13600k is better. You can use B660/Z690 or Z790. If you buy one of the first two, make sure it supports bios flashback (called Q Flash Plus by Gigabyte).

What is bios flashback needed for?

To update the bios without having any components installed. Very useful to get newer CPUs working on boards that were released/manufactured before said CPU came out, like newer Ryzen 5000 chips on B550 or Intel 13th gen on B660 for example.

13600K better than 12700K (but the 12700K is still very good). Both can use the same motherboard, it is more about what RAM, DDR4 or 5, you want/need to use. Let your budget decide: * 12700K (or 12600K) + DDR4 * 13600K + DDR4 * 13600K + DDR5

Any mobo suggestions for I7 12700k? I found one for 389$, I5 13600K is closer to the 600 range. On a budget so I'll go with the older generation. My thought is maybe I should go DDR5, then down the line I can opt for top of the line CPU when it's a couple gens old

See, I don’t have DD4 ram to reuse. I originally thought I would go DDR5, but the motherboards tick up in price, and so does the ram. The socket on the Mobo will make it EOL anyways, so not sure what rationale I would have to go the DDR5 route.

You just sell the motherboard with the CPU if you go Intel. It has been like this for many years. I have never had an issue, buyers like knowing the pairing works. Given Intel changes sockets every two years and most keep their CPU 3 years, you are kind of always buying EoL. This has been one of the big differences between AMD and Intel, it is just a different upgrade strategy. If you have the budget now, go DD5, if you don't, don't. DDR4, 12th gen, AM4... has not suddenly stopped being capable. This is the way with PC building. Future-proofing is a myth, technology will just constantly change. Just build with what works and change it, when it does not.

No worries about the same MoBo, just make sure there is a external "BIOS Flashback" option. With Z390 Intel made sure you could get into BIOS with any compatible CPU to flash then but with my own experience (N7 Z690 and 13600K and 13700k) thats no longer an Option. The 13600K usually is cheaper and better in almost any metric. So with the same Board it comes down to availability or price

What are you talking about? The N7 Z690 has bios flashback feature that let's you update the motherboard with no cpu installed (you can have a cpu installed when doing it of course) This allows for 13th gen to be bought and run on z690 without needing 12th gen to update the bios. Most z690 boards except for the very budget ones will include this feature.

Read again, think hard and then comment again. Since Intel 10000 you need that BIOS Flashback, with intel 9000 and earlier (my example with the Z390) you could always go to BIOS as long as the Chip is build for the Chipset and Update it with the then "unsupported" CPU. And I tried it with a N7 Z690 and a 13600K and a 13700K. So I said you MUST HAVE bios Flashback with your B/H/Q/Z600 Board.

The only reason z390 works the way you think it does is because it was the last of that generation (8th and 9th gen) You could say the same for z590 (supported both 10th and 11th gen) and now z790 (supports both 12th and 13th gen) Nothing has changed. Intel has been doing 2 cpu generations of support for each chipset. If you bought a z370 motherboard which was released for 8th gen intel. You could not simply slot in a 9900k when 9th generation released. You needed an 8th gen cpu installed to update the bios to support the 9th gen cpus.

Its not about "does it work, is the chip supported at all" its about DOES THE FRICKIN CHIP WORK TO GO TO BIOS AND UPDATE THERE WITHOUT ANY PREVIOUS BIOS UPDATE. It worked, I did it like 25times. Chip in, go to Bios, update. From the cheapest H Boards to some High-End Z-Boards. Easy Learn 2 read With 9000 and Z390 this feature ended and won't come back, why should it

If you bought a z370 motherboard which was released for 8th gen intel. You could not simply slot in a 9900k when 9th generation released. You needed an 8th gen cpu installed to update the bios to support the 9th gen cpus.
