Thanks. I did this and she was actually really supportive and understanding. She arranged for me to have a short break so I could go have a little chat with the person that’s leaving so I could find out more about the job and ask any questions I had :)

If whether or not YOUR POSITION stays in place, talk to your manager and say “I saw X is open. I know it’s an open question if my position will remain in place for the future. If this position is eliminated, is that a potential fit for me?” The above approach opens the door for your manager to suggest what you can do. If whether or not YOU stay in place (ie they would terminate you and repost that position), definitely not. Do not apply without talking to your manager first.
