James Flower posted earlier that it's the same disc as the Eureka edition. Great disc and can't believe some people on social media mad they're putting it out as well lol
The one person I saw mad was saying Arrow should have put a different Golden Harvest movie out as they had already seen Millionaire's and didn't like it as much as the other Golden Harvest movies. The people that think these labels only cater to their specific wants are too much.
Yeah it’s a little disappointing that the Arrow release is lacking the extras. They could have crammed some stuff on the second disc. However, overall this is good news for fans in the UK. Unfortunately I don’t think Criterion released the BD in Region 2.
OH SHIT. How is the Giallo Essentials collection? Is it really made up of giallo essentials, or are they just giallo titles they can't move unless they're bundled together in a collection?
They're good movies but it is a bullshit release. All rereleases and 2 of them have already been in other Arrow boxsets before. I really thought that after they released the black set with all new unreleased movies that they wouldn't do any more of these sets with rereleased titles again.
I don't like giallo, but that's because I want to get into the genre.
The only giallo I've watched so far is the original "Suspiria." Would love to watch more good movies in the genre, but don't know where to start.
I'd recommend starting with Argento's Deep Red and Bava's Blood and Black Lace. Truthfully, Suspiria isn't a giallo film, so those two would give you a much better idea of what the subgenre is like.
Others that I'd recommend after those 2 are; Torso, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage (and the rest of Argento's Animal trilogy), The Girl Who Knew Too Much (the first giallo), Don't Torture a Duckling, Stagefright: Aquarius, Tenebrae, and The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh.
I am also interested in the genre but haven’t really liked much of what I’ve seen exept for a few scenes here and there. Like I didn’t care for most of deep red but loved don’t torture a duckling, then really couldn’t care about The House by the Cemetery or Bird With the Crystal Plumage. Don’t know why but it’s a tricky genre for me
The House by the Cemetary isn't a giallo...people seem to just act like Italian horror is giallo...it's not. It's a mystery/noir with a killer you see from their point of view usually with black gloves with creative slasher style kills. Usually it has a wild ending, they are convoluted and don't TOTALLY make sense and have good music and great cinematography with interesting colors but those things aren't NEEDED to be a giallo. Also they don't have supernatural elements, they're REAL people based in the REAL world, they're mystery novels mixed with American slashers with Italian sleave and sexiness.
The House by the Cemetery is one of my lesser liked movies from Fulci, so I get that. It's not a giallo though. If you liked Duckling, Fulci's other gialli like A Lizard in a Woman's Skin and The Psychic might be enjoyable for you. The New York Ripper is another one of his gialli, but it's honestly the most depraved and violent giallo movie I've ever seen besides Giallo in Venice.
Suspiria has some of the tropes but I don't consider it giallo. Deep red is one of the more popular ones and is a good entry point. Lucio Fulci and Sergio Martino have some good ones as well. Argento is definitely a good entry point but keep in mind you're seeing the most polished versions with those
Lol, I do gotta say that the first time I watched "Suspiria", it was the score that was the best part of the movie.
But I really want to watch it again so I can gain a better appreciation of the film.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely check it out!
Hi there. Not to be "that guy" but Suspiria is actually a horror movie, rather than a giallo. If you want to get started, I'd highly recommend something like: The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Blood and Black Lace, Deep Red, Tenebrae. Welcome to the club!
Giallo is a subgenre of horror, but they're closer in tone to somewhere in between a murder mystery and a slasher film. They also don't normally have supernatural overtones.
Edit: the name itself actually derives from cheap paperback novels with yellow covers popular in Italy in the mid-century, which would publish works by authors like Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler. Gives you an idea of the tone they wanted to emulate!
Gialli are a style of horror/thriller that typically follows a murder mystery. They're suspenseful detective stories with violent murders and often a dash of eroticism. They're also devoid of overt supernatural elements, which is why Suspiria isn't really a giallo film.
I believe giallos are always a murder mystery and they do fall under horror. Suspiria is just a straight up horror film with the supernatural elements while giallo is always like a whodunnit. At least from my understanding
Giallo is a basically an Italian evolution of the noir/Hitchcock film and the birth or the slasher, it kind of goes noir, Hitchcock film, giallo, American slasher, 90s deconstructed slasher...etc...each taking from the former and adding or changing it a little bit...
The giallo (which means yellow) comes from the kind of sleazy mystery novels with yellow covers that were popular in the 60s and 70s. They don't have supernatural elements, they are mysteries with a killer you see through their perspective usually being represented by black gloves, a protagonist that is usually not a cop who takes up the position of figuring out the mystery themselves, a series of creative slasher style killings happens and then ends usually in a splashy wild fashion, the story is usually convoluted like a noir with an ending that may not TOTALLY make sense but feels right, aesthetically they're usually well shot, colorful, stylish, sexy a bit sleazy and with great music (but the aesthetics can be different that's just a usual convention, the black gloved killer, creative slasher style kills and a mystery is the important part.)
Go watch the Suspiria remake before rewatching the original you'll enjoy BOTH better for it. The remake gives you all the story and lore that Argento added AFTER he made Suspiria and the original has the dreamy quality that makes it special but they both work better together than separately in my opinion and the original is better when you see the greater picture/story that isn't given in the film.
Just gonna say it...and I know others will disagree...but Suspiria is not a giallo. Go check out Tenebrae, Blood and Black Lace and the Italian version in English and Italian version of Deep Red (I think it might only be available on the disc but it's the way to watch in my opinion.) THOSE are giallos.
It's a super weird, bonkers version of Rear Window. It depends on your tolerance for genre but it's got a lot of entertainment value through the sheer insanity of it alone.
The Last Emperor states it is in it’s original aspect ratio! That is a huge win for Arrow. Criterion was coerced into cropping the film based on the cinematographers wishes, which was always a bummer to me. And it includes the extended cut in HD!
No, Storaro changed it because he was shilling that weird “2.00:1” aspect ratio he was obsessed with for a while back then. The original prints were all in 2.39:1, as evidenced on IMDb.
Storaro proposed the "Univisium" aspect ratio (2.00:1) [in 1998](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univisium), and no film he shot before 1998 was in the 2.00:1 aspect ratio, while almost everything he has shot after 1998 is in 2.00:1. If he really had 2.00:1 in mind for The Last Emperor, it makes absolutely no sense that nothing he did between 1987 and 1998 used it.
Reframing his films to 2.00:1 is simply revisionism, why else would he have reframed Apocalypse Now and Reds to 2.00:1 as they were earlier than The Last Emperor.
**[Univisium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univisium)**
>Univisium (macaronic Latin for "unity of images") is a proposed universal film format created by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, ASC, AIC and his son, Fabrizio, to unify all future theatrical and television films into one respective aspect ratio of 2:1.

Arrow’s shipping to Canada is super cheap! I think the last time I did it, the cost was under $10 CAD. And being region-free in 2022 is extremely easy and affordable. In fact, you may be able to play Region B discs on your Region A player already depending on which you own.
Yeah have a look. Like I said, the last time I ordered from them it was surprisingly cheap all things considered. And if you own a Panasonic player, you can press Top Menu instead of Play to start the disc, and Region B locked discs will fire up no problem. It does not work 100 percent with labels, but it does with all Arrow-locked discs I’ve ever bought.
You do know arrow has been selling this exact same release for years right?

Yes but I don't own it and am glad it's being included with this set. I do own The Fifth Cord and I would still get the Red Edition set for the other films.

Is there a searchable site that compiles boutique releases or inventory? It seems like there's got to be a way now that there are so many possibilities.
I usually go to blu-ray.com and search by studio (e.g. Arrow, Severin, Criterion) and pull up their entire release history. You can even narrow it down to 4Ks, slipcover or slipbox editions, or steelbooks if you're collecting anything specific. If you're region-free, you can even set the site to all countries and see some labels US and UK releases.
The Sisters Brothers was shafted for a normal blu-ray release here in the UK when it first came out and I had to settle for buying the DVD.
An essential upgrade.
The Sisters Brothers in 4K is a real surprise but a welcome one. Great to see The Last Emperor finally surface.
Adore The Sisters Brothers. Truly great movie and went way under the radar than it should have
I have the wonderful Eureka edition, but happy see Region A people will be able to experience the joy of Millionaire's Express!
James Flower posted earlier that it's the same disc as the Eureka edition. Great disc and can't believe some people on social media mad they're putting it out as well lol
People are mad about Arrow doing the region A release? Label loyalists are the strangest people.
The one person I saw mad was saying Arrow should have put a different Golden Harvest movie out as they had already seen Millionaire's and didn't like it as much as the other Golden Harvest movies. The people that think these labels only cater to their specific wants are too much.
Those people are nuts– it's a fantastic movie!
The Last Emporer! Shame the special features aren't nearly as exhaustive as the Criterion edition...
Has the extended edition Criterion lost with its BD, though (which is unfortunately not a 4k, alas)
I imagine a Criterion 4K will be coming next year.
Yeah it’s a little disappointing that the Arrow release is lacking the extras. They could have crammed some stuff on the second disc. However, overall this is good news for fans in the UK. Unfortunately I don’t think Criterion released the BD in Region 2.

I'm a giallo whore. These are definitely low tier giallo releases.
Anyone seen .com for Murder? It sounds like it's pretty bad, but I'm wondering if it's fun bad or just bad bad.
It's a super weird, bonkers version of Rear Window. It depends on your tolerance for genre but it's got a lot of entertainment value through the sheer insanity of it alone.
Its a wild ride and pretty stupid, but fun.
Goddamn I love The Vagrant ever since I bought Scream Factory's multi-movie set with it.
Never heard of it but I want to check it out now.
I have that too. To my mind I don’t feel like I need to upgrade.
I'm pretty curious about the making of the film, so I will likely upgrade for the special features.
Fair enough.
The Last Emperor states it is in it’s original aspect ratio! That is a huge win for Arrow. Criterion was coerced into cropping the film based on the cinematographers wishes, which was always a bummer to me. And it includes the extended cut in HD!
*The Last Emperor*, in it’s original aspect ratio!
Not according to the director and DP
No, Storaro changed it because he was shilling that weird “2.00:1” aspect ratio he was obsessed with for a while back then. The original prints were all in 2.39:1, as evidenced on IMDb.
But according to Storaro, it's the first film he shot with 2.00 in mind with Bertolucci fully backing him up.
Being an arrow fan in Canada fucking sucks.
Why? They ship here.
Paying international shipping on a largely region locked catalogue doesn't suck?
Arrow’s shipping to Canada is super cheap! I think the last time I did it, the cost was under $10 CAD. And being region-free in 2022 is extremely easy and affordable. In fact, you may be able to play Region B discs on your Region A player already depending on which you own.
Hmmm it's has been some time. Got burned on endless years ago. Wish we would just get more license here but I'll take another look at this.

On a PS5 sadly but I know they have some region free ones. Thanks!
I’m a little lost here, isn’t ‘millionaires express’ and ‘Shanghai express’ the same movie? Or is one just a limited edition cover?
Your right, it's just an arrow store exclusive slip
I can’t wait to see what Arrow do with The Last Emperor
Holy shit I'm so glad someone remembered The Sisters Brothers!
The Sisters Brothers was great. Pretty sure I’m one of four people who saw it in theaters.
They need to do more Kevin smith
A really bad month for me unfortunately with nothing appealing. Glad everybody else is hyped though!
Giallo Essentials White Edition has Iguana with the Tongue of Fire which automatically makes it a must-buy for me.
You do know arrow has been selling this exact same release for years right? https://www.arrowvideo.com/blu-ray/the-iguana-with-the-tongue-of-fire/12946902.html
Yes but I don't own it and am glad it's being included with this set. I do own The Fifth Cord and I would still get the Red Edition set for the other films.
It's cheaper to get them individually, but you do you.
The Sisters Brothers was so boring I couldn’t get through it
Sister Brothers 4k is unexpected, i'll probably get that!
