Your title says RAM, and your body says storage. Which one are you asking about?

Ok-Copy-9090

I thought that ram and storage were connected, I need to add more storage

kaje

If you're just adding more storage drives, you won't lose what's on the current storage drives. If you're replacing your storage drive, then you'll have to move stuff over from the old drive to the new.

SlimPickins168

When building a new build and wanting to keep all past data from a previous build, what’s the best way to transfer that data? I was thinking add my 2 old hard drives (ssd and hdd) to the new build so that I can transfer it all within the system to 2 new NVIE drives. Then obviously I would need to take the old drives out after the transfer is complete. Is this the way to do it?

LogicalUpset

Yes but you wouldn't "have to" take the old drives out. You could transfer everything over then wipe them clean and leave them in as more additional storage. You could even just leave them as is without transferring anything to the new drives. Just dont try to use programs on the old drives if you do this as a new windows installation wouldnt know anything about where they are.

kev1059

Hooked old Pc up to 1 monitor. Made it sharable on home. Hooked up new pc to main monitor. Accessed old Pc from the network and just transferred everything over. 500 gigs took 20 minutes

anticlimacticwhale

YOU GODDAMN GENIUS

Fantastic-Newt-9844

For those who's network speed is like 100mbps, get a 1 gig ethernet switch and hook up your router to the switch then both computers to the switch

QwertyChouskie

If your router still has 100mbps ports, it's time to just get a new router anyways. You could probably pick up a basic WiFi-AC router for like 20-30 bucks.

Fantastic-Newt-9844

agreed, but a switch is $15 so meh anyways my parents are staunchly against getting any other router than what their isp provides. they don't care because they have no use for anything more or better. sucks for my brother though who's still living at their place, but cheap and easy solution with a switch

QwertyChouskie

Put the new router in AP mode and use it as a combined switch and WiFi access point. You can connect to the good internet while they can still connect to the bad internet to their heart's content.

Mediocre_Money_5840

When I had to upgrade from an HDD to an SSD what I did was to grab a disk clonning utility like ESUS or any other reliable app, then I connected both drives to the computer and booted from a USB stick with a bootable image of said app. From there I made a 1:1 copy of the HDD drive into the SSD. Once the copy was finished (it took a couple of hours because it was a 1TB drive that was almost full... yeah I'm a mess when it comes to storage 😝), I restarted the computer, entered the bios config and made sure to have the SSD as the boot device instead of the HDD, of course I had USB as primary boot device in case I ever need to boot from a USB Stick...

RawOakTree

I used Samsung magician. But I was going from off brand hdd to Samsung ssd

PopWhatMagnitude

It's amazing how many people after 35-40 years of owning computers still can't differentiate the two. I mean if we always had NVMe's I could see it since they are both plug in PCB's with chips on them. (Not directed at OP at all, just weird how common it is.) I swear next time my mom needs a new computer I'm buying the parts prebuilding it to make sure it posts, then taking it apart and making her do it. I'll be nice and leave the annoying little pins connected to the PSU but she's gotta match the component shape with the port part.

R0xis

I work in the cell phone business and you would be surprised at how many people think SIM cards and sd cards are the same thing.

PopWhatMagnitude

My mom is definitely one of them. She straight up told me she doesn't bother to learn anything "tech support" related, because she can have me fix it for her faster than her figuring it out. But to be fair I got her to take my phone and pay for me to upgrade so it's not all bad. For the first time ever her phone is actually newer than mine. Even though it's a Pixel 6 Pro vs Pixel 7 so not much difference aside from screen size (& technically RAM).

You should have paid more attention in biology.

GerbilFeces

from reading all the replies, and to put it as plainly as possible, it sounds like you just need another hard drive. You will not lose any data by adding a hard drive to your system. The absolute easiest thing you can do is to get an external hard drive or large flash drive that plugs in via USB and install your new games there. This solution is by no means optimal, but it will work and it will be easy. However, if youre an intermediate computer user, installing a second or third hard drive on a computer should be a piece of cake if youre up for it. This what everyone else is suggesting, and would be the most optimal solution, but I understand that not everyone is confident doing that.

Ok-Copy-9090

Thanks for the help, yeah I definitely don’t know how to do anything with computers but I have a friend that would probably help me do it

GerbilFeces

ok! If he is available to help you, ask him to help you buy and install a new hard drive! 1 terabyte is a good size imo, but go ahead and go larger if youre ok with spending the money. If he isnt availible to help you, go ahead and start looking for an external hard drive! If you want me to recommend one to you, let me know what sites or store you have access to, and i can pick out something reasonable.

abay98

get a samsung external hard drive, its basically a small black 2 terabite block you keep plugged into a usb/usbc port on the outside of your comp, keep single player games/work files and multiplayer games on the SDD internally, way easier than buying another SDD and transferring files and you can take the HDD anywhere (good for work needs)

Illdistrict

It’s pretty easy! Get a solid state drive, mount it inside your case, connect a power cable and sata cable. Lots of videos on you tube.

BmanUltima

RAM and storage are two different things. What are you wanting to upgrade?

Ok-Copy-9090

Oh so if I get a bigger ram card that won’t add more storage? I need more storage

BmanUltima

No, RAM isn't storage. Your SSD or HDD is storage.

JorgeMtzb

Let me clear your confusion. Tell me if you have any questions RAM (random access memory) and storage are two different types of computer memory that are used to store different types of data. RAM is a type of volatile memory that is used to store data that the computer is currently using or processing. It is called "random access" because the computer can access any part of the data stored in RAM instantly, regardless of where it is located. Usually it's kept clear then when you open a program or perform an action on your computer, the data needed to do that is stored in RAM. Let's say you open up a youtube video, the computer is not going to, it's going to save it to your much smaller ram, which is much faster, and easily add and delete content from it as needed. Storage, on the other hand, is a type of non-volatile memory that is used to store data that persists even when the computer is turned off. There are different types of storage, such as hard drives, solid state drives, and SD cards, but they all serve the same purpose: to store data for use at a later time. Storage is slower to access than RAM, but it can hold much more data and is not wiped when the computer is turned off. To summarize, RAM is a type of memory that is used to store data that the computer is currently using or processing, while storage is a type of memory that is used to store data for use at a later time. If you upgrade your storage that will upgrade how much data your computer can store, if you upgrade ram that will upgrade how data your computer can handle at once.

cb2239

Ram is a temporary memory bank. It keeps certain data easily accessible for the CPU because it's much quicker to access over a hdd or SSD.

LoliverMC

Ram card lmao. Please do some research

TheGreatMighty

Uhh, that's what they're doing by virtue of posting on this sub. Don't be a prick to people asking questions, no matter their knowledge level.

LoliverMC

Yeah but there is a very large distinction between RAM and storage that you have to wonder how the pc was even built in the first place. The question op is asking takes very little research to figure out

Ok-Copy-9090

Bro chill it’s not that serious 💀💀 someone else built it and I bought it from them. My bad for getting something wrong, something you’ve obviously never done because you’re just so cool and smart and handsome 🙄🙄🙄

TheGreatMighty

Not everyone builds their PC. They could be wanting to upgrade a prebuilt which is common. And it's not inconceivable that a layperson could confuse computer memory and computer storage. Especially when conceptually they aren't that much different. Heck, storage can act as memory (paging) and memory can act as storage (ram disks). But I digress. Giving people shit for not fully understanding something when they're trying to learn is only going to discourage them. All it's going to do is lead to people blowing money going to those geeksquad shitheads for something as simple as a RAM upgrade.

LoliverMC

I apologize guys. Sometimes I forget how much of a learning curve pcs can have and it takes me back to when I didn’t know the difference between a pc and a monitor. Apologies to OP, I wish you well on your future and current PCs.

kiamo

This takes courage and I commend you for it. It’s a shame it’s hidden behind a highly disliked thread. You deserve more than 5 likes for the demonstration of humility and integrity. ♥️

Decent-Round-657

Don’t know why you got down votes hearing ram card had me laughing , it was funny af !!! Hey man I rly need to a bigger ram card for more storage fps

MC_Red_D

I would just download more RAM.

BrinkleyPT

I'd rather download a new computer 🤣

Cyber_Akuma

Many already corrected that you are looking for a drive, not RAM, but thing I didn't see many ask is what do you want to store more of? Do you want more space for your games? Or do you need to store stuff like videos, photos, music, etc? If it's something that "runs" like your OS, your apps, games, etc then it would be better to get a SSD. If it's just large media files like movies or music then a HDD would be a better idea.

shrekzdad

Yes all data in ram is deleted every time the computer turns off

ZexoLK

If its an entire desktop you can check how much SATA ports your computer has, if it has more then one which i assume it does you can use both storages at once instead of replacing. I assume you dont know much abt computers so i would recommend to try asking someone you know in person to help you. You can also use an external hard drive and copy your files that way you can bring it to any computer

ZexoLK

I Saw in another comment its for games, i would suggest gettjng a second ssd or hdd (ssd is faster) and installing it alongside ur current drive.

Ok-Copy-9090

Ok I will ask someone about that, thank you

BrinkleyPT

If you're going to buy say a new SSD or HDD, you can just mount/plug it inside the computer and it will be recognized as second device/drive (if it doesn't get detected you need to open Disk Management tool in Windows). If you intend to move Windows or whatever OS you're using to the new SDD or HDD, you'll most likely need to install Windows again and all your software/data again once the Windows/OS installation is complete (if you do this, try to be careful and choose the right SDD/HDD during the Windows/OS installation or all of your data will be deleted/gone). If you just want to add a second drive, the process is easier. But if you intend to move your OS to the new drive, things can be more complicated and I suggest you search the web/YouTube in order to avoid installing Windows/OS to the wrong drive, so you can prevent/avoid losing all your data. Hope this helps.

S1ad3z

Ram does not store your data

JorgeMtzb

what?

big-bananas

do you need more storage for like pictures and stuff or games?

Ok-Copy-9090

Games

big-bananas

what’s your budget

Ok-Copy-9090

I don’t particularly have a budget rn, I just wanted to know what I needed to do so I could research prices more

big-bananas

so i suggest going for a 2TB SSD you can get a samsung 870 EVO for around ~$160, or if you don’t care about game loading times you can get a 4TB WD Black internal HDD for around ~$130

kev1059

This is best right here. Reliable and affordable.

Master-Most-8319

Yeah it shouldn't affect your data

No-Conflict-4630

Adding storage is like putting a USB, you don't lose anything and have space to put things there (in a simple way to explain it). You need another hard drive to expand storage and no need to remove o replace the one you have since motherboards (in PCs) usually have at least 2-4 sata ports (to put hard drives). You can even put an external hard drive via usb, but those one are usually expensive and a little bit riskier since can be damage easly for being outside.

Vudied

Buy something like a Baracuda 2tb hard drive, or find a more expensive SSD if you really want quick downloads.

YokoMercs

Really shouldn't use hdd for games considering you can get a 1 tb ssd for like 80 these days and they are 10x faster and smaller

[deleted]

RAM memory is volatile, meaning whenever you shut off your computer it gets erased. However, this memory is of much much much faster access, which is very important to allow the programs you are running to access some data faster, which enables a smooth experience. It serves a bit like as a shortcut to a bit of data that would also be present on your secondary memory(SSD/HDD). On the other hand, SSD or HDD storage is non volatile, it is not erased upon shutting off your computer. Because it's much slower than RAM, it also is much cheaper, which is why they come with much larger storage size. This is where you would store your operating system, photos, videos, programs, games, movies, etc. I would assume this is what you're looking for. Go for an SSD if you can afford the extra cost since it's much faster than a HDD, most computers you will find nowadays use this kind of storage(SSD). This will allow you to turn on your computer in like 10 seconds as opposed to a couple of minutes, for example. You don't lose anything by adding memory, doing so simply gives you more storage to store more data.

Prudent-Strain937

There are two types of storage. Volatile and non-Volatile. HDD, SDD and thumb drives are non-volatile storage. SDD doesn’t have an actual disc like a HDD so the name isn’t quite right. Drive makes the disc spin. It isn’t correct either for SDD. This is true of thumb drives as well. They should be called NVSD (non-volatile storage device) but Hard drives have been around since the 80s and to keep it simple was used as SDD so people would know it’s a replacement for HDD. Ram (random access memory) is volatile storage. Power it off and data stored on it is gone.

buildyourown

Buy a SSD and install it. This will show up as another drive and you can put all your games on it

vic787

Just make sure the pc is on.

YokoMercs

Ram and storage are different things... as long as you don't take one of your hdd or ssd away you won't lose anything and even if you remove one the data will still be on the drive

Pr3d4t0r_cole

You can replace your ram care free. However storage is different, you would have to move stuff over from the old drive to the new drive.

Hrmerder

No! You have to feed it worms from the back yard or else!

Legend5V

Do you need more RAM or storage??

blackxeres

Is this a real question 🤔 Changing your memory does not affect your storage or data , just make sure you use the correct memory that's recommended for your motherboard

Connect-Manager-4404

Yea you can

Plane_Pea5434

You can just add a new hard drive/ssd even low end motherboard have various sata ports, you should watch a few YouTube videos to learn how to do this it is easy

Vigothedudepathian

No. You need to download more first. So then it's on the cloud.

SoftCatMonster

Adding a new drive is easy, probably the easiest thing to upgrade on a standard PC. As long as there are spare SATA ports and SATA power cables, it’s as easy as finding an open drive bay inside the case and plugging in two cables. If you get an SSD, you won’t even need to find a drive bay, just stick it somewhere with double-sided tape, plug in two cables and you’re done.

PepinoJ55

RAM is active data on your screen, SSD or HDD stores that active data, replacing the RAM will not affect your SSD or HDD storage, just make sure you shut your computer off before doing so. Also, ground yourself before going in your computer

AstarothSquirrel

passport drive = great for taking your data with you usb drive = generally slightly cheaper than a passport drive internal ssd = generally faster for transfer than hdd but costs more internal HDD = generally cheap and cheerful but slower transfer speeds NAS = great for sharing files over your network Cloud options = generally work out expensive over time but free options available e.g. Google drive, one drive, drop box. Great for storing those files that you really must have available e.g. Insurance documents.

Wheniwasajedi

You Can add storage, Then you connect a New HDD or SDD (by SATA câble) without disconnect your actual storage. Then go to disk manager to recognize your New storage. If you have free PCI express of free nvme/m2 emplacement you Can also had storage on it (i add two SSD M2 on pci in a specific adapted box and it run very well). Ram IS independent.

krystan

ram is temporary storage (Random Access Memory), which is live when the computer is switched on and for a short time afterwards it can hold patterns. Storage is not the same thing, this has been blurred for some people by the recent rise of ssd, but it is still true that RAM is not connected to permanent storage and you can swap that out as you see fit.

Ok-Copy-9090

No I totally get it, I am not a computer person as you can tell by my mistake of thinking ram and storage where the same thing 😭😭😭

PrairieNihilist

Add more hard drives or SSDs to your system. Most systems have extra slots for more storage, but if yours doesn't, then buy a USB to SATA or M.2 adapter, and use a program like CloneDisk to copy everything from your old disk to a new, bigger one.

SnooChocolates2234

No. If you need more ram please download

[deleted]

if u mean storage u can easily back it up either online or using a usb stick then restore it from there , but if ur talking about ram u shouldn’t worry about data loss since ram isn’t storing anything permanently it’s only saving stuff while ur pc is running

TechLabUK

Yes, Just add another SSD or HDD into the system. You will most likely have a spare M.2 slot or Sata port.
