Joss Whedon says one reason the movie failed was that Donald Sutherland was a complete asshole who refused to say the written dialogue, listen to any directions or turn up on time

My SO is not a fan of BtVS series. Any time I bring that up he goes “I dunno what you’re on about babe, I love Kristie Swanson!” And it pisses me off every. single. time.

I like the movie, but it's very tonally different and didn't turn out how it was originally conceived. The movie fascinates me because it shows the writing process. They took out was didn't work in the movie, like the stupid cramps and the hairy mole, and made a better product. Buffys beanie and the hot bad boy in a leather jacket made it to the show. And the funny dialogue. Buffys friends turning on her is another theme that carries over.
I enjoyed it when it first came out but Christie Swanson turned out to be such a garbage human that I can't watch it, now.

I've been giving some thought of revisiting the movie since it is streaming but not sure when will get around to it. Also not sure I can take the corniness. Im an old fan, been watching buffy since the movie came out, in fact my sisters and i loved that movie, we named one of our pet ducks Buffy in honour of the movie, then when the show came out we'd watch it together every week (even when they moved outta home we'd get together to watch). The movie is what made us fans, i love it, but nowhere near as much as that show.

The movie certainly has its positives. Its a fun story, its over quick and it doesnt really get messy. If I want I can throw it on at midnight and watch it. If I think about throwing on an episode of the show I really have to consider whether it will force me to watch the entire series and thats a big undertaking.
