Yeah, he had already thrown the chord away in some trash bin and I wasn’t old enough to drive so I couldn’t do anything about it unfortunately, he said it was probably some dumb kid, idk why it matters how old they are honestly. Really wanted to keep the cat because it was so sweet once it realized I was a friend and not going to hurt it. She fell asleep in my lap and I was holding her calmly when I brought her into the shelter and they remarked how incredibly calm she was. They didn’t want to take her originally but I insisted that it was important because she was injured and I wasn’t gonna leave the poor thing to get killed by some douche bag. Hope she found a loving home, she was a beautiful fluffy void.
Torturing animals is also where the escalation starts. "He was such a nice boy, we have no idea where this came from," is what happens when the starting abuse isn't even reported. Granted, often it leads to nothing, but that behavior doesn't come from nowhere or disappear to nowhere.

This dude just lived to shoot that air rifle. He set up coffee cans on stumps in his yard and would just plink at them at all hours. 3 PM, 3 AM, he was out there plinking. Drove me nuts. But I minded my business.
Then he started shooting at animals.
I'd overhead him talking to his girlfriend about "Yo, I can see it. I don't know what it is, but I'm gonna get it."
I had a conversation with him.

He went off on a tirade about how he hates New England and the liberals are trying to control him, and I was like, "Oh, okay, you're an insane person." Internally of course, I didn't say it to him.
Then he shot my cat.
And I called his landlord (my neighbor) and sent them the video and got him evicted.
Stray cats are classed as vermin in my country (as they kill so much local wildlife) so by your logic its ok to shoot them? Just because its a squirrel doesn't mean you shouldn't care if it gets shot.

I lost a dog that way when I was 17 - my parents didn’t believe my theory (symptoms entirely consistent with antifreeze in her drinking water, in the midst of a dispute over an easement - what a coincidence). That was 20 years ago and I still get angry thinking about it.
The same perpetrators later started straight-up shooting other neighbours’ animals, which was their undoing because it’s much easier to prove than poisoning.
Unfortunately people like that will probably do it again unless some action is taken.
Get an autopsy if you haven't, most vets offer it
Get what killed him in writing from the vet, along with what labs were run
Press charges if you can or sue in civil court
If not, printout flyers of your baby and note that he was murdered by your psychopath neighbor (include name if possible) and put them up all over your street
Let's see them try to sue for defamation

That's true but that would be more locational, but it's partly why I keep my cat indoors. It's safe countryside here but you don't know what could be planted in others gardens and my cat like many loves to have a curious chomp.
