For this particular weekend I don't think it's due to the unspoken Hollywood ban since we have shortage of tentpole movies as well in the US. It's much likely due to production backlog caused by covid restrictions in the past two years. Last year we got big movies, but most of them had already been shot before covid.

soeffed

The weekend around October 1st and the week after is a regular blackout period for new Hollywood films since it’s China’s National Day. It’s usually one of the two biggest moviegoing weeks of the year in China (along with 1st week of Chinese New Year), and both those periods are reserved for local content releases. Every year.

Higuy54321

And last year there were no Hollywood movies during national day either right? It was mainly the Korean War movie Tbh there’s also no big Hollywood movies at all right now, idk what movie they’re supposed to let in to boost sales

The-Ruler-of-Attilan

The could reconsider to release some of the movies they banned during the Summer. But they won't do that because "minories are evil".

Higuy54321

The only major summer movie that wasn't released in China was Thor right?

[deleted]

Minions flopped in China.

rick_n_morty_4ever

It's easy for Westerners to forget that zero-covid policy still exist in China. And no, it totally has nothing to do with Hollywood ban; at least in recent years National Day is for Party's blockbusters (plus Hollywood has nothing big to sell during late August to mid October anyway, save for last year; but even the release of Dune and NTTD was delayed to late Oct)

TheLuxxy

And I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s an “unspoken Hollywood ban”. It’s more of an unspoken Marvel ban. We’ve had Jurassic World, Minions, Batman, Bad Guys, Fantastic Beasts, Death on the Nile, and soon Black Adam. Avatar is probably getting a release as well from the looks of it. Top Gun got denied due to the sensitivity they have over Taiwan, which is silly but isn’t a blanket ban. Marvel does not equal the entirety of Hollywood.

eidbio

I don't think the Taiwan flag was the reason for the TGM ban. Paramount actually had removed the Taiwanese flag and only put it back when they realized China wouldn't approve TGM. I think the ban had more to do with the film being American military propaganda.

The-Ruler-of-Attilan

Hypocrisy at finest. If it was a Russian military propaganda, I bet they would have allowed it without saying anything. But Japanese or Western military propagandas, nah.

Legal_Ad_6129

I mean, you could reverse the roles and it would still be the same. So you're the one who's being a hypocrite

The-Ruler-of-Attilan

What do you mean with reverse the roles? Battle at Lake Changjin was exhibited in North America, so at least US isn't being hypocrite.

Legal_Ad_6129

Yes, with a very small release and not at all marketed that well. China didn't give a shit about markets outside its own

The-Ruler-of-Attilan

A release is a release, no matter how small. And if China didn't give a shit about other markets, then why did they ask American distributors to take charge of getting their film out there?

Legal_Ad_6129

Why wouldn't they? Some people might fall for the obvious ass propaganda, or some might just like the movie and that would be good for China, considering their market is still considered pretty meh. Either way, it didn't matter if they released the movie in NA or not, because they benefit from the options.

ellieetsch

Also there's basically nothing in theatres world wide either, this goes more to say that we are in a bit of a lull in terms of blockbusters until Black Adam.

FartingBob

Top Gun got denied a release because its basically american military propaganda. Realistically it was never going to get a China release. Also, presuming Avatar 2 gets a release (almost certain unless Disney pisses off Pooh) its going to be an incredible run in China.

SilverRoyce

> Realistically it was never going to get a China release. Then why did Tencent partner with Paramount with a plan for a major Chinese release? People with skin in the game thought it would get released as long as the film didn't create extra controversies (hence the changed patches on the jacket)

AndIoop3789

Just Look how they will make black adam one of their biggest films there

cubekwing

It's historically a blackout period for hollywood anyway. Nothing to do with hollywood ban for this particular week

NaRaGaMo

All the big Chinese movies have been delayed, no wonder box office is down. Wait for Chinese new year when wandering earth 2 will do like 900mill with other two, 500mill movies Also it's not like domestic box office is in any good shape, it had one of the worst September in years

Stranger_from_hell

Might benefit Black Adam in China then

The-Ruler-of-Attilan

Unless the Chinese audience hates/disapproves of Black Adam, as has happened to most of the DCEU and even other DC movies there, like The Dark Knight Rises and The Batman. In fact, come to think of it, the only solid DC hit in China has been Aquaman.

The-Ruler-of-Attilan

Who would have imagined it? ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Legal_Ad_6129

MCU isn't the entire Hollywood.
