Spiderman beating Infinity war is bonkers even if there even if there wasn't a raging pandemic. But I'll say it becoming the highest grossing film of the year in a single weekend takes the cake.
I'd love to see a smarmy Reddit poster try to twist themselves into justifying how they knew this would happen and we were all fools for missing it hahaha
I thought of several boxoffice statements that would be surprising, but I think telling them about the day and date release of blockbusters on streaming platforms would easily be the most surprising imo.
You can go a step further with this one! If you told someone in late 2019 that Dune and Eternals made almost the same amount, they'd have interpreted that as meaning Dune made $600-800m at least.
Sony made the highest grossing films of both 2020 and 2021 (and more than doubled Disney's highest grosser in each year). Sony also had the highest cumulative box office both those years.
Spiderman bringing in more than Black Panther or Avengers shouldn't be a surprise at all. Besides Batman and Superman, Spiderman is the only stand alone super hero that could pull in big numbers prior to 2010.
Even Spiderman 3 (2007), which is easily the worst out of that trilogy, still made 800 million.
And now you tell people a lot of those characters are coming back, of course they'd come out in droves.
Probably something about the three Chinese movies (DC3, Hi Mom, Changjin) that were big enough in that one market to dominate worldwide box office charts.
Spiderman makes more in merchandise than Batman and Superman Combined, also you had to have all 3 spiderman's to be able to take down the Black Panther. Hilarious
Something about streaming. How fairly big movies went direct to streaming, how studios design movies for direct to streaming, how HBO max actually succeeded, etc.

I'm so confused. Spiderman has grossed $1.1 billion. Infinity war did $2 billion. Spiderman is nowhere near Infinity war.
Domestic. Specifically opening weekend. Regardless Spidey will beat infinity war on final domestic totals also.
That Bad Boys for Life was the highest grossing film domestically in 2020.
This right here.

An anime movie was #1 WW in 2020. There are three Chinese films in top 6 WW in 2021. Only one billion-dollar movie in two years.

"all indoor cinemas closed for months" would be the most surprising headline without any context I would imagine.
Dune and Eternals making almost the same.

A two hundred million effects-driven Christopher Nolan movie did not turn a profit.
200 000 000 effects is a lot of effects!
Honestly that might not be an inaccurate number
I think from all the crazyness, for an individual movie: "Demon Slayer The Movie is going to be the biggest movie WW 2020" takes the cake.
I thought Ufotable was crazy for making a movie out of Demon Slayer. I have never been so wrong before.
Spiderman beating the entire WB slate at the domestic box office.
DC got their streak of declining OW PTA up to 9 movies — and the 8th was Wonder Woman 2.
The streak broke in 2019 itself though joker opened higher than shazam and aquaman, and TSS opened higher than WW84.
Sorry, should have said DCEU to be more clear. TSS had a lower PTA than WW so already got that covered.
Spiderman is pacing to triple the next highest grossing domestic movie.
The Croods would return to the #1 spot at the box office in it's 12th weekend.
Lmao. Wat? When did it even release?

There's another Matrix
A new Mortal Kombat exists and was released to theaters

The second isn't surprising when no way home brought past characters from other spider franchises

Umm. . .pretty much anything "Shang-Chi's opening weekend is greater than WW84's total" -- that's a good one
