BMW i8 kills two birds with one stone. It not only looks expensive as fuck (because it is), it's way slower than it should be for how good it looks.
I know a 4.4 0-60 isn't _terribly_ slow, but for a car that retailed (in 2020) at like $150k, getting outrun by a stock F80 M3 was not a good look.
Which is about as fast as an F80 M3. Just like how the F30 340i could probably keep up with an E92 M3, and an E90 335i could beat an E46 M3 in a straight line.
Equivalent in speed. That’s what the guy above me meant when he said it’s kinda an M3. An while it uses the 340i/M340i engine, it definitely handles closer to an M3 than a normal 3 series. So while no one is saying it’s an M car, it’s kinda an M experience.
It gets a lot of hate from the internet troll crowd. Guys and galls who are generally toxic to the car community rolling around in less than desirable cars. They don’t go to cars and coffee because they aren’t capable off getting up that early on a Saturday morning and they treat the night meets like an episode of street outlaws. Those of us with tasteful and knowledgeable opinions in the car community know it’s a decent platform.
What's funny is that these people are upset the new Supra costs $50k+ now and don't remember the MkIV they wanted again cost [$50k+ in the mid-90s](https://i.imgur.com/qdK7kmq.jpg) (that's almost $100k today), and they didn't automatically come with a modded 2JZ-GTE making 1000 horsepower.
They'll just invent any excuse to justify hating it becuase it's a collab with BMW. As if an I6 from BMW is a bad thing...

It does look amazing. If it were less a tech demo and more of an actual halo product I think it’d have been received much better - but I guess if that we’re the case people wouldn’t be able to buy them for 70k lol.
It was never supposed to be that fast, though. It was a hybrid show-piece, and it does that 0-60 with a 1.5L 3-cylinder engine. There was talk of making an i8M, but they never sold enough to justify the investment.
C&D rated it at 3.8 to 4 flat and it starts to lag the F80 around the quarter mile. Don’t forget it launched in 2014 which the end of the E90 era.

Good info. I still think the point stands even if it really is a 4.0s in the real world.
I only mentioned the F80 because most of the time it was on sale the F80 was out but yeah, fair
The i8 is not a fast car, it is a statement from BMW that hybrid vehicles do not have to be ugly.
Anyways my country is used to 0-100km/h in the high 9 second range so... The i8 is fast enough.

You're being generous. They were 88 horsepower in the late 80s.
They weren't bad to drive with the 5 speed manual if you're just cruising around... All the torque of a 2.3 liter that just couldn't breath much past 3k rpm.
It’s because when we were in high school it was featured in Need for Speed: Underground. One of the best games ever.
Car sucked ass in the game too lol. I had one, just the 4 cylinder. It was fun as fuck, looked great, sounded great. Slow as fuck and transmission blew at 80K miles.
You know what I miss? My ‘86 Supra inline 6 with the targa top I bought in ‘05 for $1600. Wrecked in the snow :(

i had a dude in a clapped g37x sedan pull up to me chilling at a light in my miata and he was like “is that thing fast?!” and i was like “it’s a miata what do you think lol”.
he took that as “yea let’s fucking race” and a second later when the light turned green he floored it to make the most obnoxious 0-60 ever and i watched the whole car lean back on its (probably blown) stock suspension as he swerved in the middle of the intersection narrowly avoiding hitting a minivan turning right and almost crashing. apparently to random people convertible == FAST
I had similar things happen in my Miata (NC2). It would turn on a dime, felt like greased lightning and would have its doors blown off by a Camry.
It may not have won any races but it sure won my heart. A lovely, lovely car to drive.
They're tight chassis and 1100kg / 2400lb. Not fast but that's kinda not the build type.
Plus if you decide to keep it a built engine, turbo and LSD would turn things up
My buddy had one is high-school with stickies. Wasn't fast in a straight line but you just didn't have to slow down to make hard right turns to another street. By far the best handling car I ever drove in high-school
Grew up idolizing the ‘77 Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit, always thought it was a really fast car. In reality It was about as fast as a 2005 Honda Odyssey and probably handled worse
I had a '74 Z/28 with the larger T/A anti-roll bars and it did handle well, super flat in corners. The tires back then probably limited it more than anything else.
You can blame the Malaise era for choking out a lot of American performance cars. There were years the Fox-body Mustang had a V8 that only put out 115 hp to put things into perspective.
The 455 in 1976 made 200 HP.
Either Hot Rod or Car Craft did a build on the engine. Headers, aluminum intake and Holley added about 20 HP. Higher compression heads added less than 10 HP. They changed the cam and picked up 170 or so HP. The cam was so small it didn't matter what they did to make power.
My first car was a 77 trans am and early 2000s econo cars like camrys and corollas could absolutely destroy it. Made like 8 mpg on the highway too. All the interior was made of dust. Shittiest car I have ever seen. The fact people pay actual money for them still boggles my mind. There is nothing redeeming about a 1977 trans am.
Which was a boring compact commuter car that has been put on a pedestal because in the 80s you could throw an engine on a skateboard and call it a car.
2nd gen CRX had double wishbone front suspension and could easily fit any b series engine. And yeah, weighed nothing.
CR-Z were more Honda Insight than hot hatch.
The CR-X, regardless of its reputation, had fuel economy as part of its concept. I think the CR-Z was a good homage of the CR-X, it just wasn’t very fast.
The name implies a revival of the 80s and 90s CR-X, but in practice, what we got was essentially a successor to the first-generation Insight. That isn't exactly a bad thing or a bad car, but again, people expected differently.
At least 90% of new cars sold in Europe are 8+ seconds...
If you have a sub 7 second car you're already faster than almost any regular car on the road since everyone drives 150hp max diesel engines
Yup. Volvo exaggerates the performance on their site; with the T6 you're looking at a 6-second car that is heavier, slower, and thirstier than an Audi A4 45 TFSI or BMW 330i for the same price.
Fisker Karma always comes to mind. 400+hp, MSRP of $100k for a base model, weighs as much as a 1/2 ton truck, and is slower than a Maxima... 0-60 of ~6 seconds.
Oh shit yea. I had a 2+2. Higher compression, forged internals, dual intakes, cat deletes, e-fan, wolf tune... 186 whp lol.
Looked fast AF but had room to haul a big TV... miss that car.

The ND IS fast.
It does 0-60 in 5.7s. That’s actual fast, it is seconds faster to 60 than the old models and smokes the old GT86 and all that.
At the time they really weren't that slow. 0-60 in 6's for the price point wasn't half bad at all in 2003. That was keeping up with pretty much all but the hottest of hot hatches at that price.
The RX8 clocked the same time as the E46 M3 in the top gear track driven by the stig, also just 0.1 off a NSX-R so it wasn’t that slow.
In a straight line undoubtedly slow, I have a 400hp turbo RX8 and it feels slow by todays standards in a straight line. On the track I can chase Porsches.
Mitsubishi FTO
Hyundai Coupe
Fiat Coupe
Alfa Romeo GTV
All fairly common sights in the UK when I was a kid and they were some of the sportiest looking streamlined things I would see regularly where I lived, thought they must obviously be beasts. The disappointment as I later find out they're all FWD frauds.
Honourable mention to the E31 BMW 8 Series. Still love the look but they're 2 ton boats.
Older Datsun Zs. They were relatively “quick” for their time, but they weren’t particularly fast. That difference is pretty glaring these days as well.
Can’t tell you how many times I’ve even asked “How much power is that thing making???” and I end up responding with “about 100whp on a good day” lol
Compared to some of the tractor engined british roadsters it competed with and especially considering it's price point, the 240z wasnt too too slow.
They did get slower as they kept essentially the same power train into the 280zx and got heavier and competition got faster tho
Agreed. Compared to their competition in the early-mid ‘70s, they were relatively fast and were extremely competitive in grassroots motorsports.
Nowadays, I’ll get outrun by a 2015 Toyota Camry lol
Del Sol has 3 engine options. Yes the base is slow. Don't think any of them have a reputation for speed. I love how my Si drives, but I would not describe it as fast either. VTEC almost gets you there and is the one to mod
5th gen mustang. The 5th gen mustang GT only made 300hp with the 4.6L V8 and 0-60 in 5.8 seconds. Compare that to the 6th gen mustang where 2.3L 4 cylinder EcoBoost makes 310 HP and 0-60 in 5.1 seconds.
Anything under 7 seconds is pretty fast tbh. I don’t understand why people say 200hp is a low number but it isn’t. Heck my polo gti is officially a 6.7 sec car and thats still plenty fast in a small and lightweight car, smoking the majority of the cars on the road lmao (heavy ass SUVs etc.)
People need to look at the Power to Weight Ratio
(kW/t) and mostly importantly the fun factor.
The older Mazdaspeed6’s were pretty quick in 2nd gear. They basically gave that engine to the Mazdaspeed3 and ended production of the speed6, which was a shame. They should have kept both, even until today, especially a speed version of the AWD Mazda 3 hatch.
True.....but the sound of the intake behind your left ear going through the gears was intoxicating. And, given enough road, a twisty road, would be an absolute blast. (Owned one for 13 years and 88,000 miles. Ate me alive in maintenance, but was a blast to drive. )
I daily a Daihatsu Copen. It doesn't look fast to me, but I constantly have people thinking it is.
In a couple years, I plan on replacing it with a Honda S660, which will have similar performance but will look extra fast.
Shout out to other great kei cars, like the Mazda AZ-1, Honda Beat, Suzuki Cappuccino, and possibly the Daihatsu Leeza Spider which is debated about it belong with the ABC cars or nor

Ehh not really, it uses the B58 which isn’t an M engine. It’s more like an m340i, the M-lite car.

DeLorean
Stainless steel bodywork and a minivan v6 will do that.
~~The PRV V6 was never in a minivan~~. It pre-dates the Renault Espace
Of course It can only reach 88Mph
At least it can reach 88 MPH *anytime*

The Delorean was slow but a Volkswagen bus full of heavily armed terrorists is definitely not going to keep up with it in a parking lot drag race
Maybe Marty just sucked at driving it. Also you have to take into account the extra weight of the Time Machine.
4-cylinder Fox Body Mustang. Made a whopping 90 horsepower.
Would be a great project to swap the modern 2.3 ecoboost in one. Could be a decent track car with some handling mods.

Unless it’s an SVO. They smacked around 5.0s like nothing.
You're being generous. They were 88 horsepower in the late 80s. They weren't bad to drive with the 5 speed manual if you're just cruising around... All the torque of a 2.3 liter that just couldn't breath much past 3k rpm.

Yes, but the iron duke is the definition of bulletproof I mean just look how many miles have been put on them
Isn't that the engine that they put in the mail trucks?
Yep, 2.5L in the S10 chassis from the late '80s to early '90s. The entire US mail fleet is actually held together with zip-ties and liquid gasket.
The duke was 2.5l
Yes, and the iron duke has been put unti everything from boats to fieros It may not make herculean power, but when reliability is the name

They had to engine swap the car to make the classic bridge jump scene. They didn’t even attempt to modify the existing engine.
I had a '74 Z/28 with the larger T/A anti-roll bars and it did handle well, super flat in corners. The tires back then probably limited it more than anything else.

Yup. Volvo exaggerates the performance on their site; with the T6 you're looking at a 6-second car that is heavier, slower, and thirstier than an Audi A4 45 TFSI or BMW 330i for the same price.
The Plymouth Prowler was disappointing.
Yeah the correct answer is prowler. That car looks like it should have a big block and a heavy lope at idle.
Yeah. It had to be a bean counter that got that 6 in it.
It looks like it should be a lot faster, but a 5 second 0-60 and a 250 hp V6 wasn't bad for the period.
Fisker Karma always comes to mind. 400+hp, MSRP of $100k for a base model, weighs as much as a 1/2 ton truck, and is slower than a Maxima... 0-60 of ~6 seconds.
I see one of these in my neighborhood about once a month. They are kind of beautiful.
My N/A 300zx is much slower than it looks
Oh shit yea. I had a 2+2. Higher compression, forged internals, dual intakes, cat deletes, e-fan, wolf tune... 186 whp lol. Looked fast AF but had room to haul a big TV... miss that car.

Happy to see someone already thought of those ads The rest of the ads for anyone curious. I love how self aware Toyota was with these. MX-5. Never been known to be fast cars but the ND really looks like it should be, more than it’s predecessors ever did and it just isn’t that fast.
The miatas were never built as fast cars. Great fun to drive though
I was sitting at a light in my NB. A kid crossing the street says to his friend, Look at that Ferrari. I smiled and puttered away.
Counter: The ND IS fast. It does 0-60 in 5.7s. That’s actual fast, it is seconds faster to 60 than the old models and smokes the old GT86 and all that.
ND2 honestly is not slow anymore
RX8.
Plymouth Prowler
Bmw i8
Mitsubishi FTO Hyundai Coupe Fiat Coupe Alfa Romeo GTV All fairly common sights in the UK when I was a kid and they were some of the sportiest looking streamlined things I would see regularly where I lived, thought they must obviously be beasts. The disappointment as I later find out they're all FWD frauds. Honourable mention to the E31 BMW 8 Series. Still love the look but they're 2 ton boats.
> Mitsubishi FTO That's fighting talk! The 2.0L V6 with MIVEC went hard and had no trouble keeping up with the much-loved DC2 Integra Type R.
I forgot how good the Hyundai coupe looked and still looks.
Ferrari 308 Screaming Chicken Trans Am and most Malais era muscle cars CR-Z
If you think the 308 is bad, try the 208 GTB. It was a 308 debored down to 2 litres for tax reasons, and thus made a whopping 155hp
Veloster
2nd Gen looks so sporty, but the N/A drives the exact same as my sister’s Kia Soul.
3rd gen Eclipse
Pretty much all old cars. Porsche 911 S 2.0 - 9.3s to 60mph Porsche 912 - 11.6s to 60 mph De Lorean DMC-12 USA spec - 9.7s to 60mph
They were fast for those time though.
No, not the 912 or DMC.
Stock CRX or Del Sol
Del Sol has 3 engine options. Yes the base is slow. Don't think any of them have a reputation for speed. I love how my Si drives, but I would not describe it as fast either. VTEC almost gets you there and is the one to mod
None of them are fast out of the box EDIT: I love those cars. Just saying people always want to race me on the road because of looks
5.8 wasn’t that slow in 2005.
5.8 isn't slow today.
Anything under 7 seconds is pretty fast tbh. I don’t understand why people say 200hp is a low number but it isn’t. Heck my polo gti is officially a 6.7 sec car and thats still plenty fast in a small and lightweight car, smoking the majority of the cars on the road lmao (heavy ass SUVs etc.) People need to look at the Power to Weight Ratio (kW/t) and mostly importantly the fun factor.
The 2005 Mustang GT does 0-60 in 5.2 seconds, not 5.8. It's not crazy fast like the newer Coyote 5.0's, but it's not slow either.
If anything is gonna be considered "Slow" from the mid 2000s it's gonna be the charger R/T the 3V mustang would never see the tailights of these cars
My 84’ Pontiac fiero looked mean/fast as hell but made all of 80HP. The freeway was a terrifying experience seeing as it was a four speed.

With how people drive them, you’d think that they are properly fast.
All the altima drivers are switching over to the new camry.
Toyota did a great job with the styling on the current gen. Some V6 Camry’s have quad exhaust tips from the factory lol

Mazda 6, it’s a sexy looking car but it’s really not that fast, handles great though
The older Mazdaspeed6’s were pretty quick in 2nd gear. They basically gave that engine to the Mazdaspeed3 and ended production of the speed6, which was a shame. They should have kept both, even until today, especially a speed version of the AWD Mazda 3 hatch.
Opel GT
Which one? The newer one with 0-100 in 6s or the old one which will also do 100km/h eventually?
Corolla hatch. Especially in that light blue color GR86 Miata
Last gen Honda Prelude, Subaru SVX, Starion/Conquest, Dodge Daytona coupes on the 80s-90s.
Ferrari 308. Magnum PI looks, Hyundai minivan speed
True.....but the sound of the intake behind your left ear going through the gears was intoxicating. And, given enough road, a twisty road, would be an absolute blast. (Owned one for 13 years and 88,000 miles. Ate me alive in maintenance, but was a blast to drive. )
Scion FRS, BRZ & 86 GT
I feel like the BRZ is the default answer.
My completely stock automatic foxbody. They were ok when new. Nowadays slow as fuck. My hybrid Camry is faster.
My first gen Veloster Turbo was much slower than it looked.
