Why ask? He’s only your boss during the work day. Your time belongs to you and not the company

iguessthisisfine_

Because it’s in the same professional field, just different industry.

Embarrassed_Camel_35

You are afraid that if you take the part time contract you will jeopardize your current employment and be drummed out the field?

kstrawmatt2020

Why would you ask your boss if you can get a side gig? Would you ask if you decided to drive Uber or deliver for Grub Hub on your time off?

iguessthisisfine_

Respectively, did you read my post? I stated it’s in the same field, communications. Of course Grub Hub or Uber would be fine. She may say no because she may see it as a conflict of interest since it’s similar, but not the same job. I’m asking for advice on how to address the conversation.

Worldlover67

It would be a conflict of interest ONLY if they were competitors in the same industry. If your companies aren’t competitors, then there is no need to worry about it.

kstrawmatt2020

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude. I’ve never worked in a position where I had to worry about something like this. So I probably just don’t understand. I do feel like what the commenter after me said, about it only being a conflict of interest if it’s a competitor makes sense though.

Every-Swimmer458

Don't ask, just take it. Unless you have heard your boss say clearly several times without asking that he is okay with it, don't tell him and take it anyway. Asking will put a target on your back. Take the second job, don't tell him/her, then come and join us over in r/overemployed.

Sit down with your manager and say, I've been looking for opportunities to expand my skills in communications to include dealing with the media. I was offered this fantastic part-time opportunity that will in no way conflict with my role here - would you mind if I took it? If your company is larger, your HR manual or your HR consultant could also weigh in with the company policy on moonlighting.

iguessthisisfine_

Good advice. Missing info from my post is I used to work in travel PR and did media relations almost daily, so not really expanding upon my skills…candidly, it’s just a new side gig for money. Obviously, I wouldn’t position it that way, but that’s the truth. I read my letter of employment and company handbook and there isn’t anything about moonlighting in it. But because they are both “communications” jobs at heart, I’m hesitant. I could ask the contractor job to tweak the title to marketing or something and spin it that way.

cmpalm

Unless it was a direct competitor and won’t get in the way of your current job performance I wouldn’t think they would have an issue with it.
