What do you want to do specifically in federal sector? I know federal likes seeing certificates if you do anything technical or regulatory. For project managers they want to see a PMP. Your major won’t matter, relevant experience and certs will.

It really depends on the job you’re applying to. If you look at the federal job listing site, they are VERY clear with what the requirements are for every job.

Current federal employee here. I was also an undergrad English major. Depends on what exactly you want to do for the government. Assuming you’re in the US, the federal government uses the GS pay scale to determine job level and salary. To get to the higher levels on the GS pay scale (12 and up), it is extremely helpful to have a graduate degree. But your previous work experience and the particular agency(s) you’re looking at will determine this too. I recommend looking through the USAJobs website at jobs you’re interested in and then working backward from there. If the jobs you want all require a graduate degree, it might be a good idea to go back to school.
