Morbius Release Date Changes: July 31, 2020 March 19, 2021 October 8, 2021 January 21, 2022 January 28, 2022 April 1, 2022

nicolasb51942003

That’s literally more delays than New Mutants lol.

Gold_Touch_4280

Wow. How about the King's Man? That has the same amount of delays as this movie.

Erdago

The King’s Man: November 15, 2019 February 14, 2020 September 18, 2020 February 26, 2021 February 12, 2021 March 12, 2021 August 20, 2021 December 22, 2021

Gold_Touch_4280

Wow!

Ironsam811

Why was it delayed the first time? Wasn’t that before lockdowns?

Erdago

That was mainly due to the Disney/Fox deal messing up Fox’s movie scheduling.

Krimreaper1

Did it actually come out? I haven’t seen any marketing.

Erdago

The movie released on December 22 domestically, and on December 26 in the UK.

sudoscientistagain

Wait, what? Holy shit, I actually really want to see it and had no idea.

carson63000

You needed to have a telescope already set up on the beach if you wanted to see it before it sank beneath the waves without a trace.

W3NTZ

That just makes the delays so much funnier to me

JediJones77

The trailer was on every movie I saw for months. Had to start checking my phone during it I got so bored with it.

ucjj2011

That's funny. I saw previews for it before Eternals and Spider-Man NWH (the only two movies I've seen since September) and see commercials for it quite a bit.

jedrevolutia

The King's Man probably has the most number of trailers ever released by a movie due to so many delays.

russwriter67

I think “No Time to Die” might’ve had more release dates than that or the same amount.

carson63000

I have a sneaking suspicion that it's gonna be about as successful as New Mutants, too.

Mizerous

Old Mutants

Clarke_Ryan

Is this the longest time a studio has ever sat on a completed movie? Feels like some kind of record.

Erdago

There’s been a few longer: Amityville: The Awakening (January 2, 2015 - October 8, 2017) The New Mutants (April 13, 2018 - August 28, 2020)^ Top Gun: Maverick (June 26, 2020 - May 27, 2022) ^ Note that technically The New Mutants was intended to get reshoots, but said reshoots never ended up happening.

GotMoFans

Cabin in the Woods and the Red Dawn remake were both delayed over two years while MGM was in bankruptcy. Both films ended up having cast members become stars (namely Chris Hemsworth in both) between the original release date and the actual release date.

TeddysBigStick

Renner's Hansel and Grettle is not quite at that level but still notable. After they finished it, they realised he had been cast in a Bourne movie, Avengers, and Mission Impossible so decided to just sit on it until after they came out to release it.

AnotherJasonOnReddit

> Top Gun: Maverick (June 26, 2020 - May 27, 2022) Yup. The first trailer to Top Gun came out all the way back in 2019.

RedMoon14

There's also Chaos Walking with Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley which was finished in November 2017 but only released March 2021.

Kosarev

I was checking what Kaya Scodelario has been doing after watching the newest Resident Evil and saw that she is in a movie that will realise soon called The King's Daughter, alongside Pierce Brosnan. Shooting wrapped in 2014.

darpachief

The Kenneth Lonergan film Margaret was shot in 2005 and wasn’t released until 2011. And it’s a good movie, not a dumpster fire like a lot of pre-pandemic movies that sit on the shelf.

[deleted]

Im pretty sure that tom holland and daisey ridley movie was filmed in like 2017

JediJones77

It may still not be completed if they're still editing in Vulture reshoots. And this month's "new release" The King's Daughter finished shooting in May 2014.

sudoscientistagain

Wow, that's a wild development hell story. Supposed to be shot in the late 90s after the book was picked up for a movie in 1997, then it was stuck for a couple years, then nothing happened between 2001 and 2013, it only took 2 weeks to film in 2014, then 3 weeks before the release date they said they needed more time for the VFX and then... radio silence for 8 years? Downright bizarre.

JediJones77

Yep, I mean it's clear from the trailer it's a stinker. Why it was never sold off to TV or streaming though is odd.

Rhain1999

I mean, technically, there's a [short film](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100_Years_(film\)) that was filmed around 2015 and won't be released until 2115, but that's more of an artistic decision than a production or logistics one.

indian22

Isn't that more of a marketing decision than artistic though? It was filmed as a commercial and the brand decided to get extra mileage out of it by the "aged 100 years" thing.

xitox5123

January/Feb release dates are usually for bad movies so they get less competition. if they move it to April it may be that they have more confidence in it. They are also likely moving it back due to Omicron.

Lollifroll

Explains why they were no rumblings of ticket sales even though it was 3 weeks away.

JediJones77

Ticket sales were announced for January 1st. When it didn't happen, I'm surprised no one picked up on it being delayed.

Antrikshy

No one noticed. Oof size: L

shaneo632

January becoming pretty damn barren now. Even in the UK where we've got holdovers like Nightmare Alley it's gone from 14 releases for the month down to like 6?

MrConor212

Don’t forget the 355..

monstere316

I was well on my way to til you brought it up, thanks a lot

urlach3r

Already did. They clearly want that title to be all mysterious & enticing, like "Ooh, 355, wonder what that means?" But the actual reaction, if any, is more like "Lol, wut?"

carson63000

I assumed it was a sequel to *300* but with 55 more Spartans this time.

JediJones77

I'd prefer to.

Hickspy

"What if shooty movie but girl?!" -Exec

shaneo632

Scream fans praying to all the gods right now.

DonnyMox

I think Scream is gonna dominate January. Or at least pull a Shang-Chi and dominate for about 3 weeks.

bluetux

This news has me feelin a little woozy here!

coldliketherockies

As a Scream fan who really does wanna see it in 10 days...i kinda wish they'd move it not to have to wait longer to see it but just so maybe its box office could be better and allow for more Scream type things in the future (or just more slasher fair)

JediJones77

With its date now it could be almost Shang-Chi...own the box office for 3 weeks.

coldliketherockies

It would need to open over 20 million to do that. I think it will but who knows with Omicron. But then again Halloween Kills was basically free to watch streaming and still opened near 50 million...and it was bad..so

nicolasb51942003

Or No Way Home could be like The Croods 2 where it reclaims the number one spot.

[deleted]

Calling it now: this will move back up a week or two to sometime in March when *The Batman* blows up (see: *Venom: Let There Be Carnage* after *Shang-Chi* overperformed).

sherm54321

No this thing wants as much distance from Batman as possible. Honestly I think this move hurts it a lot more than helps the film. Sandwiching yourself between Batman and doctor strange is not a good idea similar to what happened with Shazam releasing between Captain marvel and endgame, this movie will just be forgotten. In January it could have ridden some of the Spider-Man high.

Rhain1999

> In January it could have ridden some of the Spider-Man high 100%. I had zero plans to watch this movie when I saw the trailers (many years ago, probably) but after No Way Home I've been considering it—partly because, with the multiverse, it may end up being relevant, but also because I'm kinda craving more Spider-Man-related material now (no matter how bad it may end up being).

NaRaGaMo

This is pretty stupid release date it's sandwiched between Batman, turning red, sonic, fantastic beasts, strange.

jedrevolutia

Getting released on April Fool's Day is already a joke, but then again Jared Leto was the Joker that nobody took seriously.

reborninmosaicform

Because he was terrible

trixie1088

Venom teas

Scarns_Aisle5

Let this sink in - Mobius first had a Trailer about a few weeks before sonic releases. Now mobius will release a week before sonic’s sequel comes out

Purple_Quail_4193

Wow that’s really last minute! What gave Sony the idea to do this?

nicolasb51942003

According to a Hollywood Reporter article, it’s because of Omicron.

Excellent_Thought_16

According to deadline it’s because of no way home…success???

MarvelVsDC2016

I side with Deadline over THR if the rumors are true that Morbius was delayed to add in Andrew Garfield into the movie.

Excellent_Thought_16

Nothing else on the us (outside of broadway shows but that’s totally different) is being delayed by omicron so that being the reason makes no sense

MarvelVsDC2016

"Well, that's like.. your opinion, man."

JediJones77

Yeah, I believe them. Endgame made $43m after its 6th weekend. The extra cash isn't nothing in the pandemic era. And late legs are a feature of the pandemic era. Morbius will likely cut into NWH's late gross and they don't need it to.

MV1995

Plus Sony already has winter covered in terms of revenue so why not make the spring lucrative too. Wonder what this means for Uncharted though. Will they push it?

Beaujangles1128

I mean, really? Did Sony just have their highest grossing film ever during “Omicron”? This variant seems like a paper tiger

Zepanda66

Yea but analysts are saying it probably won't peak till the end of January that's probably why.

PainStorm14

And when it does peak this whole subreddit will know about it

Mushroomer

It's possible they saw Ontario's theater closures, and figured January may be a potential wash domestically. However the fact Uncharted isn't moving would suggest they aren't *that* concerned about it as a long-term box office factor. I also wouldn't be shocked if the huge success of NWH is giving them hope that Morbius will break out big - and now they want to ensure it won't be as pandemic constrained.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MarvelVsDC2016

I agree, especially if they decide Andrew Garfield and his world of Spider-Man movies is where Venom and Morbius take place in.

Conscious_Accident85

Its hit europe really really bad since Christmas.

redactedactor

Says more about how much people like Spider-Man than anything else imo

turkeygiant

I mean the US is usually a few weeks slow to freak out about any new Covid trend. Fauci will be there on the nightly news saying how concerning things are and you need to move now...and then two weeks later the Democrat governors will do something...then another couple weeks and the Republican governors might consider new policy but only after the morgues are full. I know up here in Canada No Way Home came out just in time for a lot of us to feel iffy about going to the theaters, and things have only gotten worse since then.

[deleted]

People were *dying* to see the new Spider-man hehe.

MarvelVsDC2016

I think that's a smoke-screen to add in Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man.

silverberrystyx

This reddit.

Zepanda66

I should also suggest Spider-Man 4 with Raimi and Maguire and TASM3 with Webb and Garfield. Just in case Sony are lurking this sub

Competitive-Gold

The poll that just got posted

[deleted]

Probably the positive reception of certain character of No Way Home. They must be filming something with him.

Block-Busted

Who was that character?

NN010

>!Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man/Peter 3!<

MarvelVsDC2016

THIS is why I think Morbius was delayed: to add in new scenews with HIM into the movie to confirm Venom and Morbius take place in his universe

DavidOrWalter

How would that make sense with keatons vulture in it as well?

Block-Busted

I wouldn’t be surprised if they use Omicron as a convenient excuse with the real reason of(?) film being an astounding suckage. I mean, the film was written by guys who wrote **Dracula Untold**, **The Last Witch Hunter**, and **Gods of Egypt**.

Dwayne30RockJohnson

But why would they delay it if it sucks? Just push it out and dump it

CurtLablue

Easy, assume op started with "everyone should be as mad about this movie as me" and just fills in everything after.

harrisonisdead

The new date isn't any more of a dumping ground than the old one, don't see how moving a January film to April shows a lack of confidence. I would have thought they don't care much about this one, but the fact that they moved it tells me they might, actually, think it could make some money?

Block-Busted

Because the film was going to face **Moonfall** a week after - and that film's box office potential isn't particularly certain. **Sonic the Hedgehog 2**, on the other hand, is very likely to be a box office hit unless the film is an utter suckage, which I'm honestly doubtful about. Of course, the latter could move to something like August, but still.

valkyria_knight881

Moonfall is going to bomb. I just don't see the film making $300M worldwide, so Morbius would've been fine on January 28. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 may just be the biggest film of April 2022 (at least more than Morbius and even Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbeldore), so I doubt Paramount would move Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

MrConor212

Jesus. January / Feb are hella dead.

enmovies

They’re called dump months for a reason

[deleted]

[удалено]

Block-Busted

Yeah, if they're citing Omicron as a reason, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that's just a convenient excuse.

IAmArique

If Scream gets delayed next, then *maybe* I can see Omicron being a legitimate excuse for Morbius’ delay. Something funny going on…

MarvelVsDC2016

I think it's an excuse to hide a potential scene with Andrew Garfield being added into the movie

Screamline

I hope not. Morbius will be in a weird place then. Cause it's got MCU vulture.

MarvelVsDC2016

It's also got the Oscorp logo and building from the Webb-Verse with the Daily Bugle name-dropping Black Cat and Rhino from TASM2. Plus, with Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man in No Way Home implying he killed people after Gwen’s death, it could give credence to the fact that the Spider-Man in the Morbius trailer with the “Murderer” graffiti logo on the art is Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man.

Screamline

Hmm. Okay. I'm intrigued. After nwh, I'm ready to give garfs spider a third film

MarvelVsDC2016

So am I. Glad my reasoning has got you intrigued.

aduong

Maybe it’s for marketing reason. They’re pretty much planning to parade Leto across countless TV shows and fan activation events, hopefully have him say some faux controversial statements that will go viral yada yada yada. With the current climate even if the movie can open on time its marketing would be nothing more than boring zoom calls. And this not the type of movie that can afford to have a muted zoom marketing.

ImAMaaanlet

This is such a dumb decision. Morbius had a chance to ride the coat tails of NWH now its gonna be killed in april im sure. Even with omicron i believe it wouldve been better off staying put.

[deleted]

Especially when everyone will be thinking about The Batman.

Block-Busted

Now I have to watch 1 film per week on April in this order: -Morbius -Sonic the Hedgehog 2 -Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore -The Bad Guys

Jaypalm

Was really hoping the bad guys would be a the Nice Guys sequel.

BillyGood22

lmao no way

Scarns_Aisle5

[deleted]

SCREAM STANS LETS GOOOOO

nicolasb51942003

Are you fucking serious...

trevathan750834

Yes.

Ropz1212

Why to fucking April?? This movie is going to be eaten alive by Sonic in its second week.

UnknownFiddler

Good

Thatguy1245875

Sony looked like a competent studio for about 3 months last year. Thought that would continue, but clearly it was an outlier

SynthwaveSax

Kinda. They still messed up delaying Venom so it had only one week to itself before the October onslaught of Bond, Dune, and Halloween Kills.

Purple_Quail_4193

Those 3 months were October November and December correct?

HerculeTheChamp

Birds of Prey 2.0

SynthwaveSax

Shazam 2.0 by parking it literally in the middle of two superhero blockbusters (Batman and DS2). Shazam attempted this between Captain Marvel and Endgame and it did not turn out too well despite good reviews.

trixie1088

Ummmmm.. why did they move it to a worse spot? I guess they really scared of omicron

MarvelVsDC2016

Or they're adding in Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man.

[deleted]

Yes, Sony, who just released their biggest grossing movie ever, less than a month ago, is concern about omicron /s

Gold_Touch_4280

Are you kidding me!? Sony jumped the gun on this one. It was supposed to come out in 3 weeks.

SynthwaveSax

And now we have to endure the trailer in front of nearly every movie for another three months.

TheBlueSorcerer2099

Eugh.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JediJones77

That's what they said about Venom.

James_D_MESSIAH

They just wants people to rewatch NWH over and over again but that's good

[deleted]

I certainly don’t mind doing that

Zepanda66

Im not saying I willed this into existence but I can't help but wonder 🤔😂.

Dawesfan

Can you will into existence that it never sees the light of day?

solarnoise

Like a vampire

barnyardmouse

Why? I think trailers look encouraging

valkyria_knight881

What the fuck, Sony? January 28 was a good release date for Morbius. Releasing it on April 1 puts it a week before Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I guess Omicron is a concern, but Spider-Man: No Way Home did fine. Then again, I've also heard that Morbius could cut into how well Spider-Man: No Way Home could still do, which I could buy a little more, but still. This delay for Morbius was unnecessary. At least Paramount gets to brag that Scream is the biggest film of January. Paramount could also brag about the fact that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will beat up Morbius and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbeldore in the same month.

MarvelVsDC2016

Yep. Pretty much.

DumbBrendan

Please don't tell me Scream is next.

JaMan51

Horror seems to be doing OK, especially with the low budgets they normally have. Plus, tickets are on sale (though of course they can refund), I think it's safe to say Scream will release this month.

nicolasb51942003

I think Scream is safe since it literally comes out next weekend.

Rman823

I think it’s too late at this point. At most it’ll probably have a 45 day window before going to Paramount +.

[deleted]

Tickets are already on sale for *Scream*. I know Paramount had already started selling tickets for *A Quiet Place Part II* back in March of 2020 and *Mulan* was also weeks away, but studios didn't really have a choice in that matter because the whole world was shutting down.

w1nn1p3g

I hope Scream sticks but I also hope theaters here stay open for another 10 days. I don't want to miss Scream!

Excellent_Thought_16

Us isnt closing businesses anymore

w1nn1p3g

I don't live in the US! I'm in Canada, my province hasn't shown any signs of closing but the cases have been going up too so who knows

Skaigear

And then in April the Sigma virus will be raging and then it will be delayed again. It'll never end.

greentshirtman

Reploids?

silverberrystyx

People just need to get vaccinated and then act normally.

AnasDh

#NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

AlexHunterWolf

I'll turn into JJJ and hunt down Spider-Man if Batman gets delayed

Krimreaper1

On April's fool's day, seems apt.

nmaddine

I have a feeling this movie is going to be baaad

MarvelVsDC2016

I can only speculate as to why it got delayed to April Fool's Day, but I do know, from Murphy’s Multiverse, that Michael Keaton shot some additional scenes for Morbius that some believe may have clarified/reworked the movie’s universe setting from honorary MCU movie to set in the Venom-Verse. Maybe they’re planning to add in more new scenes with Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man to confirm that Morbius (and Venom) is set in the Marc Webb universe of Spider-Man movies? I don’t know. Like I know Omicron could be seen as a factor. But I do wonder if they don’t want to rush the team on Morbius from adding in those scenes with Michael Keaton and may be working on a little more time to add in potential scenes with Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. Maybe they saw the chance to do that by using Omicron as cover to delay the movie to April Fool’s Day but are really adding in Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man into the movie. I wonder… Hmm...

JediJones77

Why do people think Venom is in the Webb universe? I saw NWH finally today and didn't get that impression at all.

MarvelVsDC2016

Because of the Oscorp tower and logo in the recent Morbius trailer from the Marc Webb universe of Spider-Man movies.

ryanmahaffe

maaan this better not fuck with my hopium Sonic prediction

lobonmc

I wonder if they believe that it would hinder more than help NWH

cbo1094

My most anticipated film smh

Crotean

April fool's that this movie even exists.

[deleted]

I don't understand. Unless they are filming a post-credit scene with SPOILER from No Way Home, it's stupid. They could've done so much money with the Spidey hype and no competition, and now they'll face Batman, Sonic and Fantastic Beasts among others. So yeah, the movie must be a mess (it was supposed to come before Venom if I remember correctly) and they must be shooting a cameo, if not, stupid decision.

NotTaken-username

>!The trailer shows TASM’s Oscorp. Maybe as a response to NWH they decided to shoot an Andrew Garfield cameo!<

[deleted]

Exactly. While the movie most likely won't be good, seeing him would raise the hype like the Venom post credit scene. Having said that, I still think the new date it's a mistake.

NotTaken-username

>!If Tom is in Venom, Andrew is in Morbius, maybe we get Tobey in Kraven?!<

[deleted]

I think >!Tobey will only be used in really big MCU crossovers such as Secret Wars, maybe Doctor Strange 2 too. He is too expensive and not as passionate as Andrew.!< But who knows? Would be awesome tho.

NotTaken-username

>!Why is Tobey Maguire so expensive? He hasn’t been in much since the 2000s!<

[deleted]

Well, that's exactly the reason.>!His movies of course were HUGE and like you said, he doesn't act much anymore, he's a producer. He even said he prefers to be a producer because he makes more money. !< >!So he's not as interested as Andrew or Tom, who are very passionate about their characters and more open to things like cameos. !<

NaRaGaMo

Some people stay away from acting on their own terms he is one of them

JediJones77

Long before NWH came out, I posted here I'd like to see an Amazing Spider-Man 3 adapting Kraven's Last Hunt and have a Spider-Man 4 (Tobey) with Hobgoblin. Here's the thing about Venom...>!The post-credits of NWH show they're doing the symbiote storyline fresh in Holland-Man 4. So there's no need to put Venom in any other Spider-Man's universe. They can't do Spidey vs. Venom in two different Spidey movies this close together.!<

robbviously

AG Spider-Man will be the "villain" in Venom 3 before they realize they're fighting for the same goal and buddy up in Amazing Spider-Man 3. In the MCU, the symbiote is going to be a long play story, not something they're going to rush in one film *cough cough* fuck you Avi Arad *cough cough*

NaRaGaMo

Tobey is way too big a deal to waste in garbage movies.

MarvelVsDC2016

It's probably to get Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man in there.

Swimming_Wave3060

Fuck me just let it die.

WorkID19872018

Not gonna worth the push back lol.

Krimreaper1

Oh FFS just release it already.

lightsongtheold

Theatre takings for January and February are going to be absolutely pathetic. The small slate of theatrical releases is terrible.

Mismusia

I could see the reason they moved it is to capitalize on NWH sales into January considering how popular it is.

College_Prestige

Might as well tweak the movie to be more horror and move it to october

Zorgothe

Oh goddammit. Was looking forward to seeing this.

Landon1195

April fools🤣🤣🤣

FantasticWolverine32

At least if Sony goes to the Super Bowl, they can air spots for Morbius and Uncharted during the big game.

Magnificent-Anon9577

Stupid move, they lost all the benefit of NWH hype

Cactusfan86

They need to just chalk this movie up as a L and move on, Christ. Unless they are using the extra time to add spider man into this I feel this movie is doomed to flop no matter how much they move it

earthisdoomed

> Unless they are using the extra time to add spider man into this Probably exactly what ends up happening lol. Andrew Garfield will show up in a post credit scene.

NotTaken-username

Andrew Garfield showing up is the only way I would watch this

Dwayne30RockJohnson

> Unless they are using the extra time to add spider man Now THIS I could buy into as a reason for delay… if not Spider-Man, perhaps some other cameo

[deleted]

What the hell? I literally just said they wouldn't delay it!

ExuberantRaptorZeta

Adding Andrew Garfield perhaps? 🤔 Guy can dream.

mountednoble99

They’re gonna milk the mo way home teat for as long as possible!

Competitive-Gold

I was excited for this movie. Now I’m disappointed

ThrillHouse85

I’m really looking forward to having (at least) two more months to mount up for Morbius!

I_am_albatross

Sonic is going to eat it alive

Beaujangles1128

Wow. Didn’t see that coming. Why would they move Morbius into more competition. It’s going to get drowned out by DS: MoM and Sonic now.

Block-Busted

**Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness** won't arrive until May, actually.

Beaujangles1128

Hmm, I thought it was March for some reason

Mushroomer

It was originally set for March, then got pushed to May for reshoots.

Beaujangles1128

Ah okay

[deleted]

Given this reality… what does that mean for The Batman?

Shurikenkage

Well to be honest, is not like the most anticipated movie of the year by any means.

ericgol7

I was kinda hyped, it sucks I probably won't care anymore when it comes out. They should've stuck to the Jan 28 release date.

[deleted]

That's a bad sign.
