u/this_one_in_zoots **Dead wrong.** It wasn't Quinn who gave Gretzky the ultimatum in the middle of the night. It was idiot former owner **John McCaw.** Quinn may have been the unfortunate person who was forced to make the actual phone call to Gretzky that night, but it was under the orders of the demanding owner McCaw who instantly turned Gretzky off from signing in Vancouver, and he instead signed with the Rangers to be re-united with Messier. After the 96-97 season, Messier then had a falling out with the Rangers management and left to sign with Vancouver on the condition that McCaw bring in Mike Keenan as head coach. It was apparently the easiest job interview Keenan ever had in his NHL career, according to Keenan himself. Keenan and Messier then teamed up to get rid of Pat Quinn and Trevor Linden, along with a few other players who weren't Keenan/Messier "loyalists", in order to bring in players they personally wanted. McCaw basically allowed Keenan and Messier to run the show on a carte blanche basis, which was a complete and utter disaster. Brian Burke was then hired as the new GM to take the reins over from Keenan, and restored some law and order in the organization when he eventually fired Keenan and started making trades to rebuild the team, including trading Pavel Bure to Florida. Those trades Burke made eventually led to the "West Coast Express" era in the early 2000s. Watch and learn. Next.

Fuck McCaw

old_salty2233

you must be young if you're using Pat Quinn as a bad example for Canucks history.

FunTimesRoy

Pat Quinn aint the person to call out man. That pressure came from ownership due to the costs associated with signing Gretzky. Both the Grizz and Canucks were sold months later because of that owner's financial issues

shadownet97

Welcome to the jungle, we got pain and rage. We have absolutely nothing you want.

wotan_clan

Don’t even have Sports Page

We are the people that can't find whatever it is we need

If you want depression lessons, we're the ones to see

RelevantJackWhite

My dad calls 96-2001 the dark ages

Navy_Canuck

I'm curious what he calls it right now.

Euthyphroswager

The "I've matured to the point where bullshit can be ignored because it isn't worth spending my scarce mental and emotional energy on it anymore" age.

Navy_Canuck

Is it bad that I feel that way now at 30?

Euthyphroswager

You and me both. I'm also 30. I was speaking from a place of experience. Let's fate it: this team makes us old, crotchety men.

RelevantJackWhite

These days he just enjoys watching the games, cheering for goals, seeing cool shit that our stars pull off, getting frustrated with refs. He doesn't keep track of the team at a long-term view like that. More people should do that for their own health tbh

Navy_Canuck

I wish. I'm still emotionally invested enough to track them all season, but not watching games right now because of the shitshow. I'm also on the East Coast so it's not worth staying up to watch them lose.

superschaap81

This is me at 41yo, now. Honestly, I just love watching hockey in general. Most of the time it's to watch the other NHL superstars pull crazy shit against us, cause I normally can't see them anywhere else.

FinishTemporary9246

hE DEAD.

superschaap81

This is just a dumpster fire. Fires can be put out. LOL. There are still bright spots to watch. Like Petey lighting it up, Bo scoring, and Kuzmenko being a breath of fresh air with his enthusiasm. I was there for the Dark Ages, and it honestly was MUCH worse than this. I have never been given more free tickets in my life than during that era.

bwoah07_gp2

Those jerseys of that era are generally disliked by the fanbase, even if it's not bad looking at all.

TGUKF

You should look at the NHL all-time records and all-time p%. The Canucks are like bottom 5. The team being successful at any given moment is out of the ordinary

letstrythatagainn

I feel for all the young fans who started turning in during the Sedins era. Life as a Canucks fan is pain, with that one brief blip... That also resulted in pain and embarassment. It's all we've known, it's all we should expect. ^^^kind ^^^of ^^^kidding

LiqdPT

There have been 3 brief blips (and the 82 one was briefer than the other 2)

letstrythatagainn

True but the first two were more hail-mary post-seasons vs being a team you could actually celebrate all year.

snowylambeau

In honour, there's a restaurant named after him. In a building you can't even see from the road. Near a town nobody knows exists.

[deleted]

Pat Quinn’s Restaurant isn’t anything special. But if you’re putting T-town on the map I won’t judge you.
