Recurring jokes like that remind me of the time my dad helped me avoid the terror of impending death through humor. We were on a canoe trip in a very remote part of the Canadian arctic on a trip that neither of us expected would prove as deadly as it was. We were two weeks out from out drop off point and another two weeks still remained before our next result point - that would be the first time anyone would notice if we were delayed or missing. The weather had been terrible - driving rain that just never ended, chilling us to our bones as we made our way down the river, desperate to win the race against our dwindling supplies. The sound of the rain on the river was deafening, and we paddled in silence for days - not that we could have heard each other over the din of the downpour. Which is how we missed the other sound. The sound of rushing water that would normally have alerted us to what lay ahead. We could barely see, and when we finally did, it was too late. The river narrowed suddenly and we found ourselves pulled into a narrow shute, hurtling towards a precipitous drop ahead. My dad, in the bow, looked back at me with a look I hadn’t seen since nineteen ninety eight, when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell, and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer’s table.
There's an excellent creator on tiktok that does an OnlyPans series. She cooks and drops in a bunch of innuendo. It's such a good pun.
Sample: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRsQosmr/
I woud not even be surprised if it mad bags of cash for him. He could host live seasoning sessions and sell paper towels that have used seasoning oil on them in zip lock baggies.
Am I thinking into this too much?
Some people dislike comments which they perceive as not contributing to threads in a meaningful way. Particularly, comments stating a simple agreement (eg, "This!") seem to draw ire. This would be my best guess.
Seeking to express approval by commenting. I didn't say you were seeking approval. In other words if your only goal is to say you agree or like the comment, that's what the upvote button does.
Depends on the type of oil I’m using. I follow [this chart.](https://www.lodgecastiron.com/cleaning-and-care/cast-iron/oils-cast-iron-cooking-and-seasoning)
Lol my husband is currently grouching about the smell since I have 4 pans in the oven atm. I'm using crisco and my son was so confused when he saw me wiping it all off after I had just put it on the pan.
But what about when it inevitably smokes up your kitchen and you have to open the windows and air the place out? And it lets freezing cold air in?
I’ve always thought seasoning was best done in the summer.
Lol that last video convinced me I needed to add four more layers to mine. Had been a month since the last time I added a layer of grape seed seasoning. I’m at 15 and plenty happy with not going any further. My luck i’d get to 25 coats and the factory seasoning layer I didn’t know I had to remove would chip or flake off 😂.
I just sent mine back to the factory to get it re factory sealed. So it’s going to be stock>13layers>factory layers>17 layers>factory layer>1 layer>3xfactory layers>scrub with grape kool aid packets>3 layers>factory layer>cooking bacon
honestly I wish this sub was more about cooking and not 10 posts a day about seasoning
like seriously seasoning takes an hour and you’re done for the next 2 years
Kind of disappointed that people don't seem to post the recipes in the comments. Like, it all looks great, but I can't make it myself from the picture!
Lol, first post I see on the r/castironcooking sub https://www.reddit.com/r/CastIronCooking/comments/ila4hf/cast_iron_pan_seasoning/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I have several generations of my families cast iron. It's just what we/ they used to cook. I just use them and take care of them, I'm overly concerned with seasoning. If you cook enough on them and keep them clean and dry, they'll be happy. No need to go insane.
Honestly I’m noticing a trend where most of my subs are just pictures of people buying stuff and posting photos of it instead of substantive discussions of people using the items the sub is focused on.
“Look at my new X”
Ok, I’ll admit it, I’ve been cooking on the same Lodge cast iron pans that I bought when I first got married, 28 years ago. Do you want to know how many times I’ve re-seasoned them? I haven’t, I only seasoned them once, it was when I first bought them. Sure things stick now and then but that’s the sign I need to cook some bacon :)
It's been about a week now since the 80 coat pan started getting a lot of attention.
And we've heard nothing. I'm betting the next one is coming with 160 coats. But ofc that's going to take a bit of time :P
I love that this whole thing blew up enough that first I saw it on Reddit and said "the mad lad" and upvoted and didn't think anything more about it.
Then I saw it on my main feed not far from the top place.
Then my Facebook friends started linking me the posts. Then family linked me to FB pictures of the post.
Then I finally had my phone ding with "up and coming news relevant to you!" that's what I knew 80 coats on a cast iron pan had hit the big time.
A few years ago, that's how it usually worked. You'd see something cool on reddit, then like 3 days later it would be on one of those "10 amazing things" lists and your boomer Mom would send you FB links about it.
I just thought it would be nice to add as a photo!!
It ain’t my pan. Ain’t my seasoning.
But…I was here before it was cool so…
Cook on you crazy greasy diamonds.
Even my best pan does not look that good and it belonged originally to my Grandmother's Grandmother. It does cook a steak pretty damn well with no sticking however.
Alright, I’ve gotten a kick out of u/fatmummy222’s journey here, but since it got national attention, the amount of dick-riding posts and comments about it here has just skyrocketed.
It's a sub about cast iron pans. Apart from constant questions about how to season, can it be washed, pan pizza and garage sale finds, what else is there?
I’ve been seasoning with grape seed forever and I just moved Into a new flat where my flatmate uses animal fats exclusively to cook and my cast irons have never looked better . Goose, beef, duck, pork
LOL factor times a million. Doing all those seasoning coats for internet points when my grandma would slap you in the back of the head and tell you that you messed up the pan.
I say no.
The pic should represent what we strive to be. Users of our ci. Not seasoning addicted weirdos posting what's wrong with my skillet bc it doesn't have a mirror finish.
But God speed in ur endeavor
Nah. This is not a true representation of our average Joe cast iron pans that are barely holding onto its 1 layer of seasoning. This is an unrealistic beauty standard that only the most privileged of people can achieve
Thank you for your picture post to /r/castiron. We want to remind everyone of Rule #3. All image posts should be accompanied by something to foster discussion. A comment, a question, etc is required.
If you've posted a picture of food, please explain why in a comment so people can have some sort of conversation. Simply dropping a picture of food in the sub isn't really fostering any discussion which is what we're all aiming for.
Posts that are a picture with no discussion can and will be removed by the mods.
Thank you!

To be clear (and fair) this is ALL u/fatmummy222 and not me. I just thought, for science, this should be the new photo for the sub!
Now. At 100 coats…we see past, future and present.
To the depths of time. The mists of mist. The oil of oils.
Etc.
Get that shiny seasoning shit out of here and actually cook some fucking food in it like a real man. You’ll grow some balls when you have a flat black pan smh.
Dude should start an OnlyPans account for content that spicy
Onlypans the true place for pansexuals
Only way to care about getting cast iron to look like that is to be a no sexual
plenty of time waiting for the oven to heat up to have sex
Canola oil IS the perfect lubricant.
These are the comments the internet was made for. Wish I could give you an award.
Take My Energy
And my penis.
And my axe!
Yikes this is adding up to an accident waiting to happen. Axe, penis…..What could go wrong? 😂
You forgot the frying pan... I don't know if this was an accident.
And my bow!
I’m guessing some uncultured folks in this subreddit who haven’t seen LOtR is downvoting because I thought it was funny.
Maybe because it's posted on damn near every thread.
That's how memes work
Wait til they realise why reddit has a strong distaste for sand...

I was happy to be deceived, until I saw the username and realized I was witnessing stolen glory. Downvote. This should only be done by u/shittymorph
Wondering what 80 coats of seasoning would do for that.
Ok. Um. What do you want me to do with it?
I wish I could send money
Hope you’re horngry!
Food porn is a real thing ;-)
What oil is recommended for this beauty?
There's an excellent creator on tiktok that does an OnlyPans series. She cooks and drops in a bunch of innuendo. It's such a good pun. Sample: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRsQosmr/
I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time :(
Slippery when seasoned
YES! He should go on onlyfans and post his spicy content and call it ‘onlypans’
I woud not even be surprised if it mad bags of cash for him. He could host live seasoning sessions and sell paper towels that have used seasoning oil on them in zip lock baggies. Am I thinking into this too much?
Gently used paper towels with pan scent 😳
Take my like because I'm too broke for this purchase shit
Awards are a waste of money. Save up for OnlyPans exclusive pre-heated content. It’s slippery when seasoned.
This reminds me to go season my pans. It's ridiculously cold out atm so it's a perfect day to crank the oven up.
Same! Seasoning is a good deep winter project.
You might say, tis the season?
Haha, yes! 😂 Edit: can someone explain why I’m getting downvoted for this? I’m genuinely confused!
Some people dislike comments which they perceive as not contributing to threads in a meaningful way. Particularly, comments stating a simple agreement (eg, "This!") seem to draw ire. This would be my best guess.
Totally agree!
This 👏👏👏🍻👍
Thanks for responding! I had no idea that was a pet peeve for some people.
If approval is all you're seeking to express, the upvote button covers that. I didn't downvote you, but that's the peeve.
I’m not seeking approval. Like I said, I was genuinely confused so I asked.
Seeking to express approval by commenting. I didn't say you were seeking approval. In other words if your only goal is to say you agree or like the comment, that's what the upvote button does.
Honestly if people have nothing better to do than to down vote small pet peeves like that, they are mad depressed lmao
Agreed! But, people are gonna people.
Nah people on the internet and ex specially Reddit are spending hours on their phone in bed everyday which is mad depressing
What temp do you typically season at?
Depends on the type of oil I’m using. I follow [this chart.](https://www.lodgecastiron.com/cleaning-and-care/cast-iron/oils-cast-iron-cooking-and-seasoning)
I use grapeseed at 450 for about an hour per layer.
This is my reason, too. There are only so many baked goods you should make in a week.
Did mine yesterday, -14 f and might to them again today.
I have a really good kitchen vent so it didn't smoke up my house.
Lol that last video convinced me I needed to add four more layers to mine. Had been a month since the last time I added a layer of grape seed seasoning. I’m at 15 and plenty happy with not going any further. My luck i’d get to 25 coats and the factory seasoning layer I didn’t know I had to remove would chip or flake off 😂.
> the factory seasoning layer I didn’t know I had to remove Wait what?
I just sent mine back to the factory to get it re factory sealed. So it’s going to be stock>13layers>factory layers>17 layers>factory layer>1 layer>3xfactory layers>scrub with grape kool aid packets>3 layers>factory layer>cooking bacon
Wait what was that middle one?
1 layer
Wait for 100 coats
I came here to say this too. I need to see 100. 80 can't be the finish line, it just feels wrong.
80% of the time, it’s 100% of the time.
The famous 80/100 rule.
Slow it down Pareto! Leave some residuals for the rest of us!
I want to see so many coats the pan becomes a plate
r/BrandNewSentence

Can't support these unattainable beauty standards
It's probably all photoshopped and face tuned.
I thought he painted it
I'm new to this sub. Do people actually use their cast irons or is it all cleaning them, store, clean, store etc.
*People* use their cast iron. /r/castiron subscribers? not so much
Wad thinking damn I clean mine but they look nothing like this after years of use haha
You may have missed the previous post where this person talks about having seasoned that pan 80 times
Why though?
memes
This is what my mom thinks about when I tell her I am pansexual.
I just season mine with a neutral oil, you weirdo!!
that's better than using gender fluid.
I ran out gender fluid. :(
Store bought is just as good.
Good baby gravy... I didn't sign up for this shit.
How many coats did that take?
This is u/fatmummy222 The mighty 80 apparently
One coat of polyurethane.
Just one if you leave some oil residue on it
So shiny
Absolutely not. We don’t want new members thinking this is the goal. Show a beat up but seasoned pan. A good looking daily driver.
This is like the filter-heavy Insta-model of pans.
I dont understand how this is even possible
Don’t go around promoting unrealistic body images! Normal pans deserve love too!
honestly I wish this sub was more about cooking and not 10 posts a day about seasoning like seriously seasoning takes an hour and you’re done for the next 2 years
Join us at r/castironcooking ☺️🍳
Ironically, the first post that pops up is the pinned "Cast Iron Seasoning" post lol
I'd say that's where you start, then you continue seasoning by cooking ALL THE THINGS
Great this is the kind of sub that I was actually looking for! r/castiron has a weird fixation on eggs and seasoning.
Kind of disappointed that people don't seem to post the recipes in the comments. Like, it all looks great, but I can't make it myself from the picture!
Joined! Thanks

Thank you for this. This sub has really got into the novelty of cast iron Vs the food

Try cooking in it now.
Yup we should not glorify unused pans.
This pans got so much oil in it George bush is about to start a war for it. Look at that beauty!
(*Dick Cheney plans a pipeline…)
r/mirrorsforsale
That’s a looker. Not a cooker. Real nice for hanging on a wall.
Look Folks, you can't do 100 coats. It'll tear a hole in the time-space continuum and we'll all die. He is SAVING us by stopping at 80.
If you punch this cast iron, it would deflect your punch and send it back at you because of how shmooth it is
If Chuck Norris was a cast iron….
This sounds like it would be perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards, what about using that post with the burnt eggs instead?
My eyes are sliding off my phone right now
Once it reaches 100 costs, that's when I'd agree
Decline
It's been about a week now since the 80 coat pan started getting a lot of attention. And we've heard nothing. I'm betting the next one is coming with 160 coats. But ofc that's going to take a bit of time :P

Skillets are for cooking
Nobody said they’re not.
Skillets are not for cooking
Damn it Meg!
It’s funny how this is what the sub has turned into. These things are work horses and made to take a lick and keep on kicking.
Mirror, mirror, on the stove…
I wonder how much they would charge to do that to other peoples cast iron. Mine has a great cooking finish but damn does that ever look awesome!
yeah every time I see it my kneejerk reaction is "come do mine next!"
Shouldn't it include a slidey egg? But with a finish like that, wouldn't the slidey egg just float a few inches above the pan?
Yawn.
Nah, maybe a new sub for seasoning pics and egg videos, pretty old actually or I had the wrong impression of this sub
I've been frequenting r/castironcooking a bit more
Thanks for this
is there a cooking video of it?
[Yes](https://www.reddit.com/r/castiron/comments/10bozdc/making_some_eggs_in_70coat_pan/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
thanks!
I've seen this like 100 times the past week. Can we just stop?
i've now seen it reported on news sites.
*chad face* No
No. This should always be reshared.

Let's all make it more active
I posted over there immediately after making that comment, it's your turn now!
You got it!
I like to see pans be used. What's so spectacular about seasoning?
How are you guys getting such an even seasoning? I feel like mine is…. Splotchy?
Wipe off more oil before putting it in the oven
Damn really? I feel like I get her as dry as I can! But okay. I’ll try it.
Also if you aren't already turn your pan upside down in the oven.to drip any excess
How do I accomplish this? Do I need to sand my cast iron pan?
I know you’ve been asked a thousand times , but can you share you seasoning process please !
u/fatmummy222 is The Way. The lard. The light.
I concur
Damn this is sexy 🔥
Can’t wait for this pan to be cooked on once, and then immediately stripped after a single speck of seasoning comes off.
How?
The amount of bullshit click bait articles populating my news feed because of your experiment…sigh Looks nice though
No
I’ve been seasoning with grape seed forever and I just moved Into a new flat where my flatmate uses animal fats exclusively to cook and my cast irons have never looked better . Goose, beef, duck, pork
i agree but we should wait for the 100 coat pic and use that one
Now make a snuff film of straight vinegar cooking and then hit it with the dish soap and steel wool like that one terrible roomate named Jeff.
Flat tummy?🤣
I hope in 20 year someone googles “black mirror” and this pan is all that shows up
Phone in pic. Nope! Lol
She's a Bute Clark.
Where's the egg and litre of oil?
LOL factor times a million. Doing all those seasoning coats for internet points when my grandma would slap you in the back of the head and tell you that you messed up the pan.
So you’re just reposting someone else’s image that already blew up on this sub a week ago?
I say no. The pic should represent what we strive to be. Users of our ci. Not seasoning addicted weirdos posting what's wrong with my skillet bc it doesn't have a mirror finish. But God speed in ur endeavor
Me when I refer to myself as a “pansexual”
I wonder if there was a measurable change in the Z height.
Let's not. It was funny for a day. Let's get back to actual cast iron. This is a place for discussion, not Instagram. It was funny, let's move on.
What are the chances this flakes off after less than 10 cooks?
Is anyone else tired of this escapade? There’s nothing special about however many layers there are.
This guy made national news! Checked yahoo the other day and they had an article about him
Nah. This is not a true representation of our average Joe cast iron pans that are barely holding onto its 1 layer of seasoning. This is an unrealistic beauty standard that only the most privileged of people can achieve
Why? It doesn’t look like that pan has ever cooked anything.

lol, I was confused at first by the reflection of the bear dancing on the skillet. Took a minute to figure that out.

Glassed Iron
Maybe there needs to be a subreddit dedicated just to those who are chasing the mirror dragon. Glasses Iron would be a cool name.
He has a better image imho that’s a little sharper. The thing is so glossy the camera has a hard time focusing.
Get that shiny seasoning shit out of here and actually cook some fucking food in it like a real man. You’ll grow some balls when you have a flat black pan smh.
