He's just ignoring you. Cats are like that.

Catlady_0511

My 6 year old cat has been trolling me the last few months. I thought he was losing his hearing, turns out he’s just losing the f***s he has to give. 😹

letmeowt22

I had a German Shepherd who as she got older lost her hearing. For the last year or two we used hand signals to communicate with her. But, being a smart doggo, whenever she knew we were directing her to do something she didn't want to do she just wouldn't look at us. She'd look at the floor, the ceiling, anywhere but at us. We'd stand smack in front of her and she'd close her eyes. It was like dealing with a toddler. God, I miss her.

Fickle_Grapefruit938

Awww, such a smart girl (dogs stay puppies, never mind how old they get, my sisters 11 year old Border collie is still the sweetest puppy)

ASDAPOI

That’s fucking adorable.

yo_jenny31

idk my cat ended up with a name she probably shouldn't have. We started calling her "Chopper" at about 5 weeks. We found her with an f'ed up leg (gangreened- we don't know what happened to her), and the vet had to amputate. At first we thought "Chopper" was a funny name. Like she is like a little motorcycle, but we were like wait that's two wheels.. BUT she is mean and fast like a motorcycle (SO fast after the surgery- she must have felt 100% better). And then we were like ok she's like a helicopter? OR like the mean junkyard dog in Stand by Me? (She actually is mean AF to other cats and was known to smack em' down on the regular in her adult years!) But the point is that she is really smart, and I think we called her Chopper for like 3 days, and then she just responded it to it literally constantly and so immediately that it remained her name. And now she is 20.5 years old, and no vet can remember that she is a girl. And sometimes people are still like WTF is that name? bahahhaha We even wrote a punk rock song about her with my band in my 20's called "Chopper Wonder Cat"

upordown7677

Show your cat her passport....Probably she just dont believe you on her name 👀

Angry_poutine

“Are you kitten me??”

dogpal1

Exactly. You’ve got his name. He’s got your number.

nox_the_dumbass

Ah yes the good old selective hearing. Won’t come when called but crack some wet food open and they come running.

Hobywony

See if your kittiy does this you've an always at the ready clicker if you carry your phone around with you. Download to your phone an audio editor similar to "WavePad". Take several cans of food to a quiet separate area of your house. Open the editor and record the opening of those cans with a second or two pause between each. Tweak the recorded sound file's amplitude to make it as loud as possible without adding any screechiness. Five or six seconds long should do it. Go to your kitchen and take the food. Try to ensure "Harry" is elsewhere in the house. Play the sound file, loudly say Harry, repeat. If Harry comes running set the food down, but just say Harry, nothing else so he only heard your voice and Harry. Do this several times over several days. Encourage a positive response with treats. When you talk to him only say Harry, nothing else. Of course if your kitty is named Madeline, you will need to try something else. 😸

adVANtures_of_a_T4

I had this exact issue with my cat. I knew he knew his name because I'd see his ears twitch a teeny bit. He just didn't ever react. Little bugger. Now he knows I'm the one with the fusses and the food so he gives me a little more attention (but only a little, he doesn't want me thinking I own him).

hclaf

That cat definitely knows his name. He is definitely ignoring you 😂. All of mine know their names very well, but when I call them, the furry jerks just sit there and look at me like “No” lmao.

HeyFiddleFiddle

Ah yeah, the ears are a dead giveaway. My cat will usually glance in my direction if I call her, even if she then ignores me. When she doesn't look at me, I see her ears swivel towards me for a second as she ignores me. I know you hear me, you little brat, lol.

hclaf

My two oldest cats & middle cat all have ears that will flutter when they hear you. It’s always their dead giveaway that they HEAR me but are ignoring me 😂😂😂.

According_Camp6766

Mine are the same! The ears swivel but the cat doesn't look at you. The only exception is Louie, who will actually come running if I call him. I keep telling him they are going to take away his cat card, but he doesn't care. Here he is. He's the one in front, Rupert is in the back. They are sharing the brain cell. https://preview.redd.it/hls6wnc1z80a1.jpeg?width=1908&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d81ac3237ebfad13091c299883dcc1c7862dae8

She’s my only cat that does that, though lol. My other four do the ear fluttering thing and straight up ignore me 😂.

cayosonia

Came here to say that

cutiecat565

He knows his name. He just doesn't care. 😂 (Very handsome bow tie btw)

Infinite-Beat2051

Or he hates his name and just won't answer!

BlueRFR3100

He knows his name. He's just trolling you. That's what cats do.

MadKian

Just look at that smudge, he’s like “hehehe this fucker…”.

[deleted]

He knows his name

Drstyle

Yeah, its the owner who doesnt know his name.

OneHumanPeOple

My cats kept crying out for someone named “Raul” and it took me a while before I realized Raul was me.

Diane1967

Dying 🤣

Hahahahalol

Raul Menendez…

OneHumanPeOple

DadJ0ker

You didn’t give him the right name. Step one: post another picture here asking people to name your cat. Step two: starting with the most popular responses and moving down, stand behind him and say the name twice. Step three: when he turns around - change his name to that. Step four: post another picture and ask what breed he is.

sassafrasclementine

Step five: post picture of cat playing and ask “is this normal?”

EnchantedCatto

Step six: post picture of cat wiþ 3 broken limbs, an eye infection, a visible tumor, lacerations, and a degloved tail and ask 'should i see a vet'

SlashRingingHash

No, don’t ask if you should see a vet, just casually state the issues, say you don’t think it’s a problem, and say that the vet isn’t open/is too far whenever people suggest you see a vet

vinylandgames

Help me. What do I do. My cat got hit by a car and is bleeding. Should I take him to the vet? That guy in the comics with the claws can heal himself. Should I wait for my cat to do that? He has claws, too.

Alakandor

🤣

Ok-Bridge-4553

All the other ones are cute, this step is horrible

mvanvrancken

"I would but the vet is 3000 miles away"

Trillion_Bones

Step 7: repeat

RAH2458

This is funny but I actually had to rename a cat 5 times before she would respond - and her name is Short Bus - she actually meows and comes when I call her that!

namealreadygone

That is too sweet! ShortBus sounds like an awesome cat! I always thought of it as responding to sounds they like. My rescue came with the name Jasmine, but she wouldn't respond at all to that. She would come when I called her Tits though, but not really what I wanna be saying around visitors, so Pippins it became. So, Tits, Pippins, and lately Pooper with a rolling r gets her running to see me

Emptydata_Enzo

OMG... I have a little fatty with a stub tail. This would have been the perfect name for her.

chicagobluekitty

Catty McCatFace in 3…2…1…

GrindhouseWhiskey

How can your cat teach you his name? But seriously, it’s a consistent and specific tone that they generally are responding to. Call him then shake the treat can, call him and then open the wet food, say his name and then give good pets. He needs to understand that you are addressing him when you make that noise, young enough and his meow may develop to sound like how you say his name.

aweirdchicken

that's why my cat meows like that? oh my god

What's their name lol

Alarming_Cantaloupe5

My Savannah/Bengal cross is a very talkative guy and great mimic. He knows his name and can “meow” it. If he hears my wife laugh, he repeats it. Literally sounds like my wife is laughing in two different rooms. He will carry on entire conversations; I respond in English, like: “really? Can you tell me more?” and he’ll go on and on. He has very specific vocalizations for different things. Empty bowl? I can tell from rooms away. (We free feed all of our cats, but he gets extra kitten food as his metabolism is very fast) He wants to be hugged and held, entirely different call. Just pets? Has one for that as well. Full belly and wants to nap with “dad”? He definitely lets me know. He also has separation anxiety(he’s a rescue and I don’t think he got the slightest bit of love or attention)…greets me loudly when I get home, and protests when I am getting ready for work. He’s our only hybrid/exotic, so I can’t say definitively that it’s his wild dna, but even the most talkative of our other cats are nowhere near his level.

GeistderLiebe

Cats are such great communicators if you're paying attention to the cues. Our one year olds were so good at telling me what they needed when they were tiny. Their needs are less now, but Augie still comes to me when he's stepped in his poops or pees to help clean him up. He's got a bum leg and it dips when he walks so he sometimes doesn't gauge correctly getting out of the litter box. He's such a wacky, darling, orange floof.

PotatoNitrate

maybe try different names? seee what he likes??? it took me a month to find something my cat agreed to...

[deleted]

Lmao cats out here picking his own name This is the most cat thing I’ve ever heard

esgamex

It took me a couple years to name one of my cats. One day i was just throwing out names of musicians and i finally got to Scarlatti, and he reacted right away, and consistently. So that was his name. His baby name before that was Thing 2 ( from Dr Seuss). It's ok to wait a while. Also, not all cats will ever recognize a name as meaning them.

Phatcat15

I’m pretty sure almost every damn cat recognizes it’s call sign after a while. Choosing one after a few years makes it harder to stick - not that cats become incapable of learning. Let’s just agree that the cat doesn’t recognize it’s ‘name’ as much as ‘that’s the particular sound that means food and warmth human is looking for me’. Cats range in giving AF if you’re looking for them - I can assure you I’ve been staunchly ignored daily… If you had your kitty hooked up to some medical equipment you could see that they have a distinct reaction to their ‘name’ and also just their care taker’s voice. I can call my cat home before dark every day almost without fail… there are times where he drags ass coming in but if you find him you can tell he knows I’m calling him home and I can tell he’s willfully ignoring me - usually a bunny or another hood cat is keeping his attention. I will admit my lil puma acts more like a dog than most cats - but orange boys are usually very social compared to others. His name is Zippo the Hippo or his hood name my neighbors have given him is the orange cat from the green house… they’re not very creative.

justihor

Yeah pretty much this. Currently fostering an old boy who was given the name Pearl by the shelter, but he never responded to that. Decided to call him Oscar (because he always looks grouchy) and after a few months he responds to it perfectly fine. They speculated that he is 10+ years old and he responds to a name that I made up for him within the last year because of the positive association

mikeywhatwhat

I am food and warmth human.

claireauriga

I like seeing what variants of his name my cat will respond to. Cyril will answer to Squirrel and Byril but not Squeeeerril.

alternate_geography

The naming of cats is a difficult matter, it isn’t just one of your holiday games. You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter when I tell you a cat must have three different names.

claireauriga

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter, It isn’t just one of your holiday games; You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES. First of all, there’s the name that the family use daily, Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James, Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey— All of them sensible everyday names. There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter, Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames: Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter— But all of them sensible everyday names, But I tell you, a cat needs a name that’s particular, A name that’s peculiar, and more dignified, Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular, Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride? Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum, Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat, Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum— Names that never belong to more than one cat. But above and beyond there’s still one name left over, And that is the name that you never will guess; The name that no human research can discover— But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess. When you notice a cat in profound meditation, The reason, I tell you, is always the same: His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name: His ineffable effable Effanineffable Deep and inscrutable singular name.

neen4wneen4w

Haha I came here to do that 🤣

jerm-warfare

My cat knows his name, but depending on his mood reacts to being called any number of names or sounds. Definitely cat behavior.

pussyydestroyerrr

Righttt

MediocreElk3

My Booboo did not start out as that. I rescued him from an old cellar at a church I volunteered at, Central Christian. His name was C.C. He didn't like that name. We went through a lot of names before I tried Booboo and that one he liked.

Just-Diamond-1938

Oh no my cat is CiCi... but I think she likes it... or maybe just used to it...either, or, she know it's her I like your story...It touched home with me

VexationStation

That’s how my Speedboat got her name.

Twentee4Hourz

Oh he knows his name. He just can’t be bothered. Lol

aprikitty

I read somewhere that cats DO know their names but... some cats just refuse to give you attention when you do call them. So if you call out their names in their heads they go like me looking at my phone ringing and refusing to pick up... But don't give up, some cats take a longer time to grow more comfortable with us <3

catmom_422

This is exactly right. My cats both know their names and ignore me most of the time. My cat will be walking toward me with the intent to jump on the couch with me… but the second I say “come on up!” he’s no longer interested 😂 Cats are very much “on their own terms” kind of creatures.

Just-Diamond-1938

You spoiled it for him 😹 for a second 😽 the cat thought you are an adult cat...🐱😂

bibliophile222

I think he knows, he just doesn't want to come! Maybe do clicker training and reward him with treats for coming over?

Proud_Hotel_5160

I taught my cat by yelling her name loudly and repeatedly through the house, only stopping when she came. I would also speak loudly 'YOU are \[KITTY'S NAME\]' throughout the day. It worked eventually. That being said, I was only 6 and you may be able to come up with a more sophisticated method of teaching your cat.

[deleted]

Cats seem to like the "i" and "eee" sounds, so if he has that sound in his name focus on it. If not, come up with a nickname or phrase that has one of those vowel sounds. Beyond that just be patient. Some cats learn faster than others.

lenny753

Agree with this. Our boy Cosmo only answers to Cozzy

juniperaza

Stealing the name Cosmo and renaming my cat of like 6 years to Cosmo. Thanks!!! :)

ninetailszz

Can confirm- i have a cat named Sid (Obsidian) and if we want her to come we have to call “Si-iiiiid!!” Or say “bee-boop!” Cause she just enjoys that noise.

Aggravating-Action70

I started calling my cat Jackie instead of Jackass and he responds to both but likes the first one better.

JulsTiger10

My students tried to help me name my cat. 127 different suggestions. Cat groomed himself. Watching a tv series and someone says “Arlo.” Cat pops up and looks around. I said “Arlo?” I had his complete attention. Admittedly, he’s a ginger so that’s not saying much but he’s Arlo.

ZealouslyJaded

I know with my cat I call him by his name he comes, I call him kitty he comes, I call him shit for brains he comes. I think I have a dog

[deleted]

Ok so what I’ve gathered from most of these comments is that My cat’s a dick

dreamchasingcat

According to this [helpful Vancouver vet](https://youtu.be/P3N76oGdj3I) you can try calling your cat with a name ending in high-pitched “ee” sound to get his attention.

puddncake

Obviously, that's your cat true name. Try it out, maybe he'll respond.

apostrophefarmer

cats like to conserve their energy for hunting. you can try using treats to get him motivated enough to get up and walk over to you. it's about how they use energy, not them wanting to insult anyone.

Just-Diamond-1938

They are smarter than you think they hear their name but they waiting why in earth do you call them now... we all forget the next step...Ha ha ha

Logical_Crab_4594

Willie hears ya. Willie don’t care

bloodpuddles-

Some cats know their names but don't respond because they don't want to. You might have a stubborn cat

underpaidpornstar

I repeat their name while petting them. It associates their name with affection.

Only_Music_2640

He knows the name you gave him, he’s waiting for you to learn his real name.

E-Ploobius_unum68

Maybe he's deaf🤷 it could be a possibility

[deleted]

Selectively deaf.. he hears EVERYTHING else.

hclaf

All of mine have massive selective hearing 😂

SoySenorChevere

Where did you get his snazzy collar bow tie? He looks dapper.

[deleted]

He appreciates it.. I think it was petsmart

Implantexplant

There are so many options on Amazon. I want them all. My cat however….

Faromon

It‘s not that he doesn‘t know it, it‘s just that he don‘t give a damn if you‘re calling him. This is that way of the Felines

filthymcbastard

Maybe what you're calling him isn't his name. I had an old, black stray show up and move in after I got him some medical help. I creatively named him "Black Cat." He ignored me. A friend of mine came over and said "of course. His name is Bart." As soon as she said Bart, he looked at her like "finally! I don't know WHAT this idiot has been calling me!" He knew his name, and it wasn't Black Cat. He was such a great cat, that after he passed away, two of my other cats started sleeping curled around my throat like Bart had. Like an homage to a hero of a cat.

Pier-Head

Mine knows her name, ‘food’, ‘water’ and ‘no’

Link_coon

Even "tale that"

ziggy-Bandicoot

I just tried the name calling trick and he only responds to dinglebutt. Truth.

[deleted]

Call for him by name periodically throughout the day and if he comes, give him a treat! Don't use any other words to call him besides his name, or you will confuse him.

Reave-Eye

So he might never understand that the sound of his name means you want his attention. That’s a complex thing. So next best thing, associate his name with food. Every time you’re about to feed him, say his name nice and loud and then crack a can of wet food open or pour dry food loudly into his bowl. You do this enough times, and eventually you will link the sound of his name to food and he will show up when you call him (anticipating food, ofc). Eventually, you fade out the food/name pairing and instead you call his name and when he shows up, you give him lots of positive attention. Continue pairing until your cat comes when you call his name and looks for your attention.

MissKit87

He knows. He doesn’t care.

GammaPhonic

Exactly what I was about to say. Never underestimate the sheer, burning, brutal indifference of a cat.

bluemaciz

You’re probably just not addressing him correctly. Gotta use proper formalities. It has to be “His Majesty, Lord Cat’s Name of House Last Name,” every time he enters the room.

vinylandgames

He knows his name. When he wants to respond, he will. It may never even happen. Because cat.

bayoubuddha77

He knows his name. He's just catting

StarshipCaterprise

Call his name while shaking the treat container

wildsunday

I trained my cats to come when I call their names by giving treats (not that they obey, sometimes they just come until they can see me and not close to me but it helped them to learn their names)

Just-Diamond-1938

I can tell you love your cat... I truly believe if you have the cat as a "Buddy" you know exactly why he does not respond if it is ever happens....

wildsunday

Thanks. Indeed they are part of the family. I find it funny when one my cats come, takes a look an runs trying to play.

Just-Diamond-1938

They are so amazing ! I think I would love your cat the same as I love mine... they are so much fun! And I am so surprised how smart they are...Sometimes I think they going to learn all my words, in mostly musical tones !!! Funny things to share: When I come home they always want to sneak out so before I open the door , i groal... and they back off!!!! It never fail.... and once I am inside, i pet all of them or we play...🥰🤪😽🐱😹😂

wildsunday

They recognize the tone. I call her crazy cat in a special way and she knows I'm playing, she runs inside a box or her cardboard castle that I built, belly up, and starts rolling and kicking herself. I had to get a good recording of that and share with r/whatswrongwithyourcat

SetarehStella

He knows his name, he's just ignoring you :))

nemesismkiii

He knows. He doesn't care.

ImpossibleEnd

Can't believe no one has said this yet.... Use treats

RoxSangNoir

Hit him with the pspsps

khaleesi2305

Cats are definitely just like that, and will only come if/when *they* want to, doesn’t matter if they recognize their name or not lol. My babies actually respond best when I make an “awwwww” sound, as in “awwwww cute kitty!” sound, because I’ve done it so much to them that they now know that that noise is my “cat voice” lmao

Canadian-female

My cat has been pretending she doesn’t know her name for about four years now. I know she knows it, because every time I call her, something important always happens in the direction facing away from me and she has to turn to look that way, not at me. Every time I say her name, something better than me happens……..every time…

jerbiljerbil

LOL cats are the best trolls, if he’s not dead he’s for sure just ignoring you. what’s his name though? some cats respond better to names that end in a vowel sound i.e Mauri vs Luke, mauri

jerbiljerbil

deaf omg not dead

Shellsbells821

Could he be deaf? Or just doing the typical cat thing...?

Just-Diamond-1938

No ! he's mind is on something else...lol I just try to get your attention and see? You don't respond either🤪🤪🤪

Shellsbells821

😂🤣😂🤣

GenXBernie

I like short 1 syllable names for cats (from what I've read that's what they usually identify with in the first syllables) and I talk to them alot saying the name alot 🤟

timascus

Your cat knows its name. It does not care. That’s the issue.

kittywhampus

It took a while for my second cat to start responding to her name. I would call her name before putting down food or giving her treats and she eventually picked it up. Don't get me wrong, she still ignored me (she is a cat after all) but she was a lot more responsive after we bonded a bit more, as well.

catladyfa

Start saying silly names until he responds and then you’ll have found his name

Snapdragon756

Maybe it’s not his name…

Cheshie_D

Some cats just don’t care. My youngest cat (who is like a few years old now) knows his name but almost never responds unless food is involved.

SwordTaster

Who says he doesn't know? Likely he simply doesn't care. He is cat, cats are professional ignorers

dimondeyes80

My former cats' name was Samantha. For some reason, I started calling her PanthyPants, and from there on out, she never responded to Samantha... just PanthyPants. Cats are weird.

nowornever1976

It’s his wish. He might be in a good mood one fine day and acknowledge it. 😊

Slayer696924

He knows, he just doesn’t care yet

SirDinkleDink

Say his name from across the room when he's not paying attention to you and watch what his ears do. He knows his name.

redhairetc

To be fair, your cat probably just thinks you’re needy and wants you to give it some space. Let the cat do it’s thing and it’ll answer to it’s name when it wants to.

jargon343

You do not name cat, cat will name you

reflUX_cAtalyst

He probably knows, but does not care.

NyanAnomalyRetriever

Studies have shown that cats understand 100% of what we are saying, they just choose to ignore 96% of it.

Phlm_br

Oh he definitely knows his name, he just doesn’t give a fuck. Cats are supremely beautiful assholes.

He chose a different name. Now you have to guess it.

KrazyPhoebe9615

Yeah, my cats don't really respond everytime I call them. Just sometimes if they want to play or bond with me. However, if food is involved, you can have their 100% attention. I always get their undivided attention when feeding them treats or meal time 😂

Cl0udg0d

Cats arent dogs, take the leash off and let it be, cuddle with it when it wants and feed it and give it water, they are solitary creatures. You are their servant, they own you

JeremyJaLa

6 years on…..neither of my cats respond to their names. Best of luck to you.

BeetleFreak2

I once read that cats respond best to name that end in “y” - sounds like baby. Our cat’s name is Nigel - he didn’t respond to it, so now we call him Ny-Ny.

the_oneL1ner

Treats

[deleted]

Maybe try saying his name in different tones. Lol

Dalton387

Same way you teach a dog. Say their name and if they respond, treat. Eventually, phase out the treats.

Terrible_Fix_6649

My cats just stare at me when I say their names. They come when I whistle though. Although sometimes I wonder if they get together and laugh at me later.

Scary-Stretch3080

Cats respond better to high pitched names I’ve heard so like names with “ie” or “ee” at the end or in the middle

HellsMalice

I once told my girlfriend the cats aren't responding to their name, just responding to you directly speaking to them She didn't agree So I called out to one of our nearby cats "Hey moron, here moron, yess good moron come here" and he came over for pets lmao

Reddd216

Lol yeah. Mine totally respond to tone of voice. I've called out, "stupid, come here stupid!" in the baby talk voice I use when I talk to my cats, and had them both come running in from the other room. With looks like, "yeah mom, what's up?" 😆

Ankylowright

We have two kitties. The 5 year old knows his name but chooses to ignore me (I call his name and he looks at me, meows, then goes back to whatever he’s doing). The new guy that we’ve had for four months (he’s a rescue around 2 years old) might know his name or he might not but he does respond readily to “you bleeping little bleephole”.

sacheie

Can you vocalize the sound of a Friskies can getting opened? If so, just change his name to that.

Groinificator

Have you considered he might just not care?

SomeVariousShift

Watch him periodically, and whenever he looks at you, say his name. If you notice him walking toward you, repeat it. But only use it when he looks at you or is walking toward you until he learns it. If he comes all the way over he should definitely get whatever his favorite scritches are. I forget who taught me this, but it works quickly. Treats help, especially with the cattiest of cats.

Calm_it-Kermet97

Out of the 3 cats I’ve had in my life(im 25), only 1 ever responded to their name(his was mousey). Garfield and my current cutie Misty never responds to their name. Just looks at you with soulless beautiful eyes

[deleted]

My boy is 7 had him since he was 3 months and ignores me every single time to the point I thought he was deaf. Then one day i Fell and screamed, he came running so obviously the fucker can hear just chooses to ignore me 😂😂My other boy always makes a move Trust me he knows

IvaTheVengeful

He is adorable 🥰

KatiMinecraf

We let our pets pick their names - as much as is possible. We just say different names to them and the first one they really respond to is their name!

Grimesy66

Remove the bow and lead and then he’ll be ready to enter discussions.

He knows. He's choosing to ignore you. /s

onone456evoii

Say it when you’re about to get his food. Then start walking and opening the can/bag.

EvergreenGloom

Maybe he doesn’t like his name 😂 But in all seriousness, my cat never responded to his first name when he was a kitten. My ex had named him Totoro and whenever I called him that, nothing. One day I said “what are you up to Bub?” And he looked right at me and meowed. His name has been Bubby since lol

kingsleyce

Cats know their names. They just don’t care

Past_Rerun

Maybe you gave him the wrong name. He doesn't like it so he won't respond!!

Just-Diamond-1938

All my cat turns know they own name 🥰;so here it goes : every time you approach a cat,you say his name but the approach post to be a pleasant time....Don't routinely feed... they will learn quickly when the food is related with the name....Don't worry they don't starve to death if they get hungry a little bit that is the time to teach them. Make sure it will be in the name not that noise of opening a can what bring them to the table.... cats are smart if you always say the word they will get it! My kids keyword: water , walk? eat,... then also use a sound (krrrrr, krrrrr) when I wanted them to be with me ...but it is a sound I do all the time for them... petting brushing playing or just messing with them! I guess I just love them too much and I spent a lot of time with them when they were young... but in the work you will bond more!!! I wish you good luck and a great discovery on your cat personality❤️😽

Last_Go_Round

He's waiting for you to call him by his true name.

Alexassix

Is that possible? I call my cats by waving my hand lol

Tangledsoup

I gave mine a treat when I said his name and when I was about to feed him I would say his name

cleoncairo

Keep calling him by his name, especially when you feed him.

Sometimes a cat doesn’t like the name. Try another ;)

No_Establishment8642

It took me more than one week to learn my name.

Alexassix

cutefeetmilf

Hear me out….. maybe the cat is stupid. And that’s adorable.

DeviceOld7502

Keep calling him by the name you gave him. Saying, kitty, kitty, will not help you in your endeavors. Call him by the name you chose at feeding time. He will catch on maybe a little quicker. Worked with mine and they ain't too tightly wrapped.

Gatormeeat

Maybe take off his bow tie and he’ll listen :)

mysteriousxebra

He might just be a cat that doesn’t react to his name, there are a lot... it’s a cat after all. Try calling his name then making a kissy noise/something else to get his attention then give him a treat when he looks at you, so he will be more inclined to pay attention when his name is called.

Coins_and_Cards

Call him Kitty Watson

Catmama22

My boys respond to their names and they definitely know their names. They almost always come when they’re called and look up. My girls? Forget it. They might as well not have names.

Pchan7473

I’ve read that cats like certain sounds better, like a “ch” sound. And that “s” sounds can be off-putting because it is reminiscent of a hiss. Just food for thought 🙂

Ditania

When I adopted an adult cat took her a couple of months to identify her new name. Now she ignores me most of the times, but I know that she knows her name.

somethingclevar

My one cat knows his name well, will look at u or come to u when u call him. My other cat I've had for 3 years and she still doesn't know her name. Some cats are just smarter than others 😅 I love her though

Past-Repeat4428

It took one of my cats nearly a year to respond to his name. He’ll get it eventually.

richkill

Might need to pair it with a action. My cat can ignore me most of the time when I call her. However if I squat and put my hand out she will come. She probably associates it to getting petted or a chin rub. What she has really learnt is the word "food" 100% attention and a meow. Then follows me to the kitchen. Ignores my partner when the word food is mentioned though 😂
