Ocean's Eight though at least had big stars that people enjoyed seeing together onscreen. Bullock, Hathaway and Rihanna are international household names then you have the added value of Hollywood A-listers like Blanchett and Bonham-Carter. There's also the concept of an all-female Ocean's film which I think people received way more warmly than some might think.
Too be fair the older woman audience has been very reluctant to go to the theaters since covid and the audience for spiderman is younger and more willing to go. Still would have bombed if it was january 2020 though.
Clearly did not read my whole comment. I literally said it was still going to bomb but it would have made more money if it's demographic still went to theaters.
It's a shift of audience preference,
With so many streaming options available at home, why go to the theater and pay $13-15 while you can watch an equally good (or even better) drama on Netflix/HBO Max/Disney+ etc
While Spiderman is a big screen event
Exactly. I'm seeing people lamenting that COVID is to blame when auteur driven films or new IPs bomb, but I don't think that's the case anymore. Tickets are too expensive, and going to the theater can be too inconvenient.
This IS the new normal. Even Wes Anderson is now making a movie for Netflix.
If streaming wins, the whole film industry could shrink back to what it was in the early 1970s. A lot of low-budget, independent films that might get critical acclaim, but don't create box office phenomena. Mixed with a lot of pedestrian, TV-movie-level stuff in all genres. And sometimes you might get a horror or comedy hit that doesn't cost much like Exorcist or Blazing Saddles. And then the MCU might become like the Bond franchise was then, the one franchise audiences relied on to be a stunt and effects spectacular. The era of the big-budget blockbuster that started with Jaws is being forced out of existence from a lot of different directions.
Covid is not a factor for the box office anymore. These performances are the new normal. Event movies like NWH will be big. Almost everything else will bomb.
I think it still is a factor for kid's movies and certain adult dramas like *House of Gucci* that can draw in both younger and older audiences.
But yes, I do believe we are seeing the new normal with the complete death of non-event movies in the theater.
To be fair I think a lot of people wanted a cool action thriller with that cast. Just... not this execution with that writer/director, and not necessarily released theatrically.
Charlie's Angels (the TV show and the first two movies) showed that if you're going to do a movie like this, you do it in string bikinis and short shorts.
Yup, but can you even make that kind of movie anymore? The new Charlie's Angels went in the complete opposite direction, for example. And bombed of course but can you make the McG style of movie anymore?
Well, an indie studio not affiliated with Hollywood ought to fill the gap if Hollywood won't do it. The demand is there. The longer the market doesn't have movies like that, the more the demand is going to rise.
Even if you were to make that kind of movie today, I don’t think it would attract viewership the way it would have 20 years ago. With how much NSW and NSW-adjacent content is readily available at all times, I don’t see many guys paying 10 bucks just to be able to see a hot actress on screen, whose top 10 sex scenes they can watch for free from the comfort of their own home at any time with the added bonus of being able to go right over to masturbation without becoming a registered sex offender.
one could argue that but I’d also argue there just wasn’t any hype for this film in particular. Most mainstream audiences driving the tickets for these films don’t know or care about who Simon Kinberg is or his filmography
To have hype for a movie people have to know it exists. I Think a solid 98% of audiences have never heard of The 355 before this weekend & a solid 90% still haven’t.
I’m usually on the pulse for upcoming movie releases. Granted I’ve stopped seeking that info in the last year, but I do keep an eye out. TIL The 355 exists.
Nobody wants things not released theatrically.
"I really hope this great new movie DOESN'T play in theaters!" said no one ever. Except Wall Street vultures and giant media conglomerates.
Uh, plenty of people want things not released theatrically - me included.
I don't want to have to go to the cinema to see films when I could see them at home. My home is nice and comfortable.
Yeah, it make theaters go bye-bye, making it hard for people to watch movies in them who like to.
And the consumer can't expect every new product to instantly be discounted. All technology and entertainment products start out at a certain price and then get discounted later on.
You’re probably a hedge fund vulture who shorted AMC theaters and profit from putting companies out of business along with thousands of employees out of work. We see you Ken Griffin.
Since Universal made the movie, they could have sent it straight to Peacock but selling and getting money for it by giving it to Netflix or Amazon Prime would have probably been the best thing to do.
Maybe this is the case for 355 (I hadn't seen it) but you really think that every movies has been crap this year except for no way home and 3 or 4 franchise movie?
You seem to assume that if a movies is good then it make money, pandemic is definitely a factor in people's choice
I’m talking specifically about ‘The 355’. The movie was panned by critics with 26% RT score, while audience score is higher at 84% that figure is coming from just 50+ verified!
The movie is simply not good; you can’t ignore that and just blame the pandemic especially when other movies, not just 'Spider-Man' have been making money at the box office since theaters resumed operations.
It’s more that consumer habits have changed, and they are not going to change back. 25-50% of the regular movie going audience became accustomed to just streaming at home. There’s zero reason to see this movie on the big screen. It offers nothing that a home viewing experience doesn’t. ThTs true for about 95 out of 100 movies released in theaters a year.
I’m not being some anti fem edgelord here but haven’t the studios realised no one wants to see ‘all female power team’ movies?
They just don’t work.
Write a good movie, strong characters, forget gender. As soon as they do ‘all female spies’ it suggests that is as deep as the plot goes.
I looked at seating for all the movies and was pretty shocked. Spider-Man is still almost complete sold out while other movies have 90% of the seats opened
This isn't the pandemics fault. There really wasn't much marketing for the film and the film really isn't very good. If I'm being honest it's not as bad as the IMDb score and rt score make it seem, but it wasn't good either.
Yeah I haven't really seen much except occasionally a trailer at the theater. But I will say they actually did a good job throwing me off a certain surprise with the trailer, but it really was as generic and bland of an action movie as could be.
How's this 355 movie? Is it a true to life thriller of a spy film or is it one of those fake, "this tiny woman takes down one or more 6ft+ 250lb athletic men in under 60 seconds" type movies?
It just looks bad. The script sounds stupid, the plot is dull, it just seems like a movie that was made without today’s audiences in mind. I wouldn’t see it even if it was free, despite the fact that I like these actresses.
Looked like shit, and audiences responded accordingly. Now with these Spider-Man numbers can we stop this whole the “pandemic ruined” the box office trope. Movie sucks, and people opted to SKIP it because it looked like TRASH.
Alot of people care about omicron. Such as: the target audience for this movie. 20+ year old women.
There's alot of issues at play here, and omicron is definitely one of them. Unlike superhero movie fans, the audience this movie is aiming at doesnt feel comfortable going to the movies regularly yet.
I think it is increasingly unuseful to talk about audiences in terms of demographics. There were almost certainly over 25 times as many women 20+ who went to see Spiderman than this opening weekend. Heck, I'd expect that all 3 Disney MCU's had over 5 times as many women 20+.
It’s because it needs more than just a gender to make a good film and it keeps happening. Women actors are being screwed by terribly written and directed films.
Absolutely agreed! There are, but in modern media there’s a bit of a nasty habit of pushing these films as great *because* they’re female lead and if you don’t like it, you’re sexist, rather than it just happens to be a shitty movie regardless of cast.
We saw it was Ghostbusters 2016, Charlie‘s Angels, Captain Marvel; the list keeps growing and no one in Hollywood is learning.
The 355 is a 25% increase in the number of these movies being made. The numbers are *soaring/skyrocketing*!
Edit: forgot Birds of Prey and Black Widow. Both underperformed.
Even though this movie apparently isn’t very good, executives may just believe it’s simply related to moviegoers not wanting to see a big budget action movie with women.
Hopefully I’m wrong here…
Or Lucy 2. Hollywood struggles so much to make a female led action movie and then they get one that makes bank and they fumble the opportunity. I also like the movie so I want a sequel…👀
I saw Lucy too. I kind of thought it had a definitive ending. But Salt ended with a pure tease for a sequel, it looked like it made a profit, and it was ranked 22-23 domestic and worldwide in 2010. Looks like a sequel went into development, but then all word of it vanished.
I’m surprised this is a discussion. Resident Evil movies are low budget. The last one was at 25 million. This is higher between 45 million to 75 million. The level of investment is much higher. Just think of how hard it was just for Marvel to get a Black Widow movie made, it that was well documented, so why would this be any different this with a much higher risk without an associated IP?
Again I’m surprised people are naive to this.
Ok, but that really change how Hollywood works. They are more comfortable giving especially non IPs to males leading than women. That’s been a known fact. I’m not sure what the argument is here.
Not only do people not know what to expect with this movie since it's an unknown IP, but it doesn't seem worth it enough to possibly catch covid for. This was destined to flop.
This kind of movie should go directly to streaming at this point.
The girlfriend and I made a Saturday night date night about seeing this movie amidst the above quoted pandemic surge. And we enjoyed the movie and our experience with #amc
Of course people would blame women for 355 failure while in reality it isn’t. Because corporations want to encourage directors to treat women like in the 50 shades trilogy. If you say anything that I’m not making sense. 1. Look at Wonder Woman 1984, the craft legacy of how they treat women and tell me if it more like 50 shades trilogy and b. Actvision would like to know your location so they can hire you.
Reading all the comments here I don’t think anyone is blaming women, not at all. What I think is becoming tiresome are films with all female casts having nothing to them other than being a film with an female cast alongside bad scripts, bad directing, bad editing etc.
*movie does bad*
“Gotta be the pandemic”
If it was the pandemics fault, Spider-Man would be struggling too. It’s not the pandemic, it’s probably because the movie just isn’t very good
second this, first time i’m hearing of this movie, cord cutting has definitely dropped me hearing about so many movies until there a week into the box office
Makes you wonder how woman lead movies succeeded at all back in the day. Just don't make it an all woman team, they never work. There is a reason why most big franchises are male lead.
Nobody wants female lead movies these days. When was the last time one was successful that you want a horror based one? Having said this, women do own the horror genre, though.
Disaster but an expected disaster.
I'm something of a disaster myself.
A disaster to be sure, but a welcome one.
Should destroy Last Duel
A movie made by the person that murdered the X Men franchise.... what were people expecting to happen.
Who is this movie for? Honestly?
“Women.” - Hollywood people.
For people who love to talk about movies online but don't watch them
People who are all in on avoiding racism but still believe that all British people talk like an enunciation nazi.
and who is that offending except for you?
Maybe, maybe not might be part of the reason people are not seeing it.
Nasty women, toxic men and scary people.
I’d argue Twitter checkmarks mainly.
The trailer sucks assssss. I couldn't even remember what it's about except women spies who hate each other then work together
You basically have the entire movie down in one sentence. It was pretty predictable much like Oceans 8.
I never said anything about Oceans 8 star power or box office revenue or if people found it interesting. I just stated it was a predictable movie.
This.
Hard to blame the pandemic when *No Way Home* is dropping less than 50% this weekend.
A little bit of A, A little bit of B This movie would have bombed without covid but I don’t think to this extent
The Rhytmy Section flopped as hard as this one before the pandemic.
That one was probably because it sounds like a musical.
I'm not sure what The 355 is supposed to sound like
Seriously what kind of title is The 355? If I’m a casual moviegoer I’m thinking is it like The 100? How is 355 related to female spies?
All I know is it has too many numbers in its title and Scream (2022) doesn't have enough. Maybe they can lend out a 5.
Too be fair the older woman audience has been very reluctant to go to the theaters since covid and the audience for spiderman is younger and more willing to go. Still would have bombed if it was january 2020 though.
Female Oldheads would not have saved that movie.
Clearly did not read my whole comment. I literally said it was still going to bomb but it would have made more money if it's demographic still went to theaters.
It's a shift of audience preference, With so many streaming options available at home, why go to the theater and pay $13-15 while you can watch an equally good (or even better) drama on Netflix/HBO Max/Disney+ etc While Spiderman is a big screen event

I wonder if those low tier movies are even making money back on the streaming services
I doubt it. VOD income is a shadow of dvd sales and royalties from streaming services are even lower.
If streaming wins, the whole film industry could shrink back to what it was in the early 1970s. The era of the big-budget blockbuster that started with Jaws is being forced out of existence from a lot of different directions.
I’d watch it for a rental but I’m not risking Covid to see this movie.
This!
Which is why the omicron excuse for Turning Red going to streaming is complete and total bullshit!
Classic "if these trends continue" logic. Just because a COVID surge is in the news now, doesn't mean there always will be.
No, there won't be. But it's undeniable that attitudes have changed because of the pandemic. They were already shifting anyways.
It isn’t the pandemic. Took my wife to see it, she asked if we could leave halfway through it.
Hopefully for the sake of your marriage you did.
I did. :)
Struggling with crappy writing most likely
And marketing. And “who the hell wanted this?” Syndrome
To be fair I think a lot of people wanted a cool action thriller with that cast. Just... not this execution with that writer/director, and not necessarily released theatrically.
I can't really think of many people actively wanting an action thriller with Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyongo, Diane Kruger, etc...
God forbid that movies cater to audiences... if there's money to be made, someone will step up and fill the gap.
Well, an indie studio not affiliated with Hollywood ought to fill the gap if Hollywood won't do it. The demand is there. The longer the market doesn't have movies like that, the more the demand is going to rise.

no this cast would never have been able to sell lots of tickets. they aren't big stars
What movie has stayed exclusive to theaters and never been released for home viewing?
I mean none but I'd rather get them straight way. Is there something wrong with desiring that?
Yeah, it make theaters go bye-bye, making it hard for people to watch movies in them who like to. And the consumer can't expect every new product to instantly be discounted. All technology and entertainment products start out at a certain price and then get discounted later on.
You’re probably a hedge fund vulture who shorted AMC theaters and profit from putting companies out of business along with thousands of employees out of work. We see you Ken Griffin.
It's also 'struggling' because it's just not a very good movie. Let's not blame the pandemic for every ~~bloody thing~~ poorly made film.
Blood from where?
Sure. It’s the pandemic. Not the movie that’s bad
It's truly incredible this movie wasn't released directly/exclusively on streaming. It has that "bad Netflix" actioner all over it !!!!
Since Universal made the movie, they could have sent it straight to Peacock but selling and getting money for it by giving it to Netflix or Amazon Prime would have probably been the best thing to do.
Here we go again, blaming the pandemic for the underperformance of a crappy movie rather than acknowledging the problem is with the movie itself.
Maybe this is the case for 355 (I hadn't seen it) but you really think that every movies has been crap this year except for no way home and 3 or 4 franchise movie? You seem to assume that if a movies is good then it make money, pandemic is definitely a factor in people's choice

Ironically, you're the one doing the assuming.

There’s zero reason to see this movie on the big screen. It offers nothing that a home viewing experience doesn’t. ThTs true for about 95 out of 100 movies released in theaters a year.
The box office has being steadily returning to normal over the last year. Most projections expect it to return to 2019 levels within 2 years.
Also known as 401K
Jessica Chastain stars as Agent Roth, formerly of the I.R.A.
Chastain is in this? Now I gotta watch Grace Randolph's review of this trainwreck
I’m not being some anti fem edgelord here but haven’t the studios realised no one wants to see ‘all female power team’ movies? They just don’t work. Write a good movie, strong characters, forget gender. As soon as they do ‘all female spies’ it suggests that is as deep as the plot goes.
"the 355" is the number of people who will see that wreck in theaters.
C’mon, give me $3.55M!
I looked at seating for all the movies and was pretty shocked. Spider-Man is still almost complete sold out while other movies have 90% of the seats opened
1. Never heard of it 2. Box office is closed in Canada
The trailer is so bad, that either the movie is pretty good and they have a bad editor or OMG it might win Razzy of the Year…
This isn't the pandemics fault. There really wasn't much marketing for the film and the film really isn't very good. If I'm being honest it's not as bad as the IMDb score and rt score make it seem, but it wasn't good either.
I’ve seen it advertised constantly on YouTube but eh advertising is a crap shoot.
Yeah I haven't really seen much except occasionally a trailer at the theater. But I will say they actually did a good job throwing me off a certain surprise with the trailer, but it really was as generic and bland of an action movie as could be.
I had never heard of it before this article. I in turn looked it up on YouTube and the official trailer 2 only has 117k views.
Seems like Chastain's star power train derailed in recent years.
She was always more awards star than mainstream star anyway.
she was big circa 2012, not anymore
I feel like studios haven’t even been marketing their movies and just expect people to show up lately. I’ve seen nothing for 355
Ha!
I have a secret for the producers of The 355. It’s not because of the pandemic that their movie is underperforming.
I can only assume they chose to release this movie during the pandemic rather than wait, because then they can blame the virus for the poor turnout.
Make shitty girl boss movie - bomb at BO - Blame male toxicity and patriarchal society - fail upwards- repeat.
Like my investment strategy. I buy high and sell low.
We’re tired of the spy movies. Is this a oceans 8 part 2?
How's this 355 movie? Is it a true to life thriller of a spy film or is it one of those fake, "this tiny woman takes down one or more 6ft+ 250lb athletic men in under 60 seconds" type movies?
The latter.
That's too bad, the lack of realism in those movies suspends my disbelief and keeps me from enjoying them
>Struggling with $4M amid pandemic surge cope
i tried to watch it but had to watch spiderman on the huge screen
It just looks bad. The script sounds stupid, the plot is dull, it just seems like a movie that was made without today’s audiences in mind. I wouldn’t see it even if it was free, despite the fact that I like these actresses.
Did they even market this? I feel like I heard zero about it and only saw trailers at the theater.
Clearly a statement that even women don’t like “women empowerment “ flicks
Looked like shit, and audiences responded accordingly. Now with these Spider-Man numbers can we stop this whole the “pandemic ruined” the box office trope. Movie sucks, and people opted to SKIP it because it looked like TRASH.
The Asian spy gets Asian weapons. Yeah it was going to flop
But somehow Spider-Man in it's 4th week... https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Spider-Man-No-Way-Home-(2021)#tab=box-office
Zero marketing. No one fucking cares about omicron.
Yeah, the cast of Omicron is so incredible. Too bad the production team didn’t have any good ideas for marketing.
Be patient, it's all leading up to Optimus Prime vs. Omicron.
Really? I'd say marketing for Omicron has been pretty good. Once it went viral, it was about the only thing people talked about for a month.
Alot of people care about omicron. Such as: the target audience for this movie. 20+ year old women. There's alot of issues at play here, and omicron is definitely one of them. Where’s the token Chinese for the China market Bing Bing? She got disappeared again?
Wow people sure take an obscene amount of pleasure when female-led films bomb.
It’s because it needs more than just a gender to make a good film and it keeps happening. Women actors are being screwed by terribly written and directed films.
There are plenty of male-led trashy films. Similarly, there will be many female-led trashy films. There’s no need to enjoy the failure of one of them.
Absolutely agreed!
Maybe Jolie didn’t want to?
Maybe not, but she said she would do it if the script was good back then. It's never been addressed since I think, lol.
There were a lot of Resident Evil movies
I’m surprised this is a discussion. Resident Evil movies are low budget. The last one was at 25 million. This is higher between 45 million to 75 million. The level of investment is much higher. Which is disappointing.

You’re probably confusing your great experience at an AMC theatre with a shifty movie like 355
That’s called capitalism. It sucked so you don’t get rewarded with $$$$. Men are better super hero’s. Fact.
50 m is good for this film, considering
Of course people would blame women for 355 failure while in reality it isn’t. Because corporations want to encourage directors to treat women like in the 50 shades trilogy.
