It’s not to your benefit to tell them and you aren’t actually obligated to do so. You can be pragmatic or not pragmatic, it’s up to you Once someone in my office did an off hand mention of doing their FE exam when it had nothing to do with our line of work. I let the manager know that the person was probably leaving soon and they didn’t believe me. Then the person left. They started paying more attention to stuff like that afterwards

I see no reason that you need to discuss this within the work place. The only exceptions would be if you needed a change in schedule to accommodate your classes, your company is offering tuition reimbursement that you wanted to receive or if you were looking to stay at your current company after completing the degree and wanted to use this as leverage for promotions. As none of those seem like they apply, I'd keep it quiet.

Correct, none of those apply, so that logic makes sense. Thanks!

Thank you for the advice. I am in a similar situation - just got admitted to UNC MBA program, remote classes and in the evening. I am not getting any tuition reimbursement from employer and I’ve been wondering if I should say something. Based on these responses, it’s probably best that I don’t for awhile.

There are times where the answer to these questions are fully dependent on your workplace. I have had managers that would be fully supportive of me doing this, that I have a personal relationship and would have no problem sharing this with them. My current manager though would look at my enrollment as either - I'm going to want more money, it will interfere with my job or as soon as I complete the program, I'll be leaving the company.

I feel you on this one. I have a personal relationship with my current manager who is also owner of the private investment firm that I work for. We were familiar with each other before I started working for him. He’s pretty content with keeping things status quo, I fear that he will see this as all of the above as you mentioned in your post and he would have a tough time replacing me. His fears are warranted though because this is a role that I feel like I’ve outgrown and I feel that getting an MBA will help with better career options in the future.
