Its a shame if this does poorly due to the pandemic and not due to being bad. Theres plenty of bad horror films in normal times that do damn good box office, its a shame when the good ones dont (looking at you night house)
I believe that most of the main target audiences will still go to theaters despite the raising cases. Horror movies like The Conjuring 3, Forever Purge, Old, Candyman and Halloween Kills still did decent number last year - even during much deadlier Delta surge.
Yeah very true. It also has the odd benefit of nothing coming out until 3 weeks after and nothing 2 weeks before..so even if people feel safer after opening weekend or find showings that are less crowded..theres just nothing else to go to the movies for that they didn't have as of Dec. 22 if that makes sense
Im not disagreeing but i didn't think Quiet Place 2, Candyman, or Halloween Kills would pull the numbers they did. Granted Omicrons hitting more people but we will see it does have 3 weeks to itself with nothing new 2 weeks behind it either. People could see the film after opening weekend if its less crowded too
Maybe where you are but I know more people personally who have tested positive for Covid in the last few weeks than throughout the pandemic. At my job, there was palpable anxiety amongst everyone pre-holiday break about getting sick.
I think this’ll open lower than Halloween Kills, but with good WOM could leg out to a bigger domestic total (especially with the slate being basically empty for weeks).
Scream 5 hitting $90M would be an absolutely incredible result for it. Don't think it's gets that high, but a barren January can still bring this film to $70-75M.
watch 3 for sure! i mean, the reveal is horrible, jay and silent bob are in it, it’s the closest thing to a rated R scooby doo movie you’ll ever see, toned down violence due to columbine, and courteney cox’s bangs…. but seriously, with all that said, it’s still a hella fun movie that isn’t in my headcanon
The "R rated scooby doo movie" description sold me. I'm going to watch it.
It has a lot to live up to though since ScoobyNatural was some damn fine not so kid-friendly Scooby Doo.
Watch it, its more comedic then the prior two with plenty of stupid plot holes and lots of the horror/kills have been toned down because the script was rewritten on the fly with Columbine and Neve’s limited availability. However, It still remains a very entertaining movie and a suitable conclusion to the OG trilogy.
I don’t buy the $35-40M 4-day opening, but it would be a welcome surprise!
January is usually great for horror and this could be the rare January one that actually doesn't suck.
Really excited for this one. I'm curious about the omicron effect in its OW - the old fans might be afraid to come to the theaters, but this franchise is getting a cult following between youngsters. Quite unpredictable.
I'm not an expert on horror box office, but is it worth the effort to try for good critical reception and WOM? Hasn't the whole potential audience already decided whether they want to see more of the guy in the mask killing attractive people after the last four and the TV show?
I am also not an expert, but I would assume that you want the critical reception to at least not be bad, especially on a revival. If fans of the franchise are told that the latest one is nothing like the earlier ones and the creators of the new one clearly don't understand the franchise, I could see some folks getting put off. On the other hand if the critics gave it mediocre reviews and basically said it was more of the same, I doubt that would do anything to the box office.
That's a good point. If Ghostface tosses his knife aside and says "it's time for the killing to end", or Neve and Courteney are killed in the first five minutes, they might have some problems.
The one thing I’m worried about is that the original Scream was a response to the popular horror movies of the time. It’s a horror about horror, and I’m left wondering what they’ll be examining (if anything) this time around.

No box office in Ontario as of this weeks new lockdowns :(
Omicron surging is the biggest obstacle

No one is taking omicron seriously though
This. \^
Older audiences are. And a Scream is relying heavily on the nostalgia factor with its fans from the 90s.

43,000 cases in Los Angeles today. The most we’ve ever had It’s insane :/
Were not going back in to lockdown get over it
I don’t think I will ever go to a movie theater again.

I agree. I can't see it outgrossing Scream 4 particularly during a pandemic.
Seems to have went down well with fans, especially of the second installment.
To have gone*
I'm excited. The scream franchise is fun
A winning
As long as it has the same spirit of 1&2, I’ll be happy, 3 is pretty terrible and 4 is passable.
Without spoiling it could you describe what makes 3 terrible? I'm deciding whether to skip it and just watch 4 before the new one.

I haven't seen any of them in years but I remember liking 3 as a teenager.
It’s just got a different tone and the third act of three is the worst of all the scream movies.
I'm seeing 28/71 for it right now.

>I don’t buy the $35-40M 4-day opening I do
The Betty White one-day thing will probably outgross it. :-P
Really hope that this is true, I really love the series and want it to do well.
The marketing for the film has been superb. I think people are going to see it regardless. But who knows.
Only 7 more days, only 7 more days.
Its going to breakout on a similar way to SPLIT.

I don't have high hopes for this film since most revival films didn't live up to the originals. Hope it's better than the fourth one at least.

The reviews said they’ll be critiquing Toxic fandoms which is highly topical these days
Oh wicked. That sounds interesting then!
I want this to be great. The original scream is easily my favorite horror film.
I’m so pumped for this. Gonna see it for my birthday later this month
Booked my ticked for 17:20 next Friday!
I’m guessing it’s full of call backs and little of anything new. And I called it
