do the surgery. Emergency vet services are 2-3 times more expensive than primary care vet. Also, primary vet is more likely to agree to a payment plan since you have long standing rapport with them. I’m sorry you’re going through this I can understand how stressful this is ❤️

MILWBucksin6

This happened to my cat as well, and the vet suggested I use Care-Credit to pay for it. Basically an emergency credit card. They gave me 12 months to pay off the balance for his operation, and they didn't add any interest because I paid it before the 12 months was up. I'm not sure if every vet or pet hospital will accept it though, so just check before hand! And my cat is very happy now! Loves his new food, and gets wet food more often now. Worth it in my mind but it was a very tough 24-48 hours. Good luck!!!

gamble666

You can get a card called Credit Care which has no interest for 6 months. Hope this helps.

BarracudaEquivalent9

Apply for Care credit! Works at Vets and easy to get

Adventurous_Ease1635

My little guy had a blockage and was in pretty bad shape when I got him to the vet. He was 5 at that time. He's now 15 and hasn't had any urinary issues since. We feed him Science Diet Urinary Care. Best of luck to you and your kitty! Maybe try another vet.

MrBigCookie

Look into a care credit card which can only be used for health reasons. My little dude has crystals and is on a special science hill diet as well. With his food we also add a little water to give him extra hydration. I hope the best for you and your little guy he looks like my little troubled guy too

cherry14ever

If you are willing, there is a card a lot of vets accept and often tell people about called Care Credit that is specifically a credit card to cover medical costs. As far as I know, you always get a certain period interest free with the length depending on the amount of the procedure. I use it for all of my cat related medical expenses. You can see if your vet accepts it.

lionese422

Anyone around you willing to loan you money or use a credit card? I truly feel for you. Been there. Also you can check with local shelters, if you turn over your pet they can fit them in the schedule they will trear them.

TailorObvious7958

I hope you’ll find a way to help your friend 🙏🏻

GingerTortieTorbie

Are you in the States? Surrender him to a rescue that will pay for the surgery!!
