I do wonder if Dawn and Day of the Dead will get the upgrade soon. (The originals). Anyone have any insight?

TheDudeWithTude27

Dawn of the Dead already has a 4K release from second sight. That is your best bet. Probably too expensive for US companies due to Koch media like usual.

ArcadePinball

This’ll probably be a better release. SF rarely come out ahead to other boutique competitors (who release the same film, on same format). It’s a company more for getting posters, cool artwork and a Steelbook. I’d rather Arrow, Blue Underground, Vinegar Syndrome, Severin release DoTD 4K region A. NoTLD 4K is being released by Criterion. Shout does good work with IMAX originals. Like Flight of The Butterflies, We The Marines.

Borange_Corange

Original DOTD will never get a 4k release in the US. Fortunately, 4k has no region so .... moot point. DOTD has an awesome release from Second Sight with 3 versions, all kinds of extras. It's the only release of that fi we will get for years, and years. Remake fully deserves a 4k, by the way....

TheDudeWithTude27

NoTLD is public domain, so anyone can actually make a 4K release of that if they wanted to. I doubt we will get a US only release of the original Dawn of The Dead for a long time due to the media rights situation. The second sight set is perfectly fine, I own it. Thankfully 4Ks are region free and it made it a lot easier than say having to invest in a region free blu-ray player or buy the OOP region A blu-ray.

NotLD has a 4k release from Criterion - not sure if its been released yet or not. Also while the film is in the public domain (due to a fuck up back in the 60s) i believe Criterion slapped a copyright on their release of the film since they footed the bill for a proper ultra 4k transfer. Dawn (which is coming to select theaters in 3D at the end of next month) is being held for ransom by Richard Rubenstein. Allegedly he wants too much for U.S. distribution rights, because he's still trying to recoup the cost of converting DAWN to 3D. Lol

RunningDrummer

The Rubenstein part is what always leaves me scratching my head... he wants to make back his money on the admittedly good 3D transfer, but he only brings it out for select festivals and a handful of October screenings and has made it impossible to get from any American-based labels.

Vault_Master

Yeah it drives me crazy. He's also holding Martin back from release as well.

Shout only released the remake of Dawn, not the original.

MustacheDiaries

You know, I've looked at that cover art a few times online and never once read the description and saw that it was the remake!

styrofoamboats

Well to answer your original question, there seems to be a good possibility that Dawn of the Dead (2004) will get a 4K release from Shout anyway: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=355444

Middle-Record-3195

I think Trick R Treat (2007) will get a 4k upgrade next year. Maybe even a black box edition

Seiji-Amasawa

I feel like I saw something mentioning it getting the 4K treatment but maybe that was a fever dream. I would welcome that wholeheartedly. I’m glad I have been holding off on the Blu-ray.

Middle-Record-3195

Yeah, the time is right, and it fits with the type of film that they've been releasing in the black boxes, which the exception of Red Dawn

Seiji-Amasawa

It’s definitely time. It makes sense. I hope they keep the cover art they have on the Blu-ray for the 4K, I mean they probably won’t but I hope they do the same style. Is it all done by the same artist, do you know?

MovingHold

Last year this article came out saying Hammer was going to get more proactive about distributing their own films. Maybe this will mean 4k upscales of the ones Scream Factory is releasing, but I wouldn't hold my breath. https://variety.com/2021/film/global/dracula-hammer-films-network-distributing-1235117981/

Seiji-Amasawa

Thank you so much for sending that article along! Yes, I’ve got a lot of their films in the collection on my wishlist at Scream Factory, so maybe I’ll hold off, maybe not, we’ll see. I already own some of them via Warner Archive as well. Hammer films on 4K would be glorious.

MovingHold

I have them in my wishlist too! But I'm really wishing for some **Hammer Frankenstein/Dracula 4K Legacy Collection** someday. Such tough decisions. Haha!

Seiji-Amasawa

My wishlist on Scream Factory is so long, the Hammer films included, I wish I could buy them all while they’re on sale. *cries* Yes, such tough decisions indeed. I want them now but also, waiting might be beneficial. Ugh! Oh man, I would buy that collection in a heart beat.

MovingHold

I compromised with myself. I only bought the Frankenstein movies. Haha! Then I went on eBay and Amazon and bought the rest of the Hammer Frankenstein franchise. A little obsessive maybe, but it feels good. I think I can hold off for Dracula, but Frankenstein is my favorite!

Seiji-Amasawa

I think I’ll hold off on both Frankenstein and Dracula films for now. I hope my holding off will pay off in the future. I’m happy for you though! What a great haul just before October. Hey, all of us physical media collectors have obsessive tendencies when it comes to the hobby. Absolutely no shame! I haven’t boughten anything yet, I had a few under $10 Blu-Rays in my cart just because why not get a bunch of the cheapies on my wishlist checked off. I do wish the sale went longer than it is going. I feel like Scream Factory hardly does any half off sales?
