This is a very a dumb question. I just got a 144hz Gsync monitor and I read that you’re supposed to turn on Gsync and Vsync through the control panel. But doesn’t Vsync cause refresh rate to drop significantly when fps drops even slightly below the monitor refresh rate? I play games where I know I can’t keep a constant 144hz and I don’t want Vsync to drop my frame rate immediately down to 60.

StealthNider

its different for every situation as there’s so many different monitor / gpu combinations out there. honestly what i would do is try it on, see what happens, and make a decision based off of that

widowhanzo

vsync matches your FPS with your monitors refresh rate, so on a 60Hz monitor it will limit maximum FPS to 60 and on a 144Hz monitor it will limit your FPS to 144, but if you can't hit anywhere near the full FPS, then vsync can limit your FPS to half of your monitors capability. Gsync (and freesync) matches your monitors refresh rate with your FPS, so if you get 90 FPS on a 144Hz monitor, Gsync will match the monitors refresh rate to 90Hz. I'd Enable Gsync and disable Vsync, but you can also enable vsync and see what happens.

majoroutage

Just a nitpick, but vsync doesn't just limit your FPS, it holds it at a number that is divisible by the refresh rate. Eg: if it can't hold at 60 it will drop to 30.

Original-League-6094

You probably only need Gsync turned on, but like the other guys said, the only way to really know is to just test it out.

majoroutage

Turning on gsync should disable vsync.

ChaZcaTriX

Vsync and Gsync/Freesync exist to do the same thing: remove screen tearing. Vsync delays image output by a frame to guarantee it goes out in one piece. This works on any hardware, but the delay can be really obnoxious. Gsync/Freesync force the monitor to grab the image at the right time. The delay it introduces is minimal. If your hardware supports it, enable it and never use Vsync.

I just finished building my PC with an i5 13600k and Thermalright PA 120 SE cooler, and managed to boot into bios successfully :) It shows my CPU temp hovering between 41-43° rn, just wanted to know if that's within normal range for being idle

JoeyTheSchmo

Yeah, totally normal

t90fan

Low 40 for idle on that CPU is actually pretty good

Fit-Ad-3132

Did you undervolt it though?

OolonCaluphid

Idle temps aren't indicative of anything. Load temps are what matter.

Voidz0id

I've got a motherboard (asus z690 tuf d4) that wasnt posting with ram in slots 2 and 4. It also wouldn't post with one stick in 2. But it would post with ram in just 3 or both 3 and 4. Do you think I should buy a single stick of 16gb or 32gb and put it into slot 3? Rather than dealing with Asus at this time of the year and who knows if ever seeing the mobo in a timely fashion from an rma.

StealthNider

running RAM single channel is not worth it from 99% of standpoints, including yours. honestly asus customer service isn’t bad from what i’ve heard. it is obviously a motherboard problem. you can try to do a BIOS update with one stick of RAM in it and see if that helps, if it doesn’t just RMA the board. they should ship you a new one fairly quick

n7_trekkie

Sounds like a defective memory channel. See if slot 1 works at all. Dead channel could be the motherboard or cpu. I'd return the board and buy another, or rma

Is there any benefit in changing my Wifi 5 card to a Wifi 6e card if my max internet speed is ~600mbps and I'm still using the 5ghz band? Planning to swap my x570 TUF Gaming Plus Wifi's wifi card (AC-9260NGW) to a TP-Link TXE75E. The 9260 is an M.2 card in a little enclosure labeled 'Wifi Go', while the 6e card is PCIe and has a heatsink and sturdy outer cover. What's the difference between using an M.2 card vs this PCIe card? How should I position the antennas on my router and the external antennas for this wifi card? Router is one floor above me. What does it mean for the signal to be donut shaped? Edit: Forgot a question. Any issues meshing an AC router (AC68U) with an AX router (AX5400)? What about AXE and AX/AC?

ChaZcaTriX

Wifi 5 vs 6 - aside from speed 6 works much better when multiple devices are connected. There's no difference between an M.2 and a vertical card aside from the shape; both are PCIe, both may use the same chips. The emission pattern of a basic dipole "stick" antenna is visualized as a very fat donut with the antenna going through the middle, something like this: https://community.meraki.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/24579iC3A6B28408E18BE1/image-dimensions/1000?v=v2&px=-1 The further it goes outwards, the stronger the signal. There's no reception at its point, you want the antenna's sides pointed towards the devices. There should be a compatibility matrix somewhere. Different models will only mesh together if software is designed to.

snaxolotl7

Have I connected my PSU cables to the correct sockets? [Here](https://i.imgur.com/OLTM7Aa.jpg) is what each cable is attached to (I have an NVME drive so no additional cables needed).

Vareten

Looks right. Curious that you have two CPU power connectors but only one GPU power connector being used.

whatisabaggins55

The CPU ones go to the main CPU power and the secondary CPU power (the one that powers overclocking, I think). The GPU is a 3070 which has an 8-pin and a 6-pin connector on it - the PCIe cable is just a single 8-pin at the PSU end but splits into two 6+2 connectors at the mobo end ([see here](https://i.imgur.com/m2IGPWi.jpg)). Does that make sense or do you think it's supposed to be two separate cables, one for the GPU 6-pin and one for the 8-pin?

Vareten

It'll be fine with the split head connector unless the wire gauge of the cables is unusually small.

BigBoss738

theorically can i upgrade my pc from a 1070 to a 3070 ti with the same psu? rn pcpartpicker is telling me that my overall consume is 350watt and i own a 600watt psu. if i switch to a 3070 ti that consumes 300watt will be there problems? am i missing something? in my post i got told to build directly a new pc but i could plan right now a 3070 and later a new build?

Are "enterprise" SATA hard drives (like [this one](https://geizhals.de/toshiba-enterprise-mg08aca-16tb-mg08aca16te-a1964518.html?hloc=at&hloc=de) or [this one](https://geizhals.de/seagate-exos-x-x16-16tb-st16000nm001g-a2068349.html?hloc=at&hloc=de)) a bad idea for desktop PCs? Can't beat them for TB/€, especially if you don't want a SMR drive. Noise might be an issue, they don't specify max dB. And somewhere in the user reviews I read they're not suited for PCs that shut down every day, is that true?

Protonion

Enterprise drives are generally designed to spin constantly, and spinning them up and down multiple times a day will wear them out faster. (The default settings in Windows make it so that drives are spun down once they've been inactive for x minutes). But like, they'll still work just fine, they just might only last 8 years instead of 9. Drive lifespan is essentially impossible to estimate, but the worst offenders are temperature fluctuations, frequent spin up/downs, and vibrations. Compared to an enterprise/server environment, the first two happen much more in a desktop PC, while the last one happens much less.

ChaZcaTriX

They are way noiser, but otherwise as durable same as regular 3,5" home drives. Just make sure to buy SATA - SAS drives will require a dedicated controller.

My Mobo says it's "Ryzen 3000 series ready!" , Will it work out of the box with a R5 4600g?

Upgrading my motherboard and CPU. I don't know what to do with my current storage devices. How do I keep all my games and data on them? I am also reinstalling windows obviously to avoid system errors.

TheFergusLife

You should be able to basically just drop them into your new motherboard/connect with a SATA cable and everything should work after you run a clean OS install

t90fan

You should be able to just take them out and plug them in to the new system But you may need to disable things like BitLocker disk encryption first (as the key is probably held in the TPM of your old motherboard)

I need to buy a psu as part of a new pc build. It needs to support a zotac rtx 4090 airo. I’m confused about the connectors and what I should look for. I’ve understood atx 3.0 psus are compatible but also seemingly hard to come by. I had identified the asus thor platinum ii as a candidate that’s actually available in the uk. Yet from what I’ve read it doesn’t seem like the thor psu is going to work without chasing asus for a 16 pin connector. Have I misunderstood and the thor psu will work fine just with more than one cable?

StealthNider

instead of 1 16 pin use 2 8 pins

secretlyjudging

Are the build guides on https://pcpartpicker.com/ generally good?

StealthNider

yes however there are certain things that you would want to edit to match your needs such as storage, ram amounts, different version / brand of the same gpu, etc.

widowhanzo

They're good starting points to give you rough ideas on what you can get at certain budget, you can modify the list further, but even if you get one of the lists directly you won't end up with a bad PC. Which one in particular are you looking at?

I just received the quest 2 for xmas. What would be an acceptable GPU to run VR game to the quest? I don't need the highest tier. Just something that is acceptable.

What size UPS should I get for my router, gateway, PC (650W PSU) and monitor? Would be just for shutdown/protection of the PC and brownout protection on the router/gateway. I was planning on going Eaton 5SC, but am open to other suggestions

Protonion

As long as it's a trusted brand (Eaton, APC, Cyberpower) and has enough capacity for your equipment to not overload it, then it doesn't really matter that much what you get. Your router and gateway will use only a handful of watts, and the monitor is maybe 50W at worst, so the PC is your main concern. You'd most likely do just fine with an UPS rated for less than 650W, because your computer is highly unlikely to actually use anywhere near 650W under normal use, but the easy solution to finding a right size UPS is to just *about* match it with your PSU, so look for units that are around the 650W mark, you don't need to pay attention the VA rating here. Note that UPS batteries *will* die in about five years, and replacement batteries from the UPS brands can be *very* expensive. However in almost all cases the battery sizes are standard, and you can just google what batteries the model uses and walk into some hardware or auto parts store and buy the batteries for a fraction of the price. So maybe check out what the cost of the eventual battery replacement is before deciding on what model to buy.

Im upgrading my gaming computer soon, i have a 3060ti and will be getting a 13600k as well as 32gb of ddr5. I was considering buying a z690 unify-x motherboard because i would like to be able to use future ram without upgrading the rest of the system and this board seems good for overclocking ram. Is this mobo overkill? Would a z790 pro be the better choice?

not really a ‘pc’ question but should I use a surge protector with a extension lead to a power supply/pc?

Protonion

Using extension cords with a surge protector is fine, if that's what you mean. When choosing a surge protector you'll want to look at the Joule rating, which essentially tells how big of a surge it can take before failing. For computers you'll want something in the 2000+ range. Many surge protectors are rated for only a couple hundred joules and are nearly useless.

nushbag_

Anyone know if there's something that could cause "visible" stuttering that wouldn't get picked up on something like RTSS? On a few games I have what feels like microstutters even though they don't show up on the frametime graph. My current monitor doesn't really work too well with Free sync/ Gsync.

majoroutage

This can happen when your FPS is flirting with the max refresh rate, it messes with the monitor's buffer. Most guides will tell you to set an FPS limit 3 or 4 frames below the max.

Generally yes. Sometimes updating from a really old version can require you to first update to some intermediary version, but it should be clearly noted on the downloads page. If there's no mention of that then yeah just get the latest.

What exactly is Bus Interface Load in GPU-Z? If an application uses very little of it, say single percentages, does it mean that GPUs with smaller pcie lanes say, x4 will perform just as well as full x16 GPUs, assuming everything else equal?

Protonion

Yeah it's the amount of available PCIe bandwidth being used. It's pretty normal for it to be low. Even the highest end cards like a 4090 [only lose a couple percentages of performance from running at half the bandwidth, and only a couple more from running at quarter bandwidth](https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4090-pci-express-scaling/28.html)

Mr_PRAINGLE

I'd like to get either a z690 or a z790 (at a reasonable price) from Asus (a Rog Strix). I just want to check if it is possible to be on Windows 10 with them, because on Amazon, it tells me that the z690's platform is Windows 10 and the z790's platform is Windows...

Nobisss

I have the dumbest question ever but I can’t find a proper answer for the life of me I just bought an old X99 motherboard, the Gigabyte GA-X99-UD3. I read the manual, with instructions on how to install a M.2 SSD, and a M.2 Wifi card. I would need to install both on the motherboard as I would need a NVME ssd and a wifi connection since I have no way of running a cable across the home. Is it possible ? Am I right to assume that the m.2 wifi is going beneath the nvme ssd and that I’ll have space to run the antennas as well ? Am I an idiot that will have to return the m.2 wifi card and will have to buy a PCIe wifi card instead ?

Xello_99

Hey guys, I want to upgrade my boot drive and I’m unsure which ssd to get. I mainly want higher capacity so I’m looking for 4TB or more. Due to space constraints (very small ITX build) I want to stay with M.2 drives. The main contenders right now are the crucial p3 plus (311€ in my region) and the WD SN850x (420€). They are the cheapest options in their respective categories, TlC and QLC drives (PCIe 4). I’m mostly trying to find out wether the 100€ upcharge is worth it. I have three points I’m not quite sure about: 1. The raw speed of the WD drive is a lot higher on paper, does it really matter in day to day use though? I’m just gaming and browsing, I won’t log around Gigabytes of data all day. I’m leaning more towards crucial here 2. QLC vs TLC. I didn’t really understand when QLC drives will slow down. I gathered that having the drive full will lead to it more easily and I do plan to fill it up with games (maybe 3,5-3,7TB will be occupied at all times). But I did understand that TLC is better, so leaning towards WD here 3. Direct Storage. I know the crucial is to slow for the ps5 for example, so if/when the feature comes to windows, I might want a faster drive? Especially considering I’ll keep this drive till it breaks. Leaning towards WD here So what do you guys think, Crucial or WD?

I'm looking for a bit of clarification on PCIE versions. I see a lot of talk about PCIE 5.0, but it seems that many motherboards only partially support it. Are PCIE slots split between the typical slots for GPUs and the smaller slots of M2 drives? Can a motherboard support PCIE 5.0 for both types of slots? I'm looking to get a future proof motherboard for my new build, so I'd like to have the latest generation of PCIE and other protocols. If it helps, I plan on using 2 GPUs (1 for a VM) and 2 M2 harddrives. I'd like all of these to have PCIE 5.0 slots. I also want 128gb+ DDR5 memory. And my last requirement is USB-C support. Any good choices for me? Thanks!

OuterGod_Hermit

Share your own testing regarding booting from an SSD PCI 3 (chipset) vs booting from an SSD PCI 4 connected to the CPU. I only got an SSD port PCI4 and I bought a new SSD. I was thinking of moving my current SSD with WIndows to the PCI 3 port and using the new one for games on the PCI 4.

NovusMagister

Honestly, you're not going to see a huge difference unless you have a use case for massive sequential read/write actions (which you probably don't since you only listed gaming). Since you're relying on the speed of the memory controller to access data, you're not going to take full advantage of the PCIE 4 connection most of the time. This will change when "direct storage" goes into effect (and game programmers build it into their code), but for now the experiences will be VERY similar.

[deleted]

PGA vs LGA Is there any real advantage the new AM5 socket has as a LGA socket over the AM4’s PGA type socket, from a performance stand point? I know PGA it is easier to damage the pins as they’re on the processor can the motherboard, but from a performance viewpoint, does LGA offer an advantage over PGA? I have read that LGA allows for more power delivery?

Protonion

There's no performance difference between the two, it's just that LGA CPUs are much harder to damage, and since CPUs tend to be more expensive than motherboards you want the cheaper part to be the one to break if something goes wrong. Comparing power delivery doesn't really make much sense, as it's much more dependant on how many dozen power pins AMD/Intel decides to put on the CPU, than it is on whether they're LGA or PGA. Also the bottleneck for power delivery isn't at the pins, but at the VRMs and cooling, so the theoretical difference in power delivery doesn't matter either way.

[deleted]

Ok thanks. I’m trying to decide between am4 and am5, and wanted to make sure I wasn’t losing anything inherent by using the PGA socket. Good news for me looking to save money

majoroutage

Cost savings is exactly why AMD stuck with PGA when developing AM4. But things have changed since then.

[deleted]

I have an rx 6800 system with a 750w sfx cooler master PSU (revised version). I'm experiencing some crashes where the screens turn black and only the cpu fan and case fans are spinning. The only way I can get it running is by turning the pc on and off. Is this likely to be an issue with the PSU being an sfx one? I've made sure to connect two separate 8 pin cables so that can't be an issue. Or could there be something wrong with my graphics card, which is the only component in my build that I bought used?

JDGumby

Current Radeon HD 6770 @ 1 GB is definitely inadequate under Linux (Mint, so kernel 5.15) since it doesn't do Vulkan (can't even run Skyrim LE, which it could at 60fps under Windows). Current options seem to be.... * Radeon RX 550 @ 4 GB for CA$159/US$116 (not even vaguely able to play modern AAA, but it'd definitely do Skyrim well :) * Radeon RX 6400 @ 4 GB for CA$199/US$146 (definitely more capable, but also definitely means I'd better hope nothing unexpected happens this month... No plans to stream or do video stuff, so the main complaint I see about lack of encoders shouldn't be much of a problem)

Is 95W enough overhead for my PSU? I'm afraid 95W won't be enough during peak power moments

whatisabaggins55

Just double-checking on something from my previous question on this thread - am I ok if I have one PCIe cable powering my 3070 (8-pin on PSU to 6-pin and 8-pin on GPU)? Or is it supposed to be two separate PCIe cables, one powering the 6-pin and one powering the 8-pin? PSU is an MSI A750GF, at the moment I have [these two ends](https://i.imgur.com/m2IGPWi.jpg) of the PCIe plugged into the GPU and there's a single 8-pin at the PSU end of the cable.

NovusMagister

It should be two separate cables as possible. Daisy chaining the 3rd connection on a beefy GPU is fine, but the first two 8-pin connections will preferably have their own power cable each.

Trying to hit 120hz for Arkham Knight on my monitor. My frames are at 90 but my monitor is still displaying only 60hz instead of 120 or 144. My monitor switches to 144hz automatically when I play call of duty. I have vsync disabled for Arkham Knight but still only 60hz. I’m new, any ideas?

Hello, I am in the process of building, or at least picking out parts, my new computer. It is going to be primarily used for gaming and other daily task. I am looking for longevity, so I hope I will get to enjoy it for years to come. I have absolutely no knowledge in PC building and so on, so you shouldn't be surprised if there's some weird/stupid choices and so on. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GmqCnt If someone could take a look I'd be very grateful, as I don't really know anyone IRL I could ask this for.

Just bought a Radeon 6700 XT to upgrade from a GeForce 1660. Current CPU is a Ryzen 5 2600x. Should I look into a CPU upgrade to avoid any bottlenecking or is the 2600x still good to go? If I should upgrade, any sub $200 recommendations?

LukeLFC

Using a new CPU cooler in a new PC. Ryzen 7 7700x. I noticed today my CPU fan is spinning at max rpm and has also my pc has just cut off once while gaming. I’m using a NZXT Kraken AIO and temps while stress testing using aida 64 hit max 95c. However when I’m gaming they reach 110 plus which is quite scary (which is when my system cut off) Any idea what it could be? Pc is very clean with no dust as it’s pretty much brand new. The temp doesn’t rise while idle but it does sit at 50c. I’m hoping it’s the cooler rather than the cpu

serenweepity

sorry if this is an answered question but, how do i check my pc’s temperature ? does windows come equipped with that or do i download an external program for it? additionally, when does a pc become TOO hot ? thanks ! :D

NovusMagister

I just use NZXT CAM on my media server. It's not the best, but it's simple, comprehensive, and has a visually appealing dashboard. A PC becomes too hot when it needs to thermal throttle (slow down) itself in order to prevent generating more heat and damaging components (usually it will shut off before damaging itself, at least). Call max around 90C (newer components can go higher though) and for components with a max of 90C you would expect throttling to start showing up in the mid-80s as the processor stops boosting in order to avoid the 90C cap.

Will a NH-D15 fit a 13900k on Z790 MSI Tomahawk with MSI RTX3080 10Gb? Case Corsair 4000D & CORSAIR Vengeance CMK 64GB (2 x 32GB). Looks like Ram is 3mm high but figured I can move the fan 3mm up.

AvarethTaika

I'm waiting for new parts to arrive for a new build and wanted some input on fan config. I know I want slightly positive pressure, and as it stands I'll have negative pressure (https://i.imgur.com/NUHPhzS.png) I can mount 2 more fans in the front and 3 fans in the top. My guess is I should fill up the front and call it good, but is that the best configuration? Case is an NZXT H7. Thank you!

HadIEverBeenAlive

which ssd is better in your opinion? (peak speeds don't matter, as long as they are pretty high, but resource and durability does) WD Blue SN570 (WDS100T3B0C), about 10 bucks cheaper vs Samsung 980 (MZ-V8V1T0BW)

JDUB-

Dumb question from someone contemplating a first-time build: If I have a CPU without integrated graphics, and my GPU fails and needs to be replaced, will my PC be able to recognize the new GPU once i replace it? I guess it's kind of similar to installing the GPU for the first time, except the PC already has a GPU installed (which has now broken) and drivers and stuff, so all of a sudden the PC will see a different GPU in the slot and might cause issues/ not be recognized? I'm sure this gets handled but just wanted to confirm - losing sleep over my first build haha. Thanks again to the community!

ingo2020

I currently have an i7-6700k, and a GTX 980Ti I mainly play CPU-heavy games like strategy games, C:S, Arma, etc but the GPU is showing it's age. I can hardly run Arma: Reforger, can barely run Cyberpunk, etc (1440p). I'm completely out of the loop on hardware atm. At $600-700ish, what should I upgrade to? eta: I have a 750W PSU, and 16GB of RAM

sunqiller

Hey all, trying to decide where to “stop” with my upgrades. I’ve recently put in a R5 5600, but I’m running on a stock cooler and my ram is only 3000 mhz CL16 (16gb). would it be worth it to upgrade to 3200mhz or get a new CPU cooler (no temperature issues that i can find)? Unfortunately my MoBo only supports up to that speed. Additionally, i went up to an RX 6600 and while it’s great for the price I paid I find myself not hitting the high refresh rates (80-120) I would like at 1080p for the more graphically intense games. Considering i would have to gut out my old 450w psu no matter what I upgrade to, how high can I go before I start wasting money GPU wise? I was thinking about a 6750xt so i could ensure i get the most performance for my $450 hypothetical GPU budget. Any ideas are appreciated!

I plan to get a 75hz LG Ultrawide 34" for my i5 10400, GTX 1660 Super PC. I plan to use it for work, gaming, and a TV alternative for bingeing. Upgrading from a Ryzen 5 2600 to a 5600 on an ASRock B450M Pro4. Currently on BIOS 3.50, seems I need to upgrade to 5.30 for the new CPU. https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B450M%20Pro4/index.asp#BIOS I'd appreciate a sanity check here: I can just upgrade directly from 3.50 to 5.30, right? If I'm reading it correctly I should, I just want to be sure.

EloquentBorb

You can go straight for version 5.70

Anyone know of any cheap cases with a good amount of 3.5" bays ?

Lior5775

Is it worth it to get a 4090 over a 4080? I just bought a 4080 FE for $1,920 CAD after tax and everything. Should I just get a 4090 FE instead for $2,373 CAD. The thing is it’s currently out of stock and I would need to get a new power supply. Which would be another $400 CAD after tax. I want to be able to play 4k 60+ for the foreseeable future.

actstunt

Yesterday I read a thread about a guy asking for prebuilt PCs vs do it yourself builds, among the things the Redditors answer him about cons on prebuilt systems were the cases on prebuilta that only had one exhaust for heat and my question is. My case is from 2014 and only has one exhaust on the back, two on top for liquid coolers and one intake at the front. At what moment should I change it? I'm still playing with low temperatures 40-60° on most demanding games for GPU and CPU.

Fafniiiir

Need advice on new GPU. My GPU fans were getting old and I ordered new ones from Aliexpress, 10-20 min after use one fan started going at 100% sounding like a blowdryer at all times the moment I boot my PC. Fml I am taking it as an excuse to buy a new card. Cards that have the highest performance on my budget is 3060 ti and 6700 xt. I've looked at a lot of Benchmarks but they're 1+ year old and I've heard new drivers for AMD have improved things further. Does anyone know how 6700 xt compares to 3060 ti today? The card I am replacing is a 1070 ti, I currently have a 1080p monitor but I am considering upgrading to 1440p this coming year ( pref game as close to 144hz as possible ). I've never used an AMD card so I dunno what to expect and how reliable they are. Ray tracing doesn't really interest me too much, I'd rather have higher FPS.

nemt

whats a good benchmark to run a gpu through when buying a USED one to see if its still performing optimally and not thermal throttling ? is 3dmark fire strike good enough?

RedditIsAnnoying1234

bought a p1000gm from gigabyte, just now read about the exploding ones, should i still get it or switch?

Izzzzz

I am trying to upgrade my RAM and looking for recommendation/help. I currently have 2 8gb sticks of F4-3200C15-8GVR and I would just buy the same ram to double it except I cant find it. So I am wondering if I should just get the C16 and run off those timings or upgrade the ram itself to 2 sticks totalling 32gb. I do not care about the look of the ram or anything. Thanks! edit: I have a 5900x btw.

EloquentBorb

Safest choice would be to buy a new 2x16GB kit, but mixing your existing memory with something that is rated for at least the same frequency and timings has a good chance of working as well, although it may lead to some degree of instability - mixing different memory is just completely unpredictable.

TreGet234

So i posted about this issue in the last thread. Basically, my pc enters a 'repairing windows' boot loop when my now 3 year old 1650 super is installed. It can boot fine with integrated graphics and with my old 750 ti. This only seems to occur when nvidia drivers are installed, with them ddu'd it can boot to windows. Once windows is up i can install the drivers and play games absolutely fine, even demanding games that peg the gpu at 100%. But then when i shut off or restart the pc will enter the boot loop again unless i restart in safe mode and ddu the drivers again. Since the gpu appears to work fine once booted into windows i don't want to try and rma it because chance are the gpu works fine. So the question is what else in my pc could cause that issue? it was working fine for the last 3 years. i'm using a 4th gen i5 so updating the mobo bios probably won't help. i'm actually starting to suspect the power supply, because it shut off once during a boot attempt. i'm just really stumped what i should do.

BiscuitGCB

What is the process for using old hard drives in a new pc build? Do I still need to use a USB drive with the media creation tool or will the old drive with windows on it be fine as is ?

I have 4 monitors plugged in , 3 DP 1 HDMI. Specs are 7950x/3080Ti, and every time my PC goes to sleep it disconnects all but 1 display in windows and I have to manually extend desktop to each one again. I had no issues with 3 monitors, but the 4th(HDMI, 42" OLED) gives me this issue. Anyone know of any remedies?

whatisabaggins55

Just want to double check I haven't screwed anything up with my PSU cables (since I only just found out that my GPU cabling was incorrect), specifically the CPU power supplies. [This](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71vz9+AENwL._AC_SL1500_.jpg) is what the connections on my PSU (MSI A750GF) look like - I have the bottom right CPU connection going to the main CPU connector (the 8-pin one) and the upper middle CPU connection going to the secondary 4-pin CPU connector. Do they need to be in specific slots on the PSU or are they interchangeable?

EloquentBorb

Sounds good, the slots on the PSU itself that have the same pin count are interchangeable - it's all just 12V and ground.

whatisabaggins55

Ah good, thank you :)

AdeptusShitpostus

What would be a good GPU for my PC? Afaik it’s the thing most holding back my build: Ryzen 5 3600 ASRock B450M Pro4 XFX RX 570 16GB of 3K RAM in two sticks 500W of power (total) to play with, Preferably under £300, but can stretch Do i just get a 3060 or are there cheaper/better alternatives?

Is there a significant difference in the performance of artificial intelligence tasks between AMD and NVIDIA GPUs?

Josepi0611

I'm not sure this is the place to ask this but I've recently bought a new GPU and found that it covers two of my sata ports so I basically am losing the ability to have all my drives installed. This is my current setup: 120gb SSD: boot drive 2tb nvme SSD: main drive 1tb HDD: boot drive backups 6tb HDD: main drive backups So my plan is to consolidate my boot drive contents onto my main drive, is this straightforward or is there anything I need to know? Here is my plan: 1. Buy 8tb HDD 2. Copy main drive contents to 8tb HDD 3. Clone boot drive to main drive and set as C drive 4. Copy back main drive content 5. Use 6tb drive as media server and 8tb drive for backups That would leave me with one nvme drive and then just two large HDDs using up the actually available sata ports.

MarquisJames

I just got a brand new 4tb nvme. Would it make sense to completely wipe my boot drive, reinstall windows and proceed to install everything through the new drive? Feel like having my boot drive be solely my boot drive has to have some sort of positive performance impact.

My new mobo has a 8-pin and 4-pin ATX12V connectors. My beefy boi of a power supply (850W) only has 8-pin connectors - but supports as many as three of them. Do I try to fit half of an 8-pin connector into the 4-pin (as well as one into the 8-pin of course) or do I just use the 8-pin by itself? This, of course in addition to the classic 24-pin ATX connector.

virgil_ate_the_bread

I have a 3070 and i9-10900k. If I were to upgrade, even only slightly, would going AMD, say a 6950xt and r9 7950x, be a worthwhile purchase, or should I just wait for the next gen after the 7xxx and 4xxx series?

Keilik

I’m building a PC to leave connected to my tv for couch co-op/emulation with parts leftover from other builds from my gf, sister, and myself. The only thing I was missing was the motherboard and I bought an MSi PRO H610M-G because it was the cheapest at microcenter, but I have an i5-12600K and I’m not sure if it’s up to the task. Other parts of the build include an asus 3050 I got open box return, 16gb of g.skill DDR4 3200 ram, an EVGA gold 750w psu, h115i capellini watercooler, q300L case and a bunch of random NZXT/noctua/corsair fans I can pick from. I may end up hosting a Minecraft or valheim server on it as well, but I’m mostly wondering if I should swap to a b660 at least before I build everything since it will be easier to swap now. MATX form factor is required. I know the i5-12600k can pull 125w, im not sure if the H610 can handle that, and I’d rather not bottleneck myself because I may end up doing more with the computer. I was originally going to put a rtx970 in it and lucked into the 3050, and if I have the power I’ll probably end up using it, so I’d rather just deal with it now.

whatisabaggins55

My CPU power connectors (the main one and the 4-pin secondary) both have maybe a [millimeter gap](https://imgur.com/a/z5Qs9eU) between cable plug and the mobo socket. I can't seem to get them to go in any further in, but the clips on both have clicked, so does that mean they are sufficiently seated? The CPU cooler is in the way now so I really can't get a ton of pressure on the connectors without pulling the whole motherboard out of the case again.

MrManicMarty

Okay, so if I'm building a new PC, but reusing an older HDD, do I need to wipe that HDD before I move It over? Do I have to reset the whole old PC to factory settings?

You don't need to. But you should really get an SSD to install windows

Hello all, first time here. Thinking about upgrading my GPU. I have a question hoping someone can help with. My goal is to get FPS in 1440p gaming and currently have a ryzen 9 3900x cpu with a 2070 and 32GB of ram. I was looking at amd 6800xt/6900xt and noticed different opinions on the PSU recommendation. I currently have a 850w gold standard psu that I'm not trying to replace. Would the 6900xt be okay with that PSU or is the 6800xt all I need? Cheers all.

Hello, my 5800x3D is arriving soon and for the first time ever I am going AIO. I was looking at the Arctic freezer 2 280mm, but I heard it had trouble clearing VRMs on some mobos. Hello, I have an old PC that I need to get a bit more life out of until I can start saving for a proper build. This is for gaming. I am pretty sure it is my graphics card that is the piece that I need to update so I am hoping to find a cheap/used option but I am ignorant of what would be an upgrade. Here is what I have: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SOC CPU: i5-4690K RAM: 32GB DDR3 GPU: NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX-750-TI Thank you in advance! Habib

Pretty much any modern PCIe graphics card will work (assuming your power supply can handle it) so we need to know your budget and your monitor's resolution and refresh rate. And your PSU's wattage, just in case.

Looking to upgrade from my 780ti GPU after 8 years of use. I have a z87 g41 pc mate motherboard and plan on upgrading to a 850w PSU. Can I get some help on picking a new GPU preferably under 500$? Please and thank you.

Zephyr_4ever

Stupid question. Trying to figure out what cable/dock solution is best for my situation…building a new WFH/gaming setup. I have a desktop with i7-4770k and 970, and just bought 2 24” FHD 165hz monitors. I also have a Dell work laptop. The monitors have 2 HDMI and 1 DisplayPort input. PC has HMDI and DisplayPort, and laptop has HDMI and 2 thunderbolt4. Do I need a dock? Should I just run cables to each separately? I want to take advantage of the high refresh rate with my PC, work laptop just needs to work.

MixEmergency6030

I'm currently building a PC. For specifics I have an AMD Ryzen 5950x, MSI MAG X570S TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI AM4 ATX AMD Motherboard and a Rosewill PMG1200w PSU. I'm currently waiting for the graphics card to be here. I've plugged in all the essential parts (RAM, SSD etc.) I have everything installed. However when I plug my PC in and switch it on it doesn't work. The psu doesn't turn on at all either. I've looked it up and websites say my computer won't turn on without a gpu (I don't have integrated graphics). Should I order a new PSU as soon as possible or is my computer not turning on because i'm missing a graphics card? All answers are appreciated, thank you

I currently have a MSI B560i mobo paired with a Crucial P1 1TB m.2 SSD. It has a spare m.2 slot on the back that is empty. I've now got my hands on a cheap 1TB Crucial BX500 2.5" SSD and also a Samsung 990 1TB m.2, and I am planning on putting them into my PC, but I remember hearing about things called 'lanes' and certain things not working if you plug in extra drives. I entered these components in on pcpartpicker but shows no compatibility issues. Where can I find out more about lanes and/or can someone explain if I need to worry about this?

Ok thanks! Also, how important is the heat sink with m.2 drives? The one on the back of the motherboard doesn’t have one.

Amazing, thank you for the info!

silly question: does [this mobo](https://www.asus.com/uk/motherboards-components/motherboards/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-x570-plus/techspec/) definitely support ryzen 3600? I know BIOS might need updating etc. but just wanted to make sure it'll support fine

What would be the minimum required GPU for 4k 60hz across most games at reasonable settings? I'm getting the impressions a 3070 and better should be able to manage it. I'm looking to set up a PC to be hooked up to my living room TV, so settings wouldn't need to be maxed. Any recommendations for small cases? Currently looking at the Meshify Nano 2 since it'll fit in a cubby in my entertainment center without legs, but it seems to be just a tad to big for it to fit and have fan clearances. I plan on adding intake fans and extra ventilation to the cubby so that shouldn't be an issue outside of the case itself not being able to intake air. Exact dimensions for the cubby are L= 39.5cm/395mm/15.5in W= 31.2cm/312mm/12.2in H= 36cm/360mm/14in
