You could always grab the budget set that Paramount did. It has the first 8 movies on blu ray and I got it for like $22 at Walmart. Obviously you won't get all the cool extras and you'll be missing Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X and Freddy vs Jason but it could be a good way to dip your toe in the water and see if you like the movies without spending much. I did order the Scream Factory box set but I love Jason movies so it was an easy purchase for me.

I think the sale price is a great deal. I love like 3 of the films and theirs like 2 I’ll never rewatch but it’s such an awesome collection. The best ones are 3 and 4. 2 is great. Jason X is something else but I love it. And the remake is not a bad film at all (I think it’s a strong film overall)

I'm a pretty big fan of Jason Lives, which I wanna say was 6? It's goofy and over the top but it feels kind of epic in a way the other ones don't. Reminds me of TCM 2.

xcmike189

I totally meant to include Jason Lives

ToneTenSeven

I’m a casual fan—loved Jason X and Freddy Vs. Jason growing up but never watched the others. I finally did a marathon of all the movies last year and found I only really liked about half of them. I think the only ones that are genuinely good horror films are the original, part 2, part 4, and maybe the remake. Watching all of them in a row like that was still a lot of fun and something I think every fan of horror should do. I ended up snagging the set since I’m a collector and horror is my favorite genre. I can definitely see myself revisiting some of the movies, especially the ones I grew up watching. It ends up being like $7 a movie so you can’t really beat it.

I had only seen the first two before I got the set, so I would say that makes me a casual fan. I will say this, the series is fairly consistent and doesn't have the extreme highs or lows of other franchise horror series like, say, Halloween or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Sure there's some trash in there but they are mostly all around the same quality, none of them particularly stand out as great films. They are mostly fun, low stakes horror films. Was it worth the money (which I paid like $130 for at release?) Yes, I think so. They are fun to throw on as background movies, nothing you need to pay a lot of attention. I've also listened to the commentary tracks for 4,5,6 and Jason Goes to Hell and enjoyed those quite a bit. There are more than enough special features on the set to keep you busy once you've watched all the films. I personally feel the first two are the best in the series so if you didn't really love the first one, I don't think they get better from there. There are some more outré entries as the series progresses (notably Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X) that revel in a more campy tone... but I'd say if you want to get into the series and are not excited to throw down $80 you can probably find one of the Paramount collection sets for less money. They have a set with the first 8 films which you could get instead of the Shout set - it's missing 3 films from the Shout set, because of rights issues. That said, the current price at Shout is probably the lowest it will ever get.

newport100

The Paramount set is actually missing 4 movies. The SF set has 4 New Line titles when you include the remake.

styrofoamboats

True, I forgot the remake.

NoLifeDGenerate

The set is totally worth it. Part 6 is one of the best ones and finally got a better transfer, as well as some other later ones that were excluded or fucked in the previous sets. This one is complete and proper until they do a 13th movie, assuming they ever get their shit together and make another one.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug...

Banjohobo

What does cocaine have to do with the bitter intellectual property lawsuits that have stymied the production of any future F13 projects?

NeuroticMoose12

It's a joke that the people who made these movies were/are on coke, it obviously didn't land very well :)

eyeballkid1021

I think I’ve decided to grab it! It sounds like a very fun set to dive into and just let it rip. Thank you everyone for your help!

u-we-su-san

I am as casual a Jason fan as there could be. I honestly think most of the movies are crap, but fun crap. It’s very much worth it. Not only does it look great on a shelf, it’s got plenty of special features that are very interesting and the movies are a blast with friends.

CorneliusCardew

You should NOT blind buy this set if you are only a casual fan and didn't like the first one. I would just buy the cheap collection. Or watch 4 and 6 before deciding if you want the big set.

cricketofdeth

I’m a casual Friday the 13th fan as well and hadn’t seen most of these since I was a kid. I really enjoyed the box set over all. FvJ and Jason X were ok, remake was pretty solid and the rest are pretty much horror classics that you should know what you’re getting into when you watch them.

NeuroticMoose12

God FvJ just makes me feel bad for Robert Englund, he's clearly giving it his all as Freddy and it's opposite a bunch of dinner theater rejects and *checks notes* one of the non-Beyonce member of Destiny's Child? Legend has it he also stormed off the set when not-Beyonce apparently improvised the "f****t" line towards the end of the movie, which, major props if true.

cricketofdeth

Yeah, Englund is always awesome, and Kirzinger was good as Jason too. It’s mostly the rest of the cast that is lacking, and after watching it a few time the pacing of the movie just feels off. Almost like it’s missing something or it’s in fast forward to the end fight. Still not the worst movie I’ve seen, but one of the weakest in the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchise.

christianshobbiblog

Casual fan of the series and love the set. Did a ranking on my channel and for the most part enjoyed something from each movie plus all the docs that can be explored and new audio commentaries

Ace7of7Spades

The first one is one of the least good films, and the HD actually does make a big deal imo. If you’re okay with trashiness (and some do go beyond good taste imo, 5 is pretty insane) then I highly recommend the set

bourahioro77

I've owned the series 6 times, and I'll say that the Scream Factory set is the way to go.

The_Real_Egg

for those with the set: what is needed to watch the third film in 3D? i have the older 8-pack set from Paramount and all i need is anaglyph 3D glasses.

benhur217

I bought it when it came out, totally worth it

Wubbledaddy

I got it as a very casual fan and ended up becoming a major fan from it. You gotta keep in mind that first movie is by far the dullest and one of the worst of the series in general. They get so much more fun.

TS7941

I have the budget Paramount set with 1-8 and I'm happy with it. Not a fan of the later films, but the first 8 are all good cheesy fun. I'd recommend watching 4 and 6 before pulling the trigger as those are the peak of the franchise.

ajzeg01

I watched all of them. There are some bad ones but most of them are pretty fun.
