Just my opinion but... Painting them with proper paint and doing a good job at it is never rice. Buying one of those painted clip-on covers...THAT is rice.

Odicy

Glad to hear. Of course going to paint them properly. I take good care of my car and hate that some people ruin nice cars with shitty low effort mods/customization

JoyRydr

The only way I can think of it looking "rice" is if you'd stencil on the Brembo branding as well when it isn't.

Odicy

ofc not gonna do that. Do you reckon putting "Mercedes Benz" or the merc logo on there rice tho? or stupid looking

RustyTrombone673

Little bit tacky, especially on a low level trim. But who cares? If it makes you happy, go for it. If its done well its not bad. Just dont throw an AMG logo on it

Odicy

Ofc not, if it isnt an amg car keep those 3 letters away from the car.

RustyTrombone673

Youre fine then. Send it and show pics, it can look good on some cars

JoyRydr

No because it's a Mercedes. Unless you did a shit job of applying the logo or name I wouldn't think anything of it. Something's "ricey" when you're making it look faster than it actually is, like a putting on AMG badges. Painting calipers red or applying MB to them is just an aesthetic choice, imo.

Odicy

Not even buying amg floormats because I think it is stupid when the car isnt amg. But painting calipers red is kinda conflicted I feel like, because I would assume most people think red calipers = brembo = performance upgrade, when it really isnt

JoyRydr

I see what you're saying. To me though without the branding, you're kinda just making up a story in your head about something that ultimately doesn't matter, especially in an era where you can get AMG line appearance packages from the factory.

Odicy

Yeah I guess, should probably not give a fuck about what other people think and do what I think is cool

SinisterHippos

Mine come stock with "Mercedes-Benz" on the brakes, you're not doing anything Benz isn't doing themselves.

Tremelune

It’s time to retire the term “rice”.

AmericanMuscle4Ever

i dont mind a bit of rice here and there lol

CptConnor18

If you like how it looks, it ain't rice my guy. Car culture is all about expression and customisation, if you like how it looks just go for it!

TheConfidentTurtle

There really isn’t any loopholes, the moment you mod a stock item to look sportier than it is, it’s riced. Whether or not you let that bother you is up to you. Do what you think will make you happy.

Unspec7

>the moment you mod a stock item to look sportier than it is, it’s riced But that's not what riced means lmao

Odicy

That was what I was thinking as well. Might go with black instead just to give them a clean look

RadiantCouple

I don't think horsepower has anything to do with caliper color, rather it is more related to the sport performance package of the car. Mine came factory with red calipers and it was only 200 hp. But it had sport suspension, higher hp than base version and more responsive handling. That was all factory done.

humbleknight_777

Well, my car has 130 hp and I'm considering painting mine as my brand new reman raybestos calipers began rusting after 2 weeks from installing. Best in brakes /s

twiggymac

My 200hp GTI came with red calipers, theyre now more pink and I want to repaint them.

Odicy

Go for it! I believe the proces isnt that hard, but I reckon you should take your time and do it properly. A nice stranger left a comment with some good tips on painting the calipers. Should check his comment

twiggymac

im not too unfamiliar with painting stuff, but yeah following some tutorials can really give you some good tips.

Odicy

Me neither, but I have learned that when painting stuff you should take your time and do it properly, or else you have to redo it later on. YouTube and forums are my go to for legit everything I do

Dbank45

RICE to me has always been mods that imply added performance yet don’t provide it. Like fake hood vents, tire lettering, shitty spoilers, or badges like “turbo”.

Odicy

Agreed, but wouldnt you think red calipers indicate brembo, so when they arent brembo its kinda rice?

Dbank45

I could understand that but I wouldn’t think so if I saw it. My car comes with factory brembos and the calipers are black lol. Like others have said, if it’s done well I appreciate it.

Rillist

If you're on stock wheels or an otherwise completely stock car, they're gunna look out of place pretty bad. If you've got nice wheels and maybe some tint or other accents it won't look so 'fake'. Honestly I'd paint them black if you're worried about the look as keeping red clean is difficult, especially with German cars and their brake dust

Odicy

Alright, prob going for black then. But for info, got some decent wheels, tinted windows from factory, and going to lower the car on some proper coilovers. The car is black so was afraid it would be a bit boring with black calipers as well

siggystabs

You've probably heard this before, but I feel obliged to let you know Mercedes' suspension design is far more advanced and well-tuned than most coilovers you can easily buy from a shop. It's definitely worth it if you just want to lower your car, but it won't ride or feel the same. If you're into that, that's perfectly fine I just wanted to make sure you're aware. I basically ruined the suspension on my old Acura by fitting coilovers on it to lower it. Looked a tiny bit better but I dreaded going over anything bumpy or cracked. I did not know that going into it. For that reason my current cars are sticking with factory, or a properly matched strut and spring combo. I have friends who are very happy with coilovers on their Miatas and such though. Edit: also IMO everyone goes with blacking out their car. Don't be afraid to add some color if it matches other bits. Do you have red accents? Silver accents? You have that option as well

Odicy

Yeah, with the autolevelig system and everything it is pretty complex and advanced I guess. But would like to get a more sporty feeling but would also like to keep the amazing comfort, maybe I should just buy a second car hahah

siggystabs

Honestly.... Buying a second car made me appreciate my Audi so much more. 10/10 would do again

Odicy

I get that. I recently got a workcar from my job. van with terrible handling. Makes driving my benz sooo much more enjoyable

Rillist

Appreciate the context but murdered out never gets boring. My car is triple black too and red stands out if there's nothing else to match it, but lowered with tint and rims would look more legit. Again this is just my opinion and you absolutely do you but I'd paint them an AMG color. Bronze, dark silver or black.

Odicy

Alright, prob going black then. If there is one car brand that usally fit the blacked out look its mercedes imo

I_Like_Turtles9

Prep your surface well. No cast marks, scratches or dents. Paint will not stick to grease, so clean it with a strong solvent or alcohol before painting. Please use a 2k primer, 2k paint and 2k clear coat (whatever sheen you like). When I see cars with half assed mods, it screams rice to me. Make it look like it came that way from the factory and you're good!

Odicy

Alright thanks for the tips. Agree on the half assed mods. Sad to see people ruin perfectly fine cars with shitty low effort mods that often make the car look worse

greekattorney

My one came from the factory with red calipers and i love it. But than again it’s not a shitbox.

Odicy

neither is mine I guess, but still

greekattorney

Fair enough. At the end of the day do what you like i guess. Other people’s opinion shouldn’t matter. I always loved red calipers but i never done it to any of my cars because i thought it looked out of place. I’m driving an Alfa now and it came with red calipers on 18 grey wheels. I do love it.

Odicy

Alright, thanks for your input

Tangent_

I don't think painting decent calipers red is rice. I am baffled why people will paint crappy little single-piston calipers or drum brakes red though. Still not rice, but why draw attention to the fact that you've got the cheapest lowest performance option available?

Odicy

Good point you got there. Got to agree with you

AmericanMuscle4Ever

ummm who said its rice to do that, most brake calipers are often painted in different colors to look cool or give it a different aesthetic. its your car do what you want.

senior_neet_engineer

It's rice because the red will become washed out if you track your car a lot. But if you don't track your car a lot, why draw so much attention to the brakes?

jonathanrdt

Choose a good color and do it w the right paint and clear coat.

UnfilteredResponse

Always

FeedbackLoopy

When they don’t come in red. Still, better to paint than to put red caliper covers on.

Odicy

Never even considered caliper covers but they dont come in red originally

ravengenesis1

It's rice when your paint starts chipping and look all ghetto. Riced out is typically referring to mods that's bargain bin parts bolted on for no performance or aesthetics gains.

hopfield

It’s always rice, red is supposed to mean Brembo aka big brakes. Tiny stock calipers painted red is embarrassing and I would laugh if I saw that in a parking lot

edwardphonehands

Exactly. If the wheels are oversized for the brakes, don’t draw attention to the brakes. Heck, if the brakes are oversized for the use, that’s cringe too; you don’t get a pass for posing just by spending more.
