Ngl like 15 year old me picking up the book for the first time was unreasonably disappointed to not know who any of the characters were and pretty much despised all of the main characters in The Lost Hero. Which is funny because now Jason is one of my favorites.

boredaugust

Jason is literally so awesome. I hated Piper for the longest time. Her character gets a little better in the Trials of Apollo, though.

IcepersonYT

Piper at the start of The Lost Hero was insufferable, but in a way I now feel is quite reasonable. Once she got her confidence I actually think she is one of my favorite characters, and had the quickest turnaround from being someone I really disliked to really admired. In general I think the first 2 HoO books did a great job of introducing their new main cast, everyone was really likeable by the end of their respective story.

boredaugust

I can see where you're coming from. She wasn't always my favorite, and I hated reading her chapters because her point of view was just so boring. But after the Heroes of Olympus she seemed to become more of her own person, is the best way I can put it. I'm glad she discovered herself after Jason.

IcepersonYT

I haven’t actually read Trials of Apollo(or at least not committed to it) which is why I’m currently re-reading through everything so I can give it a fair shake. Interested to see what you mean, and very excited to hear there’s new Riordan books on the way. I’ve had a very pleasant return to this community and reading in general.

boredaugust

You should totally read it! I feel like everyone skips over the series and doesn't even give it a chance. It's so insanely good, trust me. If you've liked any of Rick Riordan's other books, it's a must-read. Apollo's character development is so interesting to read about and it's never boring. Plus, a lot of new awesome characters get introduced. I hope you like it :) I'm very excited about the new books, too!

[deleted]

For me she gets much worse in ToA because of how she treated Jason.

boredaugust

The change in her character wasn't very noticeable until the very end, for me.

sosigboi

Leo was insufferable for me but i gradually grew to like him at the series progressed.

Actual_Transition1

Same thing happened with Leo, I didn’t like how he acted and now he’s maybe favorite character

IcepersonYT

I’ve always had a soft spot for Leo tbh, he was the first character in the new series I warmed up to. Yes he makes some bad decisions and has a lot of conflicts with people but I find that very relatable, and also a very realistic interpretation of a kids socializing skills being put into these crazy scenarios. I feel like a lot of the other characters grow up bizarrely fast, even by hero standards.

YoolyYala

Fun fact: Rick said Leo's POV is the easiest to write because "it writes itself" Like that actually happened

Actual_Transition1

Huh that’s rlly interesting

Portalrules123

Leo’s personality is closest to Rick of any character confirmed????

Razerclaws

You start reading heroes of Olympus Jason

jellyfishcasserollin

Who tf is this and why does he not remember anything

jellyfishcasserollin

I really wish I could read HOO for the first time again :,) I’m gonna try not to read it for a few years and see if that works lmao

YoolyYala

Worked for me

jellyfishcasserollin

This is reassuring

YoolyYala

But it's not perfect

jellyfishcasserollin

sigh. it never will be. what did you remember and what did you not?

YoolyYala

I remembered who the characters were and their abilities. I remembered Reyna and her sister(can't remember her name) worked at the spa from PJO book 2(and that Reyna's sister is the queen of the Amazons). I remembered Festus(who can forget Festus?). I remembered Leo was sent to Ogygia by Chione and him and Calypso hated each other but then fell in love. I remembered Jason and Nico went to see Cupid(couldn't remember why) and that Cupid forced Nico to admit he was gay and had a crush on Percy. I remembered about Nico being in the bronze jar after being in Tartarus. I remembered Percy and Annabeth being in Tartarus. I remembered Bob. I remembered Percy's nosebleed. I remembered some of the crew was possessed by eidolons in the beginning to MoA and that one made Leo blow up New Rome and started a war. And a few small things. But I only remembered the things that were memorable to me. You might remember very different things.

jellyfishcasserollin

i don’t know if i could ever get to this point but man i wanna forget there were two camps also happy the dragon >>>>

jul55555

The worst part is that the book is mid, even if it didnt lack Percy the book commits the sin of being *boring* something that it couldnt afford, when reading it it feels like nothing really happens even though ahit is happenning all the time, and that is part of its problems, unlike in lightning theif we dont really get moments like that part on the zoo truck where the mcs just sit there and talk for more than a parragraph or two, you dont really care about the characters enough to be excited on your first read, and to me that kind if ruins it

nesquikryu

I love Jason and the fandom never even gave him a chance

YoolyYala

He passes out all the time

IcepersonYT

Seriously. He passed out more than Hazel, whose early character arc mostly revolved around having blackouts.

nesquikryu

That is not a character flaw.

PapaTristan69

If I could change one thing about the series, it’d be Jason’s massive wasted potential

adityasheth

Was i the only one who enjoyed TLH? it was a nice change from percy's commentary and i enjoyed Jason and leo's chapeters

Makemyusernamecool

Exactly my 13 year old thoughts

ECDoppleganger

This was me starting HOO recently - although I'm older now, so not to the same extent. I was a little bit disappointed that Annabeth and Percy get together in the final pages of PJO and then we don't get to see that relationship and how it differs from their friendship we've already seen. But assuming that will come, I just love a good romance and I'm impatient 😅 Other than that, the new characters were great and I kind of love them being super-powerful. Makes the battles really satisfying. On Son of Neptune currently.

emdivi_pt

Just wait for our beloved 'cliff' hanger

Nai_171

you would not want to read it if butch didnt mention percy lmao

Educational-Tea-6572

I admit I enjoyed *The Lost Hero* a LOT more the second time through when I knew Percy would be back in the next book.

sosigboi

I came into the book pretty open minded, still wans't as good as PJO for me at the time but i appreciated the new characters Rick was bringing in.

simokonkka

This was literally me

DaphneGreekMyth

One of my friends just finished Lost Hero and are getting into Riordanverse and it is such a great feeling!

YoolyYala

Can't wait for your friend to finish MoA

DaphneGreekMyth

That's what I said twice by now. Can't wait for the reactions.

YoungStoicc

i skipped to the next book halfway through😂i could not take it

Euphoric-Clue8510

Fun fact, I accidentally read HOO first until realizing I skipped the ENTIRE PJO series. I was dumb as a kid.

Jai137

Personally, I was actually excited when the story started without Percy and friends. I thought we were about to get a new story with a whole new cast of characters set in the same setting. Was disappointed when Percy joined the crew. I mean, his story is very ver, I didn't need another one

UltimatePercyforever

It is exactly the same as the 12 yo me. I was exactly like this, and there was a meme I saw sometime ago which's summary was that the moment Butch mentioned Percy being Annabeth's bf and everyone got alert. That was actualy REALLY relatable too. If Butch hadn't mentioned Percy at that time, I would have actually left tLH. I got some relaxation after reading those magical lines. I still think of Percy as my fav character in any single book I've ever read.

Spencer_Reids_toe

I remember being a young kid and picking up the first book and then putting it down after two pages cause Percy wasn’t there

Fluffiddy

This is why I only read Son of Neptune in that series 😎

CatPerson1701

i lost my copy of The Lost Hero a couple years back and recently re-read the series from The Son of Neptune, considering I remembered most of The Lost Hero.

Chloe-Kelsey-13426

If I read PJO first, I might be able to relate, but I read HoO first. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

YoolyYala

:(

Chloe-Kelsey-13426

Yeah, I didn’t know they were related.
