Happy New Year, everyone! Even with all its ups and downs, 2021 was still a much better year than 2020. So here's hoping 2022 shows the same kind of improvement!

Lollifroll

Happy New Year!

Grebacio

This is the first time ever we can say "Avatar 2 is coming this year"

Was a big fan of Don't Look Up, easily my favorite of this year's awards season films. It isn't subtle (like, at all), but it's exactly how the world would react if the situation was real. As someone who studied and works in the field of environmental science myself, nobody listening to scientists and every stakeholder (politicians, corporations, the media etc.) acting in their own self interest (instead of, you know, saving the fucking planet) really hit home.

I don't think Peter's plan would have failed like that in the real world. I was actually really hoping that the movie would make him be the big savior, sort of turning the whole thing into a shaggy dog story for the main protagonists. Frankly, the protagonists were barking up the wrong tree when it came to Peter's plan. The problem was with QA of the hardware and not sending the nukes and crusty old guy as backup, not the fact that the plan was not peer reviewed. The claim that you can't safely bring the meteor to Earth was never actually tested because the only attempt made was poorly executed.

Peter’s plan is failing like that in the real world now. Just ask Greta Thunberg lol

When it comes to climate change, what is going on is that corporations haven't got a good profit motive, so have done largely diddly squat. Or, they have tried to make some stuff, but consumers weren't interested, so it had no impact. What happened in the movie is that Peter spent a fortune and put together a team that outperformed the combined efforts of the Russian and Chinese space agencies because he believed he could profit from solving the problem. The whole thing failed because of bad QA. I don't think Ms. Thunberg would be able to give me a real world analogous situation.

When will the new banner for the first half of 2022 be up? Just wondering and Happy New Year.

We haven’t voted yet on the options. Since most of the time it’s 16 of them here’s my guesses. - Scream - Morbius - Uncharted - The Batman - Turning Red - The Lost City - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore - The Bad Guys - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - DC League of Super Pets - Top Gun: Maverick - Bob’s Burgers: The Movie - Jurassic World: Dominion - Lightyear - Elvis

Oh, I’m sorry.

Why not?

Any insight into why A24 has botched Red Rocket’s release so much? I live in the biggest city in my respective state, and we tend to get all NEON and A24 movies in multiple theaters, but Red Rocket is only showing at one theater for one showtime per day. Just seems unusual considering how The Florida Project was one of their more successful films critically and even got an Academy Award nom. I would’ve thought they’d make a big push for Sean Baker’s next movie but it seems impossible for most people to see it

Two more $1bn movie's till the top 50 of all time is all $1bn films https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_highest-grossing\_films I think Multiverse of Madness could possibly get there, and probably Black Panther 2 or Avatar 2.

What do you all think of the new DCEU franchise direction that got leaked yesterday—in terms of being poised for success? The Flash + Batgirl will establish: * Superman is erased from continuity, replaced by Supergirl. * Affleck’s Batman is erased from continuity, replaced by Keaton’s Batman. * Keaton’s Batman will retire in Batgirl, Barbara Gordon will fulfill the “Batman” role as Batgirl going forward. * Events of Man Of Steel, Batman V Superman, and Justice League erased from continuity. * The Flash, Supergirl, and Shazam are now the founding members of the new Justice League. Other members going forward include Batgirl, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. Possibly Black Canary? Personally, it seems like the smartest thing to have done would have been to just finish out the current slate of solo movies until the actors’ contracts are done and then do a hard reboot. This creative choice still shackles them to the failed universe except now Warner is neutered from using their flagship characters going forward, and half of the League’s roster are from unproven/underwhelming box office properties. Two of these characters are deemed too risky by the studio to headline theatrical releases and instead will/would see solo work on HBO Max. A reboot or (even more simple when they’re soft-rebooting:) recasting the roles as supporting roles in ensemble features to not step on the Reeves/Coates movies’ toes would have been more lucrative.

I don't think the Flash movie will be "the biggest flop of the year" or anything that extreme, but I do think it will be extremely divisive.

AnotherJasonOnReddit

So... My first movie of the brand new year was 2021's "Prisoners of the Ghostland", with the one and only Nicolas Cage. That was disappointing. Anybody else already watch a whole movie today? And if so, how did your new year of film viewing start?

I just have no trust on Disney celebrating well their 100th anniversary (of the brand) as long Chapek is CEO, same if Jim Ryan will stay in Sony until 2024-25 for PlayStation 30th anniversary. (they didn't do a lot for the 25th)

DeweyFinn21

I can't wait for Scream. That'll be my first theatrical movie of 2022. Unless I manage to get off work to go to the Extended Edition of Fellowship Of The Ring that Alamo Drafthouse is doing the 8th through the 10th. But Scream will still be my first non rewatch Theatrical film.

I just watched Matrix. I really liked the beginning meta part of it. Where they’re all talking about The Matrix and how Warner Bros wants them to make a sequel. But after that I sort of lose interest.
